Our Keiki NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS Creating Summer Traditions Have you ever thought of intentionally starting a new family tradition? Whether it’s something wild and fun, or quiet and meaningful, creating summer traditions can bring family members together in a special and unique way. Here are a few ways to get started. Brainstorm with your family. Asking family members for suggestions to create a new family tradition not only helps generate ideas, it can also be insightful. Our kids can be enterprising and thoughtful, so include them in on the planning stage of your new summer tradition. How about a themed party? When summer arrives, most kids are excited and they are in fun mode. Consider throwing a party as a way of bringing together classmates to celebrate the end of the school year, and as a way of saying goodbye to friends who might be going on trips. Visit a local place of interest. Take out a tourist map, and choose a spot that would be interesting or entertaining for grandma and grandpa as well as uncle and aunty. Perhaps a visit to a local farm or national park could kick off summer vacation and bring generations together.

2018 Pohai Na Keiki Nalu SATURDAY, JUNE 2ND // 7AM START TIME LAUNIUPOKO BEACH PARK, LAHAINA

Organize an outdoor movie. Take advantage of the great weather by hosting an outdoor movie night. Ask friends and neighbors if they’d like to help so that all the responsibilities don’t fall on one family. Creating a family tradition like this can be an easy, lighthearted way to gather together and be outdoors. There’s nothing like looking up at the stars on a summer’s night, too! Cook a summer dish together. Create a dish using seasonal, locally grown ingredients that would appeal to the entire family. If it’s something like fruit salad, perhaps fruit picking at a local farm could be part of the activity. Include your kids in the cooking and the shopping for extra ingredients. Being involved in the whole process helps them feel useful and important! Creating summer traditions that are creative and inspirational can be a meaningful way to stay connected to friends and family, to celebrate the end of the school year, and to rejoice in relationships and life. RG Calling all groms! Get ready for the 2018 Pohai Na Keiki Nalu! The Pohai Na Keiki Nalu (Gathering of the Surf Kids) will be held on Saturday, June 2 at Launiupoko Beach Park in Lahaina. The 25th annual surf competition is for keiki 12 years and younger. There will be age groups for boys and girls in shortboard, longboard, bodyboard, and stand-up paddlng. Starting time will be at 7am. Entry forms will be available at Hi-Tech Surf Sports in Kahului, Paia, and Kihei, and Honolua Surf Co at the Lahaina Cannery. Our Keiki SUMMER CAMP

Choosing the Right Day Camp for Your Keiki

T

he number of summer camps on offer nowadays can be overwhelming. Having a choice can work in your and your keiki’s favor, but how do you narrow it down? Consider the following tips in choosing a camp suitable for your keiki. Comfort or challenge. Some keiki prefer to play within their own comfort zone. An activity that is familiar to them and that they may already be successful with, might be a better match for your keiki. On the other hand, your keiki may be open to stepping into a new activity because they want to be challenged. Either way, consulting them and finding out what they need, can save a lot of tears later on. Camp hours. Consider your keiki’s nature and tolerance level. Long days in the sun for a twoweek period might be too much. Your keiki may benefit from a shorter camp that involves quiet,

Family Day & Auwahi Exhibition Opening! SATURDAY, JUNE 30TH // 10AM–2PM HUI NO’EAU VISUAL ARTS CENTER, MAKAWAO

indoor activities. Taking into account their personality can help narrow down the choice. Also, you may need to enroll help from family or friends if your work schedule conflicts with camp hours. Camp size and age group. Some camps offer small group activities, while others involve larger groups with keiki of varying ages. It’s worth asking the organizers ahead of time about the camp size and age group of the camp goers. Another good question to ask is the ratio of camp leader to keiki. Remember, finding out as much as possible about the smaller details can only benefit your keiki’s camp experience. Costs breaks. If the cost of a camp is beyond your means, ask if they offer financial aid or a sliding scale for payment. Many organizations offer discounts, and with a little research, you may be able to choose the perfect camp for your wallet. Knowing what your keiki needs, asking the right questions, and making adjustments to your schedule as needed, will help you find the perfect camp for your keiki. At the end of the day, a happy camper makes for happy parents! RG Bring the ‘ohana to enjoy a day at the Hui’s historic Kaluanui Estate! Immerse yourself in hands-on art projects, see demos in the Hui’s professional art studios, picnic on the lawn, and view the Hui’s incredible new themed exhibition — a collaboration between the Hui, Auwahi Forest Restoration Project (AFRP), local artists, and 2018 Artist in Residence Mazatl! “Family Day is the perfect opportunity to learn all about the Hui and experience a sample of the exciting art programs we offer for artists of all ages. In addition to hands-on projects and open art studios, this year’s Family Day will unveil a truly incredible art exhibition that the whole family will enjoy,” said Lana Coryell, Senior Programs Manager at Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao. Our Keiki BLOOM

Helping a Quiet Child Bloom BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

T

he dilemma with parenting the quiet child is when to let your child take the lead and how much to push them past their comfort zone. Often shy children have a desire to try new experiences, but the experience may evoke large feelings that overwhelm them. As such, you may see that your sensitive child avoids risks when you know that he would likely enjoy new experiences. Your child needs opportunities to engage in new experiences in small increments that build on each other, creating a momentum based on sequential successes. Your child’s momentum forward will be based on small exposures, paired with a supportive environment and with people your child trusts. It is under these circumstances that you will see your child blossom. Here are some specific strategies: • Expose your child to a wide range of experiences and activities; this gently stretches him by creating a wide pallet of comfortable activities. • Allow your child to observe first; this gives her a sense of control and allows her to see and feel the activity without pressure. Your child may need several exposures before she feels comfortable joining.

• Break activities into small steps and allow your child to achieve success with each step. • Create opportunities for your child to do the successful step repeatedly to build his own sense of his competency. • Expand your child past her success one step at a time. • Let your child know you will progress at their pace–this allows him to feel safe and trust you which will allow him to take risks. • Create a structure that requires participation, but with choices. For example, he needs to engage in one activity after school from a menu of four choices. • Positively reinforce initiation & participation. • Focus on 1-to-1 activities and move to small group as your child feels comfortable. • Have your child take individual lessons or experiences to build confidence before joining a group activity. Help your child embrace their shyness and create strategies to enjoy a rich array of experiences, take risks and achieve their full potential. Simple Steps for a ScreenFree Childhood Creating a screen-free childhood for your children sounds like an impossible task in this day and age. Taking a few steps, though, can help foster an environment that will ensure your child is fulfilled without having to set his or her eyes on a screen or device. Plan your day. This may sound too simplistic, but having a plan of action, especially for those in-between moments, can make a difference in making the day screen-free for your child. Let your child know the plan for that day. It helps them know what to expect and how much time they have.

one out of a hat – hikes, biking adventures, picnics, beach days, visits to the local botanical garden or visitor-friendly farm. Check out your local newspaper or community magazine for ideas on fun outdoor activities for your child. Provide attractive alternatives. Put magazines, books, toys and board games in your child’s area so they have some attractive options for quieter moments in the day. Remember, the idea is to surround them with attractive alternatives to screens!

Don’t be afraid to be the boss. Take charge of your child’s time while you still have a say in their day. When they are older, it will be harder to have a positive influence on how much time they spend on their devices. Once you’ve established boundaries, stick with them!

Take up a new activity with your child. Whether it’s playing guitar, painting, juggling balls, or learning dance moves, take the time to just be with your child in an engaging, fun way.

Take them outside. Ensure they are engaged in the wonders of outdoor life by scheduling some time out of the house and neighborhood. Make the selection of activity fun in itself. Write choices on separate pieces of paper and pick

With a little time, energy and creativity, we can steer our children away from screens. Developing this habit early on in their lives can help ensure less time on a device and more quality time with family and friends. RG

The Benefits of Letting Children Solve Their Own Arguments Problem solving is part of life. Many parents, though, loathe to see their children in confrontational situations. Is stepping in helpful, or is it better to step back and allow them to solve their own arguments? When a child is given space to solve her own problems, she has the opportunity to uncover and question her own beliefs and thoughts. If parents swoop in and decide on what is right or wrong in a given situation, the child is denied the opportunity to decide what’s important for her. Solving a child’s argument can create a needy relationship. If an adult intervenes in an argument, a child might always rely on that adult for back up. Independence is developed when a child understands that he has to find his own resolution in order to move on from the situation. Solving their own problems and arguments prepares children for life as a teenager and as an adult. Effective communication is a life skill that is developed from those early years with

buddies in the sandbox who won’t share, to conflicts in the office with co-workers. Do your child a favor and allow her to find a way to get her ideas across in a clear, effective manner. When a child is left to fight his own argument, he is given an opportunity to witness his own voice and personal power. Confidence and self-esteem flourish in situations where a child is tested, perhaps makes mistakes, but then pulls through. These situations are powerful learning experiences. Fighting your child’s battles denies them practice for the skills we ultimately want them to have. Supporting a child by allowing her to solve her own arguments, provides the perfect arena for healthy growth and development. When she can effectively convey her ideas and beliefs to another person or group of people, the parents can rest assured that letting her fight her own battles as a child was good practice. RG

Little Mirrors: What Our Children Can Teach Us About Ourselves

H

ave you witnessed behaviors or heard words from your children that are familiar? Do you recognize yourself in your children? It is often said that our children are reflections of us. What does that mean, and is it a bad thing? Children are like sponges. They absorb information all day long, whether it’s positive or negative. Since we are our children’s primary role models, we have the most influence over how they act and react. So it makes sense that we would often see them as mini versions of us. With that in mind, let’s consider what might be reflected back to us. Fears. Do you have a fear of taking tests? Does your little one have similar anxiety? This is just one example or situation where a fear that stems from a parent, can be transferred to a child. If you see this early on in their school life, take steps to help them release that fear. Put the test or quiz into context. Perhaps it’s okay to score low on a 2nd grade test. They are just learning and that’s why they go to school. Offer them any insight or wisdom you now have as an adult, and take some of your own advice! Relationship patterns. Do your children fight with each other? Is it similar to your sibling relationships? Take an honest look at your

relationships, and see if there’s an opportunity to make amends in your own friendships or relationships. If you see a better way to communicate with someone after observing your child, use that insight to make better choices yourself. Beliefs. What we believe impacts how we see the world. Discontentment can be rooted in a belief system. If you suspect your child is behaving in a certain way because he or she has picked up on your own outdated personal belief system, take the time to update and shake up that belief. It could be a belief based on religion or gender, or something else that has been deeply ingrained. Childhood. Our children teach us about how we were raised. Being aware of our own childhood experiences sometimes causes us to consciously decide to raise our children differently. Sometimes, though, we operate on automatic pilot and mimic the relationship of our parents. Here, too, is an opportunity to be mindful and honest. Making the choice to change a few aspects in your family’s life can cause a positive shift that can benefit every member. Our children can teach us so much about how we are in this world. What we see may not always be pretty, but taking advantage of the opportunity to live our lives in a positive and conscious way can only be a gift to us all. RG

Our Keiki SUMMER CAMP

The Benefits of Summer Camp Every day, parents invest in their children’s physical, social, emotional and educational wellbeing. When school is out, there’s one place that offers the perfect environment for a child to continue developing: summer camp! Summer camp can give your child the opportunity to stay in a loosely structured environment and routine. Camp is all about having fun with friends, while still following rules that help maintain safety and harmony. Self-esteem is an important building block for happiness in a child’s life. Camps provide opportunities for children to continue developing outside of school and home. Learning, contributing and belonging to a small community, helps children develop their self-esteem. Summer camp also gives children the opportunity to explore new interests and build on ones they may already have. The sense of progression in a hobby, interest or passion can help build a child’s confidence. Being outdoors and in a screen-free environment, a child is more inclined to use his or her imagination. Playing or being active outdoors can feed the soul of any child. It’s the

perfect place for a child to explore, act out roles, and challenge herself outside of the classroom or home. Unless the camp involves technology, it is designed to provide screen-free time for children. Camp ensures that a child is safe, happy and engaged without watching television or playing video games. Whether your child is spending time with a friend or making new friends at camp, the social interaction is important for his wellbeing. Best friends have been found and made at camp. Being brought together by a shared passion or common interest can help nurture long-lasting bonds. Enrolling your child in summer camp has many benefits. Camps provide experiences that can meet a child’s social, creative and physical needs on so many levels. Any parent would agree, at the end of the day, that there’s nothing like a happy and fulfilled child. RG

Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui is presenting the third annual Battle of the Badges flag football game between the Maui Police Department and the Maui Fire Department. Doors open at 6 p.m., but you’ll want to come early to watch teams from two Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui Clubhouses compete for their own championship title! Entry is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 6-12, with 5 and under free. Or you can buy a specially-designed t-shirt for $20, which includes entry. Baby Keiki NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS Bringing Home Baby You’ve been waiting for this moment for the last nine months, and alas, it is here. You are bringing home your baby! Get prepared for this special, albeit exhausting, time of life with the following tips. Learn the art of the swaddle and stock up on receiving blankets to keep your baby feeling secure, cozy and happy. Ask a nurse or mama friend to show you how to best swaddle a baby. Be ready to feed the baby every three hours, sometimes more often, if breastfeeding. Pump an extra bottle during the day so that you can give at least one of the nighttime feedings to your partner, allowing you to catch a little bit of extra sleep. Make the baby and yourself the top priority for the first six weeks. As you and your baby bond, you are learning each other’s habits and personalities, as well as establishing your milk flow, if nursing. Ensuring that your baby receives plenty of nutrients, rest and love, is more important than anything else. Making

The Hanai Project: Foster Care Awareness WEDNESDAY, MAY 23RD // 5PM–6PM // CORNER OF KANE ST. & KA’AHUMANU AVE., KAHULUI While the word Hānai has adopted a loose term for an adult or child you consider and care for as family, Hānai literally means ‘foster child’ in Hawaiian. It’s common to think of fostering with the sole intention of adoption, or to hold negative thoughts towards

sure that you also eat plenty of food, stay hydrated and get some rest, is essential to healing after delivery. Maui mom Tiffany Anderson shared how she prepared to bring home her two sons as newborns: “I love a good list. I searched Pinterest high and low for ‘newborn essentials’ and the ‘ultimate hospital bag’ lists. And really, most of that was for me. Newborns mainly need their family. They need you. And then there’s a different kind of list – the ‘I will never (fill in the blank) as a parent’ list. For instance, ‘I will never leave the house with spit-up on my shirt’ or ‘I will never give my baby a pacifier.’” (Find Tiffany on Instagram @tiffany.rene. anderson) JP their struggling parents. But to maintain a heart that hopes for reunification, to hope for restoration of health and relationships is the goal of foster care. Seafarer Child has organized ‘The Hānai Project’ to help raise awareness for our island’s foster needs and to begin this conversation in our community. They have committed to donating 50% of all profits from the Hānai trucker hats to Partners In Development Foundation’s Hui Ho’omalu Foster Care program. All proceeds earned will be used for events that directly support Hawai‘i’s foster keiki and the resource families who care for them. Visit seafarerchild.com/hanai to purchase your Hānai trucker hats or to learn other tangible ways of how you can help our state’s 1,500 foster children and their care families. In light of Foster Care Awareness Month, wear your hats and join in for the sign-waving event on May 23rd from 5PM–6PM at the corner of Kane St. and Ka‘ahumanu Ave. See you there!

Baby Keiki NEW DAD

Nurturing New Fathers Through the Postpartum Shift BY JADE HOLTER

N

owadays new fathers are more involved with everyday childrearing than in the past, but there is little recognition of the postpartum adjustment period and need for self care for these fathers. Consequently, some new dads can be left feeling unprepared for fatherhood. Sometimes a new father needs to take time for himself to de-stress, but often his needs are unmet as he does not know how to verbalize them. In our society men are sometimes taught not to express their emotions. Having somebody to talk to who can relate to the challenges and joys of having a new baby can help. Finding other new dads and befriending them is a good way to start. Nurturing another human can be very demanding, and while dad is supporting the new mother, it is important that he does not forget to take care of himself. Dads can practice self care by eating a healthy diet and not letting caffeine and empty calories replace food. Skin-to-skin and eye-to-eye contact in the first few weeks can be especially beneficial to baby while helping new dads bond with their

newborns. Some ways that a father can bond with his baby are by getting involved with baby care and learning about behavior cues, which will help build confidence as a new parent. Baby care provides never ending opportunities to bond and can be plenty of fun. For instance, dad could sing a special song at diaper time that will help baby look forward to being on the changing table. Baby wearing gives dad the ability to provide comfort and physical connection, while being hands free. Taking older siblings and baby out for a walk can be a great way to get some fresh air and energy, or in the mornings when baby is alert and ready to play. Baby Keiki SAFETY

Hidden Playground Parasites Playgrounds offer kids a safe place to enjoy the outdoors and play together. However, hidden parasites that you are unaware of may be lurking at the local park. One of the main places germs reside is in sandboxes. According to a report on cbsnews.com, “Unlike playground equipment or plain dirt – places that are teeming with germs that are generally harmless to humans and can even help strengthen a child’s immune system – sandboxes are rife with parasitic germs that can cause severe infections including Baylisascariasis (raccoon roundworm), toxocariasis and toxoplasmosis.” (Amy Kraft, “Health Hazards Lurking in the Sandbox”). Sandboxes attract animals such as feral cats and raccoons, who often use them as litter boxes. The parasitic germs may then be transmitted to your child if he or she eats the sand from the box. It is highly recommended to avoid sandboxes, unless they are kept covered at night and cleaned out regularly. Some of the effects of these parasites may include headaches, coughing, pain in the

abdominal region, behavioral or psychiatric problems, and sometimes no symptoms are displayed at all. You can help protect your child on the playground. While it is difficult to protect against parasites if your child ingests sand, following good hygiene in general may eliminate other possible ailments. Prior to letting your child play on the equipment, wipe down the surfaces with a baby wipe or sanitizer wipe. After your child plays, ensure that he or she washes his or her hands with soap and water. If an injury occurs at the playground, such as a scraped knee, it is best to take care of it right away – have a small emergency kit on hand with bandages, alcohol pads and antibacterial ointment to keep germs at bay. Avoiding sandboxes and using good hygiene makes it more likely that you and your child will stay healthy and safe while enjoying the playground. JP on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol, which airs on Nickelodeon, will visit the Maui Arts & Cultural Center July 13-15. PAW Patrol Live! brings everybody’s favorite pups to the stage for an actionpacked, high-energy, musical adventure. When Mayor Goodway goes missing during the day of The Great Adventure Bay Race, the pups come to the rescue. PAW Patrol Live! shows that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” and shares lessons for all ages about citizenship, social skills and problemsolving as the characters each use their unique skills and teamwork. The show includes two acts and an intermission, and engages audiences with Bunraku puppetry, an innovative costuming approach that brings the PAW Patrol characters to life on stage with their vehicles and packs. Join Ryder, Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma, Skye and Everest when they visit Maui. Tickets for all six performances are on sale now and can be purchased at MauiArts.org or by phone at 808-242-SHOW (7469).

Family Fun in the Sun L

iving on Maui, we experience an endless “summer”; and finding fun is not difficult to accomplish here! In addition to the many beautiful beaches that can be explored, there are other activities your family can enjoy as well. Jessica Johnson, Maui mom of two (mauiohanaphotography.com), shared, “When the summer surf is down and the waves are quiet, our family likes to put on our adventure hats. We pack a bunch of snacks and water for the day, and we head out with one goal: go somewhere we have never gone before. I will usually scan Google maps to get some ideas depending on where the weather is best, and there are so many hidden treasures right under our noses here on Maui! You might end up beachcombing at a beach you’ve never stopped at, fairy hunting on a trail you’ve never hiked, or flying a kite at a park you’ve never noticed before. I love to encourage my keiki to get out of their comfort zone and explore new places.”

Amelia Vandament, Maui mom of two (Instagram @ameliahairandmakeup), shared, “We love to venture out of Kihei on the weekends to Lahaina for lunch and the splash pad at Whalers Village. Then we head to Kapalua Bay for sunset.” Here are a few more ways you can have fun in the sun with your family: • Head to the local pool. They are free for the community to enjoy! • Make homemade popsicles together. • Ride your bikes and scooters at the local park. • Have a picnic at the beach or park. • Watch the sunset from Haleakala. • Use sidewalk chalk to draw something interesting together. • Play basketball outside as a family. • Play water balloon baseball. • Host a Fourth of July barbecue. • Enjoy the splash pad at the Maui Mall. • Explore Iao Valley. • Attend an outdoor movie night. Ohana TECHNOLOGY

Must-Have Phone Apps for Parents Whether you love it or hate it, phones play a significant role in the lives of parents in the modern world. With access to technology that can fit into your pocket, it is helpful to know which apps may benefit you as a parent. From chore charts to child safety, to finding ways to limit distractions, there is an app for that! According to an article on mamanatural.com, “The average adult spends approximately 5 hours a day on his/her devices.” If you find yourself distracted by your phone or tablet, you may consider one of the following apps to help you focus. The “Quality Time” app for Android users allows you to get to know your smartphone habits. You can see which apps consumed the most time, and which apps were most addictive based on the number of times you accessed them. For iPhone users, the “Family Time” app allows you to understand your smartphone habits, and offers app blockers to help eliminate distractions for both parents and children. It also provides location tracking for the family. In regard to child safety, “Net Nanny” is an app that allows you to protect your child from the dangers of the Internet. It provides time

management tools, social media monitoring, and alerts for alarming keyword searches. “Teen Safe” is another app that takes safety a step further. It allows you to see text messages, web searches and phone calls, and it also can track your child with GPS. If your child is driving, you can lock the phone to help eliminate distracted driving. If tackling chores is high on your list, then the following apps may help you get your child involved as well! The “Chore Monster” app allows you to create scheduled chores with point values. As your child completes each task, he or she is rewarded with points and can earn anything from money to a fun excursion. The “Homey” app allows you to create scheduled chores, but it also helps your child learn financial skills by earning an allowance for completing the chores. JP

The St. Joseph Feast is an Upcountry, Maui tradition that started in 1950. Our annual Feast features great entertainment, delicious food such as portuguese soup, waffle dogs, chow fun, nachos, BBQ teriyaki, hamburgers and lots of sweets and treats. On Friday & Saturday evening at 7 p.m. there will be a live valuable goods auction featuring golfing, gift certificates to dinner, hotels and activities, and more - all donated by businesses throughout the state. Games, bouncers, crafters, country store, plants, produce, flowers and lots more to see and enjoy. This year the St. Joseph Feast is a fundraiser that supports the new Multi-Purpose center to replace the dilapidated gym that is used for the Early Learning Center and community functions. So mark your calendar and come up to beautiful Makawao (1294 Makawao Avenue) and enjoy the St. Joseph Feast.

Gift Ideas for Dad

H

onoring dad on Father’s Day is a special way to say “thank you” for all that he does throughout the year. Here are a few ways to celebrate him, and some gift ideas that he will treasure for years to come. For the meat lover dad, gift him all things “grill” – new grilling utensils, a barbecue recipe book, or bottled marinades. For the active dad, gift him with a day of adventure. Whether you plan it yourself or book an outdoor excursion, he is sure to appreciate the time to be outside and get moving! For the philosopher dad, gift him a trip to the local bookstore and an afternoon of quiet for reading and contemplation. For the sentimental dad, gift him with a handmade card from your child or a ceramic plate with painted handprints.

Disney’s The Lion King Jr. THURSDAY, JULY 26TH–SUNDAY, JULY 29TH ‘A’ALI’IKUHONUA CREATIVE ARTS CENTER, SEABURY HALL, 480 OLINDA RD., MAKAWAO

Tiffany Anderson, Maui mom and essential oil enthusiast, shared a simple recipe to make for dad. She said, “It’s so fun to make and give presents that are purposeful, and that make dad smile. I love to bring my kids along to make DIY gifts with our hands that show our love and make the world’s greatest farter – errr, I mean father – laugh.” One of her favorites is this recipe: Poo-pourri Spray Supplies / Ingredients: 2 ounce glass spray bottle, 2 ounces of witch hazel, and 30 drops of odor eliminating essential oils such as lemongrass and peppermint. Directions: Fill the bottle, shake it up, and it’s ready to go. Anderson added, “Sometimes it’s the little things and a good dose of laughter that really pull the heartstrings.” (Find Tiffany and more fun recipes on Instagram @tiffany.rene.anderson) However you choose to honor dad this Father’s Day, remember that food goes a long way. When in doubt, a plate of doughnuts and time to relax are sure to please. Ohana TIPS

How to Have a Successful Rummage Sale

S

ummertime often coincides with big garage clean-outs, as you may have more time on your hands to declutter your space from all the things that accumulated throughout the year. If you are considering hosting a rummage sale, follow these tips to help make it a successful one: Gather your supplies. In addition to sorting through your belongings and selecting which ones to sell, you will need a few basic supplies to keep you organized through the rummage sale. You will need yard sale signs, price stickers, portable tables, a receipt book, fanny pack for change, dollar bills and coins for change, and a couple of chairs for you and your helper. Enlist help. Ask a family member or friend to help you set up and stay through the sale, so that one person is available to answer questions and another person is able to check out customers.

Organize the items for sale. Use tables to separate items into categories. Hang up clothing using hangers on a clothesline to make it easier for customers to sort through. Keep items off the ground, other than larger pieces like furniture. By creating an organized space, you are making it easier for customers to find items that they want. And they may purchase more if they can see the items more clearly. Spread the word. Buy or make neatly written rummage sale signs. Be sure to post them in locations that are easily seen by those passing through the area. Share via your social media channels, where appropriate, and list your sale on craigslist.org as well. After the rummage sale, be sure to remove all of your signs. You may wish to list items for free on craigslist.org, or arrange for a non-profit organization to pick up larger ticket items. With some preparation, organization and communication, your summer rummage sale should be a success! JP

Starting this year, the sanctuary’s Visitor Center in Kīhei will be open the last Saturday of every month. Situated on the south shore of Maui with picturesque views, the center offers exhibits, interactive displays, keiki activities, and more, with the aim to teach people about humpback whales and their habitat in Hawai’i. Mother’s Day Celebrations & Gifts She Will Treasure Mom gives all year long, and Mother’s Day is the one day we can honor her with special celebrations and gifts she will treasure. For the active mom, plan a day of adventure with her and the family. For the mom looking for calm and quiet, block out time in the day for her to be alone. Take the kids to the park and let mom have the house to herself. For the extrovert mom, give her time out with her friends. Tara Gray, Maui mom and owner of Mini Maven Social (minimavensocial.com), shared her tips for Mother’s Day. “Make some lasting memories together with projects that will remind mom every day how much you love her. Create an art project together that mom can keep on her favorite shelf. Or do some gardening together. Instead of buying a bouquet of flowers that only lasts a few days, plant some seeds in the garden and watch them grow all summer.” She continued, “Keep an eye open for a great ‘mom and me’ event, being held at Sun Days Maui, to celebrate Mother’s Day.” Another Maui mom and essential oil enthusiast, Tiffany Anderson, shared a favorite recipe to make for mom:

Five Minute Lip Balm Ingredients: 5 Tablespoons coconut oil, 3 Tablespoons beeswax, 15 drops of therapeutic grade A essential oil (suggested essential oils include peppermint, lavender, frankincense, lemon, rosemary, cinnamon or orange) Directions: Melt coconut oil and beeswax in the microwave at 10-second intervals, and stir. Or, mix and melt in a pot on low-medium heat. Once it’s melted, take off heat, add the essential oils, and then pour into your lip balm containers. Easy peasy! Anderson continued, “It’s so fun to make and give presents that are beautiful, purposeful and meaningful. I love to bring my kids along to make DIY gifts with our hands that show our love and make tutu and all the mama bears in our lives happier and healthier.” (Find Tiffany and more fun recipes on Instagram @tiffany. rene.anderson) JP the keiki look into their neighbor’s window to say hello to their friends, their “grandmas and grandpas.” One of the best times of day is when keiki spend time creating deep friendships and being enriched by the interactions they share with their grandmas and grandpas. Together, they create memories that will be held fondly, with activities such as storytelling and reading, creating art, and of course everyone’s favoritesinging and dancing. Research has shown that these interactions enhance children’s social and personal development. It is through these treasured interactions that they create unique and priceless moments that put a smile on everyone’s face. To learn more call (808) 242-5437 or visit kanshapreschool.net.

5 Things To Do For Yourself This Summer

E

veryone needs time to recharge his or her batteries. When you feel refreshed and strong, you are better able to serve your family and avoid burnout. Below are five things you can do for yourself this summer. 1. Exercise. Though exercise may sound more like work than something rejuvenating, if you find something you enjoy that also gets you moving, it truly becomes a refreshing part of your life. Try something different – perhaps a hip hop dance class or water aerobics class. If team sports is more up your alley, join a team. Maybe you have always wanted to learn how to surf or stand-up paddle board. Lessons are offered across the island and you probably have a friend willing to teach you as well! Jessica Johnson, Maui mom of two daughters (mauiohanaphotography.com), shared her thoughts on taking time for yourself: “Try an aerial yoga class at the beautiful Hotel

Wailea with Uplift Maui. For one hour you are suspended from the ceiling in a silk aerial yoga sling. Aerial yoga allows you to move more freely as you’ll use the sling to counterbalance your weight, and it is a great way to relieve tension on your muscles and bones! I always leave feeling refreshed and re-energized. If you’re up for a challenge, try the aerial yoga for strength class – it’s a killer workout!” 2. Enjoy a spa day. Whether you book a spa treatment at a resort or create your own athome spa, take the time to pamper yourself. Draw a nice warm bath with epsom salts and your favorite essential oils to relax and wind down from a long day. 3. Get a pedicure. Let someone else massage your tired feet and paint your nails a happy color. 4. Go on an adventure. Grab your best friend and hit a favorite hiking spot together. 5. Journal. Head to a local coffee shop with your paper and pen for a time of dreaming, brainstorming and writing all that you are grateful for. Be sure to include that you are grateful for time to yourself! JP

Ohana RELATIONSHIPS

How to Get Close to Your Partner Getting close to your partner to strengthen your relationship, while giving him or her space, can be tricky. But there are some small things that can go far in creating a wellbalanced and healthy personal relationship. Shake up date night by putting some thought into how you can spend an evening together. Rather than going to a restaurant, choose the perfect spot to have a picnic with a selection of food that has special significance for you both. Sign up for the gym, a new dance class, or a new sport together. Working up a sweat with some good old-fashioned exercise can help bring couples together. Ask each other personal questions. Dig deep and show an interest in the person you’re committed to. Making them feel valued and interesting can help them feel “seen,” and that goes a long way in relationships. Don’t be surprised if your questions and attention are reciprocated! Cooking together can transform a seemingly mundane task into a fun activity that brings you closer to your partner. Get creative and pick a new dish or theme and have fun.

Ultimate Air Maui

Sitting next to your partner may sound like an insignificant action. But this simple act shows your partner how physical proximity brings you joy and pleasure. Throw some eye gazing into it and the connection can feel deeper and more meaningful. Calling your partner rather than texting is the way to go. A telephone conversation is not only a good way to get clear communication, but can help convey the way you feel about the person. There’s nothing like the warm tone of your partner’s voice on the other end of the line! Being close to your partner requires a little thought and creativity. The rewards are that the increase in quality of attention can make you both feel good, and feel good about each other. It’s a win-win situation. JP Ultimate Air Maui, Maui’s only indoor trampoline park, is now open! Ultimate Air is the #1 choice for family fun and active entertainment. There is 15,000 sq ft of trampoline surfaces with activities like foam pits, extreme trampoline, basketball, extreme dodge ball, jousting, freestyle court, and a keiki court. Ultimate Air Maui is the perfect venue for birthday parties, school/church groups and corporate events. We can also customize your private event! Ultimate Air offers fitness classes, toddler time and Ultimate Air Cares, a sensory-friendly night for children and adults with special needs and disabilities. Ohana RECHARGE

Create a Portable Comfort Zone While parenting is fulfilling and fun, it can exhaust and deplete even the most energetic parent. If you feel like you need a quick and easy pick-me-up, try some of the following ideas. Incorporating a few of them into your day or week could even prevent ‘parent burnout.’ Meditate. Try closing your eyes for a few minutes. Say goodbye to the rest of the world, relax your entire body, and stay there for as long as you can. Turning off the internal chatter is key. Shifting your attention within, to your own sacred personal space, can be restorative and energizing. Whether it’s for 5 minutes or 25 minutes, make sure this time is for you and only you. Take a hot bath. Soaking in your favorite oil, bubble bath, or aromatic salt can do wonders for the mind and body. That alone time reaches deep into the body’s muscles and allows for relaxation on a profound level. To make it even better, put on your favorite pajamas once you come out and savor just how good you feel in that moment.

Watch or read some comedy. There’s something about a deep belly laugh that yanks you out of whatever stressful or tiring situation you feel you’re in. Laughter can transport you to a joyful, simple place where the lighter side of life is illuminated. Go there…often! Dance. Crank up your favorite music, and shake that booty. Letting loose to music and even joining in to sing if you know the words, are fun ways to unwind and work out a stressed body. Slow or fast, dancing to music can open the heart center and reconnect you with your inner self. Taking care of yourself is about honoring your personal needs. It can go a long way to relaxing and energizing your body and mind. And taking some time out makes it much easier to go about your day with a more balanced, healthy outlook. RG Enjoy glorious Upcountry Maui’s favorite springtime event. ife will sometimes throw us a curveball. It’s part of what we call being human. So when disappointments come our way, how can we move forward gracefully and authentically? If plan A didn’t work out for your life, sit with it for a little while. Take the time and space to allow whatever emotions you are feeling to arise. From that place, ask yourself what expectations you had and why. The answers that come back may surprise you. Perhaps your expectations were higher than what was realistic or reasonable in that situation. Focusing on our failures can lead us to feel lonely. The truth is that all of us face unexpected situations or a change of events sometime during our lives. Understanding that we are never truly alone in the world can help brighten our day. Talk to someone, reach out to an organization for help, make a new

friend – do whatever you feel deep down inside would help you, even if it’s as small as coffee with a girlfriend. You have probably seen in your life that when one door closes, another opens. Trust that whatever expectations you had that didn’t come to fruition, weren’t meant to be. For some reason, the universe had different plans for you. Let it go and be willing to embrace a change in direction. We all have the power to make choices, and the choices you’ve made thus far have led you to where you are now. However, we are never in total control over all the events in our lives. Believing that we are in control of everything can lead to frustration and a sense of failure. Do yourself a favor and say goodbye to control and hello to the natural flow of life. The one thing that we can control in life is how we react to things. If your path has been unexpectedly disrupted, take positive steps to acknowledge the event, trust that you will be okay, and accept what life brings to you. Who said life was meant to be perfect, anyway? RG

An new high school has come to Wailuku town. Maui Christian Academy provides an innovative, quality, Christian education for your 9–12 graders, and is fully accredited by both WASC and ACSI. MCA is the high school branch of the Doris Todd Christian Academy, and began on the Paia campus in 2014. With a vision to be more accessible to Maui families, MCA made the move to the central valley in August, 2017. MCA is a safe, nurturing, learning environment that uses a blended model of on-site teachers who hold regular classes, and computer-based learning, which allows students to work at their own pace. This frees students up for opportunities to work or travel without getting behind. MCA is located at 473 High Street (just north of Wailuku Elementary School). For enrollment information, or to schedule a tour, call our office at 579-9237.
