2018 OUR LADY OF MIRACLES CELEBRATION | 3

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2018

Presidents cherish faith, heritage Celebration embraces GUSTINE - A prayer answered, and a long-standing devotion to Our Lady have helped shape and guide the lives of the 2018 presidents who are overseeing the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration. Luis and Jennifer Nunes grew up attending the Celebration they will lead this year, taking part in the many traditions with their parents and in turn passing a devotion to faith and heritage on to their own children. Their faith and devotion grew only deeper a decade ago, when the family’s prayers were answered after Luis was involved in a serious accident and he had to learn to walk again. He made a promise at the time, Luis recalled, that if granted healing he would serve as president of the OLM Celebration if asked. “She answered our prayers,” Jennifer shared.

In reflection, “Promise” is the theme of the upcoming Celebration bodo de leite. Such promises, the Nuneses reflected, are a central aspect of the Celebration. “That is why people show up and light the candles,” Luis said of the deep prayer and accompanying promises. The presidents’ gift this year is a ceramic piece depicting the crown of Our Lady. The gift holds a candle, which can be lit in prayer. “The gift this year is based on Our Lady. Her birthday lands on Saturday, the day of the candlelight procession,” Luis explained. Faith and heritage are the long-standing cornerstones of the Celebration, which is known in the Por-

A Message from the President It is with great honor and pleasure that we serve as this year’s President of the Our lady of Miracles Celebration. This celebration has always been very dear to our hearts as we both have been involved since we were kids. Our parents instilled their devotion and traditions into our upbringing, and we are doing the same for our daughters. This year they will have the honor of representing Our Lady of Miracles as the Junior and Senior Queen. The theme for this year is “Promesas”. Our Blessed Mother is always there for us to guide us in our journey through life. Becoming President was our Promesa to her for answering our prayers when we most needed her. We know that Our Lady of Miracles has been there for

others as they recount their experience of prayers and a Promesa. She has been so good to us and we are grateful for the ability to live healthy lives with our family and friends. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank the OLM Committee and its many volunteers, family and friends for all their support and encouragement throughout the year. We would also like to thank all the donors for their generosity. Without your financial support, our traditions and faith would not be celebrated in this manner. We, along with the rest of the OLM Committee, invite the community to participate in the grand tradition celebrating Our Lady of Miracles. May Our Lady continue to bless you and your families.

– Luis and Jennifer Nunes, Nunes President

Our Lady of Miracles, pray for us!

PRESIDENTS

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 tuguese community around the world. The Celebration, and their Portuguese heritage, have long been an integral part of the presidents’ lives. Each grew up in Gustine, attending the Celebration each year. “As a kid, my whole life,” Luis said. “It was a very important part of my family tradition growing up. I can remember stories that my dad would tell about people in the Azores and Portugal knowing the town of Gustine because of this Celebration.” The Celebration has many moving moments, Luis reflected, but one stands out in his mind as most powerful. One of the most emotional aspects of the Celebration, he said, is when the statue of Our Lady is returned to the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles on Sunday night, bringing the annual event to a close. “That is very moving,” he told Mattos Newspapers. His father Luis C. Nunes was president in 1994, and

a brother, Alfred Nunes, held that honor in 2013. Jennifer was in the choir as a young child, and served as an OLM sidemaid when she was 10 years old. “We attended the Celebration, the dances, the novenas, all of it,” she recalled. “It is all I know.” The Nuneses operate a family-owned dairy, and Jennifer is a nurse manager. Their daughters, Darian and Josie, are senior and junior queens, respectively - meaning that the family’s commitment to representing Our Lady at various festas, which started when they were vice president, constitutes a three-year commitment. They are comfortable on the familiar festa circuit, however, and said they enjoy representing Our Lady and seeing various friends along the way. “It is a mini-reunion everywhere,” Jennifer shared. The OLM Celebration will once again include long-standing traditions, such as the bodo de leite, processions, vigils, novenas, traditional foods and much more in the coming days. Already known world-

wide, the event will gain additional exposure this year, according to Luis. He said a PBS crew will be in Gustine for the big OLM weekend to chronicle the Celebration as part of a documentary on the Portuguese heritage in the Central Valley. Serving as president, Luis and Jennifer shared, is an honor. The Celebration, they said, is not the product of the presidents alone but requires the support of a strong committee and legion of faithful volunteers who step forward each year to make the event possible. “You can’t do it by yourself. It is just overwhelming,” Luis remarked. “We have a lot of help,” Jennifer agreed. “We can’t do this alone.” The Celebration brings together friends and family who share a common heritage, Jennifer added, but faith remains the focal point. “The most meaningful part is Our Lady. It is about traditions and about family, but when you get down to it, it is honoring her,” Jennifer said. “She answers prayers for us, and has provided us with miracles.”

The 2018-19 Our Lady of Miracles senior queen is no stranger to the festa circuit - but is looking forward an an entirely new experience as she represents the wellknown OLM Celebration in the year to come. Thirteen-year-old Darian Nunes will accept the crown from current senior queen Avery Terra before the start of mass Sunday morning, Sept. 9, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles. Nunes, an eighth-grade student at Our Lady of Miracles Catholic School, is the daughter of Celebration presidents Luis and Jennifer Nunes. She has been raised with a family tradition of participating in the Celebration. “We go every single year, for all 11 nights,” Darian shared. She is a fan of the bullfights and dances, and declares the sopas served at the Celebration to be “amazing.” But the most meaningful aspect of the Celebration, she said, is the candlelight procession in which the statue of Our Lady of Miracles is carried from the Shrine of OLM to a chapel in Henry Miller Park for an overnight vigil. She has twice served as a sidemaid for the Gustine

Pentecost Society and was junior queen for the 100th GPS festa. The honor of being OLM senior queen is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity, Darian told Mattos Newspapers. In addition to participating in events throughout the Celebration as queen, Darian will also perform as part of a Luso-America dance group - one of many activities in which she is involved. She also is a 4-H member, shows dairy projects at the fair and plays volleyball. After the Celebration, Darian and her sidemaids Heaven Elisary and Hope Brasil-Braaten will represent Our Lady of Miracles at various festas during the year to come. Her younger sister, Josie, is the junior queen. They are being raised in a family which values its faith and heritage. “It is an honor for me to have the two girls represent Our Lady,” reflected their mother, Jennifer Nunes, It is something that has always been important to me. Going through the Celebration, I think they will gain a better understanding of what it means. It is a real proud moment for me. There is a lot of tradition with Our Lady.”

Dedicated volunteers bring floats to life GUSTINE - A tight-knit core of volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes to create the floats which illustrate the theme of each year’s Our Lady of Miracles Celebration. The elaborate floats have in recent years become a traditional part of the bodo de leite, or parade of animals, which is held on the Saturday morning of each big OLM Celebration weekend. After taking a one-year hiatus, the floats will once again be part of the Celebration this year - and will depict the 2018 bodo de leite theme of “Promise.” Exactly what form that takes will remain a closelyguarded secret, as the six floats are kept under wraps until being rolled out that morning for the bodo de leite. “There are a couple of floats that we don’t even want the president to see until they come out that day. They will be a surprise,” explained Eric Snoke, a member of that core float-building group. “They have already been told that this is off-limits.”

Tony Costa (left) and Eric Snoke are the primary fabricators of the floats featured in the Celebration bodo de leite.

FLOATS

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 Behind the scenes, work on the floats started several weeks ago with a familiar quartet of Eric and Durvalina Snoke, Tony Costa and Fatima Silveira designing and building the floats. A small number of volunteers will help, but the floats remain the work of a few until the crew grows in number for the final decorating. “Depending on what we’re doing, sometimes we need a lot of help,” explained Costa. Each year, the floats from the previous bodo de leite are broken down and the crew starts from scratch for the next year’s Celebration. “We sit down and talk about it ahead of time, and just kind of brainstorm,” said Costa and Eric Snoke, who take the lead on the fabrication work. “Sometimes there is a lot of design work. It depends on the vision, as we like to

call it.” As was the case in the old country, Costa added, “we make a lot of things from scratch.” Their inventory of construction items ranges from wood and iron to motors and gear boxes.... among many other materials and props stored from prior years. “Sometimes it is kind of a scavenger hunt,” Eric Snoke said of the annual search for materials to use on the floats. “If it works, it works. We try to put some creativity into it.” Animation is featured on some floats, and many carry riders who essentially become cast members for the event, clad in attire appropriate for the period and taking part in activities depicting life in the Azores or another aspect of the overall message. “A lot of the younger generations don’t know how it was back in those days. The floats let them see how things were,” Costa explained. Potential float scenes are researched, and the infor-

mation garnered allows the builders to present an authentic depiction. The crew has created floats depicting mountains, oceans, churches, villages and more through the years. Perhaps the most elabo-

rate float, they shared, was that of two years ago which depicted water being turned into wine. The ultimate goal, the float-builders shared, is for the floats to tell a faithbased story. “It might hit each per-

son in a different way, but hopefully they get the meaning of the story,” Silveira reflected. “We want the floats to spark conversations.” The hours invested in the float-building are both wonderful and stressful, Silvei-

ra shared, but well worthwhile - particularly given the faith and friendships shared by the volunteers. “It is always a joy seeing the results of our work roll down the street, and watching people’s reaction,” she concluded.

A 2016 float depicting the conversion of water to wine was among the most elaborate created by the float-builders.

Josie Nunes honored to serve as junior queen

Josie Nunes is the 2018-19 OLM junior queen.

GUSTINE - Josie Nunes has marched in Portuguese festas from the San Joaquin Valley to Gustine’s sister city on Terceira. Her next experience will be representing one of the world’s most well-known events of its kind. Josie, the daughter of Celebration presidents Luis and Jennifer Nunes, will be the 2018-19 OLM junior queen. In that role, she will represent Our Lady not only at the upcoming Celebration but at various festas during the year to come. Josie is well-versed in what is entailed, after serving as a Thornton sidemaid and junior Gustine Pentecost Society queen in the past. She has also represented GPS at the Sanjoaninas celebration in Gustine’s sister city of Angra, on the Azores island of Terceira. Her older sister, Darian, who is this year’s senior queen, carried a banner in that celebration. “It was really fun over there,” reported 10-yearold Josie, who is a fifthgrade student at Our Lady of Miracles Catholic School. “I got to see a lot of cousins that I didn’t know I had.”

Now, Josie shared, she is looking forward to representing Our Lady of Miracles for the year to come. “It is an honor to do it,” she stated. Her sidemaids will be Clara Amorim and Cheyanne Verissimo. Josie’s other interests include 4-H and dancing in a Luso-America group. Her parents and sister are not the only family members involved in the upcoming Celebration. Her grandmother, Mary Jo Nunes, has sewn the capes and gowns the queens will wear - as well as most of the novena dresses and their bullfight outfits. The queens are being raised in a family which cherishes its faith and traditions. Both queens have been OLM angels and children’s choir members in the past, their mother stated, and trips back to the Azores are meant in part to connect them with their family heritage. “I want them to understand the traditions and the culture,” Jennifer Nunes explained. “I want them to understand where their family comes from.”

Renowned choir part of OLM tradition GUSTINE - A dedicated group of singers lends their collective voice to the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration each year. Raising their voices in song, the Portuguese choir at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles have shared their faith and devotion through the music they bring to the proceedings. Leading the two dozen or so vocalists is Bernardete Freitas, who joined the choir in the early 1980s and has been director for the past 16 years. “All of us have a lot of faith in the Virgin Mary. We celebrate that faith through song,” said Freitas. The choir performs yearround at the Portuguese masses held each Sunday at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles. When the Celebration

CHOIR

more,” Silveira said of the choir’s involvement. “It is just part of the tradition.” The well-known choir is often invited to sing at other festas around the region, Freitas said.
