This is our year With the change in control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, conservatives are in the best position to achieve our goals since George W. Bush was president. C on g r e s s m a n Sam Joh n s on , Re pu b l ic a n f r om Te x a s , has ta ken a bold step to do somet hing about t he impending collapse of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Trust Fund. He will not allow money to be transferred from the Old Age Trust fund to the Disability Trust Fund unless we fi rst address the fiscal stability of the Old Age Trust Fund. The Disability Trust Fund will run out of money in 2016.

by Dan Weber President & Founder, Association of Mature American Citizens

The AMAC Social Security Guarantee could well become the basis of solving the Social Security fi scal dilemma. We have scheduled a series of meetings with key leaders in Congress within the next few weeks. Also, we are organizing a Social Security workshop to be held on Capitol Hill in March. The workshop will bring together experts from several think tanks in Washington with Congressional Members and staffers. So keep a watch out for Social Security updates and a call for action when it is needed. In this issue we will cover notable actors and entertainers from Hollywood, and we hope you will be pleasantly surprised to discover the number of stars who are strong conservatives. We will also begin a series on the Race to the White House as we follow the candidates from both parties to next year’s presidential campaign and the election of a new president in 2016. History is being made at an amazingly fast rate in medicine so we have decided to include a new section on medical breakthroughs to help our members follow the latest in medical advances. Thank you to all the AMAC delegates who attended the fi rst delegate conference which was held at The Villages, Florida. Much was accomplished and the information we shared will give a big boost to our accomplishments in 2015. Sincerely,

Dan Weber, Publisher

Brain Wave “Miracle” Helps Returning Soldiers Suffering With PTSD Magnetic Resonance Therapy may help Autism & Alzheimer’s patients

P

ost Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD] has been the bane of many veterans who fought in the Iraq and Afghan wars, causing insomnia, panic attacks, alcohol abuse and even suicidal thoughts. Until now, there were few, if any, effective treatment alternatives. But, a new procedure using Magnetic Resonance Therapy developed at the Brain Treatment Center in Newport Beach, CA, may hold the key to a cure. Veterans who have successfully undergone the MRT treatment use terms like “miracle,” “game-changer” and “waking up” to describe the results they achieved at the BTC facility. PTSD is “what we used to call ‘battle fatigue’ or ‘shell shock’ and it manifests itself in a variety of debilitating ways. Returning soldiers are awakened in the midst of war-based nightmares. They experience panic attacks and some harbor thoughts of taking their own lives. One report showed an 80% increase in suicides among soldiers returning from the war fronts in the Middle East during the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.” AMAC is keeping a watchful eye on the MRT treatment alternative because of its potentially effective use in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. “But, the fact that it is helping our wounded warriors to cope with the aftermath of war is an important fi rst focus.” Many of the PTSD treatments to date have focused on the symptoms of the disorder; the MRT procedure appears to concentrate on the workings of the brain itself. As Dr. Kevin T. Murphy, Vice Chair of the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences, UC San Diego Medical Center, put it: “Addressing the core frequency mismatch that occurs in various parts of the brain,

8 | www.amac.us

and not the patient’s symptoms per se, allows this system to be potentially useful in numerous psychological and neurological disorders, from autism to Alzheimers.” Dr. Yi Jin, medical director of the Brain Treatment Center, is careful in an encouraging way when he describes the successes of the BTC’s new therapeutic approach. “We are not claiming efficacy, but we are seeing clinical responses that are positive.”

by John Grimaldi Early Warning System for Recurrent Prostate Cancer Mike Hawker’s prostate cancer is not in remission. As his doctor says, it’s just “on probation.” So every six months, Hawker travels from his home in Alaska, where he serves in the state legislature, to Rochester, Minnesota, where doctors at the Mayo Clinic track down even the tiniest new tumors in his body using an ingenious new technique. “It helps you hunt down this otherwise invisible cancer,” says Eugene Kwon, MD, a cancer researcher who helped developed the technique. Dr. Kwon, like any smart hunter, uses food to lure his prey. In this case, a molecule called

choline. “The weird thing is that, for whatever reason, prostate cancer loves to eat choline,” says Kwon. “So there is a very rapid and a high uptake of choline by prostate tumors.” Kwon’s technique involves marking the choline molecule so it lights up under a PET scan. A blood test might reveal that Mr. Hawker’s cancer has returned, but not where to fi nd it. Kwon says “in one fell swoop” it’s changed how quickly doctors can respond to new cancer. “Instead of waiting around for months and losing time,” he says, “we can make very rapid assessments in terms of how effective or ineffective a treatment is.” “When I got here, I had but three or four weeks left to live,” Hawker says. “Right now I’ve got a long horizon again, and I’m living every minute to the fullest.” Information obtained from www.mayoclinic.com

Did You Know? The End of an Era In reviewing the make-up of the newly-convened 114th Congress, the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) notes that there is not a single veteran of World War II sitting in the House of Representatives or in the Senate. Michigan’s John Dingell, who is 88 years old, and 91-year-old Ralph Hall of Texas are the last of the Greatest Generation to serve. Dingell, a Democrat, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 when he turned 18 and rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1955 and holds the distinction of being the longestserving member of Congress. Navy Lieutenant Hall, a Republican, joined up in 1942 and was an aircraft carrier pilot. He was elected to the House

if you are a member of the senior set. For example, British investigators at the University of Southampton found that ballroom dancing helped patients with Parkinson’s Disease become more sure-footed after taking up ballroom dancing. The illness is

prevalent among seniors and so the researchers concluded that it can help even healthy individuals in old age. “Dancing involves turning and stepping to a rhythmical beat from the music, which can help to improve their mobility. The principles behind the dancing - people have to move their feet, turn their bodies and take big steps – were carefully chosen to enhance what clinicians are doing during rehabilitation,” said Professor Ann Ashburn, who headed up the study. The Tango tops the list of dances with benefits, according to other scientists.

scene when the warblers took flight, noting that they were in the process of determining whether the birds could be fitted with tracking devices. It appears that the birds were able to sense the impending disaster in time to escape. In fact, as reported in the scientific journal, Current Biology, “The birds evacuated their breeding territories 24 hours before the arrival of the storm and the atmospheric variation associated with it.” Henry Streby of the University of California, Berkeley was the lead scientist on the scene. He said: “The warblers in our study flew at least 1,500 kilometers total to avoid a severe weather system. They then came right back home after the storm passed.”

Least Productive Congress? Not This One, Barely! It turns out the 113th Congress did not produce the fewest laws since the days of Harry Truman. But it was pretty darn close. Thanks to a late flurry of bill signings by President Barack Obama, the perpetually gridlocked Congress that just adjourned has had 286 bills enacted into law during its two years of work. That’s according to

Bird’s Eye View in 1980 and has held his seat for 17 terms. Veterans’ advocate Seth Lynn, director of the independent Veterans Campaign, said “World War II, as awful as it was, broke down tons of barriers.” Those who served, he said, developed a “camaraderie that lasted for the rest of their lives.” Representative Hall said the bond held firm among members of Congress who served in the Great War. “When we differed on the issues, we respected each other and chose to respectfully disagree. That was part of our military training and experience.”

Dance! It’s Good for You Did you dance up a storm on New Year’s Eve? Good for you. Keep it up because it’s good for you, especially

10 | www.amac.us

Can birds warn of impending disaster? According to a new report, a breeding flock of golden-winged warblers in eastern Tennessee made an extraordinary run for it a day before 84 tornados touched down, ravaging the area. Scientists were on the Congressional Records. The number includes 51 that the White House says Obama signed on December 17th, 2014. The 286 laws barely exceed the 283 enacted by the previous Congress. But both totals are the lowest in Congressional Records dating to the 1940s. And the numbers pale compared to what Truman called the “do-nothing Congress” of 1947 and 1948. It saw more than 900 measures enacted.

Magnets and Cooking – An Attractive Combination! You’ve probably heard the phrase “It’s not rocket science,” and you’ve probably even heard that phrase applied to activities as commonplace as cooking and meal preparation. Traditionally, the core of the cooking process—the use of heat energy— has evolved from the “primitive” days of wood and coal to the “modern” days of electric and gas, with varying opinions of the pros and cons of each. Nowadays, the norm is pretty much either gas or electric, with size and design really being the only variables. So while this part of the cooking process might seem a bit routine and unchanging, you might want to start paying attention to a new technology— induction stovetop cooking—that’s looming on the horizon. Well, maybe looming isn’t actually correct, since it’s been around for a few decades, but like most technologies, its price points have begun to drop to levels where the general marketplace is beginning to view it as a viable alternative. But what is induction cooking, and how does it differ from conventional types? In simple terms, the traditional “burner” is replaced by a powerful high-frequency electromagnet that does not generate heat, but rather makes the molecules of the cooking vessel itself generate the heat that does the job. On the internet, you can find photos of induction cooking in progress, showing ice cubes sitting intact beside a cut-away iron skillet frying an egg. Only the material within the skillet is subject to heat. Cooking time is controlled by regulating the strength of the magnet. On the upside, induction stovetops offer easy installation (stovetops are roughly as thick as the kitchen counter), and they’re relatively easy to keep clean (since the stovetop itself is not heated and not subjected to cooking spillovers). Also, they are reported to be cheaper to operate, and can be installed where gas service doesn’t exist. On the downside, making the jump to an induction stovetop is still relatively expensive, although the prices are coming down.

The real cost of going with this technology is the need to replace your aluminum, glass, Pyrex, or copper cooking vessels with products made with electromagnetic materials. As the technology improves and multiplies, it just may offer you an interesting upgrade to your kitchen arsenal. Keep an eye on it and do your research, though, before you make the move.

Some Fascinating Statistics The website statisticbrain.com is a prolific source of little (and sometimes big) snippets of information that provide answers to questions many of us never even thought to ask. For example, did you know that 1.2 billion watches are sold annually? And that more than three quarters of these are mechanical, while only 23% are electronic. Or did you know that the average price of an item sold at a garage sale in the U.S. is 85 cents? In fact, the 165,000 garage sales conducted each year produce a total revenue of $4.2 million, and the average profit garage sale purchasers make on resales through eBay is 462%. And then there’s the auto industry. Did you know that 65 million cars are produced each year, with 16.7 million of these produced in China compared to the 4.5 million produced in the U.S.? Visit the statisticbrain.com site and

you’ll be amazed at the wide range of little-known statistical information available, all of it un-interpreted, just reported. Of course, this isn’t the type of stuff that keeps you up at night, but knowing little tidbits of minutiae like this can serve you well when you fall into an impromptu trivia contest! ★

exist, the assets will pass to the original IRA owner’s spouse and then to the estate. A decision to disclaim IRA assets must be made within nine months of the original IRA owner’s death and before you take possession of the assets. This is an irrevocable decision. Therefore, it’s critical that you consult a tax adviser or attorney before disclaiming IRA assets. Determine whether you are listed as someone’s benefi ciary. While it may be a sensitive topic to broach with parents, siblings, or others, knowing in advance that you are listed as a beneficiary can help you avoid potentially costly mista kes. As life events such as marriage, divorce, and deaths occur, it’s in your best interest (and the IRA owner’s) to confirm that beneficiary designations are up to date. Remember that IR A beneficiar y designations supersede a will. Commingling of IR As is not permitted. If you inherit different types of IRAs (Roth, traditional, SEP, etc.) from other IRA owners, you cannot combine them into a single inherited IRA. As for commingling IRAs of the same account type, the answer differs based on whether they were inherited from the same original owner or different owners. Consult a tax adviser regarding this situation. Distribution rules will vary for entities such as trusts, estates, or charities. Also, note that the Supreme Court recently ruled that an inherited IRA held by a non-spouse beneficiar y is not exempt from attachment by creditors under the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. While some states have laws that still may protect inherited IR As, for a non-spouse beneficiary living in a state without such laws, the inherited IRA is now treated as any other account owned by the beneficiary for bankruptcy purposes, and may not be protected under bankruptcy from claims by creditors. It is not clear whether and how this decision affects an inherited IRA held by a spousal beneficiary. Beneficiaries should be reminded to speak to their lawyer or tax adviser before taking any distribution from a retirement account or if they have specific questions regarding protection from creditors.

If you decline to accept all or part of the IRA assets you are entitled to, they will pass to the other eligible beneficiaries. If no other beneficiaries

Understanding IRA Inheritance Rules

I

f you are the owner or a beneficiary of an IRA, it is important to understand the rules that govern IRA inheritances and the tax consequences associated with them.

The rationale behind the creation of IRAs was quite simple; however the rules for inheriting and distributing assets upon the death of an IRA owner have become anything but. If IR A owners and their beneficiaries are not careful, they could end up paying higher taxes or penalties and forfeiting the opportunity for future tax-advantaged growth. Here is what you need to know about inheriting IRA assets as a beneficiary: The rules for inheriting IRA assets depend on your relationship to the original IRA owner and the type of IRA owned. There are also two important ages to keep in mind as you mull your options: 70½ and 59½. The IRS requires IRA owners to start taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) no later than April 1 following the year in which they turn 70½. These rules also apply to whoever inherits an IRA. In addition, distributions taken prior to age 59½ (either by the IRA owner or the inheritor) could be subject to a 10% early withdrawal penalty, depending on the type of IRA. Your ultimate course of action will be determined by your age, the age of the IRA owner, your income needs, and the type of IRA you inherit. As a beneficiary, you do not have the option of rolling the assets into your own IRA. If you inherit IRA assets from someone other than your spouse, you generally have two options from which to choose:

1. Transfer the assets to an inherited IRA beneficiary distribution account. When you transfer assets from a traditional IRA into an IRA beneficiary

by John D. Caffrey, CFP 12 | www.amac.us

distribution account (inherited IRA), the rules for RMDs still apply. This means that, regardless of your age, you must withdraw a certain amount of money from your inherited IR A each year, based on your age and life expectancy. Generally, you have until December 31 of the year following the original IRA owner’s death to take your fi rst RMD. Each year thereafter you will be required to take an RMD until the account is depleted or you pass away, at which time the assets will pass to your beneficiaries. The beneficiary’s RMDs will be calculated using your age in the year following your death and based on the Single Life Expectancy table. If the original IR A owner died before reaching age 70½ (before RMDs would be required of the original owner), you also have the option of distributing your inherited IRA under the fi ve-year rule. This allows you to take distributions however you like without penalty, so long as all assets are completely distributed from your inherited IRA by December 31 of the fifth year following the IRA owner’s death. Discuss with your tax adviser the potential tax implications of this accelerated withdrawal. If the original IR A owner died after reaching age 70½, then you must continue to take annual RMDs from your inherited IRA. When you establish an inherited IRA, be sure your IRA custodian registers the account properly. The account registration should include the name of the person who died, an indication that the account is an IR A beneficiar y distribution account, and the inheritor’s name. Note that different IRA custodians may have varying interpretations of the IRS’s rules regarding account registrations.

Retiring?

Review Your Homeowners Insurance for Your Financial Health

A

s you start thinking about and eventually move into retirement, there are many things to consider that relate to one’s personal fi nances. The reality is that your priorities - and your budget - change once you retire. Be sure to take some time to review one important aspect of a personal finance profile - your homeowners insurance. By ensuring your home and its contents are sufficiently protected, you will be more confident moving to the next stage of your life. When reviewing your homeowners insurance policy, two important considerations are appropriate coverage and available discounts. First, review your policy with an insurance representative to help ensure that you are maintaining an appropriate level of coverage. In the event of a loss, you want to make sure you have the coverage needed to rebuild your home. Note, the market value of a house is not a reliable indicator of the amount of insurance you need because the cost to rebuild takes items into consideration such as construction type, raw materials, specialized work needed, and building codes.

If you haven’t already done so, familiarize yourself with the specifics of your policy. Typical components of a Homeowners policy should include: Other structures coverage: This pays for covered damages to detached structures like garages, sheds, fences and cottages on your property. Personal property coverage: This covers your personal belongings - whether in your home or elsewhere, which could include your furniture, clothes, sporting goods and electronics. Loss of use coverage: This pays your additional living expenses if necessary in the event of a covered loss. Liability insurance: Provides protection against your personal liability in the event someone is injured or their property is damaged by you or a family member. Deductible: A deductible is the amount you would pay out of your own pocket before the insurance coverage takes over. The amount you choose for your insurance deductible depends on how much you’re prepared to pay if you have a covered loss. Have you recently purchased a bigticket item, jewelry, or perhaps some art? Think about asking your insurance representative about valuable items coverage, which you may need to ensure these items are protected.

Next, consider how you might be able to save on cost. One way to save time and money is by insuring your homeowners and auto policies with one company. Having all policies with the same insurer means less to remember. Many insurers will give you the option to receive a single bill which is an added convenience. One insurer also means a

single point of claims assistance, making it easier to fi le a claim should something go wrong. Other potential cost savings could include:

✓ “Loss-Free” discounts, which are offered to eligible customers who have not experienced a loss within a specified time period. ✓ Safety devices within the home such as: • Smoke detectors and alarms • Interior sprinkler systems • Home security systems such as deadbolts, alarms and 24-hour security guard ✓ If you’re buying a new home or condo into retirement, a home-buyer discount may be available to customers who have purchased their home within the prior 12 months to the policy effective date. While this insurance coverage is a helpful fi rst step, it provides only some of the basic information needed to start a conversation about managing your risks. Connect with your insurance representative to discuss your specific situation. You may also want to consider a free, no-obligation quote on the coverage you need through the Travelers Auto and Home Insurance Program, especially since members have access to special savings. Learn more at travelers. com/amacadvantage or discuss your insurance needs with a licensed Travelers insurance representative, toll free, at 1-888-892.1234.

2016 Presidential Race

The Race to the White House: 2016 Edition

T

he dust has barely settled after November’s GOP tidal wave of a midterm election, but the 2016 election mania is already setting in. Although none of the perceived frontrunners have formally announced an intent to run, several others have either already declared or are openly flirting with the idea. The media is ablaze with presidential speculation and political insiders and grassroots activists are drawing up the battle lines for what is sure to be a contentious primary season – at least on the Republican side. The Republican primary field is likely to be a lot wider and a little more contentious than the Democratic primary. Jeb Bush, long the favorite choice of the more establishment wing of the Republican Party and its all-important donor base, has risen to

JEB BUSH frontrunner status. The former Florida governor and son and brother of two former presidents still has to overcome the hostility of movement conservatives if he is to win the nomination and have an energized party for the general election. It was an obstacle that Mitt Romney faced in 2012 but was nonetheless able to overcome. Speaking of Mitt Romney, the former nominee and two-time runner just might

be thinking of getting back in the game himself. Although previously adamant against the idea of a third bid, sources close to the former Massachusetts

governor believe he may be changing his tune. Still, despite growing interest in another Romney candidacy, like Webb, Romney must overcome the perception as the candidate of yesteryear, and, like Bush, overcome the disaffection of the base. Still, he’s an already heavily vetted and rehearsed candidate with a solid donor base, so third time really could be the charm. The Republican waves of 2009, 2010 and 2014 have been particularly massive at the state level and have fueled the ascendance of several prominent Republican swing state governors, who are likely presidential candidates. The likeliest of these candidates is Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. Thrice elected governor (he faced an attempted recall in 2012 by union foes) in four years, Walker arguably possesses the most accomplished record of any Republican in the country, certainly of any Republican in a blue or swing state.1 When Walker was fi rst elected in 2010, Wisconsin faced a daunting budget deficit of $3.6 billion. By the end of his first term in office, it had become a $911 million surplus. This is while significantly reducing taxes. Walker’s most famous and most significant achievement has been to curb the

power of his state’s powerful public sector unions by taking away collective bargaining, reforming pensions and implementing merit pay. Walker has also been a champion for school choice in education, a critical issue for

conservatives that has wide appeal because it increases opportunity for the next generation. It would be foolish for anyone to write off Walker. He may not be the frontrunner at the moment, but he has what it takes to emerge as a strong dark horse candidate as the field begins to shrink. With so much talk of factionalism within the GOP, Walker is one of the few candidates who may be able to appeal to the entire party: Tea Party activists, “establishment” donors,

2016 Presidential Race Christie. Christie was on a roll in his fi rst term in office. One of his greatest accomplishments was spearheading significant changes to New Jersey’s pension system for public employees early on in his fi rst term. He withstood heavy protest from New Jersey’s public unions, especially the teachers, but the legislation was ultimately passed by a Democratic legislature and signed into law. His approval skyrocketed by the end of his fi rst term thanks to his handling of Superstorm Sandy and his ability to build a diverse coalition of support despite his famously blunt mannerisms. It looks, however, that “The Guv” has seen better days. Traffic problems in Fort Lee pale in comparison to the Garden State’s budget woes. As a more moderate Republican, Christie, like Jeb and Romney, will have a difficult time winning over the conservative

social conservatives, libertarians and independents alike. We should continue to watch him with great interest. So far, the only governor who has officially announced that he intends to run is former Texas Governor Rick Perry. Perry surged early on in the 2012 presidential campaign but declined after a poor debate performance showed that he was not ready for prime time. He

is vindicated. Perry has a number of qualifications. I can think of three right away. He has nearly a decade and a half of executive experience, he is a proven conservative and… oops, I forgot the third. Unfortunately his big “oops” moment remains the biggest, if not the only thing, that many voters remember about his failed 2012 campaign, and he still has a lot of work to do to regain his former clout as a serious contender. Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana has done a remarkable job in getting his State recovering from the lingering

RICK PERRY by Robert Scoble

claims that this time will be different. Perry faces a felony indictment over a veto he issued in an attempt to force the resignation of a local district attorney, who pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated. The charge, however, is widely acknowledged to be bogus and could even give him a boost once he

BOBBY JINDAL effects of the devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina so he remains a viable candidate. Another governor eying the White House is New Jersey Governor Chris

CHRIS CHRISTIE base. Furthermore, unlike other GOP governors like Walker, he lacks the ability to boast massive achievements and results. A heavily Democratic legislature is partially responsible for this, but the buck nonetheless stops at the top in the eyes of most voters. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is the darling of young libertarian voters and is far more pragmatic and electable than his father. Paul earned his spot at the leadership table last fall by aggressively campaigning for Republican candidates across the country. He boasts an impressive record of building relationships with unlikely allies, whether working with Democratic Senator Cory Booker to reform criminal justice laws or joining forces with the establishment-oriented Chamber of Commerce to help candidates with whom he doesn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of his own libertarian causes. In doing so, he has distinguished himself from other Tea Party leaders and has earned CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

the respect, if not the endorsements, of many of his former ideological foes within the GOP. Senator Rand Paul’s biggest hurdle remains convincing

after he spearheaded the passage of a comprehensive immigration bill in the Senate derided by many Republicans as

Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and neurosurgeon Ben Carson, will both do well with evangelical voters. Unfortunately, their appeal beyond this segment of the party will be slim pickings. Huckabee carries many of the liabilities of both a Tea Party and

MARCO RUBIO RAND PAUL voters that he is not his father. With the rise of ISIS in the Middle East, voters need to be assured that Paul will not neglect America’s international obligations. Senator Paul recently had a very public social media feud with another potential 2016 presidential contender, Florida Senator Marco Rubio. When President Obama moved to normalize relations with Cuba in December, he found a Republican ally in the libertarianminded Paul. Rubio, however, was the President’s sharpest critic. The ensuing debate between Paul and Rubio couldn’t be more symbolic of the heated foreign policy battle raging within the GOP between the Party’s libertarian faction, led by Paul, who advocates for more diplomatic and economic engagement combined with less military intervention and economic sanctioning of our foes, and its traditional proponents of American leadership via a more muscular foreign policy. Rubio competes with fellow Floridian Jeb Bush for the Sunshine State’s prized swing votes. As a Cuban American, Rubio has greater ability to connect to Hispanic voters than most of his fellow presidential hopefuls. As a son of refugees from Castro’s regime, he is well-equipped to make the case for the necessity of American leadership in dealing with Cuba and other hostile nations, as was seen in his recent spat with Paul. Yet although a Tea Party favorite during his 2010 ascendance, Rubio’s support among conservatives waned in 2013

an amnesty bill. Since losing that fight, however, Rubio has worked diligently to repair his image among conservatives. Many Tea Party activists remain hopeful of a Ted Cruz nomination. Glenn Beck continues to promote him as the best hope for conservatives. Senator Cruz rose to fame – or infamy, depending on whether you are a “Whacko Bird” or a “RINO,” during

TED CRUZ his 2013 ObamaCare showdown that resulted in a government shutdown that many still blame on him. His defiance of Republican leaders has earned him both the scorn of party pragmatists and the praise of many grassroots conservatives. The portion of movement conservatives who are more socially conservative or prefer a more aggressive foreign policy will find in Cruz a more agreeable choice than Paul, while most of the more libertarian-minded conservatives will flock to the latter. Electability will still be a major concern of primary voters when evaluating Cruz and may cause many would-be supporters to instead opt for someone like Walker or Paul. Two of the earliest candidates to announce intention to run, former

an “establishment” candidate with few of the benefits of either. At a time when Republican pragmatists foresee a need to expand the tent when it comes to positions on social issues, Huckabee is known more than anything else for being a hard-liner on divisive issues such as gay marriage. At the same time, however, he often comes under fire from conservatives for not being steadfast enough on economic issues. These handicaps give him very little room to expand his appeal either to Tea Party affi liated voters or to the donor class. Carson, meanwhile, is largely unknown and owes his political clout chiefly to a single speech. Unlike other more established candidates, he has yet to be

fully vetted as a candidate. Furthermore, while sending the virtuous political outsider to clean up Washington is CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

a long-cherished ideal of American populists (see, for instance, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), sending someone with no political experience to the highest office in the land isn’t. Voters who admire Dr. Carson’s principles will likely try to seek out a more experienced standard bearer who shares those same principles. Another likely “also-ran” is former Pennsylvania Senator and 2012 runner-up Rick Santorum, who last month announced that he too is eying another run for the White House. Should he choose to run, Santorum

RICK SANTORUM by Gage Skidmore

will be in a similar situation as Huckabee. Santorum, like Huckabee, is a social conservative hard-liner and an economic populist running in a party that is becoming increasingly socially moderate and fiscally conservative. Santorum came close in 2012, but with so many other candidates ascending into prominence, he is unlikely to come as far this time around. The list of prospective Democratic candidates is far shorter than its Republican alternative. A decisive majority of Democrats are coalescing around Hillary Clinton. She appears to be her party’s consensus candidate and is a surefire favorite for the nomination. Even so, it’s already becoming clear that while the Democratic primary may be a cake walk, it won’t be a coronation. Only one candidate has formally announced an exploratory committee on the Democratic side and – surprise – it isn’t Hillary, but former Virginia Senator Jim Webb. Webb announced his presidential aspirations in a low-tech webcast video in late November, garnering little media attention. As the National Journal wrote at the time of his announcement, Webb represents the Democratic candidate of

22 | www.amac.us

yesteryear, appealing to the Democratic voters of yesteryear. 2 The one-time Virginia Senator and former Secretary of the Navy under President Reagan prides himself in his ability to work across the aisle and seek common ground in a party that appears much less willing to do so than in the days of Tip O’Neil or Bill Clinton. Webb is a candidate whose primary appeal would come from blue collar, working class whites – historically the cornerstone of the Democratic coalition but now only an afterthought – responding in-kind in recent elections to the perceived abandonment. Whereas Webb attempts to challenge Hillary from her right, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren could pose a more significant, yet still probably futile, threat to her from the left. Although she has repeatedly said she isn’t running, liberal groups are urging her to do so. MoveOn.Org has started a petition to demonstrate their support.3 A Democratic primary featuring both Webb and Warren will showcase eviscerating criticism of Clinton from both sides, greatly weakening her for the general election in the same way that Mitt Romney was hindered by his many primary opponents in 2012. Should one of them manage to win the nomination, either in a stunning upset or an equally stunning decision by Clinton not to run, they would have to overcome a great lack of name recognition in the case of Webb and a great deal of controversy in the case of Warren.

record here, as Secretary of State, is dismal. Benghazi, the “Russian reset” and the rise of ISIS aren’t going to win her any accolades on foreign policy. Hillary has already shown that she isn’t going to be the type of consensusbuilding candidate that Bill was. Her rhetoric on the campaign trail is closer to that of Obama and Warren. At a recent event, she told a crowd of supporters that corporations don’t create jobs. Class warfare, while appealing to the Democratic base, will not win her middle America. If Hillary does not start singing a different tune soon (“Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” is a good recommendation), then Obama fatigue will add to the already latent Hillary fatigue. While the Democrats have a decisive frontrunner for their nomination at the moment, the GOP field is wide open. It is very likely that some of the names on this list may ultimately choose not to run. It is even more likely that others not mentioned will throw their hats into the race. It is a long road to nomination. This is not necessarily a flaw for the Republican Party, though. As an ideologically diverse party that champions individual freedom as one of its core tenets, it is fitting that the GOP would offer a broad range of options for voters and engage itself in healthy, spirited debate from time to time. The path to sustainable victory for the Party, however, is to rise above pitting one faction against another and to rally behind candidates who can unite Republicans, while simultaneously rallying independents under its banner. Division has often been a tool that the Left has used for its own gain. To provide a stark contrast with the Democratic Party, Republicans must be the party that brings people together.

HILLARY CLINTON Any bets taken on the Democratic nomination should be on Hillary Clinton. The election, however, is another story. While her role in her husband’s presidency could enable her to run a nostalgic campaign contrasting today’s polarization with her husband’s bipartisan achievements, this opportunity is thwarted by her role in the Obama Administration. Her

Social Security

AMAC Leads the Charge on Social Security

I

n the wake of November’s midterm elections, Capitol Hill has undergone a significant political transformation that has changed the face of Congress. This newfound identity will likely have a profound, positive impact on AMAC’s ability to advance its legislative priorities and to raise awareness for the prevailing issues of importance to mature Americans and seniors. Social Security and its long-term financial sustainability have long been of chief concern to AMAC members. For this reason, AMAC crafted a plan to ensure Social Security’s solvency, seeking the input and approval from AMAC members along the way. AMAC’s plan – the Social Security Guarantee – accomplishes several important objectives. First, we project it will make Social Security solvent, or able to pay benefits owed, for 80 years once implemented. Most importantly, it does this without raising taxes, a fundamental requirement of AMAC members. By adjusting COLA rates based on income levels, increasing the age of retirement and modifying the Primary Insurance

Amount, AMAC is able to secure the program for future generations of beneficiaries. Moreover, AMAC recognizes that Social Security was never intended to be the sole source of income for retirees. To help workers save more of their own money over the course of their careers without privatizing the program, AMAC added a voluntary, taxdeductible Early Retirement Account (ERA) to compliment the other major components of the Social Security Guarantee. Workers who contribute to an ERA – which cannot be accessed until age 62, or upon death or total disability – would have a true lockbox of money on which they could rely during retirement. AMAC’s Social Security Guarantee has been presented in more than 200 Republican and Democratic congressional offices over the last two years and has been met with modest approval. Often, AMAC’s meetings have served an educational purpose, as we have found it necessary to explain the current financial strain on the program and demonstrate the repercussions that inaction by Congress will have on the 50+ demographic. While AMAC’s outreach has been widespread, it has also been targeted. On numerous occasions, AMAC has met with the Members and professional staff of the House Ways and Means Committee, including the Subcommittee on Social Security, as well as the Senate Finance Committee and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Strong relationships with Members who sit on committees of jurisdiction are critical to AMAC’s ability to positively influence the legislative process on this issue. Meetings and conversations have even extended into the private sector where AMAC has sought input and support from the business community, think tanks and other associations.

Conversations about the future of Social Security with all of these groups, including elected leaders, have been productive and insightful, but they have yet to produce real action. The legislative process – designed intentionally by the founding fathers to be slow and difficult – has been particularly rigid since 2010. With a new Congress now positioned to lead the country in a different direction, however, the stage is set for a revitalized effort to make Social Security a key priority in the 114th Congress. AMAC stands ready to play its part! Kicking off a busy first quarter in Washington, AMAC plans to meet with top lawmakers with authority to set the agenda for the next two years. AMAC will also strive to make personal introductions to the incoming freshmen Members, who will need to be brought up-to-speed on our advocacy positions and goals. Our efforts at the beginning of 2015 will build toward a signature event in March on Capitol Hill. AMAC will

Functioning much like a roundtable discussion, Stephen Moore, Chief Economist at the Heritage Foundation, will serve as the moderator, helping to provoke a realistic and meaningful dialogue that lays the groundwork for congressional action on Social Security. Though the window to act responsibly and in a way that will benefit seniors becomes increasingly more difficult the longer Congress chooses to kick the can down the road, hard numbers and the astronomical growth in mandatory federal spending only help to reinforce AMAC’s advocacy message. The most recent elections revealed that Americans are sick and tired of out-of-control government spending, and Social Security payouts are the driving force behind increased

spending. The latest report issued by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) revealed that in Fiscal Year 2014 alone, spending on Social Security totaled $840 billion, nearly one-quarter of all federal spending.1 AMAC understands that this spending level is not just unsustainable, but it is detrimental to the economy as a whole. Commitment to AMAC’s cause, principles and mission is essential to effecting policy change in Washington. AMAC looks forward to engaging with the new Congress to enact legislation that will improve the lives of mature Americans and seniors, while helping to provide younger Americans with certainty as they prepare for retirement. With the support of our 1.2 million members, AMAC believes our voice in the nation’s capital will be heard. ★ 1

Retirement

Retirement Living... Choosing the Right Destination for You

P

lanning for retirement is a process that has multiple dimensions, beginning of course with taking the right steps to build the financial framework you’ll need to live comfortably. Then there’s the matter of maintaining your health so that you can get the most – physically - out of those leisure years. While these are arguably the two most important steps in the process, there’s a third leg to this stool that tends to require a matching level of thought: where to spend your “golden years.” Selecting a retirement destination is not an easy or quick step to take. Clearly, the task requires a considerable amount of research and careful planning, accompanied by the review of a mindboggling supply of “helpful” articles and blogs presenting suggestions on the ideal place for you and your spouse to re-root yourselves. Just pick up any popular magazine or news service publication and you’ll encounter someone’s opinion on “the best places to retire.” Unfortunately, these are just opinions developed and weighted based on a slate of metrics or parameters that may or may not fit your individual situation.

Getting started So, what’s the best way to approach this task? Just like any major project in life, it’s

by Gerry Hafer 30 | www.amac.us

a good idea to start by carefully defining what you’re looking for in a retirement locale. It sounds simple, but it’s really pretty complex, especially considering that relocating can be a major ordeal for many people, and considering that it tends to get more and more traumatic the older we get. This process of carefully defining your situation will likely focus on a variety of topics, including: ■ Climate - Do you want to be in an area where the seasons are clearly defined (like the Upper Midwest), or would you prefer year-round beach weather (like South Florida or Southern California)? Or would your ideal climate be an area where the extremes of winter and summer are more moderate (like the Coastal Mid-Atlantic states)? ■ Family and friends – Is it important to you to be able to be in relatively close proximity to your loved ones? Or can you deal with a lengthy trip to visit? ■ Health needs – Does the area you’re considering have the quality and quantity of health care services you’re likely to need throughout your retirement years? ■ Cost of living – Are your retirement assets adequate for the area? In other words, what’s the general cost of living compared to what you’re accustomed to? Don’t forget to factor in such items as state and local income taxes and sales taxes, property taxes, etc.

■ Real estate values – If you plan on being a homeowner in retirement, are property values in the area rising or declining? Even if you do not plan on continuing to be a homeowner, remember that real estate values tend to drive prices in other housing segments, so this tends to be an important consideration. ■ Job and activity opportunities – If you’re planning on working in retirement, either as a pastime or out of necessity, what does the labor market look like for the type of work you want to do? If you’re planning on seeking entertainment or hobby-type activities during your retirement, does the area offer enough in the way of outlets for your energy? ■ Transportation systems – While it may not be critical to you during the early years of your retirement, the availability of public transportation can become a fundamental requirement

Are you sure you want to pull up stakes?

in later years. Does the area offer an adequate transportation infrastructure that will meet your needs? ■ Culture – What level of social interaction are you seeking? Will you be able to adapt to the local customs in a way that will facilitate your becoming a part of the local culture without undue stress or difficulty? ■ Crime and security – Are you comfortable with published crime statistics for the area you’re considering? Likewise, does the area have reasonable security provisions, like police protection and emergency services? Channeling your thought processes through a set of topics like these - and others that serve to define your specific personal situation - will help you narrow your choices, and will give you a much clearer perspective on what’s ideal for you as you plan for retirement.

There’s one big step you should consider before going through the process just described, and that’s the step of determining if you really want to relocate at all. If you’re leaning this way, you might be surprised to learn that you’re not alone… not by a long shot! In fact, a recent Kiplinger article titled “The Benefits of Aging in Place” reports that “almost 90% of people over 65 want to live in their home and community as long as possible” and that “80% believe they will stay in their home until they die.” 1 Under this scenario, a growing number of seniors are opting to remain in their family homes, living on their own and eventually living with some form of in-home assistance. Some take this approach for financial reasons, while others simply do not care to give up the familiarity of the home they’ve lived in for so many years. No matter the reason, it’s clearly a concept that appeals to an increasingly large segment of our country’s maturing population. Local governments and policymakers have begun to embrace this concept as a viable option for seniors, spurred in part by the inevitability of future citizens opting to remain right where they are. The 2010 United States Census reports, for example, that the age 60+ population in our country will reach a level of nearly 74 million households by 2020,2 an increase fueled by the Baby Boomer wave. With the number of mature adults selecting “aging in place” over geographic relocation, communities are ramping up to change the ways that they serve their constituents. Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) are one emerging trend attributed to the “aging in place” movement. NORCs are in essence a village-based concept in which private agencies, residents, and neighborhood associations band together to provide support to the seniors living in their area. NORCs aggregate services (like transportation, home repair and

maintenance, health care and social services) and make them available to residents at relatively low cost. The result is substantial convenience to seniors as they live out their lives in the comfort of the homes and communities they’re most familiar with. Home-sharing is another gradually emerging alternative for seniors preferring to age in place. In this simple concept, homeowners offer accommodation to homesharers in exchange for an agreement to divide household expenses and household maintenance tasks. Like NORCs, shared living arrangements offer attractive options to seniors, and have spawned organizations and resource centers designed to assist individual homeowners and communities in establishing programs and clearinghouses for residents.

Best places to retire No matter what route you plan to take - relocation or aging in place - there is no shortage of opinion about the most attractive or desirable destinations.

As mentioned earlier in this article, of course, the published lists are simply conclusions based on parameters that may or may not be reflective of your situation. Nevertheless, they do tend to be interesting, and they do provide CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

fascinating insights into many areas of the country. If there’s a problem with this type of information, it’s most likely one of overload, since an internet search on any given day will give you dozens of lists to consider. Given the proliferation of opinions about the “best” places to consider, we’ve elected to stay silent on our opinion of the “best” place for those who wish to relocate, opting instead to do a simple analysis of what the multitude of experts, specialists, and professionals have to say. To do this, we executed a quick internet search on the term “best places to retire,” and were quickly rewarded with more than 20 lists, and that was only five browser pages into the search. The authors of the lists we examined ranged from news services like U.S. News and World Report, Forbes, and Bankrate. com, to topically focused sources like livability.com, great retirementspots.com, and bestplaces.net, and even included general web content sites like msn. com and Huffingtonpost.com. The lists we looked at each weighed the merits of locations based on a varying set of criteria, from income levels to the desire

for warm weather, from broad variations in available recreation opportunities to physical safety and security, from tax implications to post-retirement job opportunities, and quite a few in between. From these diverse lists, we developed a simple roster of the most frequentlycited retirement destinations, and the results tracked pretty much along expected lines, with the states of Texas, Florida and Arizona placing in the top three. Since most pre-retirees typically tend to think “sun and sand” and “beach” when contemplating spending their post-retirement years, the state-level results were not surprising (although California only wound up tied for fifth). The city-level results, though, produced somewhat of an unexpected result, with Pennsylvania’s “Steel City,” Pittsburgh, garnering the most individual nominations as the place to go. Tied for second at the city level were four cities comprising a wide geographical swath across the country. They included Boise, Idaho; Bellingham, Washington; Austin, Texas; and Augusta, Georgia. The “Deep South” wasn’t represented until the 18-way tie for sixth place,

Perhaps Forbes put it best with a statement in their “Best Places” study: “Of course, no nationwide list can take into account your own personal considerations such as wanting to stay near friends and family.” And, as we pointed out earlier in this article, the lists that appear regularly in the media suggesting retirement destinations are simply the results of a set of criteria that are not individualized to you in any way. By all accounts, it’s your decision, and it’s got to be based on your situation, your

needs, and your family dynamic. Whatever you decide, remember that your retirement years will hopefully be a major segment of your life, a segment where peace and comfort are likely to be your ultimate objective.

Hollywood Conservatives

Courageous Conservatives in Hollywood M

usica l pop-sta r a nd former Destiny’s Child singer Beyoncé Knowles and her rapper husband Jay Z are well-known in Hollywood circuits. They are equally recognized in Washington as friends of the Obamas. In 2009, Beyoncé performed at the president’s inaugural ball and at his swearing-in ceremony in 2013. The couple has also hosted fundraisers for the President. It’s no big secret that they support liberal values. They are not shy to tweet out their beliefs and to stand with controversial Al Sharpton on his emotionally charged calls for racial justice. After the “not guilty” verdict for Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case, Beyoncé asked for a moment of silence during her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour Concert in Nashville, Tennessee. She also took to her Instagram account to share her disappointment on the outcome of the Ferguson case with her 21 million followers. Mass media is as quick as a thirsty cat lapping water to praise Beyoncé for her political expressions through her use of social media and beyond. Increasingly, the press is joining Hollywood in rallying behind the beliefs of popular liberals. Meanwhile, conservatives in support of their own principles are increasingly coming under fire. Let’s examine 8 Hollywood conservatives whose personal beliefs were chastised by the Goliath liberaldriven media.

by D. J. Wilson 34 | www.amac.us

Standing up to Double Standards Clint Eastwood Age 84 - American actor, director, producer, musician and politician. East wood has received multiple awa rds a nd nom i nat ions wh ich include Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awa rds, People’s C hoice Awards and Directors Guild of America Awards. His most recent accomplishment is his direction of the blockbuster hit American Sniper. The movie, starring actor Bradley Cooper, opened with an historic $107 million over the three day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The biographical war drama film tells the story of Chris Kyle, a Nav y SEAL sniper and deadliest marksman in U.S. Military histor y. Under East wood’s direction, the movie is an honest portrayal of a man who saved countless lives on the battlefield. W hile critics are blasting American Sniper as pro-war propaganda, Eastwood engages the audience to recognize the complexity of the issues of war and its overall

effects. His desire to stand up to liberal Holly wood to share Kyle’s story proves that Eastwood can’t be pushed around. Eastwood is divorced with 7 children. He runs his own production company and ser ved as mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea in California from 1986 to 1988. When he won the election, President Ronald Reagan telephoned him and quipped “W hat’s an actor who once appeared with a monkey in a movie doing in politics?” In general, Eastwood’s main alliance with conservatives is his belief in less governmental interference in the sectors of private economy and in the private lives of individuals. He identifies himself less as a Republican and more as an Independent. When Eastwood appeared at the 2012 Republican National Convention as Romney’s surprise speaker, he was raked across the coals by the media who characterized his presentation as “rambling” and ridiculed his speech to an empty chair. While the press and some Holly wood individuals had a field day

Tom Selleck Age 69 - American actor and film producer best known for his role as private investigator Thomas Magnum in the television series Magnum, P.I.

poking fun at Eastwood, his points were not lost on conservatives who loved his speech and totally agreed that 23 million unemployed people in the nation was an absolute national disgrace under President Obama.

He appeared in movies such as Three Men and a Baby and in the popular television show Friends and he is currently starring in the hit television show Blue Bloods. Selleck has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has won awards including Golden Apple, People’s Choice, Golden Globe awards and an Emmy. The actor is married to long-time spouse and actress Jillie Mack and has one daughter. In political terms, it is suggested that he regards himself as a libertarian. As a longtime supporter of gun rights and the NRA, he made headlines when he was confrontationally challenged by Rosie O’Donnell on her daytime talk show in 1999. Despite O’Donnell’s discourteous interruptions, Selleck defended his civil liberty rights and pointed out the need for a pro-responsible society. The interview left Selleck little time to promote his movie, which was the reason for his appearance on her talk show. Most believe the awkward exchange and negative reaction which followed led to Selleck’s desire to keep his personal views out of the limelight. Selleck says “It’s not that conservatives don’t care. We do. We just have different answers than liberals do. It’s a difference of the mind, not of the heart.”

Candace Cameron Bure Age 38 – American actress, model, producer, director and author.

Tom Selleck

She is best known for her role as D.J. Tanner on the ABC television series Full House, a part she played from ages 10 to 18. In 2014, she was a 3rd place contestant on Dancing with the Stars. She starred in Hallmark Channel Movies and penned a book entitled Reshaping It All on how to make better choices. Candace has been happily married to former NHL player Valeri Bure since 1996 and they are raising three children. She became a Christian in her 20s and credits her faith for the strength in her marriage. Last year she came under fi re for using the word “submis-

Candace Cameron Bure sive” to describe her role in her marital relationship. The word comes from the Bible and her use of it was not intended to carry negative and harmful connotations. Based on her religious values, she simply wants her husband to lead. Meanwhile, the media took her comments out of context and generated a fi restorm of controversy. She is frequently still misunderstood.

Jim Bob Duggar Age 49 – American real estate agent, politician and television personality on the reality series 19 Kids and Counting. He is a former state legislator who served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. He married Michelle Ruark in 1984. They are raising 19 children and in recent years have become grandparents. He and his family are Independent Baptist Christians and apply a Christian perspective to everyday living. The family has taken an uncompromising stance on topics such as marriage, abstinence and pro-life. The Duggars have voiced their religious beliefs defi ning the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman. This created a media backlash and caused the homosexual lobby to launch an anger-filled petition asking TLC to cancel the top-rated show. Continued on Page 36

Continued from Page 35 Unwavering in his religious values, Jim Bob replied with the following comment, “We love everybody, but we don’t always have to agree with them.” A counter-petition was started by Christians and fans to encourage TLC to continue airing the show.

Janine Turner Age 52 - American actress, producer, director, author, Conservative radio talk show host. She is best known for her roles as Maggie O’Connell in the 90s television series Northern Exposure. More recent acting roles include her performance as Dr. Dana Stowe on Strong Medicine and an 8 episode run on Friday Night Lights. Despite some high profile romances, she has never been married and is raising one daughter. Turner and her daughter began an organization called Constituting America to educate all ages on the U.S. Constitution. As founder and cochair of the organization, she hopes to share with adults and students the importance of our freedom and our rights. On the radio, she openly expresses that her strong political views have likely hurt her career as an actress to a certain extent. Turner claims there are instances which have cost her jobs in Hollywood due to her vocal conservatism. Despite this, she remains true to her traditional values.

Janine Turner

Janine’s most recent book is a memoir entitled “A Little Bit Vulnerable - On Hollywood, God, Sobriety & Politics”. She opens up about her private life, her heartbreaks and triumphs, and shares why she’s called to preserve American principles.

Stacey Dash Age 47 - American actress best known for her role in the 1995 feature film Clueless and television spinoff. She appeared in music videos for Carl Thomas and Kanye West. In 2014, she became a Fox News Contributor for “cultural analysis and commentary.” Dash, who has been through a series of tumultuous relationships, is currently divorced and is raising two children. In her early life, she describes a rough upbringing as the child of drug addicted parents. She was influenced positively by her 6th grade teacher and quickly learned the value of education. In 2012, Dash tweeted an endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Many of her followers on Twitter responded with racial insults and criticism, with some suggesting she commit suicide. Dash tells it like she sees it. She openly criticized Jay-Z and Beyoncé for their 2013 trip to Cuba. She asked her Twitter fans if they “care that The Jay Zs have taken the capital you have given them and funded a communist oppressive regime?” Dash received recent criticism from Ebony (magazine) in a statement which read “Her conservative, clueless political slant sparked controversy time after time this year, making Dash notoriously trendy for all the wrong reasons.” She replied with “If being a Fox News contributor and standing up for what I believe in is wrong, then I will be wrong all day long.” Her public expression of conservative views, fueled by her strong opinions and disenchantment with Obama’s policies, has led to the loss of support of some friends and even close

Stacey Dash family members. One of Dash’s strongest claims is that Democrats have a “plantation mentality” in thinking they can buy the minority vote in exchange for social and welfare services. Her main message is calling the “disenfranchised and the uniformed” to become educated and to think for themselves.

Phil Robertson Age 68 - American professional hunter, businessman (Duck Commander), and best known as a reality television star on the popular television series Duck Dynasty. He is also featured on television’s Buck Commander, a hunting show on the outdoor channel. He is devout Christian and is married with four children. Robertson experienced problems in his young adult life due to drinking; however he was able to overcome life’s obstacles through his faith. Robertson is outspoken on his beliefs. A&E announced Robertson’s suspension from the network after a controversial Continued on Page 38

Continued from Page 36 GQ interview where he shared his beliefs on sin, and he started with homosexual behavior. He also defined what is sinful as “Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.” Robertson stated that he does not judge anyone, but leaves that up to God. He is quoted as saying “We just love ‘em, give ‘em the good news about Jesus - whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ‘em out later, you see what I’m saying.” A&E relented on the suspension in response to the strong backlash of supporters, including 1.5 million Facebook likes and statements from political figures. Sarah Palin was one to voice her opinion, calling the suspension an attack on freedom of speech. Louisiana’s Gov. Bobby Jindal made the following statement: “Phil Robertson and his family are great citizens of the state of Louisiana. The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints, except those they disagree with.” While Jindal admits to not always agreeing with stuff he reads in magazine interviews and on TV, he states that “...this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express

their views.” He later goes on to say “It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.” How’s that for American double-standards?

Kirk Cameron Age 44 - American actor best known for his television role as Mike Seaver on the television situation comedy Growing Pains. He starred in the Christian fi lm series Left Behind and Fireproof. In addition to acting, he is a producer. The devout Christian is married to actress Chelsea Noble and has 6 children. Cameron faced controversy for comments he made regarding his personal views on homosexuality and for his use of the word “unnatural.” In a 2012 interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan, Cameron candidly answered questions reflecting his personal convictions formed by his faith. His traditional religious views on same-sex relationships, widely unpopular with liberals, became a target for the news media. While hatred was never suggested by Cameron, in an appearance on the Today Show in 2012, host Ann Curry questioned “Are you

encouraging people to feel hate towards gay people?” Cameron replied “Absolutely not...I love all people, I hate no one.” Cameron later explains that the quote was “edited down” and that it “...certainly didn’t reflect my full heart on the matter.” Curry still pointedly asked “Do you feel any responsibility saying words like that, that might encourage people to feel that it’s okay to treat - mistreat gay people?” Kirk responded with “Nobody should mistreat anyone...” Despite a barrage of negative comments from the left and efforts to defame him, Cameron remains true to his convictions as a respectful Bible-believing Christian. These Holly wood conservatives, whether you agree or disagree with their points of view, have the right to express what they believe. It is wholly unfair of the biased media and for Hollywood to punish those whose thinking does not align with the liberal agenda. Their twisting of words, putting forth false accusations of hatred, and continual attacks on conservatives for personal and Biblical views demonstrates an intolerance of freedom of speech. It’s time for this to stop.

We’ve all had nights when we just can’t lie down in bed and sleep, whether it’s from heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – it could be a variety of reasons. Those are the nights we’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in, one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises feet and legs to precisely the desired level, supports the head and shoulders properly, operates easily even in the dead of night, and sends a hopeful sleeper right off to dreamland.

Sit up, lie down — and anywhere in between!

Breakthrough technology converts phone calls to captions.

New amplified phone lets you hear AND see the conversation. The Captioning Telephone converts phone conversations to easy-to-read captions for individuals with hearing loss.

A simple idea… made possible with sophisticated technology. If you have trouble understanding a call, the Captioning Telephone can change your life. During a phone call the words spoken to you appear on the phone’s screen – similar to closed captioning on TV. So when you make or receive a call, the words spoken to you are not only amplified by the phone, but scroll across the phone so you can listen while reading everything that’s said to you. Each call is routed through a call center, where computer technology – aided by a live representative – generates immediate voice-to-text translations. The captioning is real-time, accurate and readable. Your conversation is private and the captioning service doesn’t cost you a penny. Captioned Telephone Service (CTS) is regulated and funded by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is designed exclusively for individuals with hearing loss. In order to use CTS in your home, you must have standard telephone service and high-speed Internet

connectivity where the phone will be used. Callers do not need special equipment or a captioning phone in order to speak with you.

Hello grand ma this is kaitlynn ho w are you today I wa nted to tell you tha nk you for the birth day card

Finally… a phone you can use again. The Captioning Telephone is also packed with features to help make phone calls easier. The keypad has large, easy to use buttons.

“For years I avoided phone calls because I couldn’t understand the caller… now I don’t miss a thing!”

SEE what you’ve been missing! You get adjustable volume amplification along with the ability to save captions for review later. It even has an answering machine that provides you with the captions of each message. See for yourself with our exclusive home trial. Try the Captioning Telephone in your own home and if

you are not completely amazed, simply return it within 60-days for a refund of the product purchase price. It even comes with a 5-year warranty.

Do you get discouraged when you hear your telephone ring? Do you avoid using your phone because hearing difficulties make it hard to understand the person on the other end of the line? For many Americans the telephone conversation – once an important part of everyday life – has become a thing of the past. Because they can’t understand what is said to them on the phone, they’re often cut off from friends, family, doctors and caregivers. Now, thanks to innovative technology there is finally a better way.

College Fjord boasts the world’s largest collection of tidewater glaciers, aptly named after colleges. This unique site offers visitors a chance to observe nature in action. Enjoy scenic cruising past dramatic backdrops of massive rivers of ice tumbling down from steep hillsides towards the water. Disembark in the gateway town of Whittier, situated at the head of Passage Canal. The quaint fishing town is located 65 miles southeast of Anchorage and was established as a World War II port. Affordable New Digital Hearing Aid Outperforms Expensive Competitors Delivers Crystal - Clear Natural Sound Reported by J. Page

Chicago: Board-certified physician Dr. S. Cherukuri has done it once again with his newest invention of a medical grade ALL DIGITAL affordable hearing aid. This new digital hearing aid is packed with all the features of $3,000 competitors at a mere fraction of the cost. Now, most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear, natural sound — in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind — without suffering through “whistling” and annoying background noise.

New Digital Hearing Aid Outperforms Expensive Competitors This sleek, lightweight, fully programmed hearing aid is the outgrowth of the digital revolution that is changing our world. While demand for “all things digital” caused most prices to plunge (consider DVD players and computers, which originally sold for thousands of dollars and today can be purchased at a fraction of that price), yet the cost of a digital medical hearing aid remained out of reach. Dr. Cherukuri knew that many of his patients would benefit but couldn’t afford the expense of these new digital hearing aids. Generally they are not covered by Medicare and most private health insurance. The doctor evaluated all the high priced digital hearing aids on the market, broke them down to their base components, and then created his own affordable version — called the MDHearingAid®AIR for its virtually invisible, lightweight appearance.

King Solomon’s Secret Treasure: FOUND Ancient beauty trapped in mines for centuries is finally released and available to the public!

K

ing Solomon was one of the wealthiest rulers of the ancient world. His vast empire included hoards of gold, priceless gemstones and rare works of art. For centuries, fortune hunters and historians dedicated their lives to the search for his fabled mines and lost treasure. But as it turns out, those mines hid a prize more beautiful and exotic than any precious metal: chrysocolla. Prized by the wisest king of the Bible. Known as the “Wisdom Stone,” chrysocolla was considered a powerful talisman of healing and calming energy. Ancient rulers of the Biblical era relied on it for guidance and now this legendary treasure can be yours with our stunning Earth & Sea Chrysocolla Necklace. Call today to bring home 325 carats for ONLY $49! Nothing like it on Earth. The mesmerizing swirls of color in chrysocolla come from a unique combination of elements found in the rich mineral deposits of copper mines. When miners find a vein of blue-green, all digging stops so that the delicate chrysocolla can be extracted by hand. Masterpieces of natural art. Our Earth & Sea Chrysocolla Necklace features a strand of polished, enhanced chrysocolla ovals—and silver-colored beads—that meet at a gorgeous teardrop pendant. Every chrysocolla is unique, showcasing a canvas painted by Mother Nature herself. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. Wear the Earth & Sea Chrysocolla Necklace for a few weeks. If you aren’t convinced that it’s one of nature’s most elegant creations, simply send it back within 60 days for a full refund of your purchase price. Get Crackin! Cooking with eggs

E

ggs are simple, delicious and versatile enough to bind together a humble meatball, give loft to a rich soufflé or add silky smoothness to a classic hollandaise sauce. Eggs are nutritious, readily available, affordable and infinitely adaptable to every meal of the day, from the breakfast omelet, to the lunch sandwich, to the dinner pasta.

■ There is no difference in taste, texture or nutritional value between brow n and white chicken eggs. The color is determined by the breed. Breeds with white feathers and white ear lobes lay white eggs; chickens with red feathers and red ear lobes lay brown eggs. ■ W hen buy i ng eg gs, choose those that are clean and unbroken. Store them in their original carton, on an inside shelf of the refrigerator, away from foods with strong odors. ■ If any eggs are stuck to the carton, wet the box and the eggs will become easy to remove without breaking. ■ Eggs can be used for about 30 days after the sell-by date. To determine if an egg is fresh, place it in a bowl of water. If it lies on its side, it is very fresh. If it tilts on an angle, it is approximately 3 – 4 days old. If it stands upright, it is probably about 10 days old. If the egg floats to the top, it is no longer any good and should be thrown away. ■ Egg whites can be frozen for up to one year. Place them in a container as you collect them; then thaw for use in meringues and angel food cakes. 7 – 8 egg whites equal 1 cup. ■ To easily separate a yolk from the white, crack the egg into your hand and gently let the white fall through your fingers into a bowl below. 54 | www.amac.us

Eggs are one of the world’s most favored and indispensable foods.

■ If a piece of the shell gets into your eggs, don’t chase it around the bowl. Use the perfect tool - one of the broken halves of the eggshell. It will behave like a magnet, and make it easier to remove the pesky bit. ■

To peel a hard-boiled egg: gently roll the cooled egg on a counter or cutting board until it is covered with cracks. Carefully remove the shell, running the egg under cold water if the shell sticks. Fresh

eggs are harder to peel, so let the eggs sit in the refrigerator for a few days, or even a couple of weeks, before hard-boiling them.

■ Wiping up a broken egg can be difficult. Sprinkling salt over the mess will make cleaning up it a little easier.

Kathie’s Kitchen How to Cook Eggs

Quiche Lorraine ❏ 1 – 9 inch pie shell ❏ 1 Tbs. butter – softened ❏ 12 bacon slices – cooked and crumbled ❏ 4 large eggs

❏ 2 cups heavy cream ❏ ¾ tsp. salt ❏ 1⁄8 tsp. nutmeg ❏ 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese

Spread butter evenly over the bottom and sides of pie crust. Chill well. Preheat oven to 425°. With a whisk, beat together eggs, heavy cream, salt and nutmeg. Stir in cheese. Place crumbled bacon in chilled crust. Pour egg mixture over bacon. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 325°. Continue baking for an additional 35 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let sit for 10 minutes. Serves 6.

❏ 3 large eggs – lightly beaten ❏ 4 cups cooked long grain rice ❏ ½ lb. cooked shrimp ❏ ¼ cup soy sauce

Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir fry onions, garlic, peas and carrots until tender. Set aside. Add eggs to the empty skillet and scramble. Add rice, and toss with egg until well combined. Return sautéed vegetables to the pan, along with shrimp and soy sauce. Heat through. Serves 4.

Chicken Francese ❏ 2 large eggs ❏ ¾ tsp. salt ❏ ½ tsp. pepper ❏ 2⁄ 3 cup olive oil ❏ 1 ½ lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts – pounded to ½ inch

Place desired number of eggs into a saucepan and add cold water to cover by 1 inch. Bring to a boil over high heat. Remove saucepan from heat and cover with lid. Let stand for 17 minutes. Pour out hot water and replace with cold water. Drain and refill with cold water. Let stand until eggs are cool - about 20 minutes.

Soft Boiled: Place desired number of eggs into a saucepan and add cold water to cover by 1 inch. Bring to a boil over high heat. Remove saucepan from heat and cover with lid. Let stand for 4 minutes. Pour out the hot water. Cool to the touch. Carefully remove egg from shell, or serve in an egg cup.

Better-Than-Takeout Fried Rice ❏ 3 Tbs. sesame oil ❏ 1 onion – chopped ❏ 2 cloves garlic - minced ❏ 1 cup frozen peas & carrots

Hard Boiled:

Poached: Add water to a skillet to a depth of 1 ½ – 2 inches. Add 2 Tbs. white vinegar. Crack each egg into a small bowl or cup. Bring water to a boil, reduce temperature, and allow water to reach a gentle simmer. Gently transfer eggs into the simmering water. Poach for 3 minutes, spooning simmering water over the eggs periodically. Remove from the pan when the whites are opaque and feel firm to the touch. Dry on paper towels.

Scrambled: ❏ ½ cup flour ❏ 6 Tbs. butter ❏ ½ cup white wine ❏ 3 large lemons – juiced ❏ 1 cup chicken stock ❏ 2 Tbs. chopped parsley

Whisk together eggs, salt and pepper. Set aside. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Dredge chicken in fl our, shaking off excess. Dip chicken into egg mixture. Place in skillet and sauté until golden on both sides, about 4 minutes. Remove from skillet, and drain on paper towels.

Whisk together 3 large eggs, a pinch of salt, 1 grind of black pepper and 3 tablespoons milk until light and foamy. Melt 1 tablespoon butter over mediumhigh heat in a 10 – 12 inch nonstick skillet. Pour the eggs into the middle of the pan. Stir slowly with a rubber spatula. As soon as big soft lumps begin to form, drop the heat to low and fold the curds over on themselves while gently shaking the pan with the other hand until no liquid remains.

Remove skillet from heat, and carefully wipe out pan. Return to heat. Melt butter in skillet. Add wine and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, and cook for 3-4 minutes or until slightly thickened. Add chicken broth, bring to a boil and cook until reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Place chicken in sauce, turning to coat, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes, or until heated through. Transfer to a serving platter. Sprinkle with parsley. Serves 6.

Former CIA Official Warns:

ISIS Terrorists Could Cripple America’s Electric Grid! How will you keep your family safe when the power goes out? And it WILL go out. Weather is the other enemy. Even leaving aside a terror attack, there is the constant threat that Mother Nature could strike a vicious blow to the grid. Last year’s Polar Vortex is a perfect example. Only through a massive effort by grid operators were we spared total blackouts across large parts of the country. In a recent interview, former CIA official Dr. Peter Pry, warned, “There is an imminent threat from ISIS to the national electric grid and not just to a single U.S. city.”

It’s happened before and we know it will happen again. We also know the vast majority of Americans are totally unprepared for the deprivation and lawlessness that often follow.

Pry explained that attacks on just nine of the nation’s 55,000 electrical substations could result in coast-to-coast blackouts for up to 18 months.

Introducing the Patriot Power Generator 1500.

It may have already begun.

It’s no secret ISIS and other radical groups hate America. Their mission is to destroy us by whatever means possible. A successful attack on the grid would definitely bring about the end of the world as we know it.

The Patriot Power Generator 1500 is an affordable, completely selfcontained system that silently provides up to 3,000 peak watts of totally FREE, renewable power. And it’s so easy to use a child can do it. 1. Unfold and set up the solar panel in the sunlight.

3. Now plug in your electronic devices and enjoy free power from the sun!

What could be a more frightening thought than that?

You know we’re targeted.

There are no moving parts!

1

2. Plug in the solar panel.

Frank Gaffney, founder and president of the Center for Security Policy in Washington went even further. “…should the power go out and stay out for over a year, nine out of 10 Americans would likely perish.”

On April 16 last year, snipers fired on an electrical substation in San Jose. Shooting for 19 minutes, they managed to knock out 17 giant transformers that provide power as far away as Silicon Valley. It took workers 27 days to restore the facility. No arrests were made.

freezer… fire up your slow cooker, your toaster oven, even your coffee maker… power your cell phones, computers, radios, medical devices… and so much more. You can even use it to power an electric blanket to keep you warm.

The Patriot Power Generator 1500 was designed to help you continue to meet your power needs. And best of all, it harnesses the power of the sun to keep a state-of-the-art lithium ion battery charged. Unlike other generators, you’ll never run out of gas. You’ll have a power supply that you can recharge endlessly. And at just 27 pounds you can take the Patriot Power Generator 1500 with you if you are forced out of your home. You’ll have an ample supply of AC electricity available to power your

Amazingly, it takes just 3.5 hours or less to fully charge the unit. And it will hold its charge for up to 6 months so it’s always ready to use.

French Quarter Festival… Musical Magnet That Attracts Music Lovers From Around the World

A

s the saying goes, “music makes the world go round,” and on April 9-12, 2015 it will stop and focus on a weekend of world-class music at New Orleans French Quarter Festival. This gala event is mixed with famous and culinary masterpieces, and surrounded by the buildings that reek of multi-cultural history dating back to the 15th century and the swashbuckling days of the Pirate Jean Lafitte. Since its inception in 1984, the Festival has grown to become the largest free music festival in the country, last year drawing 770,000 music fans. More than 120 musical groups with over 800 local musicians are scheduled to present their unique musical genres on 21 stages throughout the French Quarter. Whatever your musical preference, you’ll find bands playing traditional and contemporary jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, Cajun/Zydeco, New Orleans Funk, swing, rock, international and even classical. These are sounds that are part of this city’s unique and rich cultural gumbo. While the 2015 band schedule will not be released until February, several of the 2014 Festival bands should be returning, such as Trombone Shorty, Meschiya Lake & The Little Big Horns, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Tim Laughlin,

Charmaine Neville, The Dukes of Dixieland, Banu Gibson & The New Orleans Hot Jazz, Preservation HallStars and the Lena Prima Band that is also scheduled at the Carousel Lounge at the Monteleone Hotel, which is the Festival headquarters. By the way, while you’re roaming the streets of the French Quarter, check out the corner of St. Peter and Royal where the “Queen Clarinet,” Doreen Ketchens, and her Band are usually surrounded by a group of music lovers. This is a performer who has played for presidents, kings, and queens. Arrive early, map out your weekend strateg y and start by joining the revelers on Bourbon Street for the opening 10 am Festival parade on Thursday. Then find your way over to Woldenberg Riverfront Park, the Absolut Louis-Louis Pavilion Stage and Capital One Bank Riverside Legacy Stage for the 11 am opening acts that perform until 7 pm. On Friday you can switch to Jackson Square, French Market, Dutch Alley, Preservation Hall, Louisiana State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint, House of Blues and 300 Bourbon St. Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. While on Bourbon St., take a few photos at Musical Legends Park of the sculptures of New Orleans’ musical greats. Festival music continues until 9 pm; then it’s on to one of the many jazz clubs presenting a menu of jazz music until the wee hours!

New Orleans

by Frank Grace

On Saturday and Sunday, musical groups will be performing on several new stages. There’s sure to be more than one group that will have you tappin’ and clappin’ . Did you say you were hungr y? Not at the French Quarter Festival. A number of New Orleans’ 5-star restaurants have created a food and beverage presentation know n as “The World’s Largest Jazz Brunch”

at Jackson Square, the Louisiana State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint and Woldenberg Riverfront Park. Sample jambalaya, blackened catfish, crawfish etouffee, Cajun meat pies or delectable gumbos. Sixty food and beverage booths will be scattered t hroughout t he historic French Quarter. This is a presentation of food featuring everything from various forms of crawfish to Po-Boys to Crème Brulee, priced from $3 to $5. You’re also in the neighborhood of some world-famous restaurants, such as Antoine’s, Brennan’s, Galatoire’s, Arnaud’s and the Court of Two Sisters, to name a few. Then there’s a myriad of special events that are in the category of “don’t miss them” — free tours of hidden patios and gardens of French Quarter homes, a Pirate’s Alley art show, the world’s largest praline, and spectacular fireworks on the Mississippi River to end the evenings — that is after a traditional stop at the Café du Monde for café au lait and beignets. If you haven’t already moved the 2015 French Quarter Festival to the top of your “bucket list,” what’s holding you back? For additional Festival information, call 800.673.5725 within the U.S. or 504.522.5730, or visit www.fqfi. org in February for the Festival band schedule. ★

Joke of the Month Having just moved into his new office, a pompous, new Colonel was sitting at his desk when an airman knocked on the door. Conscious of his new position, the Colonel quickly picked up the phone, told the airman to enter, then said into the phone, “Yes, General, I’ll be seeing him this afternoon and I’ll pass along your message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir.” Feeling as though he had sufficiently impressed the young enlisted man, he asked, “What do you want?” “Nothing important, sir,” the airman replied, “I’m just here to hook-up your telephone.” Heard any good ones lately? Send them in!

Please submit your joke by emailing info@amac.us or mailing to Joke of the Month, c/o AMAC 5 Orville Drive, Suite 400, Bohemia, NY 11716. Your joke may be featured in our next magazine!

AMAC at work for you

AMAC in Action Find out how AMAC is standing up for you, every day AMAC Hosts 2015 Delegate Conference

On January 18-20, 2015, AMAC hosted its inaugural Delegate Conference at the majestic Waterfront Inn, the Villages, Florida. The event included a series of educational seminars, training sessions, and networking forums to better equip our Delegates to serve in their Congressional districts. In addition to these events, Delegates had the opportunity to interact with fellow Delegates from across the country and enjoy a visit to Grand Oaks Resort & Museum. Conference Topics included: “Issues of Interest”: A thorough overview of the political issues that will likely be addressed in the 114th Congress. “Saving Social Security”: An in-depth review of AMAC’s Social Security Guarantee and how to present it to lawmakers. “A Look into the Reagan White House”: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and principal speechwriter for Ronald Reagan, Anthony R. Dolan, shared his thoughts on Reagan, conservatism, and AMAC’s grassroots movement.

Fraud Protection, Investor Behavior Focus of AMAC Foundation Presentation Subtitled “No Free Lunch,” the nonprofit AMAC Foundation seminar on “Fraud Protection and Investor Behavior” was presented as a public service. Over one hundred attendees filled the Pinellas Public Library conference room to capacity to hear retired financial expert, Rich Miles’ spirited presentation. Many seniors receive dozens of “free dinner” or “free lunch” invitations each year from firms who claim they have the best answers for retirement planning. Many are ethical firms who provide

64 | www.amac.us

valuable information and services. But how does one know whom to trust with their life savings? When the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) surveyed 110 such American firms’ programs in 2007, virtually 100% of them had hidden sales agendas for their financial products or services. Further, the SEC found 59% had weak supervisory management practices; 50% used exaggerated or misleading advertising claims; 23% recommended investments which were likely unsuitable for their senior clients’ best interests and 13% were ‘just plain fraudulent.’

AMAC Supports: Hire More Heroes Act AMAC supported its first piece of legislation of the 114th Congress. Last week, the House of Representatives passed the “Hire More Heroes Act,” a measure aimed to offer businesses relief from ObamaCare and to support American veterans in the workplace. This bill would make it easier for veterans to be hired by removing the possible penalty employers would face by having veterans counted as “fulltime” employees for the purposes of determining whether an employer is considered a “large employer” under ObamaCare. Currently, if a company employs 50 or more full-time employees, working 30 or more hours a week, then that company must provide health coverage to its workers – often at a tremendous cost to the employer. However, by excluding veterans who have their own health plans from being counted toward the 50-employee limit, businesses can be exempted from the ObamaCare employer mandate and penalties. AMAC strongly supports this bill, which will undoubtedly help small businesses working to create jobs and unemployed veterans searching for work. We expect the Senate to swiftly pass this bill and send it to President Obama’s desk.

AMAC Supports: “Protect Medical Innovation Act” and “Medical Device Access and Innovation Protection Act” AMAC recently declared support for two bills that seek to repeal ObamaCare’s medical device tax. Representative Erik Paulsen (R-MN-03) introduced the “Protect Medical Innovation Act,” and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT ) introduced the “Medical Device Access and Innovation Protection Act.” Both bills intend to protect consumers and businesses alike by repealing the onerous medical device tax, which has proven disastrous across-the-board. According to a study by the Advanced Medical Technology Association, the tax negatively impacted 33,000 American jobs in its first year. If passed, these bills would strike the 2.3% excise tax on medical devices, which would allow for lower health care costs, increased job creation, and greater technical innovation – all which stand to benefit mature Americans, seniors, and patients in need. AMAC believes repealing this tax is a step in the right direction in the overcoming the negative impacts of ObamaCare.

AMAC Attends CPAC 2015 AMAC attends CPAC 2015 – The 42nd annual Conservative Political Action Conference, America’s largest gathering of conservative activists and conservative leaders, February 25 – February 28, in Washington, DC. Every year, the ACU brings thousands of grassroots conservatives and conservative leaders together in Washington, DC for three days of blockbuster speeches, policy discussions and networking opportunities – all celebrating the shared principles of smaller government, a strong national defense and traditional values. Attendees gather to hear from the nation’s most courageous conservative leaders and help set the conservative agenda for the coming year to rally support against the big-government policies destroying America. ★
