Andrade honored as festival grand marshal NEWMAN - The 2015 Newman Fall Festival grand marshal has devoted herself to nurturing local children and community service. Sharon Andrade joins the ranks of distinguished community leaders who have been honored as grand marshal of Newman’s signature celebration. Festival organizers said Andrade was a deserving selection for the honor, given her decades of dedication to the community and its youth. “She has dedicated her life to teaching young children and volunteering countless hours to service clubs,” commented Toni Butero, Fall Festival treasurer. “Everything she does, she gives 110 percent and embodies all that a grand marshal should. The committee felt strongly that Sharon’s ongoing contributions to Newman and
her unwavering support of early childhood education made her an ideal choice for their top honor.” Andrade may be best known for her work as a teacher at the Newman Coop Nursery School. She started helping teacher Janet Perry in 1979 as a classroom volunteer, Andrade related, and two and a half years later became the teacher for the ages 4/5 class. She has taught that class ever since, helping the hundreds of pupils who have come through her classroom prepare for kindergarten and beyond. Andrade brings to that role a love of children and passion for early childhood education. Her students, she shared, learn far more than the academic basics that help

prepare them for kindergarten. “I want them to leave having respect for themselves and others, with positive self-esteem and having learned to cooperate with others and show their compassion toward one another,” the grand marshal explained. Her educational involvement did not stop at the nursery school. She was involved in starting an after-school care program at Von Renner known as Stone Soup, which was a forerunner of the after-school program. Andrade was also an after-school program coordinator at Yolo Middle School for about four years, and remains involved as an after-school substitute serving where needed in the district. Education was not her initial career focus, Andrade acknowledged, but
life experiences led her down that path. She had initially been studying police science, and during the course of that experience was part of home visits where she found children living in deplorable conditions. Andrade turned to education, she said, to help make a positive difference in the lives of children - a mission that has been a passion for decades.
Family focus Andrade, a 1965 Orestimba graduate, left Newman for a time after marrying her husband Ken in 1968. The couple lived for nearly a decade in Southern California where both their children, daughters Deanne and Kathleen, were born. After returning to Newman in 1977, they quickly became involved in activities to help provide their children - and countless others - enrichment opportunities. Andrade was involved
as a Girl Scout and 4-H leader for more than a decade. She and her husband were active in booster clubs while their children were going through Orestimba. “Wherever our kids were, we were there. We were always involved,” Andrade noted.
Community clubs Andrade is also an active member and secretary of the Newman Lions Club. She is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Friends of the Newman Library, Newman Garden Club, Orestimba 50-Plus Club and Gustine Seniors. Now, the community will show its appreciation for her many contributions when Andrade is recognized as grand marshal. “I am very, very excited,” Andrade shared. “It is such an honor to be asked to do that.”
