MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Aloha everyone, We were very fortunate in July that Tropical Depression Flossie’s impact was not as bad as originally predicted by the National Weather Service. Although we had more than 9,700 homes without power, numerous trees and poles down and some incredibly powerful ground strike lightning, we got lucky because it could have been much worse.

Welcome to hurricane season! We are in a very interesting weather pattern with a lot of activity brewing in the Pacific and making its way across the ocean towards Hawaii. Let’s be mindful and ensure we are prepared.

Before Flossie arrived, I had heard some rumblings out there in the community about how we gave county workers the day off for nothing and that we were over-reacting. We made that decision for many good reasons, all of them related to the well-being of our entire community. I’d like to share some of those decisions here today: To allow non-essential county workers time to prepare for the oncoming storm and be with their families when it hit.

To remove our county workers from potentially deadly situations. One example is the fact that our DMVL office at Maui Mall has a lot of glass windows, which could be dangerous if high winds picked up debris and sent it flying everywhere.

To lessen the impact on the community. Imagine 2000 plus county workers at the end of the day rushing to get back home at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, before the storm hit? I think we would have seen more traffic accidents if we had done that.

As it turns out, it was the right call. Hawaii County, the state and the City and County of Honolulu all made the same call eventually. There is a difference between being panicked and being prepared and I thank all of our county workers for helping us to do the latter.

Our highways division worked hard to clear culverts to prevent flooding. Our parks crews went from beachpark to beachpark to get campers out of there in case of high surf. Our Civil Defense staff convinced the state that they should open up schools as shelters, out of the same concern that the glass windows at some of our community centers along with high winds just weren’t a good mix.

Our police and fire crews responded quickly to emergencies and our road crews got debris cleared as fast as they could. Overall I am very proud of our county workers, in their preparation and in their execution of their duties once the storm was actually here.

And just remember, Hurricane Season isn’t over yet. Keep an eye on the news and restock your emergency supplies because as we have proven to the rest of the state, it helps to be prepared.

BETTER CHOICES BETTER HEALTH WORKSHOP The Maui County Office on Aging will sponsor a six-week “Better Choices Better Health” workshop series beginning Wednesday, August 14, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the West Maui Senior Center located at 788 Pauoa Street in Lahaina.

The course is designed to help people living with chronic conditions better self-manage their health.

The course will run on six Wednesdays: August 14, 21, 28 and September 4, 11 and 18.

Cost of the workshop is $10 for those 60 and older, and $30 for those under 60. The course fee includes the text book, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” and a relaxation CD. The County of Maui is soliciting proposals for tourism programs on Maui, Molokai and Lanai for calendar year 2014 under the County

Product Enrichment Program (CPEP).

Supported through the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA), the intent of the program is to diversify and enrich Hawai`i’s tourism product by developing new and enhancing existing community-based events, experiences, and projects related to the niches of agriculture, culture, education, nature, health and wellness, sports and technology.

Examples of programs supported during year 2013 include: Maui Open Studios art tours; the annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival; Ka`anapali Fresh - a culinary event taking place during the weekend of August 30, and next month’s Pailolo Challenge Canoe Race from Maui to Molokai. Ongoing activities feature the Hawaiian Music Series of free monthly concerts at the Baldwin Museum and community Theater on the Isle attractions at the historic Iao Theater.

FACEBOOK PHOTO CONTEST TO CAPTURE HEART OF GIVING The County of Maui, Volunteer Center & HandsOn Maui Program is excited to start their first ever Face book Photo Contest! Our desire is to have all people on Maui, visitors and locals alike, to get their cameras out and get involved.

We are looking for pictures that capture LOVE, GIVING, SERVICE, SHARING, INSPIRATION, KINDNESS through volunteer service. We leave the artistry up to your personal interpretation.

Mauians meet Philippines President Aquino, other key leaders

Mayor Alan Arakawa led a delegation from Maui County at the 8th Ambassadors, Consuls General and Tourism Directors Tour to Philippines last month. Others who joined the trip include Maui County Council Chair Gladys Baisa and her husband Sherman, Councilmembers Don Couch and Don Guzman, Sharon Zalsos representing the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce and Lynn Araki-Regan, Publisher of The High Street Journal.

“We had a very productive time in the Philippines and made great connections with their local government,” said Mayor Arakawa. “I am happy to return to Maui though, because the weather at that time was really warm.”

The delegation stayed at a hotel in the heart of Ortigas Center in Pasig City surrounded by skyscrapers and malls.

The Ambassadors Tour is an annual event put together by the Philippine Department of Tourism tapping on various consulates in the U.S. and Canada. The Maui County group joined the delegation of more than a hundred participants from Hawaii, led by Philippine Consul General Julius Torres.

The week-long trip started with a ferry-ride to the island of Corregidor. This island played an important role during World War II and now has become a popular visitor destination. Ruins from the war remain on the site and the popular Malinta Tunnel, said to be the last stronghold of the Philippine and American military, offered a dramatic audio-visual presentation in remembrance of our fallen heroes.

Mrs. Imelda Marcos is a current District Representative in Ilocos Norte. Daughter Imee Marcos is the current Congresswoman of Ilocos Norte, region where most immigrants to Hawaii are from.

A Friendship City Agreement was ceremoniously signed between Maui County and the municipality of San Juan, Metro Manila led by Mayor Guia G. Gomez. San Juan is known for its Water festival, in commemoration of St. John the Baptist, where locals and visitors enjoy a parade of dances and floats.

The Planning Department is very pleased to announce that on July 1, 2013 John Rapacz has joined the Department as a Planning Program Administrator for the Zoning Administration and Enforcement Division.

Parks & Recreation Dept conducts Moloka`i Skate Jam

On Friday, July 12, Moloka’i Parks and Recreation staff conducted a youth Skate Jam. There were 235 kids that participated in the skate jam event. Due to the large amount of participants, Parks staff teamed up with PALS staff, Alu Like summer workers and the Moloka’i Youth Center to accommodate all participants.

Participants were able to enjoy a day of activities at the skate park, Kaunakakai ballfield, gym and the swimming pool. Groups participated in activities at the different facilities while waiting for their turn at the skate park.

Special thanks go out to Malia and Jaia Waites who were the skate instructors for this event.

Goyang students on Maui for Global Leadership experience Twenty five student Leaders from Maui County’s sister city of Goyang, South Korea are here on a 2-week Global Leadership experience.

Part of their experience is reading aloud to 1st graders at Wailuku Elementary School.

Heart Association invites county personnel to participate in Walk County employees and their families are encouraged to participate in the 2013 Maui Go Red for Women Ambassador 5K Walk on Saturday, September 21, 2013 in Lahaina.

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s movement to save women’s lives.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death for women over 25,with one in three women dying of heart disease each year.

Go Red for Women celebrates

the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together and wipe out heart disease. The Maui Go Red for Women Ambassadors gives local women tips and information on healthy eating, exercise and risk factor reduction, such as smoking cessation, weight maintenance, blood pressure control, and blood cholesterol management. They also empower other women and the men who love them to join the movement to save women’s lives.

Join the Maui Go Red for Women Ambassador’s on Saturday, September 21 at the 2013 Maui Go Red for Women Ambassador’s 5K Walk! All proceeds from the 5KWalk will be donated to the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement.

State Junior Lifeguard Championships held on Maui State Junior Lifeguard Championships were held at DT Fleming Beach Park on July 27.

Cameron Center celebrates 40th Anniversary

The J. Walter Cameron Center is celebrating 40 years as a place of hope and service to the residents of Maui Nui. The center opened its doors on April 23, 1973 with 15 resident agencies.

Today, the mission of the Cameron Center is “To assist people with special needs by providing a home for Maui’s social service agencies.”

Bob Straub, Office Manager of the Mayor’s Office would like to share the accomplishment of Daniel Field, Department of Parks and Recreation,

Recreation Aide. At the Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio, Dan won a silver medal in the Men’s 65-69 4x100m relay. In addition, he placed fifth in both the triple jump (8.57m) and the long jump (4.3m). Dan also competed in the 50m and 100m dash placing 12th (7.88 sec.) and 17th (14.62 sec.), respectively. Dan barely missed qualifying for the medal round in the javelin, placing 9th (31.55m).

The Games resulted in several world records. Over 15,000 Senior Athletes competed in 21 sports in a dozen age categories. Congratulations Dan and thank you for representing Maui so well.

She is also a grandmother to Jayson Kawaha (Hanai grandson – 5 years old), Kaleb Nakamura (step-grandson – 7 months old) and Ariah Araki.

A & B donates $20K for nutrition program for seniors Alexander & Baldwin has again made a substantial donation to Maui County’s Nutrition Program for senior citizens.

A $20,000 contribution was presented to Mayor Alan Arakawa and Department of Housing & Human Concerns director JoAnn Ridao by A&B Senior Vice President Meredith J. Ching and HC&S General Manager Rick Volner Jr. during a cultural celebration event, Kumiai Day - Mixed Plate, at Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville.

A&B’s funding for Kaunoa’s Congregate Nutrition Program dates back to 1976, with its financial support helping to provide nutritious meals at its satellite centers throughout Maui County. Special activities and events for people age 60 and better are also supported by this

grant.

Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. business activities on Maui include Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, East Maui Irrigation Company, Kahului Trucking & Storage, Inc., A&B Wailea and A&B Properties, Inc. The Kumiai Day – Mixed Plate event was reminiscent of early sugar plantation days and was co-sponsored by HC&S, drawing 300+ seniors from all over Maui, who enjoyed a bountiful farmer’s market, plantation-days style games and activities, multicultural food and entertainment, in an authentic ambience. The day was complete with sugar cane

centerpieces and stalks, plentiful scrumptious snacks (fortune cookies, shrimp chips, raw sugar cane), plantation trivia, creative displays of ethnic apparel and fabulous doorprizes. Emcees ‘Manuel and Mary’ added their unique brand of humor throughout the day. Event co-sponsors A&B and HC&S produced a Mixed Plate fashion show representing various cultures, featuring Mayor Alan Arakawa as a surprise celebrity model. The fashion show models went above and beyond everyone’s expectations with their lively final number, dancing Gangnam Style!

The photo on the top left is from a recent site visit that Managing Director Keith Regan conducted to the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility. Regan visited the facility to tour the work being done on the aeration basin. It had been 30 years since the last time this basin was drained and likely to be another 30 years until the next time this type of work will be done.

Special thanks to Virgil Viernes for giving a tour of the plant and special thanks to all the hard working men and women of the division for making this project a success. During the tour, Viernes also showed Regan the extensive PV project that provides substantial energy to the plant and helps them control their energy costs and the new Ultraviolet Disinfection channel that will increase the capacity to produce more R-1 water that can be used for irrigation by local hotels, golf courses and other users.
