away from achieving her goal. To put it in a nutshell, Boudicca was a courageous, passionate and inspiring Queen, she was one of the many people that stood up against injustice and is now remembered as a heroine. HAIDER RAZA Abhia 2nde 2 Marwa 2nde 3

During the Roman invasion of Britain, the Queen of the Iceni, Boudicca, fought against the Romans after her husband’s death. She was in fact, a native English woman who led a national rebellion that almost threw the Romans out of Britain. This very rebellion was extremely serious leading to brutality. Though she was savage, the fact that she stood up against injustice is important. Indeed, she is known for being inspiring and a reason to be proud to be British. She was also a heroine for early feminists as she was herself a woman who came up as a leader and she was an inspiration to other strong women down the ages. Moreover, she has been viewed as an icon of national resistance. The impact and influence of her acts can be seen through a statue of her that still remains close to the Houses of Parliaments on Westminster Bridge in London. Furthermore, the woman is thought to have poisoned herself rather than be taken prisoner. This proves that she was passionate about defeating the Romans instead of stepping backwards and giving up. Unfortunately, she was one battle 1

Boudicca is still remembered and considered by many as a hero because she stood up against injustice, she successfully led her people and fought bravely against a brutal aggressor, even if she was a woman.
As a matter of fact, she showed the Romans that a woman could be strong, determined, brave and leaders of men. The Roman society was very male dominated, women had little say in politics or business.
Other people are against the fact that she was a hero because she killed many people with no mercy, was brutal and cause her fight against the Romans was personal.

By Eliza and Timeo Boudicca, from the derived Celtic word «victory» was born in a aristocratic family, she was of noble birth, where she learned to fight.
Dio, a Roman writer, described her as she was tall with a long red hair, with a striking appearance, she was wealthy and also intelligent and liked to wear jowellery.
Boudicca is still remembered nowadays, because she led an aggressive revolt against the romans who violated her and her daughters, she secretly plotted her revenge with the Iceni and Trinovantes . The governor, thinking that what he had left was a submissive and docile people, was away and fighting in north-western Wales. Boudicca and her followers chose their time well, in effect the Romans were shocked and surprised by the uprising and its size.

And you, do you consider her as a heroine ?

She led the Celts to several victories against the Romans, her warriors successfully defeated the Roman Ninth Legion and destroyed the capital of Roman Britain, Camuldonum. They also went to destroy other cities, like Londinium and Verulamium (London and Verulamium nowadays). Tacitus, a roman historian and senator said that the Britons had no interest in selling or taking prisonners, only in slaughter by 2

The famous Boudicca

Boudica was Queen of the Iceni during the early Roman occupation of Britain. After , when her husband Prasutagus died and left half of his property and lands to their two daughters, and the other half to Rome, the Romans didn't respect his will and took control of all the land and possessions. The Roman procurator for the area was Decianus, he decided that all of Prasutagus estate and those of the other Iceni leaders should now belong to Rome and the Romans , so he seized the property by force. Boudicca was outraged but , instead of listening to her complente , the soldiers dragged her outside and flogged her publicly , to shame her. At her secrets meeting between the tribes , they decided on a revolt against the Romans presents and appointed Boudicca as their leader. Boudicca and her army swarmed through the town , destroying everything and everyone in their path. They then lay siege to the temple and destroyed it within two days , massacring everyone inside and then setting fire to the town. The Romans slaughtered everything in their path : Soldiers , women , children. It is said that 80 000 Britons died that day , with the lost of only 400 Roman soldiers. The Roman victory of the Britons remained a province of their empire for 350 years.

Boudicca was the Queen of Iceni (AD 1st century). After the death of her husband, the King, the Romans decided to take all of the Iceni’s estates. Boudicca resisted: the Romans flogged her and raped her daughters publicly. She rose up against the Romans with her followers. She attacked Camulodunum (Colchester), Londinium (London) and Verulamium : she put the cities to fire and the sword. One day, the Roman Seutonius Paulinus provoked the Queen on a small hill which was a handicap for Boudicca. Her army, which was ten times higher than the Romans, was destroyed by them. We think Boudicca and her daughters escaped and they poisoned themselves to avoid being caught by the Romans. Boudicca is an example for women because she succeeded to lead an army and a kingdom like a man, like a King. At this time, the women were considered lower than men but Boudicca was rebel, obstinate and determined. She is also famous for her violence towards the Romans. She was a Queen with a lot of pride and who was defending her honor.

Boudicca, a reason to be proud to be British

Then they dragged Boudicca outside. She couldn't accept this that's why she went from a noble queen to the Roman Empire's deadliest ennemy. She decided to led the Iceni and other tribe against the Roman invaders. Around 60 AD, they targeted and razed Colchester which was the most important site in Britain for the Roman at the time. They went to destroy anything touched by the Romans.

Boudicca is from Royal descent. She was tall with masses of tawny hair cascading down to her hips. She is described as looking fierce with a harsh voice and also described as being unusually intelligent.

Yet today she's immortalised as one of Britain's first heroic patriots.

She is the wife of the king of the Iceni tribe, Prasutagus and they had two daughters. After Boudica’s wedding with Prasutagus, she had gotten a good education as a noble family. The education was all in womanly arts and she also received a training in military strategy and weaponry.

During the romanisation, the Romans make trades with the different tribes except the Iceni tribes who doesn’t want the items from the Romans which made bad effect on their way of life, but they had good relations with the Romans. After the death of Prasutagus, in his will the kingdom was split between his daughters but the Romans decided that all the estate and those of the other iceni leaders should now 4

After the death of the king, Decanius decided that all of Prasutagus' estate and those of the other Iceni leaders should now belong to Rome and the Romans. Boudicca was outraged and later, the soldiers dragged her outside and flogged her publicly, to shame her, and then raped her young daughters, to dishonor them. At a secret meeting between the tribes, they decided on a revolt against the Roman presence and appointed Boudicca as their leader. The rebels decided that Camulodunum was to be their first target, it was a centre of great resentment and poorly defended. The rebels swarmed through the town, destroying everything and everyone in their path. They then lay siege to the temple and destroyed it within two days, massacring everyone inside and then setting fire to the town.

Boudicca was of royal descent, she was born in Britain. Her husband, Prasutagus, was the King of the Icenians, a people who lived in the area corresponding roughly to the modernday county of Norfolk. Prasutagus, the king of Iceni and Boudicca married and they had two daughters and continued to enjoy the lifestyle of wealthy nobility, mainly undisturbed by the Roman overlords.

Boudicca is still considered as a heroine today thanks to this victory at Camulodunum. After the defeat of the conquest of London, it is believed that Boudicca and her daughters escaped and may well have taken poison to prevent themselves being captured and taken to Rome as prisoners.

Boudicca had a masses of tawny hair cascading down to her hips, her look was fierce, her voice is harsh et she was intelligente. She is likely to have had training in military strategy and weaponry. She became queen when her husband, Prasutagus died in 60 AD.

ones, belonged to Rome and Romans, and so to him too. He send roman tax collectors and soldiers to size the property by force, and even took slaves. They also flogged Bouidca publicly and raped her two daughters, to humiliate them. As the surviving Icenys fled, they planed a revenge. They allied with the Trinovantes, a tribe from the south whos capital, Camulodum, was occupied by the Romans, and agreed that Boudica would be their leader. This is a very important and unusual thing at the time, because a woman had no place in the society to be a leader and even less on the military scene.

Boudica lived in the I century and was of royal descent. Though we don’t know much about her early life, the information we have about her starts from when she is already married to Prasutagus, king of the Icenians people who would correspond to the Norfolk nowadays, and had two daughters. As a princess and then queen, she is likely to have received education in what they call woman arts, but also in training in military strategy and weaponry. First of all, the story begins with the invasion of Britain of Julius Caesar in 55 and 54 B.C. As he left, he made a treaty with British tribes so they would have good relation and to trade with them. But that wasn't the case of the Iceny tribe who didn't want any links with the Romans. However, when in 43 AD the emperor Claudius invaded England, the Iceny tribe didn't resist and made an agreement with the romans which pemited them to keep their king, Prasutagus, their own money and way of life as long as they stayed friendly with the romans. In this way, they lived peacefuly and got wealthier. When Prasutagus died, his will was to give half of his estate to the roman emperor Nero and the second half to his daughters so they could continue to enjoy their wealthy life after his death. But the Roman procurator of the area said that all of the Iceny's estates, including Prasutagus's

Their first target was Camulodum: as most of the Roman army was away fighting in north Wales trying to destroy the Druids and the rebel strongholds, the city was badly defended and an important city. The rebels invaded the city and destroyed the temple ( built with the taxes the romans recolted ) where the Romans hid. They put the city to fire and killed many civilians. Meanwhile, a Roman division was heading to the city to free it from the siege, but it met the victorius rebels lead by Boudica. The Romans got overwhelmed by them and their leader, Petilius Cerialis, and his cavalery managed to esape. The rebels were now heading to Londinium, but as they heard of the Britons rebelion, the leader of the romans in north Wales came back with his cavalery. Realizing that the scale of the rebelion was much bigger than he thought and that Londinium wouln't be easily defended with his small forces, Seutonius Paulinus orded to 6

all the Romans nearby to join him. Though many civilians fled the town as Boudicas army was approching, some of them stayed, and got killed. They then went to raid Verulamium, in the north, and turned the city to ashes too. It is believed that 80 000 men, woman and children died during these raids. At that point, Seutonius had reached to 10 000 men in his army and decided to setle on a hill in the Midlands to have the advantage of the field. Though the romans were outnumbered 10 times, there tactical discipline and the fact that they were better armed than the Britons abled them to win after a day of battle. It is said that 80 000 Britons died that day for only 400 Romans. It is believed that Boudica and her to daughters managed to flee, and would of took poison to prevent themselves from being captured by the romans.

Today, Boudica is still remembered and even has its statue near the Houses of Parliament. She is the symbol of National resistances against the invader, though she killed a lot of Britons too during her raids and her fight against the Romans was for a personal reason. Her name means Victory and it is believed that Queen Victoria the first was named after her. Her story, told by the Roman writter Tacitus, has been an ispiration for other stong women throughout the centuries.

Boudica: Heroine of the Past or Bloodthirsty Warrior?

Yet ,when, she led her army to revolt against the Romans, it was at the first time that a woman led on an army, which was really bold at the time but also shows her charisma. To put it in a nutshell, Boudica is remembered today as a symbol or resistance against the oppressor, for her integrity ,her tenacity and her being a good and strong leaders. But as with all heroines, we tend to forget her flaws.

We still remember Boudica nowadays, although, she lived twenty centuries ago. First of all, let us introduce Boudica : she was born into an aristocratic family ; she was of royal descent and her husband was the King of the Icenians. But Boudica wasn’t famous for this.

By Lilian and Théo

Boudica had all the qualities of a heroine : she was often described as brave and courageous.Indeed she fought against a brutal aggressor who mistreated her household. Moreover in 55BC, when Julius Cesar invaded Britain, Boudica couldn’t tolerate to see her authority challenged. And she fought for her freedom against a greedy invader since the Romans took all lands from her tribe to give to Roman settlers. A situation the Iceni found utterly unfair .

To finish she stood up against injustice by forcing the Romans to respect the treaty, they had made with her husband to treat the Iceni as allies, not ennemies totake advantage of . On the other hand, Boudica is also depicted as a brutal and merciless leader who did not hesitate to raze towns and slaughter their inhabitants. Some also say that she fought against the Romans only to seek revenge for looting her home and abusing her. 8

landmark in British history In fact she was of Royal descent so she was meant to become a queen. She got married with Prasagatus(king of Icenians) and had two daughters.

When the Romans came to the Iceni Royal household, she was wiped and her daughters were raped. Many of her follower were outraged by their treatment by the Romans.

By AD 43 the Roman Emperor Claudius invaded England and things changed. Boudica’s family and other tribes had to trade their country. They put up little resistance including the Iceni (so Boudica’s family).

After this, Bodicca plotted her revenge with the Iceni and Trinovantes secretly (she took the Roman invader by surprise!).

In AD 60 King Prasagatus died. Decianus decided that all of Prasagatus estate and those of the other Iceni leaders should now belong to Rome and the Romans. Boudica was outraged but, instead of listening to her complaints, the soldiers dragged her outside and flogged her publicly, to shame her, and then raped her young daughters, to dishonour them. After that Boudica plotted her revenge with the Iceni and Trinovantes in secret.

She is still remembered today because of this story. She is also still remember today because of her courage. Indeed, she was a freedom fighter against a greedy invader, and an icon of National Resistance. She showed the Romans that a woman could be strong, brave, determined and leader of men in a Roman society where the woman had littleto say in politics or business, and where the society was male- dominated.

She is also known because she led the Celts to several victories against the Romans and especially because she showed the Romans that women could be strong, brave, determined and leader of men (in fact at this time Roman society was male dominated, women had little say in politics or business.) And above all her actions were a source of inspiration to other strong women down the ages.

The Memory of Boudicca

Boudicca was married to Prasutagus, ruler of the Iceni people of East Anglia. When the Romans conquered southern England in AD 43, they allowed Prasutagus to continue to rule. However, when Prasutagus died the Romans decided to rule the Iceni directly and confiscated the property of the leading tribesmen. They are also said to have stripped and flogged Boudicca and raped her daughters. These actions exacerbated widespread resentment at Roman rule.

After all of these years, Boudicca is still in our memory, and will stay an heroine in the eyes of ours children. Boudicca was a Royal descendent. She was a queen and had two daughters. After AD 43, she reigned with her husband Prasutagus (king of the Incenians). She lived around the modern-day county of Norfolk. She continued to reign after Prasutagus’ death, since AD 60. She never shunned her enemies. She kept her honor even after being outraged and looked for help and never found it. She had a fierce look with a harsh voice. The queen was “very intelligent for a woman”. She raised a rebellion army, became the leader. She led to

In 60 or 61 AD, while the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paullinus was leading a campaign in North Wales, the Iceni rebelled. Members of other tribes joined them. Boudicca's warriors successfully defeated the Roman Ninth Legion and destroyed the capital of Roman Britain, then at Colchester. They went on to destroy London and Verulamium (St Albans). Thousands were killed. Finally, Boudicca was defeated by a Roman army led by Paulinus. Many Britons were killed and Boudicca is thought to have poisoned herself to avoid capture. The site of the battle, and of Boudicca's death, are unknown. She’s still seen as a heroine today because she was a brave warrior, a blue-faced Celtic superwoman and a feminist icon 10

victory during a lot of battles, with also many tragic casualties. But after all these battles, Seutonius, a governor, chose to fight Boudicca's army on a hillside, to disadvantage them. Boudicca’s army was vanquished. It is said that 80 000 Britons died and only 400 Roman soldiers died in that day. In AD 61, Boudicca and her daughters killed themselves for never to be captured again and keeptheir honor.

Nowadays Boudicca is known as the heroin who fought courageously against the romans who invaded Britain. Actually, the story of this woman started when for the first time when the Romans invaded Britain in 55 BC with Julius Caesar. They didn't invade completely Britain however they began make treaty with some Celtic tribes. The Iceni didn't want to do anything with them.

It is the reason why she still in our memories. She was strong, strategic, a warrior, a savior. Thanks to her, the the Britons defended their values. Boudicca is the symbol of honor, hope, power and courage. This fierce war marks the history.

Afterwards in 43 AD the Romans invaded Britain completely with the emperor Claudius and the Iceni were defeated. During this period of invasion Prasutagus became the king of the iceni and he married Boudicca. He had two daughters with her.

BERRABAH Chayma and FAUVIN Lisa

In the year 60 AD, Prasutagus died and it was the beginning of tensions because the Roman procurator Decianus decided that the lands and the goods became romans as Prasutagus’ will were not valid. Boudicca protest against that however to dare this protestation he abused of Boudicca’s daughters in front of her ! That was the fact which made Boudicca furious and which was the beginning of the Iceni revolt. This revolt was terrible, bloody, and very violent. They were massacres of Roman cities like verulamium and camulodunum. Queen Boudicca was really angry, furious and savage!

That’s why Boudicca is still remember today. She is an icon of national resistance. She also prove that a women can be strong, brave and a leader!

The Heroic Boudica

Oualid Iliana &Benni Assia

Boudica lived inthe first century AD ; she was born in 30 AD and died in 61. She was married to Prasutagos, the king of Iceni and they had two daughters. This marriage with the king of Iceni may have been part of things that made her famous. During a secret meeting, she was named the leader of the revolt because after her husband’s death a man said the goods were not for her but for the Romans. After this her and her daughters were humiliated, they went to other cities and Boudica began thinking about her revenge. Even if it was a woman she fought for her beliefs and it shows what is heroic. However, Boudica set fire to the town and around 80000 people died in Londinium, Verulamium and Colchester. Moreover, she received an education in all womanly art because she was noble but she also likely to have had training in military strategy and weaponry. So we remember Boudica for these criminal acts, her violence and not for her heroism
