Celebration one of faith for OLM president The faith and devotion which draws thousands of visitors to the small valley community of Gustine each September is the foundation of the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration. That faith has long been a central focus in the lives of OLM President Alcino and Maria Nunes, who are leading the dedicated team of officers, directors and volunteers responsible for organizing the 2014 Celebration. Serving as OLM president is an honor which follows years of involvement in the Celebration. When asked to be vice president by 2013 President Alfred and Lucy Nunes, Alcino said, accepting the invitation which meant they would be president this year

- came naturally in light of their devotion to Our Lady. Their involvement in the Celebration, however, goes back decades. “I immigrated to this country (from St. Jorge) in June 1977, and in September that year I attended the OLM Celebration, Alcino recalled. He was 18 at the time. Maria’s family came to the United States from Terceira when she was 10. Attending the Celebration soon became a tradition dear to her family. Maria was a sidemaid to the senior OLM queen in 1980. Alcino said they have been helping with the Celebration in one way or another for more than 20 years, and he has been

a director for about 15 years. This year, the couple has embraced their their new role as president guided by strong faith and devotion. They have been surrounded by those who share the same faith, which has made their journey all the more fulfilling. “We have a very good group of people who are always there to support us, Alcino reflected. The devotion to Our Lady is reflected on the routes, where the generosity of the faithful shines brightly even in difficult economic times. “We have found that there are certain gifts which reflect their devo-

Senior queen anticipates journey of faith Morgan Nunes was raised around the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration and other Portuguese festas, following a family tradition of involvement in the traditional events. Now, she is preparing to represent Our Lady of Miracles as its senior queen. Morgan is well-versed in the dedication and responsibilities which go hand-in-hand with the honor of representing an organization in that role. She recently completed her year as the senior queen for the Gustine Pentecost Society, is a past junior queen for OLM and has been a sidemaid for various organizations. Morgan has grown up around festas with a family which values the faith and heritage involved in the traditional celebrations.

“All my sisters were involved in the festas, and as I grew up I got involved thanks to my parents. It has been a family tradition, Morgan explained. “It is part of our family’s life, said her mother Florie. “It is an important tradition to hand down through the generations. It is part of their heritage. The family involvement was never more evident than six years ago, when Morgan was junior queen, her sister Taylor was senior queen, sisters Alexa and Megan Nunes were Taylor’s sidemaids and parents John and Florie Nunes were OLM president. While she greatly enjoyed that experience, Morgan said, she has a renewed anticipation as she looks forward to representing Our Lady of Miracles as its senior queen.

“I feel like this time I will get more spiritually out of it. When I was younger I didn’t understand it as much. I understand more what is going on and can be more involved, she explained. The OLM Celebration is a 10-day journey of faith, Morgan reflected, which is culminated by the moving procession which returns the statue of Our Lady from Henry Miller Park to the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles. It was during that procession a year ago that Morgan made the final decision to accept the invitation of Alcino and Maria Nunes (this year’s OLM president) to be senior queen. “I knew it was the right answer, she shared. Our Lad y of Miracles Society Presidents 19336 –2014 In 1935 a festa was held by the Portuguese American Club in spite of the fact that the statue of Our Lady of Miracles had not yet arrived, nor had the Our Lady of Miracles Society been formed or sanctioned by the local church. In 1937 each group named a queen for their festa. In 1938 the two groups merged to form The Our Lady of Miracles Celebration Committee.

Themed floats featured in bodo de leite GUSTINE - Themed floats have become a traditional part of the OLM Celebration bodo de leite since their initial appearance more than a dozen years ago. A variety of themes (selected each year by the OLM president) have been portrayed through the unique floats, which are created by a team of volunteers in the weeks leading up to the Celebration. Fatima Silveira, who with husband John were OLM president when the floats made their Celebration debut in 2001, has chaired the float-building the past two years. Prior to 2001, she noted, traditional scenes were depicted during the bodo de leite but not through the themed floats. Oxen carts, each representing an island in the Azores, were used to depict the Silveiras’ selected theme 13 years ago when the floats made their debut. Since that time, the tradition has taken root and evolved through the years. “It has expanded. Every year there have been

The 2014 theme will be “A Life of Faith,” which Silveira said builds on last year’s Biblical theme. The story will be portrayed in eight scenes depicted on seven floats, she added. We depend on each other. We make so many memories working together through these couple of weeks, friendships that we build even stronger.” The float-building has taken place on the grounds of the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles the past couple of years. In addition to providing a central location for floatbuilding, Silveira noted, the buildings offer storage convenient to the start of the bodo de leite. “On that day, it is just around the corner we go,”

of Our Lady from the capella in Henry Miller Park to the Shrine of Our Lady on Sunday evening, and the blessing of the president and their family during Sunday mass among the most meaningful and moving aspects of the Celebration. While based in faith, the Celebration is also steeped in the Azorean traditions which generations of immigrants hold dear. The event includes an abundance of traditional food and entertainment,

as well as the popular bloodless bullfights. The Celebration will stay true to the traditions which have spanned decades, Alcino and Maria emphasized. But one aspect which changes annually is the theme of the bodo de leite, or parade of animals. This year’s theme, Maria explained, is “A Life of Faith. “It is devoted to Mary, Mother of God, and her life of faith, explained Maria. A series of floats will depict various times

in Mary’s life. Maria and Alcino reside in Gustine. She is employed at Pioneer Drug, while he is in the dairy industry. They consider themselves to be richly blessed in their faith, a devotion which is central to their lives. The significance of the OLM Celebration, they said, is based on “our faith in Our Lady, and our belief and our love for our religion. We have a lot of faith in Our Lady of Miracles.
