Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips Create a “You Color My World” Valentine Valentine’s Day brings such sweet memories... making a mailbox out of a shoebox to receive all the fun, and often times, yummy treats and cards from classmates, as well as taking the time to pick the perfect card for that special person in class. Valentine’s is meant to send a little love someone’s way. Here’s an easy and fun way to make a Valentine for the entire class, all while reusing and recycling! We bet you have more than a few pieces of broken crayons laying around. Not sure how or why so many crayons get broken but we’ve all got that bin of crayon scraps. Put them to good use by making cute Valentine’s for your child’s classmates. The How-To: Remove all of the paper around the crayons and break them into tiny bits. Once broken up, place the pieces into a silicon cookie tray - use a fun mold such as a heart. You can fill each shape up with the same color or mix it up. Let the kids have fun with this. Fill to the top, as the crayons will melt down.
Once your oven is heated to 250 degrees, put the silicon mold onto a cookie sheet and pop it into the oven for about 10-12 minutes. Keep an eye on the crayons and remove them from the oven once they’re all melted down. Let the hearts cool really well. This may take some time. Once completely cooled, pop them out of the mold. You can place the crayon heart on a piece of cardstock and either write or print out cute messages on them, such as “You color my world.” This is sure to be a fun Valentine to make and receive! Our Keiki ACTIVITIES
Easter Activities to Enjoy with Your Keiki
H
idden eggs, yummy chocolate, and baskets full of treats...Easter is awesome! Here are a few fun ways to make the traditional Easter activities even more fun! Easter Egg Hunt on the Beach Have an Easter egg hunt on the beach! While the kids play in the water, have the parents hide plastic eggs around the beach. Set parameters so everyone knows not to go too far. Have the adults place them in the cooler, in a hole in the sand, on the beach chair, or wherever. Just have fun with it!
Once ready, let the kids use a sand bucket as their baskets. Let them run around to find the plastic Easter eggs. Tips! Be sure to pick up all of the eggs at the end, no one wants plastic left on our beaches. Also, don’t fill the eggs with chocolate, that could make for a gooey mess in the hot sun. Coloring Eggs & Other Fun Stuff Why should Easter eggs get all the coloring fun? Have a fun pancake coloring bar this Easter. Here’s the how to: 1. Make your pancake mix as you usually would. 2. Pour a little bit of the batter into different bowls or add the batter to bottles so that you can then squeeze the batter out into the pan. 3. Add food coloring into the batter—mix just a little to make them more pastel. 4. Cook the pancakes as you usually would. Let the kids add “decorations” such as whipped cream or fruit. Eat and enjoy! Our Keiki CRITICAL THINKING
Improve Your Child’s Critical Thinking Skills “If it’s on the internet, it must be true.” Adults say this tongue in cheek. But for kids, learning to distinguish reliable from unreliable sources is one reason critical thinking skills matter. While you might believe teaching critical thinking belongs in the classroom, there are ways you can play a role in improving your child’s discernment. Critical thinking can be broken down into key components, among them: identifying assumptions, evaluating context, and exploring alternatives. Opportunities to draw on each of these skills occur in everyday life, thus providing many teachable moments. Identifying assumptions. When you find yourself telling your child, “see, that wasn’t so bad,” you’re pointing out false assumptions. Take a moment to ask your child what they believed about the situation beforehand. Ask whether they were correct or incorrect. Later when you catch them assuming something, remind them how they might be mistaken. Evaluating context. Starting at a young age we naturally coach children about context. Inside voice/outside voice is a perfect example. To be proactive, you can turn context evaluation into a game. Ask your child to decide when it would be a good time for something (playing the piano in the afternoon, or after your brother goes to bed), what
6TH Annual Maui 5K SUNDAY, MARCH 5TH // 7AM START TIME MA’ALAEA TRIANGLE, 300 MA’ALAEA RD.
an appropriate place would be (dancing in a crowded restaurant or in the family room), or what a fitting tool would be (make a building out of shoeboxes or crystal bowls). Exploring alternatives. You probably help your child do this multiple times each day without realizing it. If you’re out of juice at breakfast time, you might ask your child whether she wants milk or water instead. When he can’t fit a puzzle piece, you point out two others on the table that might work. Rather than solving problems for your child, you can improve her critical thinking by encouraging her to evaluate the available options. Take the opportunity to discuss how sometimes one choice surpasses another, while on other occasions it doesn’t matter. By weaving critical thinking lessons into normal interactions, you will help your child become a better decision maker, goal setter, and problem solver. LK
Help raise funds for your school by joining the 6th Annual Maui 5K on Sunday, March 5, 2017! Last year’s event drew close to 600 participants and raised over $12,000.00 for Maui schools. Come enjoy Zumba by Keoni’s Hot Lava DanceFit, a Critter Station by Maui Ocean Center, and some yummy Maui Tropsicals! There wil be a 5K run and a 1 Mile Run/Walk accessible to all ability levels. Proceeds from the event will be distributed back to the participating schools to be used to enhance or improve the school’s physical fitness, play and athletic programs. The event will begin at 7:00 am at the Ma’alaea Triangle located at 300 Ma’alaea Rd., Wailuku, HI 96793. Have your school set up a tent for a post race party! Our Keiki COMMUNICATION
What an Upset Child is Really Trying to Say By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
A
ll behavior is a form of communication, though at times you may wish that your child had better ways to let you know he is upset! How your child manages his emotions has an impact on how he copes at home, at school and with his friends. Of course, emotional expression varies with age, context, and temperament. You are a model and a facilitator for the development of your child’s expressive skills and here are some tips: • Take daily opportunities to verbalize your emotions about daily experiences with your child i.e. “I was disappointed when …” • Verbalize a variety of emotions (happy, frustrated, sad, angry). This lets your child know it is ok to have a variety of emotions. • Validate and repeat back your child’s emotion so that she feels understood by you. • Avoid the urge to correct your child’s feelings (“you should not feel mad about that…”). If your child gets any sense that he will get in trouble or be corrected when he shares with you, your child will stop telling you how he feels. • Begin to talk about the SIZE of emotions i.e. “Were you a little sad about being rained out or sad in a big way?” This helps your child learn about range and variety of emotions”.
• Each day, have each family member share one thing that they were happy about in the day and one thing that was “tricky”. This helps your child to keep a balanced perspective on daily emotional experiences and to avoid feeling like any one event is ‘catastrophic’. • When your child is having a BIG emotion, avoid the urge to distract them or solve it. You are your child’s co-regulator. Sit in the “puddle” of emotion with your child and help her process through it, not avoid it. • Help your child learn how to calm his body when he has a BIG emotion i.e. have quiet time, have something to eat, play outside for a while to calm down. • Discuss how others may feel the same or different in the same situation. This builds the foundation for your child’s ability to understand someone else’s feelings. • Facilitate your child to problem solve around her emotions. What are at least 2 possible solutions if she were to be faced with that tricky situation and/or emotion again? • Discuss different ways to express emotions in different situations and with different people. Who do you feel safe telling your emotions to? What is the balance between being true to how you feel and not hurting someone else’s feelings? Our Keiki MILEGA HAWAII
Creating Cozy Spaces for Your Keiki T
here’s something so fun with having a cozy spot for keiki to call their own where they can do puzzles, read books, or use their imaginations. This space doesn’t have to be ostentatious or anything outrageously styled, just a spot in a corner of a room that’s a special place to rest their head, take a break from electronics and chill, or where older kids can do their homework. Or maybe it’s a traveling space that you set up on afternoons outside. No matter the location, here are some tips on making the space fun for your little and big kids. Bean Bags These plump bags that form to their body are sure to be a hit where everyone will want to hang out. What’s especially great about bean bags is that they’re mobile and can be moved around the house so any little nook can become a place to rest. Check out Maui’s own, Milega, who have bean bags and poufs made of quality fabrics in exciting colors. They come in all sizes and best of

all, they’re made with a lining and removable washable cover, which is important for little hands that can sometimes make a mess. Short on space inside? With our Maui weather it’s not out of the question to create a special space outside. Add a nice rug to a corner of your lanai or your yard, along with a small table, bean bag, poufs, or small chairs, and have an instant chillaxation station that you can take down at the end of the day. Add some shade with Milega Hawaii’s large or small lycra tents that are super easy to set up and take down, which means afternoon outside chill sessions are a breeze. Milega also has outdoor poufs and bean bags that are strong and high quality polyester fabric, waterproof, and weather resistant. Whether inside or outside, creating a cozy, fun nook for reading or homework time can be super comfortable and easy to set up using Milega Hawaii’s products. Check them out at www.poufim.com or in their Kahului showroom at 315 Hukilike Street where you’ll find high quality bean bags, baby products, outdoor products and more! SB
Eleven years ago when Melita Charan started Roots School in Haiku, she and her six students wanted to do a special holiday event to bring together families. However, their tiny one-room schoolhouse in the jungle was not large enough. One of the school’s families volunteered their home where the students happily sang songs and recited poetry. It was the joyful start to a new tradition. Over time, the school grew to 60 students and moved into a larger building in Haiku. The holiday event also began to grow and became known as the Children’s World Fair. Each year the celebration holds games, crafts, food, music, and performances. This year’s fair is on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Makawao Union Church. School board and auction chairs, Luke and River Siver, are pleased to announce that the proceeds from this year’s auction will start a new financial aid program. Our Keiki TECHNOLOGY
How to Protect Your Kids Online & Know the App Landscape So your kids want to go online. They love that iPad and that iPhone. Let’s face it, the next generation is being raised with technology, so let’s make sure they use it safely. For all kids, it’s good to put barriers on their iPad or on your phone that won’t allow them to do in-app purchases. If you don’t yet have in-app purchases disabled, go do it now! There’s nothing worse than waking up to a bill for nearly a thousand dollars (or even $20) for in-app purchases you had no idea your little one was making. Many phones are set so that they allow purchases up to 15 minutes once a password is put in or a purchase is used. This means if you download a game for your child and then hand the iPad over to them, they could potentially buy in-app purchases for up to 15 minutes. That’s enough time to do some damage. Especially when the game is saying they must have 100 diamonds to keep playing. Uh-oh! Don’t fear, there is something you can do to stop this potential disaster on your credit card. Change the time your device can hold onto a password. This is for iPhone and iPad: Go to “Settings” then “General” then to “Restrictions.” When you turn restrictions on you need to enter a four digit key. Do not share this with your kids.
Once in the “restrictions” screen, do the following to make your iPad child-proof for purchases: Turn the following “Off” • Installing Apps • Deleting Apps • In-App Purchases • Change “Required Password” to “immediately” For older kids, set rules about time spent online, about the types of sites they can visit, and let them know you’ll be checking up on things from time to time. This is to keep them safe, not to be a snoop. If your kids have a device of their own or are on any social media, it’s not a bad idea to keep a list of their passwords so that you can have access. Let them know you’ll be doing this, or you could even do it together, and check out their feeds from time to time. Just make sure you respect your older child’s privacy and don’t abuse this access. Maui Preparatory Academy Develops Boarding Program
H
aving recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, Maui Preparatory Academy continues to evolve as West Maui’s only independent, college-preparatory, preschool through high school. International Boarding Program Evolves In 2014 Maui Prep acquired a dormitory facility and launched a boarding program, welcoming students from Hawai’i, the Mainland, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. These students have flocked to Maui Prep for its nurturing, personalized, and rigorous learning environment, as well as its strong sense of community. As a student from Guangzhou, China shared, “Every teacher and student is very friendly to me. They helped me learn English and everything in the US. They are like my family. I love them.” Access to the world-class coastline of West Maui has also proved a key factor in attracting students from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Casablanca, Morocco, Dakar, Senegal, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and from every corner of Germany. As one student from Germany reflected, “The ocean is my refuge. The boarding house location is perfect. It only takes 5 minutes to get to the school or to
some surf spots.” Local and international students can experience Maui Prep for a quarter, a semester, a full academic year, over holiday breaks, and especially over the summer. Summer offerings center around the newly launched Moana Institute, which hosts an immersive 14-day marine studies experience built around snorkeling, scuba, surfing, sailing, hiking, and field studies. At all times of the year West Maui’s mountains and sea comprise a living classroom. With recent graduates gaining admission to Ivy League universities, and all graduates attending college, many with significant scholarship support, Maui Prep is on pace to grow its dynamic boarding program and play a key role in fostering a transformative educational community in West Maui. Bathtub Fun: Bath time Rituals to Put Kids to Bed “And at the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy, and your eyes sparkling.” -Shanti Establishing bath time rituals for your children helps them relax and prepare for bed. Aside from cleaning away the day’s germs, bath time also provides a fun way to connect with your child. Incorporate some of these bath time rituals into your daily routine: • Buy 2–3 pool noodles and cut each one into smaller pieces using a bread knife. Kids will have fun stacking them, sorting them by color, and swimming with them in the water. • Make homemade bath paint. Ingredients include: ¼ cup shampoo or body wash, ¼ cup cornstarch, 1–2 tablespoons water, and 3–4 drops food coloring. Combine the cornstarch, shampoo, and food coloring. Add water, ½ a tablespoon at a time until it reaches a good consistency. Store in an airtight container. Let your child “paint” with a paintbrush on the bathtub wall for a creative way to unwind at the end of the day. • Create a kid-friendly detox bath. Detox baths promote good health by flushing out toxins, strengthening the immune system, and promoting sleep and relaxation. For children under 60 pounds, add: ½ cup of epsom salt, ¼ cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and
Montessori School of Maui: Monster Yard Sale SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH // 8AM–1PM 2933 BALDWIN AVE., MAKAWAO The Monster Yard Sale is back! Get ready for the Montessori School of Maui’s 3rd Annual Monster Yard Sale, 8.a.m–1 p.m. on Saturday, February 18th. Bring
4 drops essential oil to a standard bath. Let your child soak for about twenty minutes and make sure he or she drinks plenty of water afterward. • Make bath time foam faces. Items needed include: assorted colors of craft foam sheets, scissors, and a hot-glue gun (optional for layering pieces). Simply cut-out eyes, noses, mouths, hair, ears etc. from foam sheets. Let your child add water to the back and stick them to the bath wall to design funny foam faces. After some fun playing in the tub, cleansing your child’s hair, and washing his or her body from top to bottom, bath time will almost be complete. Dry off your little one and moisturize his or her skin for a relaxing end to the day. Your child’s dirty feet and messy hair may be clean, but his eyes will still sparkle after a special bathtime. Note: For safety reasons never leave a child unattended in a bathtub. JP your friends and family to enjoy a morning of shopping of “Gently Used and Totally Awesome Stuff” in support of the school’s educational mission of “growing global citizens.” The “Monster Yard Sale” is a wonderful way to support the sustainability of our beautiful island by reusing toys, clothes, sporting goods, furniture, and other household items. Whether you choose to find out at your ultrasound or wait until the day of the baby’s arrival, these are a few fun ways to tell if you will have blue or pink in your near future. It’s a boy if: • You are clumsier than normal. • Your belly is round like a basketball. • Dad gains weight, rather than maintains or loses it. • Your age at conception added to the month of conception is an odd number. • Your skin is glowing. • You crave salty foods. • You carry the baby low. • Your face is long and lean. • You are hairier than normal. • Your baby’s heartbeat is lower than 140 bpm. It’s a girl if: • You are still graceful. • Your belly is wide like a watermelon. • Dad maintains weight or loses it.
• Your age at conception added to the month of conception is an even number. • You crave sweets. • Your skin breaks out in pimples. • You carry the baby high. • Your face is rounder than usual. • Your hair grows at the same rate as normal. • Your baby’s heartbeat is higher than 140 bpm. You may also buy gender reveal kits, if curiosity gets the best of you. Be warned, however, as they only have a fifty-percent chance of being correct. If you have an early ultrasound conducted there’s a method called the Ramzi Theory to guess the gender. At the six-week appointment you can ask the technician which side the placenta is located. If it is located on the left side of your body, the theory states that you will have a girl; if the placenta is located on the right side of your body, you will have a boy. Of course, all of these methods are just for fun and cannot be relied upon for 100% accuracy. The only guarantee for knowing the gender of your baby is finding out on the day he or she is born. JP

Need Help Paying for Preschool?
T
he Preschool Open Doors (POD) program is a statewide child care program that provides subsidies to eligible low- and moderate-income families to pay preschool tuition for up to one year at any of the state’s licensed 433 preschools. The POD subsidy provides children whose families might otherwise not be able to afford preschool the opportunity to gain essential skills to be successful in school and in life. The program is operated by the Department of Human Services. To qualify, your family must meet these requirements: A) Age of Child: Priority will be for children born between August 1, 2012–July 31, 2013 who are underserved or at-risk children. Families whose children were born between August 1, 2012 and July 31, 2013 are eligible to apply for POD services.
B) Gross family Income within allowable income limits: Families are income-ranked on a sliding scale to ensure funds are distributed to those most in need. If eligible, you may still have to pay some monthly preschool costs. For the 2017–18 POD year, the Department has $11.6 million for POD subsidies. Applications must be received at the PATCH POD office during an open application period to be considered for POD services. Your child’s assistance may begin July 2017 or later, depending on your preschool’s start date, and continue through June 2018. Your child may attend any DHS licensed preschool, group child care center, or group child care home you select. Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 31, 2017 at the PATCH POD office for the POD year beginning in July 2017. For more information or to request an application, please contact the POD office, PATCH, toll-free at 1-800-746-5620 or PODAdmin@patch-hi.org. Applications will also be available from January 23, 2017 through March 31, 2017 for downloading at http://patchhawaii.org/programs/preschoolopen-doors/.

Baby Keiki GYMAGERY
Gymagery is Fun for Me! That’s what children say each class in the mobile, preschool gymnastics program known as Happy Day Gymagery. The program is the brain child of collegiate gymnast, Rona Smith, who had a desire to teach Gymnastics to preschoolers, but was challenged by their lack of motor skills and their short attention spans. Determined, Smith looked to take the lead from the children and developed a revolutionary approach of teaching through storytelling, music, and appropriately challenging physical activities. All elements of the classes engage the children in her signature “Movement Adventure.” Why, you might ask do children love this program so much…asking their parents if today is ”Gymagery day”, over and over? ...Chanting “I love Gymagery” upon arrival to their schools? From the outer appearance it looks to be an ordinary class with teachers and lots of colorful props. Below the surface however, is a class inspired by the developmental needs of the young child. The teachers are not just teachers but adept story tellers and the props are not just props but unusual, sensory motor equipment. It is a unique class based on PLAY! The foundation of the class relies on the belief that imaginative play helps to develop the child emotionally, socially and psychologically. By honing their uses of language, problem solving, and development of empathy, each session works to

promote growth of skills that will help carry them successfully through life. No amount of technology can meet the needs of the human brain and body like imaginative play. What could be more valuable than that? Some of the latest Neuroscience research finds that nothing lights up all the centers of the brain like imaginative play. We are wired to love things that nourish our body/ brain connection. Gymagery does exactly that! Because the classes are taught as “Movement Adventures” without competition at the core, even the most shy or hesitant child begins to blossom in these classes. There are plenty of opportunities for competition later on—both academically and physically, but these early years are meant for PLAY! That’s why “Gymagery is fun for me!” For more information, please contact Happy Day Gymagery at (808) 283-8696 or 280-4470. Photo credit: Jeremy Ota

All IN THE Ohana
FAMILY & COMMUNITY
Spring Time Fun for the Ohana Spring time means caterpillars and butterflies and the sun setting a little more to the right around here. It’s also a great time to do projects around the house with the keiki. Here are three fun projects and outings to get the whole family into the spirit of spring! Make a Bird Feeder This project is so easy! Additionally, it recycles and offers the kids a great opportunity to observe the birds when they fly by for a nibble. What you’ll need: • Cardboard toilet paper roll inserts or paper towel inserts • Peanut Butter • Bird food 1. Let the kids apply the peanut butter to the outside of the cardboard roll. 2. Pour out some bird seed into a shallow dish. 3. Then roll the peanut butter covered roll in the seed.
At this point you can either slide the roll onto a tree branch and be done, or you can add some string to the top of the roll through two hole punches, and hang it from a branch that way. Go For a Picnic Spring time calls for picnics. They can be in your own backyard, on the beach, or after a nice hike Upcountry. Let the kids help you get the fixings ready and pack the basket. Have them help make finger sandwiches, wash the fruit and package it up, gather utensils and napkins then place it all in a fun basket. Don’t forget the blanket! Relax and enjoy a yummy lunch or afternoon snack in the outdoors. *This is also doable on raining Spring days—just bring the picnic inside and eat on the floor, that’s always fun! Go on a Search for Caterpillars Up in Kapalua are the Village Walking Trails. Once the Kapalua Village Golf Course, the trail still has concrete, which is great for strollers, but is now overgrown, which is great for seeing butterflies and caterpillars. Park near the Kapalua Activity Center off of Office Road, pop the little ones in the stroller or give them some good walking shoes, and head out for a little caterpillar hunting. You’ll find them hanging off of the plants all around you. Bring a container and let your little one take one home to watch the process of it becoming a butterfly. You can extend the experience by bringing the butterfly back and releasing it when ready! SB

Trust the Gut: Listening to Our Intuition “Trust your hunches. They are usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level.” -Dr. Joyce Brothers
A
s a parent you are faced with difficult decisions concerning your children throughout their young lives. You may tend to dismiss your gut instincts, but listening to your intuition is an important part of parenthood. It can be developed over time, however, women often times tend to possess intuition more naturally than men. “Female ancestors needed to evaluate a situation quickly in order to tune in to their infant and their environment for protection and survival. Their brains were trained with peak awareness because they were protecting a heart outside of their own bodies,” (www. medicaldaily.com). That’s why it’s called your “mama gut” for discerning mothers. One of the main areas you need to exercise your intuition is medical care. When it comes to your child’s health sometimes you need a second, third or even a fourth opinion. If your intuition tells you something is wrong or that diagnosis is not correct, then seek the help your child needs. You are his or her biggest advocate. You know your child best, so for the sake of his or her health, do not ignore your intuition. Another instance where you need to trust your gut is when dealing with people. Perhaps your gut tells you that a person is not trustworthy. Usually your first response to someone is correct. There are cases when this proves false,
however, when you listen to your intuition, you may be saving yourself and those you love heartache in the end. Some ways you may improve your intuition include spending quiet time meditating on your thoughts about a particular situation or person, journaling your thoughts as they pop into your mind, and learning to understand your physical and emotional responses throughout the day. Give yourself permission to slow down during the day and pay attention to your intuition. As you take the time to acknowledge that still, small voice nudging you a certain direction, you will grow in your intuition. JP

Beauty Tips to Pass On to a Friend
T
he beauty tip I would pass on to a friend is this: keep your routine as simple and as natural as possible. The foundation of any good beauty routine is to work from the inside out. Staying hydrated with plenty of filtered water is key to glowing skin. Additionally, eating “real” foods like fruits, veggies, and proteins, rather than processed foods and sugars, is revealed through the condition of your skin. Starting with good nutrition and hydration sets you up for the rest of your beauty regimen. Making healthy choices lessens the need for the number of makeup products needed and your routine can be shortened. Achieving healthy
skin is just the first step. Using a natural SPF every day is essential to keeping it, especially on the Hawaiian Islands. I personally use organic coconut oil as my SPF. However, several other companies also produce sunscreens without toxic parabens that are reef-safe. Another way I like to use organic coconut oil is to remove eye makeup. Not only does it clean off your mascara easily, it also promotes eyelash growth naturally. It’s a win-win! Coconut oil is really a universal, go-to product for many health/beauty needs. You can use it to add shine and silkiness to your hair; for oil pulling for healthy teeth; to moisturize your skin; to create a natural deodorant; etc. The possibilities are endless! So if you are looking for one beauty tip, remember to keep it simple and natural! Your health will shine through your beauty routine as you incorporate these easy steps.

Ohana Pay it forward
Kind Kids Recycling Club Pays it Forward So, what is Kind Kids Recycling Club? Last year 12 year-old DJ Metzler, told his dad, Dustin, about an idea he had. “Dad, I want to start a recycling service. I’ll go around Makawao and collect people’s recycling, but I won’t charge them anything. I’ll make money at the recycling center, and to make it a really good thing, I’ll donate a portion of what I make to the Maui Food Bank.” He and his dad came up with “Kind Kids Recycling Club.” The idea is simple: any boy or girl who lives in an area that takes redeemable recycling can join. Just like DJ, with a bit of help from mom or dad, boys and girls can offer a recycling collection service to neighbors, friends, and family members. They’ll do the work of bagging and sorting at no charge to their recycling supporters. They take the recycling and earn money at their local redemption center. To be a participant in the club, every boy and girl takes the “Kind Kid Pledge.” At least half of everything a child earns from recycling goes into their Pay it Forward envelope. The promise is that this money can ONLY be spent on a good deed or kind gesture for someone else. It’s Pay it Forward at it’s finest.
The Club is all about empowering children. They go out, do good work to earn money, then they decide for themselves what’s important to them, and how they will spend their money to positively benefit others. They don’t have to wait until they’re adults to begin seeing how they can personally make a difference. This is their vision and they invite every boy and girl to join the movement. Here, neighbor islands, and throughout the mainland and beyond. To connect with Kind Kids Recycling Club, check them out on Facebook, or email Dustin at kindkidsrecycling@gmail.com.

Rainy Day Supply Kit Growing up on Maui, kids (and parents) can get accustomed to being outdoors. The island is our playground! So what happens when it rains, and going to the beach or out for a hike is out of the question? You get creative and crafty, and you save the day because you have the best rainy day supply kit, ever! See below. For the toddler: Let’s get sensory! • Playdough • Cookie cutters to make shapes from the playdough • Bag of beans (these are great for sensory fun) • Shallow buckets (for hiding objects in a bucket of dried beans or for water play) • Books about rain For the older child: Let’s get crafty! • Washable paints (watercolors are great) • Markers • Crayons • Glue • Craft paper (a giant roll of craft paper is always great to keep on hand) • Other art supplies like origami papers, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, and other crafty odds and ends
For the preteen: Let’s build and hang out! • Old bed sheets (sheets can be used to create a rainy day fort in the living room; make a “room” for each child in the house so that each one has his or her space to enjoy a book or hang out listening to the raindrops) • Mad Libs (to share laughter together) • Movies that only come out when it rains (The Goonies could be a fun pick) • Popcorn (this is a must when you’re watching a movie!) Okay, so these items may take up an entire cupboard rather than fit into a small kit. But you may find that you have most of these items around the house anyways. So, when you start to hear those raindrops, grab this list and get to having some rainy day fun!

Spring Allergy & Detox Remedies
S
neezes, red eyes, and a general feeling of ugh... that’s allergies. Even on Maui with the slight change of seasons, allergies can wreak havoc on your system. Here are a couple of natural ways to get rid of those springtime allergies. Enter the Awesome, and Popular, Essential Oils Lemon, peppermint, and lavender essential oils have been known to help manage your seasonal allergies. Just make sure the essential oils you use are pure. Here are a couple of ways to use the lemon, lavender, and peppermint combination of oils: 1. Diffuse lemon, lavender, and peppermint in a diffuser. If you don’t have a diffuser, you can also add the essential oils to a steamy hot pot of water then place your face over it with a towel over your head. For the kids, you can place a few drops of each oil into your hands, rub them together then cup your child’s face and have them take in some deep breaths.
2. Use the lavender, lemon, and peppermint combination topically. Add the three oils to your hand along with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or even olive oil. Rub your hands together and then rub on the back of your neck, temples, and forearms. Good to know! Lemon can make your skin sensitive to the sun and cause your skin to burn in areas of application. Be sure to wait 24 hours before heading out to enjoy some rays if you use the topical method. Another wonderful, natural, and easy way to help manage allergies is using a neti pot. The neti pot, which you can get at the drugstore, can help flush out the allergens from your nasal passages and offer relief from seasonal allergies. Most neti pots will come with a saline solution that you mix with distilled water. You simply pour it down one side of your nose as means to clean out your nasal passages. Follow all of the instructions that come with your neti pot and be sure to clean it between uses. Best bet is to use one per family member so that you don’t share germs. Check out www.TheOilTalk.com to learn more about therapeutic-grade essential oils.

Ohana communication
How to Hear Our Children If you’ve ever watched a child storm off in frustration at your lack of understanding or have been accused of not listening, then you know the challenge in really hearing children. Here are a few tips to help pave the way to understanding in your household: Make eye contact as often as possible when your child speaks to you. It’s easy to be distracted by a computer or smartphone screen, especially when a child has interrupted you. If necessary, ask them to pause for a moment for you to finish up what you’re doing in order to give them your full attention. Ask questions. Whether the conversation concerns what happened at school, or an issue they have with a playmate, we can inadvertently mishear what they’re saying by assuming we know what’s up. Taking the time to delve into the circumstances allows you to overcome those assumptions to better hear what your child wants to communicate. Look for the emotions beneath your child’s words. Sometimes kids believe they aren’t being heard because they haven’t developed the vocabulary to tell us what they’re feeling. By mirroring back the emotions you perceive with phrases like, “That sounds frustrating”, you not only express empathy and understanding, you also equip your child with words to describe their emotions.
Withhold judgment until you have gotten a clear picture. This becomes especially important when it comes to sibling disputes. In some cases, one child may be better at “selling” their side of the story and so the other regularly takes the blame. Watch for those tendencies and your own prejudices. There’s nothing like an unfair judgment to make a child feel unheard. Try taking each child aside and listening to their version without other input. Create a regular context for your child to be heard. Cuddling before bedtime and reviewing the day cultivates a sense of security and allows your child an opportunity to open up. “Hearing” our kids means giving them attention. It means investing in our relationship with them and recognizing them as individuals with unique viewpoints and responses to the world around them. LK

Picky, Picky!: Tips for Dealing with Selective Eaters
I
t’s pretty common–normal, even–for children to be picky eaters. Will your keiki ever eat more than toast and bananas? These tips from Hawaii moms can help. I encourage my children to try foods they’ve never had before. My rule is they need to try it before they decide how they feel about it. I also incorporate a new food into something they already like. My daughter didn’t like the way kiwi looked, so I cut it up and served it with fruit she likes. - Linda Muramoto Keep offering the foods they don’t seem to like and eventually their tastes will come around. Talk with your spouse about how yummy a new food is and show that you enjoy it with “mmm” sounds as you eat. - Michelle Okimoto
You can’t bribe or force your kids to eat. I present healthy options and let them decide if they want to try it. If they don’t want what I’ve made, they can have a healthy substitute. But they have to prepare it themselves and clean up afterwards. - Cindy Spreg My kids have to try something at least a couple of times in different forms – raw, cooked, in a sauce or soup – before they decide how they feel about it. If they don’t like it at all, I reintroduce it later. If nutrients are the big issue, I put vegetables in a smoothie or mix it in a meal. I don’t hide it from them. I tell them that I put the vegetable in there and they’re usually surprised that they couldn’t taste it. - Nicole Okamura My line with a smile is, “You don’t have to like it, you just have to eat it. Try it 15 times before you say you don’t like it.” It also helps to introduce the craziest vegetable dishes after their sports events and after they bathe when they’re starving. I get no complaints then. - Heidi Taam Tips from Moms In Hawaii (momsinhawaii. com). Article by HMSA.

Our Teens News • TreNds • Tips Making Sense of Adolescence Tweens, teens, adolescents, youths. Whatever you call them, the young people in our lives going through the transition from childhood to adulthood called adolescence can be confusing, amusing, and downright frustrating at times. But when you consider that the emotions and behaviors they display are common for kids their ages, the transition becomes less taxing. It helps to know that many adolescents… Push boundaries. Teens begin to see the world as less black and white. They develop the ability to understand nuances. They may stretch the rules to discover which are hard-and-fast and which ones fall in a grey area. As they seek to understand the world and their changing bodies, adolescents also sometimes push the limits of their own physical abilities, which can lead to behavior that adults see as unnecessarily risky. Like to sleep late. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a natural shift in circadian rhythms occurs during adolescence. This leads teens to be alert later into the night. In turn falling asleep becomes more difficult, leading to a delayed wake-up time. Combine that with the demands of homework and extracurricular activities and it may also seem like your teen is constantly tired - because he is!
Home for Science & Discovery? Founded in 2014 by a group of dedicated parents/volunteers the Maui Science Center has become a popular part of the comunity, bringing innovative and interactive experiences to the public in form of Science Shows, Interactive family Workshops, Science Carnivals, and more. In 2016, traveling program Science on Wheels, was launched as part of the outreach, sharing exciting demonstrations and hands-on labs at local classrooms and community orga-
Become more self-absorbed. Who am I? How do I fit into the world? Why am I here? In adolescence metacognition, the awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes, develops. Armed with this new self-perception, teens spend time comparing themselves to those around them and evaluating themselves against norms and expectations. They may “try on” different personalities and interests in an effort to find where they fit. Demonstrate a greater reliance on peers and a desire to distance themselves from their parents. A need for autonomy and independence surfaces during this phase of development. This shift subconsciously prepares them to leave the nest in the upcoming years. However, as with many aspects of adolescence, the effect can come across as exaggerated. They may act as though they don’t want you around at all when really they just want space. nizations. To move beyond the “pop up events”, the Maui Science Center is ready to create a physical presence by renting an initial space in central Maui. But this is only possible with the generous support of the Maui community. Discovery, Fun, Excitement, and Hands-On Learning through effective partnership the MSC, will create a social and educational powerhouse for curious minds of all ages. Bring Faraway Grandparents & Grandkids Closer By HEATHER GREENWOOD-Junkermeier On Maui, many grandparents and grandchildren are a flight away from one another. It may be a short interisland flight, a longer flight to the mainland, or even an international flight. No matter the distance, with a little bit of creativity and time, that beautiful intergenerational relationship can blossom. Advancements in technology, phone calls, texts, and video chats are a staple for long distance relationships, but there is magic in the old fashioned low-tech ideas of yesterday. Be pen pals. Let’s face it, regardless of age, nothing quite matches the joy of mail from someone you love. And there are so many ideas to keep this activity fun and engaging for everyone. Exchange postcards. This idea not only brings together grandparents and grandchildren, but can be a fun family affair if everyone is always on the lookout for fun postcards. Write a story together. The grandchild’s age will dictate the complexity of the story. Grandparents and grandchildren will take turns writing a

sentence, paragraph, or even page. This not only offers writing practice but also creates anticipation for the next letter. Create traditions. Traditions provide children with a sense of time, place, and belonging. One grandmother sends a birthday card for each year, so for a grandchild’s 5th birthday, 5 cards arrive in the mail. Play games. Many traditional board games are now available online, making it possible for two people who live miles apart to play together. Some examples include Scrabble, Battleship, Checkers, Chess, Tic Tac Toe, etc. Other low-tech games can easily be played over the phone, such as Mad Libs and 20 Questions. For grandparents and grandchildren who both live on Maui, contact Maui’s UH Extension office at 244-3242, ext. 226 or heather8@hawaii.edu for information on workshops and events.
Join top scientists, photographers and filmmakers at the 11th Annual Whale Tales, February 24-27th at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. Event highlights include: family day featuring the IMAX film Humpback Whales and a whale watch with the experts; Maui premiere of the new IMAX film, National Parks Adventure by McGillivray Freeman Films; Whale Tales Art & Education Expo featuring local artists and NGOs, with hands-on education stations, and a guided SUP tour, Paddle for the Whales. Admission is free to attend presentations and the Art and Education Expo ($20 suggested donation), registration required. Benefit whale watches and ocean activities start at $50. Event proceeds support whale research and education efforts in Hawai’i. Visit WhaleTrust.org to register and access a schedule of activities. Whale Tales is hosted by Whale Trust Maui and sponsored by Pacific Life Foundation, One World One Ocean Campaign by MacGillivray Freeman Films, and Makana Aloha Foundation.
