2 | 2016 NEWMAN FALL FESTIVAL
TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2016
Mike, Carla Perez named grand marshals NEWMAN - A long-time West Side couple whose volunteer involvement has largely revolved around the youth of the community will be honored as grand marshals of the 2016 Newman Fall Festival. Mike and Carla Perez join the ranks of distinguished community leaders selected as grand marshals for Newman’s annual Labor Day weekend celebration. The couple, who now reside in Gustine after living for many years in Newman, have left a legacy through their involvement in countless endeavors - all of which have had the common thread of benefiting the community in general and its youth in particular. “Our thing is that we have helped people, especially a lot of kids who were going astray,” Mike shared. “Helping them has been most rewarding.”
“We didn’t have a lot of our own children, but we had a lot of kids,” Carla related. “We had a lot of kids who lived in our home. Our kids were always bringing home others. We spent our lives taking care of kids.” The Fall Festival has been among the many activities in which the grand marshals have had a hand. They volunteered to help with the parade for several years - which Mike recalls entailing pre-dawn hours spent placing street barricades and making other preparations for the day’s big event. They also started one of the most popular Fall Festival attractions - the lip-sync contest which for years was a staple of the community celebration. While helping others has been the most rewarding

part of their volunteerism, the couple said, the lip-sync was the most enjoyable. “We had seen lip-sync on television or somewhere and thought that it was something that would be fun for the kids in the area to do,” Carla commented. “It was so much fun.” “The first year was awesome, and it just kept going,” Mike explained. Fall Festival Treasurer Toni Butero said their contributions to the festival, and to the West Side communities as a whole, have been notable. “Mike and Carla have always been willing to help out with the Fall Festival, usually behind the scenes,” Butero commented. “They helped create the culture of what the Fall Festival is all about to so many in our communities.” Their resume of community involvement extends well beyond Fall Festival.
Mike coached youth baseball for some 40 years, served eight years on the Newman Parks and Recreation Commission and was a member of the Stanislaus County Planning Commission for seven years. He has been a board member for Central California Child Development Services for more than 30 years. A Newman child care center operated by the agency is named after Perez in recognition of his many contributions. The couple was involved in the Newman Centennial in 1988, helped promote the school bond measure which funded construction of the new Yolo Middle School, were instrumental in helping found the West Side Band Review and helped bring the DARE drug awareness program to Newman. They were honored as Man of the Year and Woman of the Year by the Minority Women of Stanislaus County in the 1980s. Their efforts were not always through formal
channels, as the Perezes have always stepped up to help when seeing a need - whether collecting used clothes to distribute to those in need or helping those who had been displaced by the flood of Newman in the mid-1990s. “I think it was what we were put here to do, helping others,” Carla related. “We don’t do it for the glory,” Mike added. “We do it from the heart.” Both moved to the West Side as children. Mike (Gustine High Class of 1955) and Carla (Orestimba High Class of 1962), were married in 1969. Together, they have accumulated a lengthy resume of community involvement and service to others. When Labor Day weekend rolls around, the couple will be honored for making a difference in the West Side communities they have called home for decades. Being selected grand marshals, they said, left them both “honored and humbled.”

2016 NEWMAN FALL FESTIVAL | 19
TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2016
Meet the Contestants:
Miss Newman Pageant
Jazmin Araiza
M
y name is Jazmin Araiza and I am 16 years old. I would like to be Miss Newman because this pageant means a lot to the town of Newman and to me as well. It would be an incredible way to represent the community and be more involved in it. Being a part of this town has made me realize all the little things we take for granted, like the way everyone knows each other and cares for one another. Everyone is so close and comes together to make a difference, no matter how small our town may be. The town of Newman is like a family that will always feel like home. I have attended Bonita Elementary School, Yolo Middle School and now Orestimba High School, giving me the best memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. No one believes it when people say high school flies by. I didn’t but here I am going into my senior year. The time the contestants and I have had together at practice is always filled with fun and laughter. I didn’t know what to expect at practice before it started, but I came to realize it is more than just a simple town pageant. We are all a part of something. When we practice, we learn from one another’s mistakes and improve. When we can’t figure out a step in the dance we laugh, because we know we will eventually get it down. Great things happen once you step out of your comfort zone, and we are being shown that with every practice we are a step closer. The Miss Newman Pageant has taught me not to judge myself so harshly, but to take my mistakes and go beyond them. This pageant has also taught me that confidence is key and you can go far in having it and showing it. I want to show young girls and ladies what they are capable of. I want them to know that they should not have a fear of failing but a fear of not trying at all. Nothing should stand in the way of your path to being successful. There may be obstacles put in front of you but you always have the choice to give up your dream or keep chasing it. There is so much potential in all of us and I would love to be a part of other girls’ journeys in discovering their full potential. I want to thank my sponsors, Powers Productions Dance Studio and CEAM, for supporting me in the Miss Newman Pageant 2016. I believe I have the passion and capability of representing our beautiful town of Newman. Thank you.
Lauryn Cabral
M
y name is Lauryn Bailey Cabral and I am 17 years old. Dr. Seuss once said, “You will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” I believe this quote is an accurate representation of my childhood in Newman. Newman has been a major influence on who I am as a person. A majority of my childhood memories have taken place here in this wonderful town. Growing up, my parents have always been heavily involved in the community with organizations such as the Fire Auxiliary, Westside Niners football and Crows Landing baseball. When I began my middle school years, I began to feel like I never really fit in. I can remember going school clothes shopping and before buying anything I would ask myself, “Is this the kind of stuff other people will be wearing?” or “Will other kids think I’m weird if I wear this?” I began to cover my individuality just to try and “fit in.” Going into high school I still had that lingering feeling of not fitting in. Once I began to involve myself in organizations such as Interact and FFAZ I began to feel more comfortable with who I was and I began
to grow comfortable with the idea of expressing my individuality. I would not have been able to come to this conclusion if I had not tried new things. Running for Miss Newman has been an amazing experience. Through this process I have learned many new things, including a dance. This may seem like a trivial thing, but to me it means more than it seems. When I first heard we would have to perform a dance pageant night I was terrified. I was not comfortable with this because I am not used to dancing or anything similar. I had to try to dance despite the way I felt. I had to ignore the feeling of my uneasiness for the first few practices, and I had to try my best and continuously ask for help. I felt pretty awkward alongside my fellow contestants at first, because so many of them had danced before. After the first few practices I realized it was okay I wasn’t good at dancing because I was good at other things. Learning the dance helped me realize that everyone has their own talents and things they are good at. I want to be Miss Newman because I want to represent the town that I grew up in and I would like to show younger girls and boys that it is okay to be who you are, to try new things and do the things you love. I want to show people that being different is something to be proud of. I want to influence adults and children in Newman that it is never too late to try new things. I have learned that trying one new thing can change your life forever, can lead you to discover talents and can lead you to discover passions you might not have known you had. Taking a chance once can lead you to discover new things about yourself that can change your life forever. I am glad I have been a part of this pageant. Everything it contains has gotten me out of my comfort zone and gotten me used to doing new things. I would like to thank my sponsor, Spotlight Dance Company, for allowing me to partake in such a wonderful event. I would also like to thank the pageant coordinators Crickett, Sage and Harley. Your dedication and helpfulness to our group will never be forgotten. Without the help of these individuals I would not have had the opportunity to be apart of this life-changing experience.
Ashley Newton
M
y name is Ashley Newton, and I am currently 15 years old. I attend Orestimba High School as a sophomore. There are many different reasons as to why I want to be Miss Newman. Most of my reasons involve giving back to the community. One of the many reasons I would like to become Miss Newman is because I would love to give back to the community that has supported me and given me so much throughout the years. If I were to become Miss Newman I could give back to the community by helping out in the best possible ways I can. This would include talking about the community around all the different people that I would meet, and saying how good their business is. Another reason is because I would be given the opportunity to represent all of the small business owners and community members here in Newman. Becoming Miss Newman would help me build my organization and communication skills greatly. My organization and communication skills are crucial to representing this town, because being that we live in such a small town it will help me to teach others about that. Also, enhancing my communication skills while being Miss Newman would help me not only while being Miss Newman but help me greatly in my future on my path to becoming a psychiatrist. First of all I would like to thank my sponsors, Maria Medina at Just Life Tax and Financial, and Frank Heiberger at Oasis Pool Company. I would also like to thank my beauty team, Jeneen Bettencourt, Brenda Perez, and Nancy Lerno. If I were to become Miss Newman it would mainly be because I really want to give back to my community.

Mary Pimentel
P
eople come from all over the world to see California and its wonders. They want to see our beaches, Disneyland, celebrities planted on every corner, national parks, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Mount Shasta, you name it. California has it all, and not a single person can deny wanting to enjoy every bit of it. However, it’s very likely that those tourists have yet to visit the town of Newman. This small town holds 10,[639 people with around 2.1 square miles of land, and is a place that shows compassion, union, backbone and tradition. My name is Mary Pimentel. I am 17 years old, and my parents are Raymond Pimentel and Gisel-Garcia Pimentel. This year I will be a senior at Orestimba High School. I have lived in Newman my entire life and know that no place feels like home the way Newman does to me. As I grow and my footsteps became larger, they still continue to leave marks all over this town. Sherman Park, Pioneer Park, Barrington Park, Main Street, Hunt Elementary, Yolo Middle School, Orestimba High, Duck Blind Circle and Spring Court all hold my footprints and memories. I would like to thank my sponsors, Marlene and George Souza from Newman MiniStorage. They have supported and blessed me with this incredible opportunity. I would also like to credit Crickett Brinkman, the woman behind the scenes that makes all of this magic happen. She and her amazingly generous daughters, Sage and Harley Brinkman, have helped us seven girls come out of our comfort zones and recognize our true beauty, as well as love ourselves and show what we have to offer to this town. Being a contestant for Miss Newman is better than what I had originally imagined it would be. Throughout this journey I have befriended wonderful people and grown as an individual. This experience of being a contestant has taught me that I want to influence younger and all members of our community, that it is never too late to follow your dreams. It is better to take a risk and face your fears than to spend the rest of your life wondering what could have been and regretting your decisions. Life is too short to be full of regret. I want to encourage all citizens of Newman to run wholeheartedly

toward their goals, no matter what others around them may say. I see Newman and its people in an even greater light than before. I am so happy that this is the place that I call home and that you are who I call my community. I want to make this town proud of itself and of its achievements, and I also want to inspire all of the youth of Newman to aspire to one day be in my position and to chase their dreams. I admire Newman’s talent and capability, and to be able to represent this unique and warm town would be the most honoring yet humbling gift. Nothing feels greater than being able to represent the place that made me, me. Thank you.

y name is Arianna Romero. I am 16 years old and the daughter of Leigh Ann and Armando Romero. I am a student at Orestimba High School where I am beyond excited to be starting my senior year. This fall, I have decided to participate in the 2016 Miss Newman Pageant alongside some of my peers. Some of the reasons I have decided to become more involved within the community are to help provide an example for our youth, and sustain integrity representing Newman. As I grew up in Newman, I admired the young ladies from previous Miss Newman pageants and always thought of them as great examples in our community. They have led me to strive to want to represent the city of Newman myself. If I win, I believe that during my time of being Miss Newman, I would help our younger generations get more involved by mentioning different activities and clubs they can join, or tell them some of my personal experiences that I may have enjoyed. Also I would love to become a role model and encourage other girls to step

out of their comfort zones and apply for the Miss Newman Pageant in the future to keep the city’s tradition alive. First entering the pageant, I never realized how much effort was put into making this event possible. To those not involved directly with the pageant, there’s a lot more to it than it may seem. It takes dedication not only from the contestants but also from families, organizers and the community. I would like to give recognition to those who have helped make this possible for me including my family, my friends and support through my sponsors, JJ Liquors and El Campéstre. I would be proud and honored to be our city’s Miss Newman 2016.

T
here are so many reasons why I want to be Miss Newman. I know that one of the most important reasons is that coming into this whole experience I felt as if it was just a typical beauty pageant, emphasizing on beauty and I came to find out that I was wrong. “Beauty” means so many different things to different people. Beauty to me means the type of person that someone is and is not determined by their physical appearance. Beauty is intellect, beauty is kindness, beauty is the type of heart that a person holds within. Growing up within this community I have learned the true meaning of beauty. I have seen early on how teachers at the Newman Nursery School have taught the very young children of our community their first lessons, teaching them how to say, “please and thank you.” I have seen so many organizations, whether it be Lions Club, Rotary or so many others, donate their time and put in the effort to strive and make a difference within the lives of the families in need of not only our community but all over the world. From volunteering in these activities I have learned to value people. I have learned that it is so important to strive to make a difference within lives of others because at the same time they are making the difference within your life. From all these beautiful people, I have learned values and lessons that will go with me wherever life may take me. From this beautiful community, I have learned what it is to give back, I have learned what it means to be selfless. All of these lessons and these values that I have learned have made me the beautiful person that I am today. As Miss Newman, I want to represent true beauty. I want represent the intellect, the kindness and the beautiful caring hearts that the people of Newman have. I want to be able to embody and exert all the lessons and values that I have learned. I want to be able to represent the true meaning of beauty, which in my eyes is the
community of Newman. I would like to thank my sponsor, Stephens Realty, for giving me this amazing opportunity to run for Miss Newman. They have impacted my life so greatly, I want to be able to impact the community in the same way.

s a young teenager in a small town I have always tried to find a way to get involved. Every year in the West Side Index I would come across the Miss Newman article. I have had a very big interest ever since, although I have always hesitated to run as I did not have much confidence back then. Being my last year in this small town made me realize it’s better to take risk than to regret. Watching the pageant and attending the Newman Fall Festival became an annual thing for my family and I. One of my primary reasons for wanting to be Miss Newman is to be a role model and to encourage others to come out of their comfort zone. Being involved in the Miss Newman Pageant helps you develop self-confidence and helps boost your selfesteem. That is what I want for other boys and girls. When I was smaller, I always looked up to the Miss Newman girls and I want to be able to do the same and have others look up to me. Especially to make my sponsor, Carolyn Beach from Westside Pallet, proud as she has watched me grow up through the years. Second, being able to represent a city that I have lived in all my life would be a great honor. Reflecting 10 years from now, knowing that I achieved such a big goal in such a small town, as the town itself has given me many opportunities and has helped me learn many life lessons. I would like to be Miss Newman mostly for the learning experience. I myself have to not seen pageantry as a competition, as we all still have much to learn from. It gives you the opportunity to show your leadership and spread awareness to others. I want to be able to give back everything this town has done for me by doing the right thing. Newman has taught me so much about myself. The pageant has taught me about grace, proper communication and many other things. To be able to be represented as Miss Newman would be a great way to show others that anything can be done as long as you work for it. At the end you realize and see the new you and the better person you have become.
