Design is at once, evocative, and rational. An artist, understands their medium – both in its physical form and tactile expression (for example, the use of paint), and athe viewer’s imagination and association that the painting evokes. A master, knows all of these parts, by heart.
Good art captures our thinking and focusses it on varying aspects of ourselves – positive, negative, hopeful, derelict. Design in Architecture can be a di cult and challenging business – creating beautiful results requires thought, knowledge and e ort.
Can a Building be like a Painting? Well, yes, it can be. It can be the canvas onto which its users and inhabitants, paint their lives, in their various forms; physical and personal expressions as colours, materials, relationships and sensations.
The power of architecture is to vitalise this dialogue we have with ourselves, about ourselves, within an environment. This dialogue can be grandiose, on a massive and powerful scale, and it can be circumspect, small, personal and private.
Architecture is our friend; it moves with us every day. What we see in the world is often what we see within, there is something special about good architecture because it reminds us about the good parts of ourselves, and the good things that we can produce.
Good architecture is helpful and supportive of this relationship with ourselves, and with each other. As such, it is an essential tool.

For Australian Tax O ce Design Concept and Feasibility
Matthew was invited by Knight Frank Property to provide Design Concepts for a new O ce Tower on a complex site within the high-density frame of Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Chatswood.
Based on the idea of a Moth about to take ight, and the unique and interesting patterns on its wings, the Façade Design and Tower form provided a unique and interesting refresh of a commercial o ce building. Touching the ground lightly, instead of landing on a built podium, the tower’s lower oors open up to provide interesting and unique external garden spaces and a range of staggered terraces supporting outdoor dining and retail experiences in a uniquely lush and landscaped local environment. In combination with hydration and irrigation of these garden spaces, this ground oor ‘zone’ will provide a comfortable self-regulating outdoor microclimate, year round.
Completed in under two weeks, the Project also demonstrates Matthew’s ability to work quickly with the REVIT model and hand sketching to produce reliable project yield characteristics and planning compliance diagrams, and at the same time create unique, interesting and resolved design.
