It is just so fun to see all the kids' faces light up, including mine, when they can walk into a giant gingerbread house and even send mail to Santa in a special North Pole mailbox. The Gift of

Enough

The buildup to holidays generally involves many things. An increasing number of social engagements, school-related events, and of course, Christmas-laden decor everywhere you go, usually starting in early October.

The general trend in our culture is one of always wanting more. With the ever-increasing options, and the highly targeted ads that show up on our feeds, seemingly bringing us just what we didn’t know we needed, it can be a challenge to stay grounded.

To buy into this mentality leads to an unrelenting cycle of stress.

We do, however, have a choice of how much we engage with this collective wave of always wanting more. We can choose to shift our focus from never enough to recognizing the gifts of what truly has meaning and significance in our lives.

In the moment. Notice when you’re getting caught up in the treadmill of thinking that buying one more thing will somehow make you feel better, or that it’s the path to happiness. Instead, bring yourself more fully into the present moment. Bring your awareness to who you are with, and where you are. Notice the shift in your body as you move from a feeling of scarcity to a feeling of fullness in the moment.

Plan ahead. Create opportunities in your schedule to connect with your kids and help them connect with the natural world, rather

than the trappings of being in a store. Gather greens and make a wreath or a simple table arrangement, collect driftwood and design a sculpture, or play with words as you attempt to describe what you see, hear, touch, and smell. Take turns choosing where you will go and what you will do. Your kids will cherish this time where they get your full attention.

Maui offers an endless array of opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. Whether you head to the forest for a hike, the beach for a swim, or a stream, field, or park, there is a place near you where you can take yourself and your family and soak in your senses. Play a game and listen for how many sounds you can hear, how many colors and textures you can see, and the myriad of smells that waft your way.

As you begin to shift to appreciating the bounty available through the people you cherish and the natural world, you will begin to notice that the gift of the present moment is the most meaningful one of all.

Taking your keiki out can sometimes feel like a big challenge, especially when a tantrum is just around the corner. But with a few easy and positive tricks up your sleeve, you can make your outings smoother with more patience and less stress. Here are three simple strategies to help keep the peace and make trips more enjoyable for you and your keiki.

Countdown to smooth transitions. Transitions, especially when leaving fun things or friends, can be tough for kids. Instead of suddenly announcing it’s time to go, try giving them a heads-up with a countdown. You can say something like, “We’ll leave in five minutes,” or “Four more pushes on the swing, then we’re heading out.” This gives your child a chance to prepare for the change, making it easier to transition without a meltdown. Kids love knowing what’s coming next, so this simple trick can make a big difference.

Swap “stop” for specific phrases. “Stop” loses its power if we use it too much. Instead of always saying “stop,” try using a more specific phrase that guides your child’s behavior while saving “stop” for the really important moments.

3 Positive Hacks to Avoid Tantrums

For example, if your child throws a toy, instead of saying “stop,” you could say, “Let’s play this way,” or “What are you trying to tell me?” This way, when you need to say “stop” in an emergency, your child knows it’s serious.

Offer choices to give them control. Kids love feeling like they have a say in what’s happening. Giving them choices, even in small things, this will help avoid power struggles and tantrums. For example, when it’s time to leave the park, you might ask, “Do you want to walk or skip to the car?” At bedtime try, “Do you want two or three more minutes of play?” Offering choices lets your child feel in control while you’re still guiding the situation. Just make sure you’re cool with whichever option they choose.

By using countdowns, being thoughtful about when to say “stop,” and offering choices, you can make your day-to-day moments a lot more peaceful. These strategies are easy to put into practice and can help you build a positive relationship with your child, making everyday adventures more fun for both of you. And remember, it’s all about progress, not perfection—so go easy on yourself as you try these out.

A New Home for Sacred Hearts School

Within three weeks following the August 2023 Lahaina wildfire, Sacred Hearts School swiftly established an emergency school site at Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua, becoming the first Lahaina school to reopen for in-person learning. Transitioning to the new Ka‘anapali campus, located at 2530 Kekaa Drive, this 2024–2025 school year marks a new chapter in Sacred Hearts School’s history.

“We are immensely grateful to our school’s ‘ohana, church parishioners, the Kapalua Resort Association, and the community who supported us during that challenging period,” said Tonata Lolesio, Principal of Sacred Hearts School. “Our 225 keiki needed stability during that tumultuous time, and their parents needed support as they rebuilt their lives. The property surrounding Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua graciously transformed, helping to create classrooms filled with learning and hope.”

Efforts to secure a school site and plan for the new temporary campus at Ka‘anapali began in earnest in late 2023. This collaborative effort involved multiple stakeholders, including school officials, the Diocese of Honolulu, Lahaina’s Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, the property’s landowners Rodger and Lisa May of Pineapple Properties, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), Stable Road Foundation, Ka‘anapali Beach Resort Association, and numerous volunteers and community members. Design work began in November 2023, and construction commenced in February 2024.

In addition to the thirteen air-conditioned classrooms housed within existing buildings, portable units were added to provide more classroom and multi-use space, a school office, and counseling and maintenance areas. A playground was created, and part of the driveway was transformed into a multipurpose court for

basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. Additional improvements included wall art in the three Early Learning Center classrooms and an outdoor seating area for students to enjoy lunch. Renovations were completed in June 2024. The cost of the Ka‘anapali school site, including renovations and lease payments for three years, is estimated at $2.5 million.

With the opening of the new campus in August 2024, Sacred Hearts School remains steadfast in its mission to provide excellence in education rooted in the Catholic tradition for students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. An Early Learning Center for pre-k students ages three to five will also be offered, expanding educational opportunities for the community.

“As Sacred Hearts School prepares to embark on this new chapter at Ka‘anapali Resort, we are filled with anticipation and hope for the future,” expressed Lolesio. “This move underscores our unwavering commitment to nurturing our students and supporting the broader Lahaina community as it continues to recover from the impact of the wildfire, offering a beacon of hope in these challenging times.”

For those interested in supporting Sacred Hearts School and its mission, opportunities for fundraising and tuition assistance are available. The school’s $4 million Tuition Assistance Campaign is ongoing, with all donations welcome. For more information, visit www.shsmaui.org.

Helping Your Child Cope with Fears

All kids can have fears and they may change over time according to your child’s development and life events. Children tend to internalize their fears so it is helpful to have strategies to help your kids talk about and process their worries:

• Cultivate your attachment to your child by being attuned to your child’s signals and spending robust one-to-one time with your child across the week—you then become “safe” for your child to verbalize a wide range of feelings, including worries

• Create a culture that home is a safe place for all feelings—express a range of your own emotions during daily events as a model for your child

• Build your child’s emotional vocabulary through fun ‘feelings games’ that match your child’s age

• If your child is prone to worries, try to have them do robust physical activity daily as this allows them to physiologically discharge worries from their day

• For elementary-aged kids, promote imaginative play as a natural venue to play out the internal feelings they are grappling with

• Do daily check-ins about what went well in the day and what was “tricky”

• When your child expresses a worry, respond with interest “Oh, I want to hear more about that”

• Validate your child’s worry “Hmm, that sounds tricky”

• Use an “I wonder” statement to enroll your child in problem-solving “Hmmm, I wonder what we could do about this?”

• Draw pictures and role-play possible solutions together

• Cultivate a “Cozy Space” at home that is designed by you and your child that is comforting and soothing and sets the tone for relaxation and safety

• There are many picture books for different ages of kids that address the topic of worries that you and your child can read together in their cozy space

• Co-create a visual “menu” of soothing/ calming activities with your child including snuggling with their favorite stuffie, playing with favorite quiet toys, reading a favorite book, snuggling with you, listening to music, looking at a family photo album, etc.

If your child is experiencing stressful life events such as family separation, frequent moves, bullying, performance anxiety, a traumatic experience, abuse, or persistent worries or sadness, please contact a licensed mental health professional experienced in working with children to help give you and your child specific supports.

Festive Family Reads

Holidays are a time for celebrating family traditions such as gathering together, eating special foods, expressing gratitude, and giving gifts to others. The following books can help you and your keiki talk about the ways in which your family celebrates holidays, and which traditions (new or old) are most meaningful. Perhaps you will be inspired to create new traditions!

• Just One More Sleep: All Good Things Come to Those Who Wait . . . and Wait . . . and Wait by Jamie Lee Curtis helps kids celebrate milestones and holidays throughout the year. This hilarious book channels childhood exuberance and explains why waiting can be wonderful--and why it can be worth it!

• The Joyful Book by Todd Parr explores the many ways to be joyful during the winter holidays—and all year long.

• Thankful by Elaine Vickers follows a girl as she writes down the things she’s thankful for on strips of paper and links them together. As one idea leads to another, her chain grows longer. This beautiful story is a muchneeded reminder to observe and honor life’s small joys.

• The Blue Table by Christopher Raschka: The Blue Table becomes more than just a blue table, as plans are made, families gather, food is served, and gratitude is felt.

• Our Table by Peter Reynolds is an ode to traditions that unite families, and it brings readers together with a universal message of gratitude.

Baby + Health

Creating Balance in Pregnancy

My oldest son is almost 171/2. I remember my pregnancy with him as if it was yesterday. At the time, I was living in Colorado, and as is with most people there, I was always active. I was hiking, rock climbing, dancing, cross-country skiing, biking, and working full-time as a teacher. I remember walking into the school office one day, breaking down, and crying to our office secretary (a retired midwife). I wasn’t used to feeling so completely and utterly worn out. She looked at me, smiled and said, “Well you do realize that you are building an actual human in your body.” When she said that, I stopped to pause and acknowledge what a remarkable miracle pregnancy is. I was growing a human inside of me!

Newly expecting moms forget that their bodies are expending massive amounts of energy to create new life. On top of that, they continue doing all the things they have always done—with the same intensity, regularity, and stamina. The truth is, however, that we can, and need to, allow ourselves grace. It’s ok if we don’t have the energy to go to that yoga class or shop for and prepare dinner. It’s ok if we need to sneak a little cat nap in. It’s ok to ask for help or hire help to get those household chores done. It’s ok to relax and pamper ourselves because remember, you are growing a human inside you. That alone is a monumental task. Both you and your baby benefit from finding balance. Here are ideas to keep in mind:

• Keep your stress levels down. Too much stress can use up vital nutritional stores needed for your developing baby and is hard on your adrenals.

• Find activities that help you feel nourished, calm and nurtured. These activities may be different from the ones you have normally done, and that is okay.

• Get adequate rest.

• Make sure you are getting your nutritional needs met.

• Set boundaries and be kind to yourself. Pregnancy is not a time to take on new projects, make a big move, start a new job, or push your body too hard.

• Feeling overwhelmed and anxious is normal with all the changes happening in your body, preparing for birth, and thinking about life after the baby arrives.

• Lean on your support network, whether that’s your doctor, midwife, family, or friends.

• Most importantly, trust yourself and your body. Listen to what you need to feel prepared and centered.

• And above all, remember to breathe!

Askids return to school, it’s a great opportunity to discuss the importance of fostering healthy relationships. Learning to get along with friends, resolve conflicts, and maintain healthy boundaries can help keiki navigate more complex relationships later in life. These skills are crucial for a child's social and emotional development, helping them recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Here are some tips to help your keiki strengthen their relationship skills:

1. Start the conversation. Ask your child what they think makes a good friend. Discuss values like respect, trust, and equality, and let them know they can always talk to you about their friendships. Get to know your child’s friends and their parents.

2. Teach boundaries. Talk about respecting boundaries, like asking before taking a toy or respecting a friend's personal space. Help your child set their own boundaries and how to handle situations when others don’t respect them. This will also help them recognize warning signs of unhealthy relationships.

3. Practice consent. Teach your keiki that consent means respecting their own rights and others’. Let them know it’s okay to say no to physical contact or activities they don’t want to participate in. Support their right to say no to hugs or kisses if it makes them uncomfortable and offer alternatives, like a high five.

Help Keiki Foster Healthy Relationships

4. Build Empathy. Help your keiki understand how their actions affect others by asking how they would like to be treated. Encourage them to consider how others feel in their friendships.

5. Encourage healthy communication. Talk about the importance of listening, taking turns, expressing feelings, and validating others. Discuss what respectful communication looks like, and model it at home.

6. Address peer pressure. Peer pressure can start young, so it’s never too early to prepare your child. Role-play responses to situations like vaping or shoplifting and praise good decision-making to build confidence.

7. Be a role model. Your child is watching how you navigate relationships. Demonstrate respect, integrity, and empathy in your interactions with others to show them what healthy relationships look like.

8. Keep communication open. Let your child know they can always talk to you about their relationships, especially when they face challenges like bullying or conflicts with friends. Your response will build trust, encouraging them to keep coming to you.

Relationships have a powerful impact on health and well-being. By teaching your keiki these essential skills, you empower them to build solid, safe and fulfilling relationships that will support their development throughout their lives.

Healthy Relationships HELP KEIKI PRACTICE

As kids return to school, it’s a great time to discuss healthy relationships. After all, learning how to get along with friends and handle conflicts now will help them navigate more complex relationships later in life.

Try these tips to help your keiki strengthen their relationship skills:

• Start the conversation: Talk with your child about what makes a good friend. Ask what qualities are important to them and about their current and past friends and what they liked about those relationships.

• Teach boundaries: Talk with your child about respecting other people’s boundaries. Support kids in setting boundaries of their own and talk through possible solutions.

• Address peer pressure: Peer pressure can start at a young age. Help keiki identify potentially harmful situations, like smoking or stealing, and role-play how they would respond.

By teaching your keiki these essential skills, you empower them to build strong, respectful relationships that will support their well-being.

Helping kids stay safe and have fun in the water sets them up for a lifetime of freedom, especially when growing up in Maui. Our goal is to nurture them into well-rounded water enthusiasts who feel at ease in the pool and the ocean, whether on a board or not.

Water constitutes over 70% of our body composition, making it essential to life. There’s something incredibly freeing and calming about spending time in the water. However, ensuring your family’s water safety isn’t always as simple as back floats and bobs.

By creating healthy water habits as a family, you emphasize the importance of not only having fun but also maintaining situational awareness in aquatic environments. Even the most apprehensive keiki will feel more confident when they understand their surroundings and how to stay safe. As a parent, your primary goal is to remain calm, especially during high-stress moments, like when someone slips in the pool. Here are some more tips to try the next time you’re by the water with your family:

For the Pool

• Scan the area. Upon entering the pool, do a quick scan to familiarize everyone with the location of the steps, shallow end, and lifebuoy devices.

• Deeper water safety. Make sure kids can do a combination of back floating and treading water for at least 2 minutes.

Healthy Water Habits for Families

Give your keiki a lifetime of freedom

• Safe entry and exit. Teach them to get in and out of the pool while facing the wall, so they can catch themselves if they slip.

For the Ocean

• Choose a safe entry/exit point. As a family, select a safe spot at each beach with fewer rocks and a gentler shore break for getting in and out of the water.

• Identify a landmark. Ensure everyone picks a large, stationary landmark (like a tree or tall building) to look back at every 30–60 seconds to avoid drifting and confusion.

• Assess conditions. Spend 10–15 minutes observing the wind, swell, and tide before entering the ocean.

For Both

• Take regular water breaks. Ensure everyone takes a break to drink water every 30-60 minutes.

• Wait after eating. Avoid entering the water for 20–30 minutes after eating.

• Blow bubbles properly. Teach everyone to exhale underwater instead of “holding their breath.”

Mental Health Support for Maui’s Keiki RESOURCES Baby + Health

Imagine it’s Sunday night and you find out that your child is struggling with their mental health. You don’t know where to turn, and on Monday morning, you’re calling every therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist and can’t get an appointment for three–six months.

This experience, shared by Anne Brown, President of The Cook Center for Human Connection, is unfortunately all too common. And there are often simple things you can do to support your child and alleviate some of their suffering.

Helping your child through a mental health challenge can feel deeply lonely. You may feel like you have failed as a parent, or ashamed because there is so much stigma around mental health. You might also feel like no one will understand.

“This generation of children is dealing with things that no generation of children has dealt with before at the magnitude that we’re dealing with it,” explains Brown, “and that means that no parents have dealt with it before.”

Sometimes it’s a teacher or other trusted adult in the child’s life who notices the child is struggling with their mental health. Often, even when the struggle is noticed, there is not a clear path for support.

“Schools see your children every day,” says Brown. “Teachers can see changes. There are systems in place to support them, but schools don't have enough mental health workers.” The recommended ratio is one school psychologist for every 500 children, and Hawaii averages one for every 1400. With rising rates of depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and suicidality reported

by the American Academy of Pediatrics, there is urgency in getting families and caregivers the tools to support children who are struggling.

In an effort to fill this gap between the needs families have in supporting these kids and the lack of trained mental health resources, The Hawai'i Department of Health has partnered with the Cook Center for Human Connection to provide an online resource available to every family in the State of Hawaii.

ParentGuidance.org provides an online portal that is easy to access, free, and does not require registration. There are three main sections available:

1. On-demand video courses that range from topics such as understanding your child’s emotional development at different ages (up to age 22), bullying, self care and more.

2. Connect with a parenting coach that will provide support and guidance through a variety of modalities, including bi-weekly phone sessions.

3. “Ask a therapist” allows you to scroll through important questions that therapists are often asked. Answers are given by a trained and licensed mental health provider in a short video format.

These resources will give families in Hawai'i an easy-to-access resource that has the potential to make an impact on the mental health of our keiki. Everyone who cares about a young person is encouraged to go online and see what is available.

Smile! Capturing Kids on Camera

Trying to capture your kids can sometimes feel like herding cats. By following these tips, you can create beautiful portraits of your children that will capture the spirit and joy of childhood.

Get down on their level. To truly capture a child’s world you need to get down to their eye level. This can create a connection and may result in more engaging portraits.

Use natural light. Natural light is your best friend when photographing kids. It’s softer and more flattering than flash. Position them near a window with the light coming onto them or shoot outdoors during the golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset).

Be patient yet ready. Children are unpredictable, so patience is key. Keep your camera ready to capture spontaneous moments. Take many images to ensure you don’t miss that perfect moment; just keep snapping away!

Make it fun. Make the session fun by incorporating toys, games, bubbles, or silly faces. The more relaxed and entertained the child is, the more natural their expressions will be. Sometimes, letting them play and be themselves will get you the best shots. Capture candid moments. While posed shots can be beautiful, candid shots often capture the essence of a child’s personality. Focus on mo -

ments when they are absorbed in an activity, laughing, or running around.

Experiment with angles and composition. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different angles, such as shooting from above or capturing their reflection in water.

Keep sessions short. Kids have short attention spans, so keep the photo sessions brief. Focus on the eyes. The eyes are the window to the soul, especially in portraits. Ensure the eyes are sharp and in focus to draw viewers into the image.

Coordinate outfits. Choose a color palette that complements each other but doesn’t overly match. Neutrals with pops of color or soft pastels work well. Avoid bold patterns, and remember, comfort is key.

Find a location. Find a setting meaningful to your family, whether at home, in the forest, or on the beach.

Get technical. If you’re using your phone, tap on faces to ensure they’re in focus. Portrait mode is great for focusing the image and blurring the background.

Constructive Conversations

Dear Cici is a family resource for accurate informaton about sex and relationships. Email your questions to info@mauifamilymagazine.com.

Dear Cici,

With so much attention on the upcoming election, I’ve noticed people in my family having more debates and sometimes getting into arguments. What's the best way to talk to people with differing views?

Conversations in our current, highly polarized, political climate can be difficult to navigate. Some people will tell you to avoid them altogether to not ruffle anyone's feathers.

While it’s probably best to avoid talking about controversial topics at work, most of us are having these conversations at home, with our families and friends, at parties and social gatherings.

Even if you prefer to keep your opinion to yourself, avoiding these potentially volatile exchanges is sometimes impossible.

Right now many of us are feeling passionate about the issues. The following suggestions may or may not work depending on how “passionate” you are feeling in the moment and there are times when it’s best to just walk away from a highly-charged situation. That said, I want to offer a few ideas.

First, avoid being confrontational. When people feel they are being criticized or attacked it's natural to get defensive and this can quickly lead to an argument. The goal is not to “win” the conversation.

Ask questions. Instead of arguing, try something different. Keep an open mind, cultivate curiosity, and ask questions. It’s surprising what can happen if you engage with someone

instead of argue with them and you may learn something about the other person if you take the time to listen.

Avoid making assumptions. It's easy to categorize or label someone in our minds and assume we know everything about them and what they believe. Instead, try to find some common ground, shared values or concerns that can provide some mutual understanding. Respect their right to their opinion. This is a hard one, especially if we believe from the core of our being that they are wrong; everyone has the right to their views. Allowing for differing opinions is essential, it builds trust and improves communication.

Stay calm. Emotions often cause these conversations to get heated. In a social situation or when people have been drinking things can escalate. Having clear boundaries is important, if the other person cannot engage in a civil conversation you can step away or “agree to disagree.”

It’s not easy to have constructive conversations with people who think differently, but it's a worthwhile endeavor. It's also a great way to model for our kids that we can have friendships and relationships with people despite our differing views.

Cradle of Civilization Loaf

In the culinary world, some ingredients can have a moment and fall out of the limelight. Some ingredients have sustained civilizations and are almost as old as those civilizations themselves! This season, we are going to highlight two ingredients that go back to the cradle of civilization—dates and olive oil. Their superpowers combine to create a moist, sweet (and low refined sugar!) loaf that will be a welcome addition to your holiday baking line up. Here’s why I love dates: Firstly, they are naturally sweet. Second, they are anti-parasitic. The best thing about dates is that they undergo a sort of culinary alchemy—add baking soda and hot water to them and they undergo a caramelization to create intense gorgeous golden color and dulce de leche flavor. Paired with nuts and a few chocolate chips and the kids might even eat it!

Olive oil. Let’s admit that baking with olive oil is all the rage at the moment. Try swapping out your regular oil for a high quality EVOO (that’s code for Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and enjoy the richer mouthfeel and delicate flavor that it imparts.

Add 1 cup boiling water and 1 tsp baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to 2 cups of Medjool dates, pitted and roughly chopped. While that’s soaking get your ingredients together:

• 1 cup coconut sugar

• 1/2 cup EVOO

• 1 egg

• 1 cup flour (almond flour could work if you are GF)

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 1/2 tsp salt

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup nuts of your choice ( walnuts or pecans work well)

• 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Once you have that assembled, take a fork and smoosh (yes that’s a technical word :) the dates down to combine and soften, then add to the other ingredients.

Pour into a well lubricated loaf pan or cake pan. Bake at 370º for 25–30 minutes.

Festive Christmas Tree Centerpieces

Get into the holiday spirit making these beautiful festive 3D Christmas trees. It’s a creative family project or a fantastic kids' craft for a holiday party. Older children can easily complete the craft on their own, while younger ones will enjoy the experience with just a bit of help. It's a wonderful way to bring everyone together and add a personalized touch to your seasonal decor.

Simple craft materials you probably have on hand

• Paper or cardstock for template

• Recycled corrugated cardboard

• Marker

• Utility knife or X-acto knife

• Hot glue gun

• Craft glue (not Elmers)

• Paint (tempera paint, or acrylic paint)

• Assorted buttons and decorative bits

Instructions (If prepping the trees for a party craft do steps 1–4 in advance)

1. Make a template. First, create your template by drawing a simple Christmas tree shape on your paper or cardstock. Cut it out and either fold or cut it in half along the center line. You can make the trees whatever size you want.

2. Trace the trees. Next, trace your template onto sturdy, corrugated cardboard (great way to recycle those Amazon boxes). You’ll want

one full tree and two half trees for each 3D Christmas tree you make.

3. Cut the tree shapes. Use the utility knife to cut out the cardboard tree shapes. (Adults only, of course. And if you’ve never heard of electric scissors, check them out - game changer!)

4. Glue the trees together. Use a hot glue gun to glue the half trees to the center of each side of the full cardboard tree.

5. Time to paint! Paint your new 3D cardboard trees green or any color you desire. Metalic paints look amazing!

6. Add the bling! Decorate your tree! The paint will dry quickly, bring out your buttons, gems, glitter, pom poms or whatever craft materials you have. Glue on craft materials using hot glue gun or craft glue.
