Our Keiki News • TreNds • Tips Summer Crafts Get outside with these super fun summer craft ideas. These activities will let your little one get messy while making beautiful art. Let the kids do these in their bathing suits or in old clothes. Spray Bottle Painting What you’ll need: • Canvas • Five or six spray bottles • Water colors • Water Pop out the water color disc from the water color palette from the store. Try to find one that’s washable so it doesn’t stain your child or his or her surroundings. Fill your spray bottles with water. Crush the water color disc and add it to the spray bottle. Do this for other colors so your child has a variety. Lay the canvas against a fence or on the grass. Then let your little one spray his or her masterpiece onto the blank canvas. Use this time to talk about how mixing colors together can make a new color, and try it out. Also, talk about the different shapes the spray paint makes. Take it a step further by first adding stick-on letters to the canvas, spelling your child’s name or a common saying such as “Aloha,” before your little one starts to add color. Once he or she is done
Live Theatre at MAPA this Summer! JULY 15TH–24TH // ‘A’ALI’IKUHONUA CREATIVE ARTS CENTER, SEABURY HALL Audiences of all ages are in for a treat this summer when the young actors from MAPA’s Summer Musical Theatre Camp present Disney’s The Little Mermaid, running July 1524 at ‘A’ali’ikuhonua Creative Arts Center at Seabury Hall. In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s
spray painting, remove the stick-on letters and you’ve got yourself a cool, one-of-a-kind typography art piece. Super Disappearing Paint What you’ll need: • Sponge or traditional paintbrushes (you can even cut up a new kitchen sponge and let your little one use that) • A bucket or bowl • Water Head on outside and find yourself some cement. Use the water as “paint,” letting your little one dip the brush (or sponge) in the water and make fun drawings on the sidewalk or in your driveway. Then, you can time how long the drawing will stay before it dries up from the summer sun. Best of all, it’s little to no mess, but just as fun. SB
beloved story and the classic animated film, the musical is a charming fable featuring a score of irresistible songs including “Under the Sea”, “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Part of Your World”. Over the past four years, MAPA’s summer musical at the MACC has become a Maui tradition. This August, the gothic musical Jekyll and Hyde will mesmerize audiences with its thrilling score and evocative story about a man with a dark secret. Due to mature themes, this show is great for a date night! For tickets and more information, visit www. mauiacademy.org or call 808-244-MAPA.

Making & Keeping Friendships BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
F
riendships are important for a child’s emotional wellbeing. Friendships are the context in which your child develops communication skills, emotional regulation and problem solving. Yet navigating friendships can be tricky and involve many complex skill sets. It turns out there are few social ‘rules’ and that navigating the social world involves understanding others in the context of being able to read how they feel and understand their intentions. Approximately 70% of communication is non-verbal, specifically facial cues and body language. About 23% of emotional content comes from the way you say something. Only 7% of communication is what you say and here is where much of the challenge in navigating the social world lies. Even when someone tells you something verbally, understanding the meaning of what they are saying lies in their gestures and vocal intonations. This is why emails and letters are so often misinterpreted! For children, this means getting a lot of practice reading non-verbal cues. Sometimes kids who are quite sensitive, get less practice because they feel overwhelmed with social situations and may distance themselves or avert their gaze. Kids who are highly active often zoom around too quickly to follow the longer chains of non-verbal interaction that would tell them what someone is feeling. Some kids are aware of others’ feelings
and ideas but may have a hard time being flexible because of their own big feelings. Other kids get overwhelmed with how unpredictable social situations are and become bossy as an attempt to have more control. Some kids let others be the boss as they find it hard to be assertive. Parents play a foundational role in developing a child’s friendship skills. • Carve out time for you and your child to have robust social exchanges daily • Model how to communicate, regulate your emotions and problem solve in how you interact with others • Create weekly/daily opportunities for quality unstructured social time with a friend. • One-to-one ‘play dates’ provide the opportunity for your child to practice navigating long exchanges, negotiating with one person at a time. • Help your child interpret non-verbal social cues. • Process with your child social situations that are smooth and those that are tricky. Talk about your child’s feelings and how her friend might feel. Facilitate your child to problem solve. • Set up social situations for success. Some children do much better in smaller groups or one-to-one situations than navigating large groups.

Stopping the “Summer Slide” Summer is a great time to give children a break from their long school days – to have fun with friends and to rest. But, learning doesn’t have to stop. Do you know that most students lose about 2 months of grade-level equivalency in math over the summer because the learning isn’t embedded into their environment? The loss of reading ability also can occur if students aren’t reading books or listening to books read aloud. Many kids experience what is called the “summer slide” during summer vacation, due to the lack of deliberate practice. The brain is a muscle and it operates similarly to the muscles in your body. After a long break from the gym, it’s hard to get motivated again; and when you do finally go back, you can’t run as fast, you don’t have as much stamina, and you can’t lift as much weight. The same thing happens to kids after a long break from using their minds. Their skills decrease, and they lose motivation. When students return to school after taking a few months off, they spend time relearning material. What may seem like two months off, can easily slide into four months of progress
that could have been made. Because children have more free time during the summer, it is a great opportunity for them to get ahead. Continuing to practice academic skills yearround is recommended to keep skills sharp, making the transition back to school a smooth one. Reading books frequently is a wonderful summertime activity to prevent summer learning loss. It’s also very convenient because books can be read anywhere.
Night at the Movies with Maui Humane Society SATURDAY, JUNE 4TH // SUGAR BEACH EVENTS, KIHEI The Maui Humane Society and Sugar Beach Events present an inspirational night at the movies to benefit the Maui Humane Society. The family-friendly event will feature two films. The Champions is an inspirational story about the Vicktory pit bulls and those who risked it all to save them. It is a story of second chances, redemption and hope. This uplifting documentary takes us on a journey, and it is about much more than just dogs—it is about prejudice, being misunderstood, the power of resilience, and the significance of the relationship that humans have with animals. Also showing will be For The Love of Dogs, an inspiring, heart-warming story told through the eyes of a child on the autism spectrum whose passion for dogs has opened up his communication, allowing him to connect with the world around him. The event will be held on Saturday, June 4 at Sugar Beach Events in Kihei. The films will be shown under the stars, and food and beverages will be available for purchase. Please note that this is a family-friendly event; however, they ask that children attending be over the age of 10 years old. For more information, please visit their website at www.mauihumanesociety.org or check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MauiHumaneSociety.

Hiking with Kids: West Maui There are tons of wonderful places on Maui to hike with the family, but for this article, we’re going to focus on West Maui. Make this a day trip if you live on another part of the island, or check out your own backyard if West Maui is home. First stop is in Kapalua at the Honolua Ridge & Maunalei Arboretum Trails, which are tucked away within the Plantation Estates neighborhood. You’ll need to take a shuttle there, which you can pick up at the Kapalua Village Center off of Office Road. Be sure to check times before you go; they have certain times that the shuttle goes to and from the trail. The weather is cooler and it can be wet, so dress accordingly and bring some bug spray. This trail is not stroller friendly. It’s great for older kids, or if you wear your little one. Another favorite, with spectacular views, is the Village Walking Trails. This trail also starts at the Kapalua Village Center where there’s plenty of parking available. Instead of hitching a ride in the shuttle, you can start right out on the trail next to the center. This used to be the old Village golf course, so it’s paved. If you want to bring a jogger or stroller on your hike, this is your place. It has some pretty steep hills which are good for those glutes, but can be challenging. Once at the top you’ll find a
pond with ducks, which the kids are sure to love. The views from this trail are magnificent and well worth the extra push up the hills. If you are up for some beachfront scenery, check out the Coastal Trail in Kapalua. You can start by parking at DT Fleming beach park or at Ironwoods and heading south. There are sand dunes and planked trails, with neat rock formations on the sea that the little ones will love to explore. The trail is almost 2 miles one way. This is a great walk in the morning or at sunset, with or without kids. Also in West Maui, south of Lahaina Town, is the Launiupoko Walking Trail. Located mauka of the Launiupoko beach park, up the hill in the middle of the residential area, this trail is paved and gets the stroller or bike approval. You’ll get to enjoy amazing views of Lahaina Town, the islands of Lanai and Molokai, and the beautiful ocean as far as you can see. It can be hot with little shade, so bring water and a hat! SB

How to Raise a Butterfly Care for Your Caterpillar Place the leaf in your container. Within a few days it should hatch, revealing a tiny worm or larva. You may find holes in the leaf, signaling the larva’s presence. Occasionally replace eaten or wilted leaves with fresh ones. You’ll also need to dump the caterpillar’s droppings.
T
here’s nothing like watching butterflies grow in your own home. Here’s how:
Select a Container Select a container with good ventilation so the caterpillar droppings (called “frass”) can dry. Also, choose one with a top where the caterpillar can attach its chrysalis. In addition, you will want your container to be large enough for the butterfly to spread its wings to dry once it emerges. Harvest Eggs Monarchs lay their eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves. Look for a miniscule green bump on the undersurface. That’s the egg. To best harvest the egg, remove the leaf from the plant, leaving the egg attached. If the milkweed isn’t growing in your yard, you may want to uproot the entire plant and transplant it in a pot indoors. Then you’ll have access to your caterpillar’s food source, which you’ll need once the egg hatches.
Chrysalis Phase After about two weeks your caterpillar will stop eating and attach himself to the lid of your container. When the inverted caterpillar takes on a “J” shape, he’s ready to spin his pupa or chrysalis. In a day or so, the caterpillar will be completely enveloped in the chrysalis. Over the 10-day phase the green chrysalis will darken and then become clear. You’ll recognize the outline and markings of the butterfly’s wings inside. Release When the butterfly first emerges its wings will be wet, so it will hang from the container lid while they dry. Let it hang there for at least a few hours or overnight. When you are ready to release the butterfly, move the container outside, gently remove the lid with the butterfly still dangling, and hold it away from you. Then watch as your butterfly takes flight and settles among the flowers in its new home. LK

Baby Keiki News • TreNds • Tips The Impact of Lead in Babies & Children BY LISA KIMuRA
By now, you’ve probably heard about the crisis in Flint, Michigan, where thousands of families have been affected by lead poisoning. But did you know that the problem can exist anywhere, and that exposure to lead causes irreversible, lifelong health problems, including developmental delays, learning difficulties, and slowed growth? Infants and young children are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, as they absorb lead more easily and sustain more harm from it than adults and older children. It occurs when lead builds up in the body, often over a period of months or years. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious problems, and at very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal. Lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust in older buildings are the most common sources of lead poisoning in children. Although lead-based paints for homes, children’s toys and household furniture have been banned in the United States since 1978, lead-based paint is still on walls and woodwork in many older homes and apartments. Lead pipes, brass plumbing fixtures and copper pipes soldered with lead can also release lead particles into tap water. The effects of lead exposure can severely affect mental and physical development. To protect your child from lead poisoning, consider the following: • Fix peeling lead paint and make home repairs safely, particularly in homes built before 1978.
• Let tap water run for one minute before using it, if it hasn’t been run for a few hours. • Only use cold tap water for drinking, cooking, and making baby formula. Boiling your water does not get rid of lead. • Use lead-free dishes. Don’t serve or store food in pewter, crystal, or cracked pottery. • Serve foods that have calcium, iron, and vitamin C, as these foods help keep lead from being stored in your child’s body. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends your child be tested for lead levels at ages one and two, during well-child visits. A small blood sample is taken from a finger prick to test lead levels in the blood. If you have reason to believe your child has been exposed, make sure to ask your doctor for an evaluation so that you can act quickly.
• Keep children away from peeling or chipped paint. • Mop floors often, and use damp paper towels to clean window wells and sills. • Lead is in some children’s jewelry, toys, keys, and old furniture. Sign up for children’s product recall alerts at www.cpsc.gov/en/Newsroom/Subscribe/.

Summer Safety Tips Stay safe on land and in water!
WATER SAFETY 1. Never turn your back on the ocean. 2. Never swim alone. Swimming in numbers dramatically reduces the risk of injury and drowning. 3. Pay attention to signage on the beach for dangerous conditions.
HELMET SAFETY Wear a correct fitting helmet when riding your bike or skateboard! 1. The helmet should sit level on your head and low on your forehead–one or two finger-widths above your eyebrow. 2. Center the buckle under the chin.
4. Know your limits. When in doubt, don’t go out. 5. Swim only in safe, lifeguarded areas. No one can anticipate changing ocean currents, rip currents, sudden storms, or other hidden dangers.
3. Adjust the side straps to form a “V” shape slightly under the ears. 4. One finger should fit between the chin and chin strap. Shake your head. If the fit is right, your helmet will stay on tight.
HIKING SAFETY 1. Know the terrain you will cover, the trail length, and the weather conditions. 2. Carry proper equipment, including a first aid kit, flashlight, and lots of water.
3. Wear proper shoes and clothing, including sunscreen. 4. Hike in a group and keep track of those in your party.

Enjoying the Lazy Days of Summer Vacations off island, summer camps, playdates and schedules – throw those all away and let’s get lazy. Sure, it’s nice to sign your kids up for a ton of summer camps or to plan a lot of outings; and sometimes it’s a necessity with work and to keep your sanity. But then there are those days when you want to keep it mellow and have yourself a nice lazy summer day. Fort building for some family fun Forts make everything more fun. Use some sheets to set up a fort city, either inside or out. Sit underneath your sheet canopy with the kids and read books together, take a nap, or have a picnic. Watching a movie is always so fun when cuddled in a fort. It’s like camping inside and kids love that. Mellow grinds Lazy summer days are great for grazing. A little prep here can go a long way. Cut up veggies and slice up some fruit, and pack
them in little snack bags. Make sandwiches the day before and have them ready in the fridge. The point here is to prep a little so that you can chill out a lot. No need to make lunch for everyone; just let them grab and go, and then have that picnic in the fort. Beach bums Nothing screams a lazy summer day like spending all day at the beach. Pack up the sunscreen, the blankets, maybe some sheets to make a fort in the sand, and spend all day with the waves tickling your toes. Be sure to bring an umbrella, and maybe a playpen for the super little ones. Have plenty of snacks and water for everyone to grab themselves. The key is no stress, all play, with nowhere to be or go. Just enjoy a full day in the sand. SB
New MECO PV Program Want to get solar PV, but missed out on Net Metering? There’s now a new program called Customer Self Supply, or CSS available. With CSS, you store your surplus power into your own battery, which you then use at night. If your battery gets too low, you then buy your power from the Utility, so that you always have firm power. If the Grid goes down, you still have access to your power. This is great for people worried about a natural disaster or who live in an area with frequent power interruptions. A typical 5kw system can save you well over $40,000 over a 25-year period. Call Hawaii Energy Smart today to find out more, or visit us on the web: www.HawaiiEnergySmart.com.

Maui Staycation Ideas Maui has been voted the #1 island in the world on numerous occasions. With abundant outdoor activities, enjoying a “staycation” here is simple to do. While there are many world-class resorts to choose from for a vacation that many dream of their entire lives, we are focusing on less expensive staycation ideas. To create a staycation itinerary that the entire family will enjoy, you may start by having a brainstorming session with your spouse and kids. Here are some examples to get you started on the staycation of your dreams. • Camp, hike and watch the sunrise/sunset on Haleakala. • Camp on the beach. Check online for county permits and locations beforehand. • Spend the day on the “other side” of the island. If you live Upcountry, spend a full day on the West side, and vice versa. You could even trade houses with a friend on another part of the island for a day or two. This will give you a chance to explore the area with less time constraints. • Enjoy dinner at your favorite restaurant that offers kama’aina or happy hour specials.
• Learn a new skill as a family. From outrigger canoe paddling to surfing to snorkeling, Maui offers countless opportunities to get outside together. Many companies offer lessons and equipment for those wishing to learn. • Rent a cabin in Hana and explore Maui’s tropical East side. • Spend the day at Iao Valley. Hike to the needle or other nearby trails, then cool off in the calming streams. Picnic pavilions are great places to barbeque with your ‘ohana. • Shop Northshore/Upcountry boutiques. Find one-of-a-kind art and handmade treasures at the many shops in Paia and Makawao. Support local artisans while enjoying your shopping spree. • Spend a day trying out different Maui food trucks. However you choose to spend your staycation, focusing on your loved ones while relaxing together will create memories to cherish for years to come. JP

Tips to Boost Your Creativity Go for a walk. A Stanford Graduate School of Education study found that “walking opens up the free flow of ideas, and it is a simple and robust solution to the goals of increasing creativity and increasing physical activity.” Not only that, but they found that the boost in creativity continues even once the walk is over.
W
hether you consider yourself creative or not, everyone can benefit from adding creativity to their life. Creativity promotes success in the workplace, aids in problem-solving in relationships with those we care about, and improves physical and mental wellbeing. Try adding one or more of these creativity boosters to your day and see how it positively affects your life. Engage in a creativity “warm-up” exercise. Researchers in China asked subjects to imagine alternative uses for a common object such as a paper clip. This resulted in increased brain connectivity that enhanced the subjects’ creative abilities. You can do the same exercise yourself before participating in creative work.

Put pen to paper. Shifting from working on a screen to the slower pace of pen on paper, has been shown to enable greater focus, which can yield more productivity and, in turn, enhanced creativity. If nothing else, knowing that the brain functions differently depending on the mode of communication is a good reason to integrate writing longhand into your daily rhythm. Stray from your routine. Or don’t. Some creative types rely heavily on routine because it frees their mind from excessive decision making. Others make a point of shaking up their routines for the stimulus that novelty affords them. If you have few routines, try adding one or two to see how they impact your creativity. Or, if you are a creature of habit, try changing things up when your inventiveness ebbs. LK
Alexander Academy Performing Company presents Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland June 4 and 5 at Seabury Hall’s ‘A‘ali‘ikuhonua Creative Arts Center. I am always delighted to hear our reputation is living up to our mission. Our studio is a paradise.” General Admission tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for keiki ages 2-12. VIP seats are available at $30 for adults, $20 for keiki. Tickets are on sale online at www.alice2016. brownpapertickets.com. Show times are Saturday 2PM and 6PM, and Sunday 2PM. Capturing Summer’s Moments “A picture is worth a thousand words.” But sometimes it can feel like you need to take a thousand pictures to capture what you want to say.
W
hile summertime offers plenty of photo opportunities – with sunny days, family vacations and plenty of outdoor activities – it also presents its own challenges. We’ve rounded up these tips to help you catch the best and brightest shots of your family. • Watch the sun. Shooting into the sun can leave your subjects in shadow, particularly their faces. But there’s nothing like squinty eyes from the brightness to ruin the look. Instead, make the most of overcast days. What seems dreary to you can actually appear better in a photo. • Speaking of the sun, keep track of the time that it rises and sets. The hour or two right after sunrise or before sunset, are prime times for taking pictures. Otherwise, you will find yourself fighting the harshness of summer sunlight. • If you’re using a 35mm camera, decide which lens you will use before going outside. Breezy days and sandy beaches spell danger for an
exposed sensor. You may have to give up that panoramic shot of the field in order to get a good close-up of your player with a telephoto lens. Or you may decide to focus on the landscape during an excursion, using a wide angle lens. If you do have to change lenses while you’re out, try ducking inside a building or car where you’re less likely to have dust blown onto the sensor. • Don’t leave yourself out of the picture. But don’t compromise your safety to be in it. In many families it seems like one person is always behind the camera and rarely in the shots. For this, selfie sticks are a great solution. Unfortunately, they can also be a distraction from the surroundings. Some venues have banned selfie sticks due to people falling or being a nuisance to others. Instead, consider asking a bystander to take the shot for you. Enjoy making memories this summer! With some planning, you’ll have the photos to show for it. LK

Father’s Day: A Day Just For Dad Ever since Richard Nixon signed a proclamation in 1972 making the second Sunday in June Father’s Day, people have been officially honoring their dads on this day. But unlike Mother’s Day, with its traditional flowers, candy and brunches, it can be difficult to know how to celebrate. Since it’s his day, why not make it all about Dad. Here are some ways you can put the spotlight on him: • Ask him in advance his three favorite ways to spend a lazy day. Then make sure your plans for Father’s Day include at least one of those. • Plan a menu of Dad’s top meals. Biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon and eggs for breakfast? Check! Lunch at his favorite hot dog stand? You got it! Steak on the grill with loaded mashed potatoes? Why not! Make it a point to keep Dad (and his stomach) happy all day long. • Give him the gift of time. Thankfully it’s summertime, so you can easily find pastimes to please an outdoor-loving dad. Play ball in the yard or shoot hoops on the drive. Fly a kite in the park. Or play board games at the house. If he likes to work with his hands, offer to work alongside Dad in the garden or in his work-
shop. Communicate to him that he’s important to you by letting him see that you’re happy to be with him, no matter what you’re doing. • Dads can be hard to shop for. Instead of giving him another tie or cologne, why not pick up tickets to the movies or take him out to the arcade for a day of pinball machines and video games. Offer to wash and vacuum his car. Send him the smartphone version of his favorite board game. Give him the digital download of his favorite album. Dads don’t always receive the recognition they deserve, so it’s great that we have a day set aside to focus on him. Use it in a way that best suits the dad in your life. LK

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas
H
ey there spouses everywhere, listen up! Hands down, most moms just want to sleep in, go to the bathroom in peace for one day, and not have to figure out what’s for dinner. It’s really that simple. But moms also love a thoughtful gift on Mother’s Day. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be extravagant or cost a fortune. Here are three ideas that you can create with your kids, that any mom will love for Mother’s Day! For the Reader Mom Take a photo of your little one with his or her arms raised. Get the photo developed (4x6 longways is perfect), and get it laminated at an office supply store. Cut the photo into the shape of a bookmark, pop a hole at the top, add some ribbon so it looks like your child is holding the ribbon, and you have a personalized bookmark. Add in that book she’s been talking about or a gift certificate to a bookstore, and you’re golden.
For the Earthy Mom Create a succulent garden that needs little attention but always looks cool. You can make it in any container found around your house. Try a mason jar, an old mug, a cool bowl, or create one in the crevices in a piece of driftwood. Let your kids add the following “ingredients,” in this order, to the container: 1. Sand 2. Stones 3. Smaller stones 4. Activated charcoal 5. Sphagnum moss 6. Soil 7. Plants and other goodies like seashells For a shallow container like driftwood, it’s okay to only use Sphagnum moss, soil and plants. Water with a spray bottle once a week. For the Sporty Mom Have fun creating a killer playlist for mom to listen to while on her walks or runs, or while working out at the gym. Make it a dance party with the kids, and let them give their “yea” or “nay” for which songs to add. You could even record a message of them cheering mom on and include it in the mix. Throw in a pair of wireless sport headphones or a fun-colored Hydro Flask to complete this workout treat. SB

Summer Hair Care: Tips & Tricks Summer’s here and the beach is calling your name! While spending time outside and in the water is a must for most of us, especially here on Maui, your hair can take a beating from the sun, saltwater and chlorine. Here are a few ways you can combat damage done to your locks and still enjoy your favorite summer activities. • For starters, before entering a chlorinated pool, be sure to rinse your hair in cool water. Then add either coconut oil or hair conditioner, and pull your hair into a braid or bun. This will help prevent your hair from soaking up the chlorine. • If your hair does gain a green tinge from chlorinated pools, you can try using a hair mask made of baking soda to remove the unwanted color. Simply mix about half a cup of baking soda and enough water to form a paste in a bowl. Coat green hair with the paste and massage it into the hair. Rinse with clean water; then wash and style as usual. • If you want to get natural highlights, you can squeeze lemon onto your hair before spending time out in the sun. • For help with dry hair, you can use a coconut oil hair mask to restore moisture and shine. After you shower at night, take a tablespoon of
coconut oil and massage it through your wet hair. Pull your hair up in a braid or bun, and let it dry overnight. (You can wear a shower cap, if you prefer.) In the morning, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner, then style as usual. This moisture treatment should last for one to two weeks, depending on your hair type. • To refresh your hair and leave it smelling great, use this DIY Hair Mist: Pour 1/2 cup distilled water or witch hazel, and add 5 to 10 drops of essential oils, into a small spray bottle. Shake well before use. Simply spray onto your hair for a clean, fresh scent. JP

Exercise Smarts for Teen Brains Keep your teen moving! Studies show that aerobic exercise increases the volume of the hippocampus – that portion of the brain responsible for transferring information into memory. In other words, by being active, a teen can actually impact the structure and performance of his or her brain. In fact, researchers have found that in addition to regular exercise, being active right before performing mental tasks can yield improved results. Some schools have put these findings to work by scheduling physical education classes for struggling students right before their most challenging subject. Your teen might not have that option at school, but he or she can put the same strategy to work at home. Here’s how: • Rather than sitting down to do homework right after walking in the door, encourage your teen to do something active: jog or walk around the block, ride his skateboard, or take a bike ride. Just like priming an engine, he will be warming up his brain for mental work. • Does your teen get frustrated or stressed out over homework? Blowing off steam just might be the answer. Next time your teen hits a
roadblock with an assignment, don’t scold her for stopping. Instead, let her engage in something physical that takes her mind off the frustration and gets her heart pumping. • During seasons of intense study, such as prior to final exams, standardized testing or college admissions tests, help your teen incorporate movement into his study breaks. Suggest that he plan intervals of exercise into his study sessions, like going outside to shoot hoops with a friend after a couple of hours. • Help your teen find an activity she can stick with on a regular basis. Scientists have found that the impact of exercise on the brain is sustained over time. Fitter bodies coincide with fitter brains. LK

News • TreNds • Tips What is Your Aging IQ? BY HEATHER GREENWOOD-JuNKERMEIER Answer: Cancer. The good news is that your risk can be lowered through healthy lifestyles and regular checkups and tests that detect cancer early.
H
ow much do you know about the aging process? Take a couple minutes to answer a few questions of National Institute on Aging’s “Aging IQ Test.” Happy test taking!
Question #1: What is the fastest growing segment of the American population? Answer: Adults over age 85. Today there are approximately 6 million adults over age 85 in the US. But in 2050 when the youngest baby boomer turns 86, that number is expected to reach 20 million! Question #2: What is the number one killer of both men and women in the US? Answer: Heart disease. Many think that heart disease primarily hits men, but everyone is prone to it. The following actions will lower your risk: stop smoking, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, manage blood pressure and cholesterol.
Question #4: What is the leading cause of blindness in the world? Answer: Cataracts. A cataract clouds the eye’s lens and impacts sight. Over half of adults over age 80 in the US either have a cataract or have had one removed. Cataract surgery removes the cataract and replaces it with an artificial lens. Over 90% of patients report improved sight after surgery. But in developing areas of the world where surgery is not possible, cataracts can cause complete blindness. Question #5: True or False. There is an age at which it is advisable to give up driving. Answer: FALSE! In general, drivers over age 65 are safe drivers. However, it’s important to periodically review your driving skills – regardless of your age.
Question #3: What is the number 2 cause of death in the US?
How well did you do on this mini Aging IQ Quiz? The full online quiz includes 28 questions, more detailed answers, and additional resources for those topics you want additional information.
