Our Keiki
Finding
Our Place
Story by Kalia Kelmenson & Photo by Daniel Sullivan
While summer days linger, offering long stretches of light and heat, it is summer nights that offer an opportunity to both cool down and explore the magnificent and awe-inspiring starry skies.
Mary Kawena Pukui’s ‘Ōlelo No‘eau: Hawaiian Proverbs and Poetical Sayings, (Bishop Museum Press 1983) shares the following proverb:
O na hōkū no na kiu o ka lani. The stars are the eyes of heaven.
From wherever you are in the world, you can look up and see the stars and those stars will be shining down on you. For the people of Polynesia, stars make for more than a pleasant sightseeing expedition. They are, in fact, an essential part of how they navigate through the waters on a voyaging canoe.
Navigation for Polynesians is inextricably linked to the night sky, along with the clouds and patterns found in the ocean. A deep knowledge of the tapestry and placement of the stars is required to know which direction the canoe is headed.
This ancient art of navigation was nearly lost, but has found new life in recent years. Nainoa Thompson, master navigator of the voyaging canoe Hōkūle‘a has become a prominent voice in the importance of preserving this ancient form of navigation. Thompson and others have shared the mana‘o (knowledge) that was taught to them, and an entire generation of navigators is coming into their own.
One of this new generation of wayfinders on Maui is Kala Tanaka. She is the education director for Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua (huiowaa.org), is a kumu (teacher) for their junior voyaging program, and she offers star navigation presentations around the island. She is a vibrant source of knowledge so keep an eye out for ways to learn from her.
Stars and planets connect us both to the natural world and our sense of place, a sense of where we are headed.
How to connect with the stars this summer:
• Get as far as you can from artificial light sources. The darker the area, the more stars you can see.
• Get closer to the stars. Head upcountry for a stargazing expedition. See if you can identify some of the major constellations, and notice how they shift in the night sky over the course of the summer.
• Keep an eye out for the Perseid meteor shower July 14–August 24. Peak viewing can be expected around August 12–13, 2024.
Kalia Kelmenson helps female leaders live with purpose and passion without losing themselves along the way. She grew up on Maui and returned home to raise her keiki, who are now young adults. She is the creator of The Salt in Us and founder of Maui Mind and Body. mauimindandbody.com

INDEPENDENT TODDLERS Our Keiki
Open-Ended Play
BY TARA VELLELLA MA, BCBA
In the world of toddlerhood, every day is an adventure filled with wonder and exploration. As parents, we know these humans can bring both the sweetest moments and a few notso-sweet meltdowns—especially when it's time for you to get things done. Let’s dive into something that will not only nurture your keiki's development but also provide precious moments of calm you've been yearning for. Play is the cornerstone of your keiki's growth, offering not just joy but also essential developmental milestones. We've all been there, surrounded by the constant touch of little hands, yearning for a moment of peace, quiet and space from feeling like you have to constantly entertain. So, what can you do?
The key is in transforming that want into a teachable moment with open-ended play.
Rather than simply wishing your toddler would give you space, let's guide your keiki on a path to discovering the joy of independent play. As they immerse themselves in independent play, you'll find those much-needed moments for yourself, creating a balance in your parenting journey.
What is open-ended play and what does it look like? Imagine sensory bins transforming into endless worlds and stickers finding a home on wax paper or board books. Building blocks become the architects of your toddler's imagination and fun miniature worlds with
Swan Lake
Saturday, June 1–Sunday, June 2
Join us at Seabury Hall’s ‘A‘ali‘ikuhonua Creative Arts Center as Alexander Academy Performing Company (AAPC) presents Tchaikovsky’s timeless masterpiece, Swan Lake, from June 1st to June 2nd. Across four mesmerizing performances, over 200 student dancers ages 3 to adult will showcase their exceptional talent and skill. “Swan Lake is the most famous classical ballet for a very good reason, Tchaikovsky’s music. The score inspires the dancers to push their storytelling abilities using ballet as a vocabulary, transporting the audience to a fantasy world of royalty, magic, love, betrayal, and
cars, trucks, and figurines. Open-ended play doesn’t have a concrete ending to it like a puzzle. Provide your toddler with 2-3 of their favorite open-ended activities and let them choose. It's an effective way to encourage autonomy and decision-making. As your keiki plays, gently fade back your lead and presence, allowing them to take the lead. Watch as they weave their tales and create their own worlds.
Now it’s your turn: May your days be filled with joy, creativity, and a touch of well-deserved peace. Enjoy those precious moments for yourself, finding support in the newfound independence you've taught.

Going Out: Inside the Montessori Classroom and Elsewhere
BY ERIC DUSTMAN
Going out experiences provide immeasurable benefit to the child. In fact, as suggested by Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, “An environment-based education movement-at all levels of education-- will help students realize that school isn’t supposed to be a polite form of incarnation, but a portal to the wider world.” This idea of integrating experiences for children to engage with nature while in school offers meaningful learning about ideas first introduced in the classroom.
Field trips for the sake of fulfilling these types of childhood schooling experiences do provide value. They simply ensure that children move, that children engage socially in ways that exist outside the regular classroom environment, and that children grow their emotional intelligence because field trips place the classroom in new and often unfamiliar environments. When directly related to past and present learning that takes place in the school classroom, field trips and going out experiences engage children in activities that bring theory to life, making it tangible, and helping to shape their world view.
In one instance, students from Montessori School of Maui found themselves atop Haleakalā taking action to help preserve the environment critical to silversword survival. Learning first inside the classroom about biomes, habitats, and the many microclimates that exist on Maui, the students stepped
out and into one climate specific to the silversword—the unique plant that lives only on our beautiful volcano. The experience lent much to our students as they learned to better understand the role they play in stewarding care of their environment, not only those that are most easily accessed but also those located elsewhere.
Assuredly, many schools take advantage to create going out experiences for their students. Not only are these fun and afford flexibility toward normal school routines, they provide intellectual, social, and emotional growth opportunities to students. According to research evidence delivered by Maria Montessori, she showed that learning is didactic. “Growth comes from activity, not [only] from intellectual understanding.” This should be encouraging for teachers who seek to provide experiences that enhance and provide relevance to the curriculum taught in the classroom, and the experiences they help their students gain while engaging in daily life.

How to Help Your Child Prepare for Changes
BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
Change can be both exciting and tricky! You may be moving, going to a new school, trying a new afters chool activity, taking a trip or having guests over. Consistency and predictability provide the foundation for your child to feel safe and secure. So giving your child preparation for an upcoming change allows them to adjust and build their emotional regulation skills in a supported way. Change is taxing, even when it is something fun, and some kids have a harder time than others with transitions to something new.
Here are some tips for helping to prepare your child for change:
• Let them know a change is coming up in advance; the bigger the change, the earlier you want to start this conversation
• Preview the change- visit the new house or school, or print photos of an upcoming trip destination
• Open up the conversation to questions from your child- you will then get to see how the upcoming change is landing for your child emotionally and if they have worries, excitement or upset
• Let them know you are so happy they can tell you their feelings
• Give them more details about the change and create a sequence on paper/whiteboard so they can see how many days (months) until the change is happening
• Talk explicitly about what they think will be easy about the change and what they think will be tricky and repeat what they have said, so your child feels you understand them
• Start to problem-solve together how to help the tricky parts can go more smoothly; this teaches your child how to plan for selfsoothing
• Consider making a ‘menu’ with your child of photos of their self-soothing activities/items; this may include a favorite stuffy, favorite snacks, snuggles with mom or dad, favorite music, calming games, breathing, etc.
• Plan physical activities before and during the ‘change’ so your child has a physical outlet for their big emotions, whether excitement, worry, or upset Change creates the opportunity for you to support your child’s skills in preparing for something new. You then help your child to build important emotional regulation skills including noticing how they feel, verbalizing feelings, planning for an upcoming change, and preparing for the need to self-calm using specific strategies that work for them. Amazing.

Summer Reading Challenge
Reading has great benefits—it strengthens reading skills in kids, and teens and adults can learn new things and reduce stress.
Reading also supports memory and mental engagement, which contributes positively to our brain health. Foster your child’s love of reading with the following tips, provided by Hawai'i State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich: Let children pick their own books. Kids are more likely to read books they like. Do they like animals, robots, or plants? Giving children choice in their book selection can allow them to explore their curiosities.
Check out graphic novels. Many children love the illustrations and graphic novels are available at a variety of reading levels.
Be a reader yourself! Pick up a book and your child will follow your example.
Read aloud as a family. Reading aloud and sharing stories is a wonderful family time activity. Make reading part of your routine. Read at breakfast, bath time, bed time, or listen to a book while in the car or riding the bus. Introduce your kids early to the public library and open a world of possibilities that are always available to them.
Ask your local librarian for recommendations! We’re here to inspire curiosity and help your family read, learn and connect. Ask us!
This summer, readers of all ages will be invited to enjoy the rich and varied stories that shape our community as part of the Hawai'i State Public Library System’s annual Summer Reading Challenge, E Heluhelu Kākou; Mo‘olelo, which begins June 1. While plans are still in process for this year’s event, typically participants in the Summer Reaching Challenge can reap incentives as they reach reading milestones. Here’s how it works:
In May, plan to register online or by visiting your local library.
• Start reading on June 1.
• Read at least one hour per week.
• Log your reading minutes using the Beanstack app or librarieshawaii.beanstack.org.
• Keep it up until the end of July.
Start planning now to escape the summer heat and visit local branches to browse and borrow materials or use their free Wi-Fi and public computers.
More details will be published online as they become available. The libary's digital doors are always open at librarieshawaii.org. With just a library card, you can download audio and e-books, stream movies, learn a language, read The New York Times, and more!

Seemingly Insignificant Moments
BY HALEY CELESTE MILLER
“We do not remember days, we remember moments. - Cesare Pavese
I once read how time feels like it can last forever as a child because we live in a state of wonder and awe. We are completely immersed in the moment and lose sight of anything that is not within our line of sight. Our imagination takes us on adventures, invites creativity and we get lost playing for hours outside doing nothing and everything.
As we grow up, the days fade into months and months into years as life moves on. Our time is filled to the brim with our career path, parenting, bills, errands, relationships, cooking meals, sports games, and caring for our home. Our mental space is taken over by goals we set and the never-ending to-do’s that don’t get done. The busier we are, the more accomplished we feel. But in the meantime, we stop observing, we stop living in the present, and miss all that makes living beautiful. Small seemingly insignificant moments. It’s as simple as having a dance party, stopping to witness your child fully immersed in the moment, mixing pancake batter, and having a race. It’s not profound or life-changing, but it is fleeting. It's a feeling that fills your heart with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Where you pause to truly feel the moment, to live, embrace, and dissolve the outside world to exist solely there. The practice of gratitude, I believe, is the gateway to presence.
Here are three seemingly insignificant ways you can practice gratitude even when life is overflowing with busyness.
Simply say thank you. Randomly, for no reason at all, when the house is messy, the sink is full of dishes, you have to chauffeur your kids, say thank you. What you’ll begin to notice is more things to be thankful for come into view.
Have a 30-second dance party. Tony Robbins says, “Change your physiology, change your life.” Have you ever got up to grab something from a sitting down position and stood there clueless about what you needed to get? It’s because our physiological state directly impacts the chemicals and neural activity in our brains, which then affects our mental and emotional state.
Choose a gratitude word that you hear repetitively throughout the day. “Mom” is used in my household a minimum of a hundred times a day and I have attached it with one thing to be grateful for in that single moment.
Life is many things, but a beautiful, slow life is captured in the small seemingly insignificant moments that fill your soul with gratitude.
Raised in Lāhainā, Haley Celeste Miller is passionate about motherhood, essential oils and working towards their family dream to fish in every country that touches the ocean.

Meeting life’s challenges requires tool that help us learn, grow, and thrive. One of the most potent “medicines” we can offer our little ones, tweens, and teens is the tool of mindfulness. Distractions can remove our focus from our internal state and instead center our attention on external circumstances and events that are often out of our control. Over time, this can wear down on a child’s inner peace and joy. External pressures and expectations can lead to stress, and while kids may not be familiar with the concept of stress, they can still experience what it feels like without giving it a label or name.
Mindfulness, a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, can help both our keiki and ourselves master the mind, maintain our inner peace, and fully immerse ourselves in the art of life.
Research shows that kids who participate in mindfulness practices such as meditation and mindful movement (i.e., yoga, tai chi, breathwork) demonstrate improved mental health, resilience to negative emotions, and better academic performance. Not only will mindful movement strengthen the physical body, but it also offers multi-sensory input, increases self-esteem and self-worth, which can reduce negative behaviors, and enhances attention, concentration, and memory.
Combining the practice of mindfulness with movement further engrains these thought patterns. Sensory- and motor-based learning is
by Tabitha Tatum
also fun, which naturally encourages your child to develop the intrinsic motivation to return to these activities.
So how do we begin? Start small! To avoid overwhelm and decision fatigue, choose a set time each day to incorporate a mindfulness technique into your family’s routine. This could be completing 4-6 grounding yoga poses, such as child’s pose, downward dog, and tree pose, before bedtime, or listening to a 5–10 minute meditation app on the way to school or the beach.
If transitions are tricky for your child, consider creating a portable “calm kit” with several strategies that will promote deep breathing—think bubbles, balloons, pinwheels, etc. Encourage your child to inhale through their nose (“smell the flower”) for a count of 3–5 and exhale through their mouth (“blow out the candle”) for a count of 4–7. Don’t forget to model and practice with your child; this will help them learn and then you reap the benefits, too!
Introducing our young ones to mindfulness offers them a variety of tools they can use for the rest of their lives. By having a strong foundation and toolkit, these preventative techniques help families to cope with the inevitable challenges that life presents.

Wellness practices, both holistic and preventative, have evolved over time. Did you know that wellness can be traced back to ancient Indian and Chinese traditions from 3000–1500 B.C.? Today, wellness has evolved into a thriving movement of healthy-living, self-help, self-care, fitness, nutrition, and spiritual practices.
Wellness is the “active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health” (Global Wellness Institute). Holistic health is the care of your whole being, your physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs. It's rooted in the understanding that these dimensions affect a person’s overall health, and being unwell in one can affect our health in others.
The dimensions of wellness include:
• Social wellness - Connecting with others, finding community, and establishing support networks.
• Emotional wellness - Developing ways to cope with stressors and asking for help.
• Environmental wellness - Spending time in nature and other places, including spaces with others, that are pleasant.
Caring for the Whole You
BY FAMILY HUI HAWAI`I
• Physical wellness - Caring for your body to maintain good health now and in the future.
• Mental wellness - A state of mental well-being and belief that you can be resilient.
• Spiritual wellness - Searching for a higher meaning and purpose in life.
Family Hui Hawai‘i
We offer many ways to explore the different dimensions of wellness. Our in-person Neighborhood Hui (groups) led by Parent Leaders offer families with young keiki weekly meetings in their community, for example, at a park like Giggle Hill, Ha‘ikū. Parents and caregivers share, connect and support one another through their parenting experiences and often find that they are on the same journey together. Virtual options to connect are offered through our talk story Parent Cafes, and in Mindful Mondays and Wellness Wednesdays in Wellness Hui to talk, learn yoga, breathwork and guided meditation techniques.
Through community partnerships we offer a variety of family-friendly experiences. For postpartum moms, we offer Hui through our Mama+Baby Yoga and Walking & Baby Wearing sessions. Families of all ages can join our Blue Zones Walking Moai to meet and walk for an hour once a week and much more. Navigating Anxiety
BY HANNAH FREED
In today's uncertain world, an increasing number of people are grappling with anxiety, characterized by feelings of nervousness, fear, and worry. When we find ourselves in a defensive state, it profoundly affects our emotions, thoughts, and connections with others. This defensive stance not only impacts our overall well-being but also triggers our nervous system's fight, flight, or freeze response.
In this heightened state of defense, individuals may exhibit various symptoms such as rigidity, disorganization, irritability, and feelings of being overwhelmed or unsafe. They may struggle with accepting limits or boundaries, experience digestive and sleep disturbances, and engage in obsessive or compulsive behaviors.
However, when we perceive the world as safe, we can connect and engage more effectively and enjoyably with our surroundings and with those around us. This sense of safety fosters resilience, calmness, and attentiveness, enabling us to think logically and creatively. It empowers us to learn, socially connect, and embrace flexibility and acceptance, ultimately leading to improved overall well-being, stamina, digestion, restful sleep and a more joy-filled life.
Tips to Decrease Anxiety
• Acknowledge and validate fears and feelings. You and your child need to feel heard and respected.
• Have regular contact with nature. This helps ground us, fostering a sense of inner peace and calm.
• Spend time with your pet. Pets provide companionship and support. They can help us be more active and get us outside in fresh air. Holding and snuggling our pets elevates our levels of serotonin and dopamine, helping us feel calm and relaxed. Pets also give us structure and routine.
• Have a healthy diet. Avoiding processed foods and foods high in sugar helps our bodies experience fewer highs and lows of blood sugar and reduces inflammation throughout the body and brain, which can contribute to anxiety.
• Get proper amounts of sleep. Lack of sleep increases cortisol, which can increase anxiety.
• Exercise. Movement and exercise of your body increases feel-good hormones and enhance your mood.
• Quiet activity. Any individual activity such as coloring, doodling, painting, knitting, crocheting, journaling, reading, etc. This can help us get into a meditative and calming state.
• Massage. Massage helps work out tension in our muscles and can help us relax.
• Meditate or belly breathing. Focus on slow breathing. This helps calm the nervous system and can improve our attention and mood. If you’re feeling anxious and want to calm down, concentrate on your exhale. If you’re feeling stuck and want to become more alert, focus on your inhale.
• Routines. Implement daily, weekly, monthly and annual rhythms, seasons, festivals and celebrations. Predictable and repetitive routines are calming and help reduce anxiety.
• Humor. Laughter is a great form of stress relief.

Stay Safe While Staying Active This Summer
BY DR. VIJAK AYASANONDA, EMERGENCY MEDICINE PHYSICIAN
AND ASSOCIATE MEDICAL DIRECTOR FOR EMERGENT MEDICAL ASSOCIATES, MAUI MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER
Whether your child loves team sports, being in nature, or just playing with their friends, staying active is important for their physical and mental health. You can help your keiki enjoy some physical activity and avoid visits to the ER this summer by putting safety first and following these tips.
1. Stay safe in the water. Make sure a responsible adult is supervising water time, and never leave children unattended around water. Know your child’s abilities and limits in the ocean, and always check conditions before hitting the waves. Swim at beaches with lifeguards and make sure keiki are wearing a properly fitted life vest if boating or kayaking. Finally, teach your kids to swim to build confidence in the water.
2. Use safety gear. Teach kids to protect their heads by always wearing a helmet during activities like bike riding, skateboarding, or riding a scooter. Make sure helmets and other safety gear fit properly, adjusting or sizing up as your child grows. And set a good example by always wearing a helmet yourself.
3. Skip ATVs. The AAP recommends that children under the age of 16 not ride or operate ATVs, due to the risk of serious injury or death. However, if you do allow your child to use ATVs, reduce the risk by making sure they only use vehicles that are an appropriate size. The vast majority of deaths occur in children
operating adult-sized ATVs. Stick to one person per vehicle, and of course, always have your child wear a helmet.
4. Never skip seatbelts and car seats. Before you rev up for summer fun, remember: seatbelts on, car seats in, and stay inside the car where it's safest. It is incredibly important for both adults and keiki to wear seatbelts and for younger kids to be secured in the right car seat for their size. Also, avoid riding in the back of trucks. Even if it seems like fun, it's really dangerous because you are left completely unprotected; even a minor car accident can cause serious injuries.
5. Keep it cool. Children are more susceptible to dehydration and heat-related illnesses so make sure keiki stay hydrated with plenty of water, and take regular breaks to cool off when playing in the hot sun. Wear sunscreen and reapply often and after swimming. This summer, help your keiki make memories -- not injuries! By teaching safety, and practicing it yourself, you can keep kids safe while staying active all summer long.

PEOPLE. COMMUNITY. EXCELLENCE.
An Extra Dose of Hope
BY KALIA KELMENSON
When despair seems to be getting the upper hand, offer yourself a serving of hope.
Our bodies are designed to move. We know that getting consistent movement is a vital part of supporting a healthy body, mood, and mind in both children and adults. Yet modern life seems to be shifting us in the direction of less movement, rather than more.
We all have the power, however, about how we spend our days. This includes how much, or how little, we choose to move our bodies, both as individuals and as families. The lure of screens and virtual reality can be a barrier to getting outside and moving the way our bodies are meant to move.
The list of reasons to move is long, from mental health to physical health, including supporting better sleep. In the last few years, researchers have discovered a protein that is released into the blood by the contraction of muscles. These proteins, known as myokines, travel across the blood-brain barrier. Once in the brain, they have
the power to increase motivation, enhance your ability to learn, elevate your mood, and protect you brain from the effects of aging.
Myokines have become more commonly known as “hope molecules” for the ways they benefit the brain, and who doesn’t need more access to hope?
All of these benefits are available without any fancy routines or complicated machinery. They simply require that you contract your muscles, which can be done with any form of movement. Finding new and different ways to move will also stimulate more muscle fibers to contract. More muscle fibers contracting means more hope molecules are released into your blood.
Ideas for releasing hope molecules:
• Visit your local playground. Instead of just watching the kids play, get involved yourself: swing from the monkey bars, climb up the ladders, ride down the slide, and crawl through the tunnels.
• At the beach: take a walk instead of laying on a towel, dive through the waves, dig a hole that will fill with water.
• Find a favorite trail and visit it often, inviting friends and loved ones to join you.
The more consistent your are with movement, the more you will be supplying a steady drip of hope to your brain.

It's summer! Longer days mean more time for fun. There are more potlucks and barbecues on the beach. And a time for good food and good fun for the entire ‘ohana. And the best part about living on Maui is a staycation right here on the Valley Isle to support our economy and local families.
Sweet Insights
Here are some simple summer tips to help make sure you and your keiki enjoy the best that summer has to offer without compromising your smiles:
• Make smart, healthy choices about the snacks you offer keiki so they can maintain strong teeth. Consider offering your children alternative snacks such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
Here’s why: Sugar that lingers on your children’s teeth feed bacteria that eventually erode the enamel of their teeth and that leads to cavities. Sticky, gummy candies such as caramels and taffy can get stuck on their teeth and are difficult to remove. Hard candies such as lollipops take a while to
The Key to Healthy Summer Smiles
dissolve. Sour candies contain acid that erode the enamel on teeth. Sugar-free gum help to reduce acids and bacteria after eating candy.
• Instead of juice, soda or a shave ice that contain sugar, consider providing water for your keiki to cool off and stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months.
Back to Basics
Teaching your child about healthy eating habits provides a lifetime of good health and a lifetime of healthy smiles. This summer, return to the basics of dental health. Be sure children floss their teeth every day, brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and during the summer, be sure to take the time to make a dentist appointment.

The Ocean is Calling
by Haley Celeste Miller
“I made my children learn the ways of the ocean— so they would always have a home to go to, long after I am gone.”
-Haley Celeste Miller
Throughout time, people have been known to live, fight, and die for land. It is an honor and privilege to have a home to call your own. Many save for lifetimes and sacrifice time with their families to afford that privilege. It's a legacy that can be gifted for generations.
It was my family's dream until the Lāhainā wildfire wiped out seven generations of our homes and changed the course of our lives. Overnight, what once felt like such an honor to own a small slice of land, now made me question, how important is it really? Will it matter that we gave years to having that opportunity, pouring love, our prayers, and our time into nurturing our land? Will our great, great grandchildren know and hold tight to our vision of today or will it be a whisper in the wind, a once upon a time?

‘Ohana
All
With our lives altered, our hearts broken and our bodies in shock, we went to the only place left that made sense: the ocean, our home. In that moment I realized that although we had lost everything, we gained more than we could have ever imagined.
Since I was a little girl, the ocean was my sanctuary. It was a place that I ran to when life felt overwhelming. I would surf from morning to night just to feel the depths of its beauty. My problems didn’t seem so big after spending time near the waves. It felt so powerful, so much bigger than me—wiser, stronger, and always humbled me deeply.
When I had children, the ocean became their teacher. We live by the quote, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” The ocean allowed my children to become fishermen and surfers. It fed our family most days of the
week which in turn offered humility, respect, gratitude, and nourishment. We learned to work with the ocean’s tides and moons and take care of her surroundings. The questions I posed earlier were answered. Our legacy is teaching our children to respectfully cultivate the many facets of the ocean while reminding them to be stewards and protectors. There’s no ownership, no body of water to be passed down, but the opportunity to teach them about the ocean will be passed on for generations to come. It is our family's legacy. Our home.
Raised in Lāhainā, Haley Celeste Miller is passionate about motherhood, essential oils and working towards their family dream to fish in every country that touches the ocean.

MAKE NEW FRIENDS
After the blissful, albeit, exhausting weeks of caring for a newborn pass, parents may start craving a social life for themselves and their new bundle of joy. As new parents, transitioning into different social circles can feel daunting. When you’re ready to make new connections beyond what’s between your home’s walls, while also bonding with your child, here are a few ideas.
Express Yourself

Ultimate Air hosts a toddler time from 10am to noon on Monday, Friday, and Saturday. This is not only a safe time for your toddler to jump, but it’s also a great time for them (and guardian!) to meet friends. If you want to share your love for soccer, Vertical Sports offers a mommy and me soccer class. Visiting any of the county parks is also a great way to bring your toddler outdoors and meet friends along the way.
Storytime
Storytimes are held throughout the county’s libraries and are a perfect introduction to an educational setting for toddlers. Kids gather to quietly listen, interact with the librarian, and complete a themed craft. Be sure to pick ageappropriate storytimes and other events on librarieshawaii.org. Go weekly and you’ll soon recognize the regulars that may become your bestie for life.

Body Image
Dear Cici is a family resource for accurate informaton about sex and relationships. Email your questions to info@mauifamilymagazine.com.
Dear Cici,
I'm starting to see signs in my preteen being critical of herself and her body. I am always telling her she's beautiful, but she doesn't believe me. How can I support her?
Great question. Concerns about how body image issues are impacting our kids are a growing topic among parents and even legislators. Internalized ideals regarding body image, media/social media influences, and messages from family and friends can all impact how young people think about their appearance.
Statistically, one out of three teens report feeling unsatisfied with their bodies/appearance; this is concerning because individuals experiencing body dissatisfaction can be at risk for increased rates of depression, anxiety, and self-harming behaviors. Problems with negative body image affect boys as well as girls and can begin as early as elementary school.
Many of the influences on our kids are beyond our control, but there are some things you can do to help support your child and build resilience:
Listen to your teen and validate their experience; pretending that the pressure to be thin, gorgeous, and “hot” doesn’t exist or that a person’s appearance is not related to who they are could backfire and leave your teen to believe you are out of touch. It’s important to acknowledge that the pressures they feel are real and they are not alone; most of us wrestle with mixed feelings about our bodies and appearance throughout our lives.
Parents and family can have a big influence on how teens see themselves. Consider the language you use when talking about your
own body; If you make negative comments about your appearance or worry aloud about what you're eating, you are teaching your teen to be self-critical and potentially develop unhealthy eating habits.
Encourage your teen to be physically active, play sports, and move their body; not only does exercise boost the mood and release stress and anxiety, it reminds us that having a strong healthy body feels amazing and is useful for so much more than just looking cute.
Be aware of the potential impact of media/ social media on your teen’s self-image.
Although not all young people struggle with social media, there is evidence that some teens are more susceptible to feelings of anxiety and depression resulting from constant exposure to images and content that push unrealistic lifestyle/beauty standards. Talk with your teen about their experience using social media and the ways in which it influences their own self-image.
Modeling body acceptance, healthy eating habits and physical activity are a few of the ways parents can help their teens to feel happy with their own bodies. As always, maintaining open communication is key. Talk with your teen, empathize with what they're going through and remind them that physical appearance is only one aspect of who they are.

More than Marine Life: Cultural & Artistic Experiences
Offered at Maui Ocean Center
As keiki make their way up the stairs and out of Maui Ocean Center’s Turtle Lagoon, a wooden box filled with colorful 'ukuleles often catches their eye.
“We end up playing the ABCs, ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and the ‘Wheels on the Bus’,” said Arlie-Avery Asiu, who teaches free 'ukulele lessons three times a week at the aquarium. “It’s so cool for the parents to see their kids, even if they can’t play, just to see them strumming along.”
Whether it’s playing the 'uke or creating a piece of original art with a printing press, guests at Maui Ocean Center are offered a variety of cultural and artistic experiences.
Hex Press Maui sets up its mobile printmaking studio twice a week at the aquarium. They’ve created custom t-shirts for several Maui Ocean Center events, including the popular “Sharks After Dark” date nights.
This year, Hex Press has given guests the opportunity to create an ocean-themed piece of art by tracing a marine life illustration — a hammerhead shark, seahorse and unicorn fish, just to name a few — onto a piece of foam and then printing it on a postcard-size piece of watercolor paper.
“People love it. Usually, people haven’t used a printing press before,” said Tia Brady, who co-owns Hex Press and is the Print Studio Manager at the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao. “Grown-ups get just as much out of it as the kids do.”
Another art project that’s offered each week is kapa making. Plus, there’s wood carving demonstrations and coconut palm weaving.
Guests can also talk story with Gregory “Gigi” Gomes as he handcrafts traditional Hawaiian fishing nets.
“This is a dying art,” Gomes said, noting that the type of net depends on the species of fish being caught.
“Our cultural practitioners in the ‘Hawaiians and the Sea’ exhibit really add to the story we’re telling as they bring an essential historical component,” said Tiara Fernandez, the aquarium’s education director.
Fernandez said one of the most popular keiki activities in the park is a Hawaiian petroglyph activity in which children are given a “Ki‘i Pohaku Passport.”
There are 12 replicas of ki‘i pohaku — centuriesold Hawaiian rock carvings — throughout Maui Ocean Center. These etchings display petroglyphs along with Hawaiian words for “surfer,” “canoe” and “fish,” among others.
“As long as the weather is not too windy or rainy, we have a special imprinting tool at each station to rub an image of the ki‘i pohaku,” Fernandez said. “It’s not only fun, but educational for the whole ‘ohana.”

‘Ohana ‘ONO RECIPES

Build a
Smoothie
by Maja Liotta
Who doesn’t love a sneaky way to give kids more servings of their fruits and veggies? Moms and dads can be radical alchemists when it comes to nourishing our brood. Smoothies are what I call a “gateway” health food. These heat-beating and nutrient-dense beverages will make wild-colored milk mustaches a trend.
Here are some user-friendly smoothie hacks to check out:
Always add two dates and a quarter lemon with the rind (Trust me on this.) Remove the seeds but keep the rind. Full citrus rinds contain limonene which is a powerful anti-cancer component. Dates are nature’s little powerhouse of deliciousness and nutrition. Dried goji berries or dried figs work as well. The sweet and sour of this combo will neutralize any funk from any not-so-delicious components that you try to sneak in there.
Frozen bananas. Here in Hawai'i, when I’ve got a couple of bags full of ripe apple bananas in my freezer, I feel like I’m ready for an apocalypse. Probably the equivalent of a freezer loaded with processed elk in Colorado, but island style. Quality salt. Yep! Strange right? Just a pinch, nothing crazy, will bring out all the good flavors in your blend.
Diversity. Raw cacao is a great source of magnesium. Add nut butters for a plant-sourced protein punch and you can’t go wrong with some hempseed for the same reason.
Extracts. Keep a little stash of extracts on hand to really jazz things up flavor-wise. Peppermint, almond extract, vanilla, and citrus essential oils are great. Just make sure they are food grade/ therapeutic grade.
Peppermint Matcha Smoothie
Ingredients
• 1 cup ice
• 2 frozen bananas
• 1 tsp good quality matcha
• 2 cups oat/nut/ or regular milk
• Tiny splash of peppermint extract
• Couple sprigs of fresh mint
• 1/4 tsp good salt
Directions
Blend and enjoy! It's like a shamrock shake gone good.

Summer Fun with Homemade Playdough!
BY TASHA COMPOS
Playdough is fantastic for sensory play and learning, and it’s just plain FUN! Shaping the dough into a ball or making a snake stimulates creativity. Squeezing, pinching, and pulling movements also strengthen hand muscles and develop fine motor skills. Adding some basic tools or toys to the activity can spark the imagination.
What supplies do you need?
• Easy homemade playdough (see recipe below)
• Tools for cutting, shaping, and making patterns – for example, plastic knives, forks, rolling pins, cookie cutters, scissors
• Things for imaginative play – for example, plastic animals, toy cars, natural objects like rocks, sticks, shells, or baking tools like muffin trays
• Want to add more fun…add a dash of glitter or beads
Ideas for engaging with playdough
• Let your child experiment.
• Show your child how to roll, stretch, and flatten.
• Talk about how the playdough looks, feels, and smells.
• Find objects to use for making patterns, like a fork to make dots, a shell, or tracks with toy car wheels.
• Encourage imaginative play with muffin trays and baking tools- decorate your pretend cake with bead “sprinkles” and top it with a candle.
• Give your child plastic animals to use with the playdough.
Tips for playing with playdough
• You can play with playdough anywhere, but it’s best to sit at a table for a solid work surface and to keep things from getting too messy.
• Use a plastic mat or cookie sheet to protect surfaces and contain the fun.
ARTLab Maui’s Favorite Playdough Recipe
This super simple recipe is all-natural and takes just minutes to make. Kids love to help measure, pour, and mix the ingredients. Your dough will last about a month when stored in an airtight container in the fridge. If it seems to dry out, just refresh with a little warm water.
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 1/2 cup salt
• 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
• 1 to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
• Gel food coloring (optional)
• Essential oil for scent (optional)
Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar, and oil in a large mixing bowl. Add food coloring to the boiling water and then into the dry ingredients. Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough. Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it until all of the stickiness has gone. If it remains sticky then add a pinch more flour until just right.
