Our Keiki HALLOWEEN Breadwinner Wear a bunch of medals and carry a loaf of bread with you. Lego Costume Cut holes for the arms and head from a large cardboard box, hot glue plastic salad cups to the box, and spray paint the entire costume. Greek Yogurt Create a toga using a white sheet, then add a blue sash and write “yogurt” on it. No-Sew Lion Costume Cut thin strips out of an orange t-shirt and a yellow t-shirt, then hot glue the strips to a yellow hoodie – now you have a lion’s mane. Bunny Pull out those Easter bunny ears and add a pink nose and whiskers for a simple bunny costume. Cotton Candy Hot glue cotton balls and candy to a t-shirt. “I Love Lucy” Costume Wear a polka dot dress, white apron, pearl necklace and curly hair. You can use a temporary red hair spray to get Lucy’s signature red hair, if needed. Smarty Pants Hot glue smarties candies to a pair of pants. Gumball Machine Costume Take a white t-shirt and draw a circle in the center of it. Fill it with multi-colored felt balls using hot glue, then wear it with a red skirt to complete the look. Cat Wear all black, and draw a cat nose and whiskers on your face. Mickey or Minnie Mouse If you already have a pair of Mickey ears, then wear a pair of red shorts and a black t-shirt for a quick costume. For Minnie Mouse, wear a red polka dot dress and mouse ears. Use black eyeliner on the nose to complete the look. JP

With a little bit of creativity, you can make fun DIY costumes for the whole family. For more ideas, check out pinterest.com. 12 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Questions to Ask Your Child About Their School Day

When you see your kids at the end of a school day, you most likely want to know about their day. But what do you do when you are met by a wall of silence? How do you ask questions without seeming like a nosy parent? Here are some tips for posing questions without invading your kids’ space. Easy Questions. If you sense your child doesn’t want to give details about her day, and you’re still curious about it, ask simple questions. Questions that require only a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response are easier to respond to. Break the ice but don’t ask complicated questions. Trust that she needs space, and recognize that a probing parent can push her away. Light subjects. Choose a topic that has no deep emotional pull, such as lunch! Casually ask, “What was for lunch today?” or “How was that sandwich I made for you?” Also, ask questions about his favorite subject. If your child loves art, ask about that rather than a subject that he struggles with.

Maui Fire Department's Annual Big Show OCTOBER 2019 // KAHULUI & LAHAINA

Friends. Let your child know you care about her social life by asking about her friends. Again, start with simple questions. Inquire further only if you feel she is ready to share an experience about a best friend, for example. Gauge her receptivity before you ask any question by taking a moment to tune in to her mood. Quizzes and tests. Don’t be quick to ask your child about a quiz or test the minute he’s in the car. Drop it in casually when it feels appropriate. Again, be aware of his openness. Perhaps it’s better for you to hold back your questions than to have the answers or information you need. Open-ended questions. Turn things around and ask your child what she would like to tell you about her day. Not only will you hear details that matter to her, you may find out things you never thought to ask about. Give her the driver’s seat and the opportunity to lead the conversation. Balancing your desire to know about your child’s school life and his or her need for privacy, doesn’t have to be an issue. By sitting back and being lighthearted and sensitive to your child’s receptivity, you can create an environment that allows him or her to open up to you and for you to feel close. RG

The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety's annual Big Shows hosts Maui's largest firefighting and fire safety demonstrations. There are two separate shows – one in Kahului and another in Lahaina on a different date. It is a free event for the whole community to enjoy. Both shows include a visit from Sparky the Dog and Smokey the Bear, Air One helicopter, demos of Turnout Gear & HAZMAT suits, and demos from the different trucks. The Rescue unit displays equipment and takes apart a car using the "Jaws of Life," the Engine unit does a fire attack demo with a prop using live fire, and the Ladder unit displays ladder and sprays water from its highest point – and usually, the kids run out and cool off on the field. This year's shows will once again be held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, during the second half of October. Specific dates and locations TBA. They are free and open to the public.

Our Keiki BULIDING COMMUNITY

Paia Youth & Cultural Center The Paia Youth and Cultural Center (PYCC) has been providing Maui’s youth with inspiring, diverse and fun programs since 1993. From art classes to wilderness survival training, youth can take on as much or as little as they want. The center’s dynamic programs offer enriching experiences of Maui while presenting opportunities for growth and leadership. One of the PYCC’s strengths lies in its lifechanging, outdoors experiential program. Two such projects under this program are Malama Pono Project Venture Program and Maui Hero. Both projects focus on developing activityrelated skills, team building and leadership. Malama Pono Project Venture Program is headed by Brando Larue. This program includes outdoor adventures (e.g., hiking, backpacking, ropes course, surfing, bodyboarding, standup paddling, mountain biking, canoeing, and kayaking). It’s all about reconnecting youth with the outdoors through activities that take advantage of the island’s natural environment. Service learning based on cultural themes and activities accentuates its program with meaningful projects that impact the local community. One example is dune restoration where youth plant and tend to native plants in the sand dunes at Paia Bay.

“It’s a blessing to help inspire a generation of healthy, capable, caring and resilient young people who are making a positive contribution to their community and peer groups,” says Larue. Maui Hero, implemented by Lauren Lapow, is a comprehensive sequential program aimed at teaching survival skills to youth. At its core, it inspires leadership and sportsmanship while developing survival skills and educating youth on Hawaiian culture. This eight-week adventure, rite-of-passage program focuses on wilderness survival skills, disaster preparation education, and cultural education. Youth are given opportunities to practice skills with experts on hand. Professional first responders and Hawaiian practitioners support activities each week. "The Maui Hero Project believes that every youth has a hero within,” says Lapow. “Life is the adventure. Live your myth!” Rounding out the PYCC’s wide range of programs are Paia Bay Cafe, Hekili Multimedia Lab, RadiOpio, and the StoneWave Skate Park. Each program is run by caring, committed staff who offer support while allowing youth to grow and explore their interests. Membership for the PYCC is for youth ages 9-19 and is free. To make a tax-deductible donation to this non-profit, visit their website at pyccmaui.org.

Our Keiki KIDS & MONEY

Teaching Kids About Money Teaching kids about money and how to manage it, is often overlooked. But having money savvy kids is not only important for them and for you; it’s important for the world. They are, after all, our future. If you’d like to help your kids get a head start from a young age, here are a few tips. Get them a piggy bank. When a child sees money mounting up in the piggy bank, she begins to understand the value of saving. For older kids, explain how money will grow if it’s put into a savings account. Show them how to budget. Take your young ones shopping, tell them your budget, and let them add up as you go along. When a kid is shown how to keep within a certain monetary limit, he learns how to be responsible and make wise shopping choices. Pay them for chores. While some parents are against paying their children for chores, there are benefits of allowing them to learn the value of a trade. Working for a little pay will give your kids an idea of what that trade feels like. It can encourage them to learn their value as individuals, and appreciate certain skills or gifts they may have.

Talk to them about money. Include your children in conversations about money. Being open and honest about your family’s financial matters can be a great experience for your children. Without stressing them out if your finances are tight, or making them feel guilty about spending money, discuss with them the merits of making a certain purchase. Is it better for you to get that bike, or would you prefer to have a new set of clothes and shoes? Which is more important to them? Above all, let them be part of the conversation, voice their opinion, and make decisions when appropriate. “Money makes the world go round” might be a cliché, but it has more than a grain of truth to it. Encouraging your children to be wise savers and consumers is an important step in financial health. Start early and set them on a path to financial success. RG

SPOOKFEST FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25TH // 5:30PM–8:30PM 120 MAKANI RD., MAKAWAO Spookfest is an annual family-friendly Halloween event hosted at Kalama Intermediate in Makawao, and is open to the community. Our Keiki LISTENING SKILLS

Getting Kids to Listen Without Raising Your Voice BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

W

anting your child to “listen” often spans both listening as well as wanting them to respond to your words. Your first step is to meaningfully engage with your child, at her level: • Notice your child’s regulation level; is he amped up and so unable to “hear” you? Lethargic and thus not able to attend to you? Or calm and ready to receive your words? • How engrossed is your child in her current activity? Does she need a hand on her shoulder to get her attention? • Note timing. Is this a good time to introduce the idea/request you have to communicate? • Put your body across from your child’s, in his space and ideally at his eye level. • Avoid yelling/loud talking across spaces. Use a neutral volume voice. • Try a transition sentence such as “I have something to tell you that you might be interested in” and wait for your child to shift from their activity to you. • Use a helpful tone of voice (upward intonation), letting your child know you are on his side.

• Think about how to link what you are saying to make it relevant to your child– e.g., “Hey, I know you want to have time to play later, and I was thinking …” • Once you have his attention, comment on what he is doing before you give your verbiage– “Oh, you are finishing your puzzle, ok, just so you know, we’ll be getting ready for dinner in about 10 minutes.” • Give your reasoning, so your child understands your thinking process rather than merely expecting her to comply. This way, if she does not agree, she will be less likely to ignore you and more likely to verbalize her perspective to you and negotiate with you. • Create a routine of having a “check-in” with your child so that communicating about how things are going is typical– i.e., “Hey, let’s have a check-in.” This wording sounds fast and light so your child will have a higher likelihood of responding. • Perhaps the most important, have designated time daily with your child so that your child gets a lot of practice responding to you during shared pleasurable experiences, not just when you are asking him to do something. Kiegan Blake is an Occupational Therapist, Behavioral Specialist and Director of Maui Center For Child Development. For more information, please call (808) 873-7700 or MauiChildDevelopment.com

Our Keiki SCHOOL SUCCESS

Ways to Ensure Your Child's School Year is a Huge Success Here are a few suggestions to pave the way for a sensational school year. Mark your calendar. Make a note of important school events at the beginning of the year. Discuss the events and decide which you’d like to attend. Get their home desk organized. Sit down with your child and find out how he would like to organize his material. Perhaps he would like to buy colored folders or binders and color code pens and papers so that organizing school work becomes quick and efficient. Getting his space organized helps create an orderly, clean environment. Give them down time. Allow your child to unwind after school in a non-structured way. An organized sport may still be a little too structured. Instead, consider allowing her to just play, nap, do art, or have quiet time in her room without a device. Let her truly unwind and decompress from school and all the stimulation that comes with it.

Maintain routine. Kids thrive on a schedule that is planned and expected. Consult them on how much they’d like to do in terms of afterschool extracurricular activities. Try to maintain a pattern of early nights, even during the weekend while they still enjoy time off from school. Check in often. Talk to your child about his school life. Find appropriate moments in your day to ask him how things are going at school. Strike the balance between asking too little and too much. Remember, they need space to figure things out. Usher in the new school year with confidence and ease by helping your child feel organized, well rested, and supported when needed. Rest assured that if you create a healthy environment, you’ve done your job – the rest is up to them! RG

Our Keiki HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS

Creating Halloween Memories W

hether you and your family prefer lighthearted or scary fun for Halloween, there are many ways to create memories with your keiki for the holiday. These are some ideas: • Enter a local Halloween costume contest. • Attend the Lahaina Halloween parade. • Go trick-or-treating at a local mall, as they often host a family night during the season. • Carve a pumpkin together, but wait until later in the season when the heat and humidity passes, or you may be dealing with a rotten pumpkin before the holiday even arrives. • Check out the Maui Ocean Center for any fun Halloween events they may host. They have been known to host an underwater pumpkin carving activity – a sight to see, for sure! • Go trick-or-treating in your local neighborhood. • Host a potluck Halloween night and invite your friends over for games and fun.

• Make your own DIY Halloween costumes. • Take creative family photos while dressed in your costumes. • Turn your home into a child-friendly “haunted house.” Search Pinterest for ideas on how to ‘spookify’ your abode. • “Boo” your neighbors. Here’s how: leave a “Boo” poem with instructions, along with a small gift basket. Then that neighbor is asked to leave a “We’ve been Boo-ed” sign near their front door, alerting neighbors that the tradition has begun! Then that neighbor is asked to “Boo” two other homes, leading to a chain reaction of Halloween memories created. • Host a Halloween craft party for your keiki and their friends. It will be an opportunity to be creative and connect with others in the community. • Volunteer to do a Halloween craft at your child’s school. Our Keiki SUPPORTING TEACHERS

Innovative Program Supports Teachers at Roots School Research shows that many teachers stop teaching after their first five years because of a lack of time to prepare creative lessons, a lack of time to balance personal life with teaching, and a lack of freedom in what and how to teach. To address this universal issue of teacher burnout, Roots School in Haiku will launch its new Kakou Program starting in the 2019/2020 school year. “We believe that we are the only school in the State to support teachers with a program like this,” says Melita Charan, Roots Head of School. To address these issues, Roots will be giving Lead Teachers one flex day per week outside the classroom. A Teaching Specialist will rotate between each classroom and teach STEM, Hawaiian studies, or arts on the day of the week that the Lead Teacher is out of the classroom. On their flex day, teachers will be free to lesson plan, communicate with parents, take care of their own mind, body and spirit, or get involved in community activities. Having a flexible day each week will give teachers the space to be innovative and creative, which will then be reflected in the classroom. Roots teachers are also given the freedom to create their own individual curriculum based on State and national benchmarks. The goal

is for content to be current, relevant and constantly developing based on individual classes. “We not only hand pick quality teachers, we strive to provide a system where they do not struggle to get through the day with work that is the same year after year,” says Charan. In addition, Roots will also be increasing and encouraging communication between teachers and parents. “Traditionally, parents have not been encouraged or supported in being open and honest with the school community and their child’s teacher,” says Charan. Parents will be asked to take an active role in creating a relationship with their child’s teacher. “By supporting teachers through the Kakou Program, we are modeling our mission for our students, their families, and the wider community,” says Charan. Roots School is a progressive private school in Haiku, serving children from Preschool to 8th Grade. For more information, call 250-7988, email office@ rootsmaui.org, or visit www.rootsmaui.org.

Our Keiki ECO-FRIENDLY

Malama 'Aina, One Diaper at a Time! Like most expecting parents, there are many questions and decisions to make before a baby is born - doctor or midwife; hospital or home birth; the right stroller and car seat; bottle or breastfeed; and diapering. The Hard Facts • Just for U.S. babies, 200,000 trees are lost each year to disposable diapers. Twenty billion disposables are dumped in landfills each year – that’s 3.5 million tons of waste. • 500 years for disposables to decompose, which poses a threat to our ground water. • Eco-friendly disposables contain sodium polyacrylate so are not fully biodegradable. Kōkua Diaper is proud to offer their diaper service to the ‘ohana of Maui providing a weekly supply of ethically sourced organic cotton diapers delivered to your home. Their washing process has been tested and formulated to ensure fully cleaned and sanitized diapers. They use an EPA-certified plant-derived detergent that is gentle to the skin and eco-friendly to our island home. Their diapers are pH balanced to ensure that the only thing touching your keiki’s bottom is organic cotton.

Check them out at www.kokuadiaper.com for more information.

Baby Keiki

New Baby? Help a Sibling Adjust

41 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Baby Keiki NEW BABY

Bringing a baby home is an adjustment for the whole family. Here are some ways you can help your other children prepare to welcome the newest addition home. Open Communication Long before the baby arrives, begin preparing your child for this new addition by talking about the new baby and what he may expect when the baby comes home. Let him know that the baby will need to eat and sleep a lot at first. See if your child has any questions about becoming a big brother (or sister) and listen with loving intention. He may not have any questions at all, but knowing that you are willing to listen may be comforting enough.

Brainstorming Fun Big Sibling Tasks Children love to be part of the bigger picture, and by assigning fun tasks as the official older sibling, she can feel like her contribution

matters. Validating her worth and need in the family reinforces the truth that even though another baby is on the way, she is forever needed and just as important.

Lullaby Time! Let your older child pick a lullaby that is his special song to sing for baby. He can begin while the baby is still in the womb, then on the day they meet, sing it to the baby. It may help form a special connection between them every time the song is sung.

One-on-One Time with Your Older Child Giving your child your undivided attention, even for as little as ten minutes, may remind her that you share a bond that cannot be broken. It will give you and your child time to reconnect amidst the busyness of having a newborn at home. If your older child has no other siblings, one way to practice being around a baby is by enjoying playdates with others. He can get a glimpse at what it is like having a baby around, and hopefully get excited about having a baby sibling in the home himself! JP

Baby Keiki TRANSITIONS

Don't Leave Me! Ways to Make Drop-off Easier Dropping off your child at child care can be stressful for both you and your child, especially if he or she is crying and clinging on to you through the process. Here are a few tips to consider before your next drop-off meltdown occurs. Stop, Drop and Go! While it is nice to visit with the teachers and other parents, often times this gives your child more time to become upset. If you make drop-off quick, then it may allow your child to transition more easily into classroom time. Share drop-off duty. If your child is particularly clingy with one parent at drop-off, when possible, have the other parent do the drop-off; this will save both you and your child some heartache. Try positive reinforcement. Give your child the opportunity to earn a small reward, like a treat, toy or time doing her favorite activity, if she doesn’t cry during drop-off time for a set period of time – for instance, the entire week. Prepare your child. If your child is a bit older, try taking some time to prepare him for the day of child care. Let him know that it is okay to

miss you while you are apart, and that you miss him, too; and remind him that you will be there to pick him up. Listen to his concerns with love and compassion. Remind him of the expectations for drop-off – i.e., for him to walk in bravely and to remember that you will be there after his nap time. Giving him reference points for the day may help reassure him. Direct your child to the fun. Another option for a smooth drop-off is to direct your child to a favorite activity. Once she gets involved in the activity, give her a quick hug goodbye, then let her play. Ask for input. Have your child’s teacher keep you in the loop as to how long it takes your child to calm down, what helps him calm down, and any other ideas for making the transition at drop-off easier. Working as a team may help you discover the best approach for your child. JP

Baby Keiki CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Parent Leadership Training Institute Learn how to improve your community and nurture your child’s mind — for free! These resources are provided by Hawai'i Children’s Action Network (HCAN), a nonprofit fighting for keiki and their families. Here’s how you can join this grassroots movement and keep Hawai'i’s children safe, healthy and ready to learn: Transform Your Community Want to create meaningful change in your community? As a parent or caregiver, you may have solutions to your community’s challenges, but feel like your ideas are overlooked. Through HCAN’s free Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), you’ll learn how to make your voice heard as a leader and advocate. By developing solutions to improve the lives of our children and families, you’ll learn how to bridge the gap between government decisions and your community’s real needs. PLTI graduates have increased voter engagement, revitalized a community playground, established an art program for youth in a transitional shelter, and much more. PLTI has produced three cohorts of graduates on O'ahu, and is now coming to Maui. Visit www.hawaii-can.org/plti to learn more about this free opportunity.

Learn About Your Little One’s Mind Babies start to learn the moment they’re born, and research shows that the majority of brain development occurs before the age of five. Through a new campaign, Little Minds Matter, you can get free and simple early learning tips, milestones to track your children’s development, and statewide resources for childcare, preschool, and other programs. Organized by HCAN and other community partners, Little Minds Matter aims to give all Hawai'i’s children a successful start in life. This campaign is showing parents and caregivers that they don’t need to be experts in child development to provide the best early learning experiences. Download the free app, Vroom, or visit the website, www.littlemindsmatterhi.com, for tips and resources. For fun ideas and easy activities, follow Little Minds Matter Hawaii on Facebook and Instagram.

It doesn’t exist. But you won’t need one. You and your family are your child’s best teachers. And it’s not as hard as you may think. Even the simplest interactions can help your baby’s brain develop to its fullest potential. Things like playing peek-a-boo, singing songs, reading stories and just talking. For more easy ways to help your child learn and grow, visit LittleMindsMatterHI.com. 47 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Here’s a simple lunch or snack for your back-to-school keiki.

Chicken and Cheese Quesadilla

1 tsp. vegetable oil ¹⁄³ cup shredded Mexican cheese blend ¼ cup diced rotisserie chicken 8-inch whole-wheat flour tortilla

Heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle cheese and chicken over half of the tortilla. Fold tortilla in half to cover the filling. Place in skillet and cook about 2 minutes. Use a pancake turner to flip the quesadilla and cook 2 minutes. Cool and slice into three pieces. Makes 1 serving.

Ohana INCREASE HAPPINESS

Audrey Hepburn once said, “The most important thing is to enjoy your life – to be happy – it’s all that matters.” If you think that’s easier said than done, consider the following ways to lighten your day and your life.

outdoors in a setting that resonates with you. Getting back to the basics can help reset your nervous system and rejuvenate your soul.

Take time for self-care.

One of the simplest ways that you can retrain your mind to focus on the positive, is to write down what you are grateful for. Take a minute and write down three things that bring you a sense of joy and awe.

Devote part of your day to doing something that you love. If you’re out of ideas, ask yourself in a quiet moment what would bring you joy in that moment. Take that yoga class, hike in the forest, read a chapter in the book you’ve been meaning to read. Resist the urge to call your time ‘indulgent’ – it’s about taking care of yourself.

Say goodbye to toxic relationships. Letting go of relationships that no longer serve you can be liberating. Opening that space in your life can feel freeing and can invite new, invigorating energy.

Get out in nature. Connecting with nature can be soothing and refreshing. Make time in your day to be

Accept yourself. Come to terms with your body, life and relationships, and free yourself from the internal critic. Acknowledging that you came into the world in a beautiful form and are here to experience life just as you are, can be an important step to increasing your happiness.

Be grateful.

Give to others. Give a compliment to a friend or help an elderly neighbor to collect her shopping, and feel the benefits of opening your heart. You don’t even need to donate money to charity or join a cause. It’s more about experiencing everyday happiness through simple acts of giving to others. Take steps towards making your happiness a priority today by caring for yourself. Caring for your wellbeing in a loving, intentional way can be life changing. Try it and see the difference! RG

Ohana GRANDPARENTS DAY

Celebrate Grandparents Day "Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.” - Alex Haley Grandparents Day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day every year. It became a national holiday in 1978. Marian McQuade proposed the day to encourage families to visit with elderly family members living in nursing homes, but realized that honoring grandparents for their wisdom and family history proved invaluable. You can celebrate the grandparents in your family’s life by doing some of the following activities. Your child can “interview” his grandparent(s) using templates available online. Some questions he may want to ask include: name, age, number of siblings, favorite food, skills, favorite hobby, earliest childhood memory, most meaningful moments from each decade, favorite thing about growing old – to name just a few. You may also want to have your child answer questions about her relationship with her grandparent(s). You could ask her to complete the following sentences: My favorite activity with grandma is…; I know my grandma loves me because…; I love my grandma because…; My favorite memory with grandma is…; The best meal my grandma has ever made is…

4th Annual North Shore Run SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH // 7AM 519 BALDWIN AVE., PAIA

You can also make a craft for the grandparent in your life! Help your child make a flower using construction paper. Cut out the petals, stem and leaves, then glue the pieces to a background page. Your child can write one thing he loves about his grandparent on each petal. On the center circle write, “I love my grandma because…” Find a Grandparents Day coloring page online, print it, and have your kids color it in – a simple and sweet gift. Send a hug! Trace your child’s outstretched arms to create a giant paper “hug” that you can send in the mail. Make a mini photo book. Print out your favorite family photos, then hole punch the corners and add them to a metal ring. However you choose to love and honor the grandparents in your life this year, may they know how much you care and how valuable they are to the community. JP The North Shore Run is a unique race covering a distance of 7.25 miles. It begins and ends at Doris Todd Christian Academy. This beautiful, hilly course takes you on a mix of asphalt and dirt roads in Paia on Maui’s north shore, including Hana Hwy., Holomua, and Baldwin Avenue. The annual race was started to raise money for scholarships for kids who want to attend DTCA but can’t afford it. All proceeds go directly to tuition for the keiki. The early bird rate is $40, then $50 after September 9; and $100 for relay teams of 4. Participants receive a t-shirt and racing bib (may not be available if registered after September 9). Medals are awarded to the top male and female finishers and overall relay team in their age category. To register, go to www.doristoddchristian.org. For more information, contact run@doristoddchristian.org or 579-9237.

Ohana MAUI FIRE DEPARTMENT

Fire Prevention: Not Every Hero Wears a Cape

T

he Maui Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years — to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign: “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” The campaign works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. NFPA statistics show that in 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to 357,000 home structure fires. These fires caused 2,630 fire deaths and 10,600 fire injuries. On average, seven people died each day in a fire in a home during 2012 to 2016. “These numbers show that home fires continue to pose a significant threat to safety,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm

sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.” While NFPA and the Maui Fire Department are focusing on home fires, these messages apply to virtually any location. “Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” said Firefighter Nohea Williams. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.” The Maui Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign – “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” – including not one but two Big Fire Shows. Keep an eye out for flyers and radio ads on the exact dates for these events. To find out more about Fire Prevention Week programs and activities in Maui, please contact the Maui Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau at 808-876-4690. For more general information about Fire Prevention Week and home escape planning, visit www.fpw.org.

Ohana GOOD HABITS

Homework Rituals to Ace the School Year Many children may come home from a day at school feeling tired and stressed. Add homework to their load and your child can quickly feel overwhelmed and unenthusiastic about learning. To help remedy this situation, here are a few tips. Down time. Before starting homework, allow your child some time to eat, drink and be a child. Unwinding after a day at school is important and can help reset their energy levels. Routine. Set a time and remind them, “Remember 5:00 to 6:00 is homework time!” Staying committed to an allotted time every day helps your child get in a rhythm. Their body tunes in to that rhythm and expects a certain daily pattern. Clean space. Keeping a clean and clear homework space can give your child a sense of calm and a greater ability to focus. Remove toys, devices and any other distractions so that they can get the job done. Practice. Homework can often be about practicing a newly learned skill. If your child complains about having homework, explain to them that

being proficient at their multiplication tables, for example, will help them improve their math skills. Through practice, they will get better and schoolwork and homework will be easier. Digging deeper. For older children, a reminder that working on a project at home is an opportunity for them to explore a subject or topic. Being at home in a relaxed and supportive environment might be just the space in which they can scratch below the surface and develop a new interest. Self-discipline. Developing good study skills is an important life skill and can help your teenager prepare for college and beyond. Learning to be independent and organized, and to plan ahead, will serve them throughout life. Set them on the right track and watch them blossom. Homework rituals are important to establish early in your child’s life. Encourage an appropriate environment and support them on their journey. One day they may even thank you! RG Danelle Watson will be celebrating 10 years as Director of Alexander Academy of Performing Arts! The party will be held at AAPA's Hali'imaile studio (870 Haliimaile Road, Haliimaile) for everyone who has joined AAPA over the years to celebrate Alexander Academy, talk story, and connect with friends.

AAPA's 10-Year Anniversary Celebration SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST // 2PM–5PM 870 HALI'IMAILE ROAD, HALI'IMAILE

Attendees are welcome to bring a memory letter, photo or video, or a potluck dish to share. If you are unable to make it but wish to share a video, photo or letter, you can send your memory to office@alexanderacademy.info, and it will be shared on your behalf. Danelle Watson reflected, “This has been a cherishing decade, September 1, 2009 to September 1, 2019! My heart has been filled and I feel deep gratitude for our dancing 'ohana dance academy.”

Ohana COALITION FOR A TOBACCO-FREE HAWAI'I

Youth Vaping: What You Need to Know Youth vaping is an epidemic and we should all be concerned. National data for 2018 shows that 20.8 percent of high school students are currently vaping. That is a 78 percent increase from the previous year and an unprecedented increase in youth substance use of any kind. Hawai‘i data shows that one in four of our state’s high school students are vaping. In Maui County, one in three high school students are current users, and one in five intermediate school students vape. Elementary schools across our state are now reporting use by students as well. Youth are targeted by the vaping industry in the same way that Big Tobacco companies successfully targeted previous generations. While candy-flavored cigarettes and tobacco advertisements targeting kids are no longer allowed, vape products are not regulated equally. In Hawai‘i, vaping products remain practically unregulated and can be sold and purchased

by pretty much anyone, as there is no licensing or permitting of retailers, no taxation, and no restriction of online sales. Not by accident, most of the 15,500 e-liquids on the market mimic candy, fruit juice, and sugar cereals popular with children. Local youth almost exclusively use pod-based systems, like Juul and Suorin, which are only available in high nicotine concentrations, the highly-addictive chemical found in traditional cigarettes. One Juul pod contains as much nicotine as at least 40 cigarettes. Decades of research prove that youth who use nicotine are more easily addicted than adults, as their brains are not yet fully developed. In addition, they experience impaired learning and behavior, as well as reduced impulse control, while also being at higher risk for increased anxiety and depression. It’s too late to prevent this epidemic, but there are steps we can take now to help reverse it. First, educate yourself and your kids. Learn more at 808novape.org and vapefreehawaii. com. You can also advocate for stronger vaping regulations by signing up for advocacy updates and lending your voice and support to efforts by Hawai‘i Public Health Institute and Coalition for a TobaccoFree Hawai‘i in the 2020 legislative session. Ohana SEASONAL ACTIVITIES

Fall Fun on Maui E

very season on Maui offers different opportunities to explore nature, connect with your family, and get creative. If you are looking for ways to add some fall fun to your routine, here are some ideas to explore: Gather the kiddos and make a fall bucket list together. As you accomplish each activity, cross it off your list and feel good about being intentional with your time together. Create a gratefulness garland. Cut out leaf shapes from paper and write one thing you are grateful for each day. Share with each other around the breakfast or dinner table, and hang it up for all to see. Taking time to share what you are thankful for may lift your spirits and draw you closer together as you focus on the blessings in life. Maui offers many wonderful hikes for the family. Head Upcountry for cooler temps and an opportunity to see the beautiful fall leaves.

Perhaps do a nature scavenger hunt in the forest. Or collect leaves and pinecones to make fall crafts once you get home. If you’re out hiking as a family, bring a nature journal for each family member to draw or write about the things they see on the hike. Take it one step further by asking how hiking together and taking time to appreciate nature made each person feel. Visit Kula Country Farms for pumpkin patch fun and gorgeous bicoastal views. Back at home, consider carving a pumpkin as a family, making homemade caramel apples together, or making a homemade pumpkin spice latte. Attend the Maui Fair. The fair kicks off each year with Maui’s largest parade. Enjoy rides, ono food and first-rate entertainment, making family memories that last a lifetime. Look out for events you can attend as a family. Participate in a beach clean-up day as a family, attend a Family Day at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, or participate in one of the many fall festivals at a school or church. JP

Maui's Pumpkin Patch OPEN EVERY DAY IN OCTOBER // 9AM–4PM 6240 KULA HWY., KULA The Kula Country Farms Pumpkin Patch is a fantastic opportunity for family and friends to get together and say hello to the friendly farm animals, take a wander through the children's garden, play mini golf, feel tiny under towering sunflowers, explore the famous corn maze and most importantly pick your own pumpkins! There's truly something for everyone. The theme for the pumpkin patch this year is the "honey bee" so look out for the special events being hosted this year including pumpkin carving and costume contests! Kula Country Farms will also feature a Country Music Center, Halloween inspired crafts, entertainment and delicious goodies brought to you by local crafters and food vendors.

Get a jump on protecting Maui's coral reefs

Give Maui's Coral Reefs Some Needed TLC BY ANNE RILLERO MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL

Switch today to sunscreens that are free of reef-harming oxybenzone and octinoxate Learn more at www.mauireefs.org/sunscreen

D

id you know that the hottest months of the year on Maui include August, September and October? Heading to the beach to cool off ? Please keep in mind that during this year’s warmest months, Maui’s coral reefs may need some extra TLC. In fact, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Watch program has issued coral reef bleaching warnings and alerts for late summer/early fall this year. Help your kids understand coral bleaching by first teaching them about corals. Corals are made of colonies of millions of tiny soft-bodied animals called coral polyps that slowly build a hard base around themselves. The coral polyps allow beneficial algae to live within their bodies. The algae convert energy from sunlight into food for the corals and also give corals their color. But when the ocean gets too warm, the algae can't use the sun's energy as efficiently, and they produce chemicals that are toxic to the coral polyps. To protect themselves, the corals

expel the algae, even though the algae provide much of their food. Without the algae, the corals turn white (or "bleach"). If the hot weather doesn't last long or if the temperatures don't get too high, the corals can recover. But with prolonged hot weather, bleached corals weaken and die. What can your family do? There isn't a practical way to cool our oceans, but you can help reduce stress on corals to make them as resilient as possible. Choose sunscreens that are free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals found to harm or kill corals. Select zinc-based or titaniumdioxide-based products instead. Or better yet, outfit your family with rash guards and widebrimmed hats. Teach your keiki to never stand or walk on corals, as this can destroy the tiny soft coral polyps. A good rule is "stand only on sand." Corals need clean water, so help reduce runoff and sediment from land. Use fewer chemicals in your home and yard. Reduce your use of fossil fuels. Last but not least, work to combat climate change. Empower your kids to join you in making a difference.

Ohana HEALTHY & SAFE

Kula Hospital: Tips for Keeping Kids Healthy & Safe Are your kids heading back to school? Nurture impressionable young minds by teaching important health-care tips so that they stay safe and “ahead of the class.” Insist that they get a good night’s sleep. Remind them to wash their hands and show them the right way to cover their mouths when they cough. Clean germ-harboring smart-phone devices. Adjust backpacks to avoid injuries. Prepare nutritious foods to fuel their energy. Encourage healthful habits by being good role models. Prevention is key — of course — so be aware of allergens and keep up with eye examinations and other physical tests. If they catch a common cold or flu (cases increase in October), or have minor physical ailments that are too worrisome to treat at home, visit your primary-care physician during office hours. If your child’s temperature soars after hours, needs stitches from a fall, or incurs an injury that only X rays and other medical tests can reveal, then heading to the hospital emergency room is the safest option.

“Our Emergency Department offers X-ray and laboratory services, and can take care of splinting, suturing and wound care, as well as administer IV fluids and medications,” says Rachel Corah, Manager of Emergency Services at Kula Hospital. “There is a physician on staff in the ER 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” The Kula Hospital Emergency Room is a fast and convenient choice for non-life-threatening emergencies for families who live upcountry. “On most weekdays, there is little or no wait. Weekends and holidays are generally busier.“ Note that the Kula Hospital ER and its operators do not provide medical advice over the phone. Direct medical questions to your primary-care physician and insurance coverage questions to your licensed carrier. Last but not least, instruct your children that if anyone in the family has a serious medical issue such as a heart attack or stroke, they should call “911” immediately. Operators will determine the crucial life-saving next steps. Kula Hospital’s sister facility, the Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku, boasts a state-of-the-art ER department and helipad.
