Faith, family central to the lives of OLM presidents Faith and family are cornerstones on which the 2016 Our Lady of Miracles Celebration presidents build their lives. Both come together as integral elements in the renowned celebration of faith which Turlock residents Martin and Melissa Cunha will oversee this year as presidents. The influence and guidance of family while growing up helped instill in each a deep faith and an appreciation for the traditions they share, which they in turn are passing on to their own children. “It is an important part of our family,” Martin said of the involvement in Portuguese festas in general and specifically the OLM Celebration. The Gustine event is unique, he added, because

it honors Our Lady - the Blessed Mother. “There are so many Holy Spirit celebrations, but this one just stands on its own,” said the Cunhas, who previously were presidents of the Holy Spirit festa in Turlock. Martin grew up attending festas, but even from a young age recalls the OLM Celebration as being particularly special. “My dad had a dairy when I was a child, and he worked long hours to provide for us. I went to a lot of festas with my mother and my other siblings. We would always see our grandparents there, especially at OLM,” he related. While the demands of running the dairy prevented his father from attending festas on a regular basis, Martin added, “my dad

always made time to go to the OLM Celebration.” Melissa attended few festas as a child, but became more involved when she started dating Martin - and now they regularly attend the celebrations with their own children. The couple is paying tribute to family with their selection of rosaries as the presidents’ gift that is presented to the generous donors who support the Celebration. “My grandmother helped raise me and was a big part of my faith. She was the one who taught me how to pray. Martin’s grandmother was also a big part of our lives before she passed away,” Melissa said. “The reason we came up with the rosary was because of them.

Martin and Melissa Cunha are presidents of the 2016 OLM Celebration.

A Message from the President W

e would like to first thank Our Lady of Miracles for her intercession as we were graced with the honor of serving as presidents this year. This festa, established 80 years ago, has a legacy of faith, prayer and devotion. Last year, and especially this year, we have seen the dedication, the support and the consistent willingness to help from everyone involved. We have been, and still are amazed with the stories

we hear about “promesas” made throughout the years. These stories are truly heartwarming and make those long days of preparing all worth it. A sincere thank you to our family, friends, officers and directors who have supported us. Without them, we would not be able to take the role of presidency. We pray that future generations will take the lead and continue this blessed tradition.

– Martin and Melissa Cunha, President 2016

Our Lady of Miracles, pray for us!

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 We wanted to honor their memory and what they instilled in each of us.” Martin, who is an ag commodities broker, and Melissa, an elementary school teacher, said they are honored to serve as presidents of the OLM Celebration and welcomed the opportunity despite the long hours and commitment it represents. “So many people are devoted to Our Lady and what she symbolizes, it just keeps me going,” said Martin, adding that the devotion is evident as he goes about the routes to accept contributions. “People are expecting you and are very generous in giving what they can. Their devotion gives me the chills.” The couple has been blessed to meet many new friends and has seen the

devotion and support for the Celebration, Melissa added. The devotion, she said, is reflected “in Gustine itself, and the people in the community who come to your aid. We’re outsiders coming in; they are the backbone. That has been a huge help.” While the Celebration is in part tribute to a shared heritage and traditions, the presidents said, faith is the foundation of the event which draws thousands to Gustine each September. That faith is reflected in the 2016 bode de leite theme “Miracles,” which honors the works of Jesus, and throughout the event. While the Celebration has many moving moments, Melissa said, she finds the most powerful to be the novenas which lead up to the full weekend of activities. “It is a good reflection time. You are not being pulled, called or texted,”

she reflected. “It is my time to have my faith and be at one.” “That is one of the times that you feel the most touched, and you truly appreciate your faith,” Martin added. Celebrating a shared heritage is also an important aspect of the event. “It is where our parents and grandparents came from,” Melissa commented. “It is important to keep that culture alive. We get caught up in the latest and greatest, but we need to remember our roots.” Such common bonds bring thousands together in unity at the Celebration each year. “What better place to enjoy fellowship than where families of the same faith unite?” reflected Martin. “I view the Celebration as a place of faith, families, close friends and fellowship. That is what sets it apart from the rest.”

Julia shared. “As the years go on, you understand it a lot more, how much it means and what it represents.” Sharing the faith and instilling an appreciation of the traditions surrounding the Celebration and other festas with their children is important, she added. With the Celebration fast approaching, Madison is preparing to assume her new responsibilities. She and her sidemaids will be a part of many aspects of the Celebration, from participating in the novenas to marching in the processions. Those preparations include practicing for her role in the novena. “I have to sing it all in Portuguese,” she said of her role. “I am going to have to work on my Portuguese.” She also has designed her cape, as each queen does. Madison opted for a waist-length cape adorned with lace and the image of Nossa Senhora. Madison is also taking on some less traditional responsibilities. Madison has spent many hours helping her aunt make the medallions which will be distributed at the Celebration.

A Hilmar Middle School eighth-grader will represent Our Lady of Miracles as its senior queen for the year to come. Thirteen-year-old Madison Fontes of Denair, the daughter of Julia and Nelson Fontes, will accept the OLM crown in the traditional exchange prior to mass on Sunday, Sept. 11. She is the niece of OLM Presidents Martin and Melissa Cunha, and readily agreed when asked to accept the honor. Madison has twice been a sidemaid in the past - once for Turlock and once for the Gustine Pentecost Society. This will be her first experience as a queen, and she will be representing one of the largest and most cherished celebrations of its kind. The new senior queen is quick to point out the distinction. “The other festas (represent) Holy Spirits, but this one is our Lady of Miracles. We will be representing Our Lady of Miracles,” Madison noted. “It is all about her. She made miracles for many people.” Madison’s mother said Portuguese festas have been part of the family’s life. “We have grown up going to Turlock and OLM,”

The new senior queen said she enjoys the social aspects of the Celebration as well as appreciating the faith-based and cultural traditions. In addition to catching up with old friends, she enjoys making new acquaintances at festas. Her sidemaids are Hayleigh Faria, who was queen when Madison was a sidemaid in Turlock, and schoolmate and long-time friend Kaylene Rocha.

In addition to attending and participating in festas, Madison loves sports, is involved in travel softball and enjoys spending time with her family. There will be plenty of family time in the year to come as the Fontes family proudly travels from festa to festa representing Our Lady of Miracles. While Madison will represent Our Lady of Miracles, her mother said the entire family will be involved. “It is an honor, and a family commitment,” Julia reflected. “We are very honored to do it.”

Kaytlin Cunha to represent OLM as junior queen The 2016-17 Our Lady of Miracles junior queen is already well-versed in many of the traditions of the Portuguese festas, but is looking forward to creating many new memories and experiences while representing one of the most widely-known celebrations in the year to come. Nine-year-old Kaytlin Cunha of Turlock will accept her crown as the new junior queen prior to mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles on Sunday, Sept. 11. Kaytlin, the daughter of OLM Presidents Martin and Melissa Cunha, regularly attends festas - in particular the OLM Celebration. At the young age of 4, she was junior queen in Turlock. Kaytlin’s memories of that experience range from marching in parades to releasing a dove to riding in a carriage. The Elim Elementary

School fourth-grader said she is looking forward to being a queen once again, and believes that, five years after her initial experience, she will bring a greater understanding and appreciation to the experience. She already is a fan of festas. “I love the food and the dancing. I will dance until my feet hurt,” Kaytlin shared. “I have friends who go, and I hang out with them.” Kaytlin’s interest extends to the Luso-American group, and she is interested in giving the folklore dancing a try. First things first, though, and Kaytlin’s attention is currently occupied with preparations for the upcoming OLM Celebration. She and her sidemaids are practicing for their role in the Celebration, which includes singing - in Portuguese - during

the novenas. “I really like my mom’s theme for the Celebration,” Kaytlin added. “We are doing something very new.” Her sidemaids are friends Lauren Olivera (one of Kaytlin’s sidemaids when she was junior queen in Turlock) and Reese Oliveira. Her other interests include gymnastics, swimming and making videos. For Kaytlin, representing Our Lady of Miracles as junior queen will be the latest chapter in her involvement in Portuguese celebrations. Her parents said the family’s regular attendance at the OLM Celebration and Portuguese festas helps instill in their three children faith, devotion and an appreciation of their heritage. “It is an important part of our family,” Martin Cunha said of their involvement.

OLM statue tradition spans generations GUSTINE - On one September Sunday each year, families gather in Gustine to continue a tradition that spans generations. Following the Sunday morning mass during the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration, those families join the procession back to Henry Miller Park, carrying statues of saints just as their fathers and grandfathers did in years past. The statues have long been an OLM Celebration tradition, one cherished by the families who have carried the same statues in the procession for decades. Frank and Lil Amaral, who have overseen the tradition for 25 years or longer, said that in that time only one of the 20 statues carried in the procession has changed family hands. That number does not include the statue of Our Lady, which now is carried each year by bearers selected by the OLM president. “It has been the same families that decorate (and carry) them for many years. Once a family is responsible for a particular statue, they just carry it on,” Lil explained. “I have a list of names of people in line to do a statue if a family ever gives one up, but the same families do it every year.”

Exactly when the statue tradition started is somewhat unclear, although Frank recalls seeing the procession of statues during World War II years. One long-time participant said the tradition goes back even further. Joe Gomes of Hilmar said his grandfather acquired a statue of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception which was carried by his father and other family members in 1936 - the first year of the celebration. Four generations of family members have since carried that statue, said Gomes, who has been among the statue-bearers since around 1980. “For us, it is carrying on a family tradition,” said Gomes. That tradition reflects family roots dating back to the Azores. He said his grandfather was raised in a village on Terceira, the Azores, not far from the town where the celebration on which the OLM Celebration is based was held. The statue tradition is cherished in the family, Gomes related. His father had five brothers, and collectively they carried the statue for many years.

STATUES

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 “When my God-father (one of the uncles) could not continue he asked me to do it. I have been doing it in his honor ever since. My brother goes in my father’s place, and other cousins do it in their father’s place,” he explained. The tradition of decorating the statue has also been carried down through generations, Gomes shared, and today he, his wife and daughters decorate the statue. The number of statues grew through the years, the Amarals said. Often, they explained, the families carry the statues through a “promise” made to the Blessed Mother in appreciation of a prayer answered. That was particularly common in war years, they added, when Gustine sent many of its young men in harm’s way. “There were a lot of promises made by families

for their sons,” Frank explained. The practices surrounding the statues have changed through the years. While some families have long decorated and carried the same statue, the Amarals said, at one time many of the statues were decorated by a group of women and carried by a variety of volunteers. In the late 70s, Lil explained, the decision was made to assign each statue to a family responsible for decorating and carrying it. “Certain families had carried the statues for many years prior to that, but even if the same family had carried a statue, they may not have been the ones who did the decorating. Some did, some didn’t,” Lil noted. “As each family took over, they had their own ideas and style of decorating them.” Each year, the Amarals send out letters advising the families of the dates and times that statues will be ready for decorating. The statues are carried in the post-mass procession

from the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles, where they are on display throughout the day and then returned to the church along with the statue of Our Lady of Miracles in the midnight procession signaling the conclusion of the Celebration. Separately, the traditions surrounding the statue of Our Lady have evolved as well. Until 1991, Lil said, families signed up to take a turn decorating and carrying the statue of Our Lady. When the decision was made at that time to change the practice and allow each year’s president to decorate the statue and decide who will carry Our Lady, the Amarals had a waiting list of families for the 15 years to come. That, they said, reflects the deep devotion of the faithful. “Every year when it comes around there is a special feeling about the whole Celebration that just brings us all together in the faith in Our Lady,” Frank concluded.

Devoted volunteer dedicates vacation time to Celebration The legion of volunteers who make the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration possible each September includes a Los Banos woman whose devotion speaks volumes. For the past 13 years, Adelaide Reis has penciled in a portion of her annual vacation days to volunteer her time at the Celebration, quietly helping out wherever needed throughout the event. Reis, who works at a Gilroy hospital, started attending the Celebration after moving from mainland Portugal to Gilroy some 35 years ago, and began volunteering after moving to Los Banos. Her willing involvement reflects the deep devotion which is the foundation of the Celebration. “The faith, the belief is special,” Reis said. “All the problems and worries that we have in our lives, with faith and prayer Our Lady will alleviate those and make us stronger.” Reis said she will do whatever is needed to support each year’s presidents - in this case Martin and Melissa Cunha. Melissa Cunha, who first met Reis a year ago when she and her husband were vice presidents, said the help of

volunteers so dedicated to the Celebration is invaluable - and even more moving because she uses vacation time to help out. “You don’t know all the things behind the scene that need to be done,” Cunha reflected. “It is a lot of work. She does it all with a smile on her face. The Celebration would not be alive without the people like her.” Each January, Reis puts in for vacation time in September to be able to help at the Celebration. She is involved from the start of the novenas through the big weekend. Much of her work is behind the scenes, such as helping prepare food and with decorations....or simply running errands to help provide what is needed where it is needed. Reis is usually present at two of the Celebration’s most moving events. On Saturday of the big weekend, she can usually be found pinning medals on those who are visiting the statue of Our Lady in the capella in Henry Miller Park. Reis sees the faithful arriving with a range of emotion, from tears to joy. “Knowing that she is part

of that moment in their lives means a lot to her,” said Cunha, who helped translate Reis’ comments. Reis also distributes handkerchiefs to those entering the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles Sunday night as a procession returns the statue of Our Lady. The Celebration brings together those of shared faith and heritage. “Sometimes you only see people once a year and it is at that Celebration. Sometimes you will go years without seeing somebody, but then you will see them there. It is like a communal meeting place,” Reis expressed through Cunha. Others in Reis’ family are also involved in the Celebration. Her husband Alduar is a director, she said, and son George Reis is among the entertainers who perform at the event. For her, the Celebration is a time of hard work but also of joy and devotion. Her faith is a cornerstone of her life, and she plans to volunteer at the Celebration until she can do so no more. “Our Lady of Miracles has helped me,” Reis reflected. “After the day you are tired, but I look up and say ‘Thank you, Our Lady of Miracles’.”

Long-time volunteers continue devotion to Celebration A history with the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration that stretches back to the mid-1970s for one Gustine couple strongly continues. Faith and devotion are integral to the lives of John and Cecelia Pires - and at no time is that more evident than each September, when the OLM Celebration rolls around. They - and their families - have long been a part of the Celebration. Two daughters have been senior queens - Cecelia in 1988 and Michelle in 1992. In 1990, John and Cecelia were OLM presidents. Through the years their children and now their grandchildren have participated in the Celebration as novena angels and in other roles. Today, John continues to serve as an OLM director and the couple helps however they can at the Celebration. John, for example, continues to help on the routes, visiting Celebration supporters to collect donations....unless he happens to be making a pre-Celebration visit to his native Azores. It is something he has done since being vice president in 1989. Cecelia helps out in a number of ways as well, including providing the sweetbreads which are

handed out in the early morning hours of the Saturday night vigil in Henry Miller Park - which for years she personally baked. That practice, she explained, is in memory and honor of the couple’s son who passed away in 1994. Melissa Cunha, who with husband Martin are the 2016 OLM presidents, said the couple’s contributions and historical knowledge of the Celebration are of huge benefit. “My husband likes to say that the two of them are the Godparents of the Celebration,” she related. “They have been around so long... they are people we can go to with questions and they know the answers. For newcomers coming in, it is very helpful. They are devoted, and we appreciate it.” The OLM Celebration is well-known in the Azores, John said, and was spoken of on the islands. When he came to the United States and was living in the Chino area in the mid-1970s, John shared, he first attended the Celebration. “In Chino, it was the talk of the town to come to Gustine for the Celebration,” he said. “People would take their vacation time to come to the festa.” The couple’s journey

eventually brought them to Gustine - with stops in Hilmar and Newman - and they have rarely missed a Celebration. Since 1982, John has attended all but one Celebration and Cecelia has missed only two.

Each was for family-related matters. Both missed one year to attend a family wedding, and Cecelia missed another to be present at the birth of a grandchild in Australia. Even there, she recalled,
