GIFTS KIDS CAN MAKE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

9 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Our Keiki GIVING Making holiday gifts with your kids can be a meaningful activity and a wonderful way of sharing the holiday spirit. If you need some inspiration, here are a few suggestions for fun and creative handmade gifts. Revive the handwritten letter! Decorate plain paper or blank note card with colored pens and a few heartfelt words. The recipient will be touched, and the sender may also receive a piece of mail in return. Beaded bookmarks are the perfect gift for bookworms – young and old. Your child can personalize the bookmark by picking beading cord and beads in the recipient’s favorite colors. Don’t forget teachers and librarians – they are sure to appreciate this thoughtful yet practical present. A wooden bead key chain is a great gift for all the drivers in your child’s family, and also for your teen’s friends who are getting their licenses. If your kids can

Holoholo Ka'a SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH // 4PM–8PM 310 W. KAAHUMANU AVE., KAHULUI

string finished or unfinished wooden beads onto faux leather cording, they can create these custom keychains. Handcrafted notebooks make for useful, affordable gifts. The notebook can be a composition book or journal. Use watercolors to create unique designs on thick watercolor paper for the front and back covers. Cover the notebook with the custom cover and voila! Christmas cards recycled from old school art projects are one-of-a-kind. Do you have stacks of artwork from your child’s school? Recycle them by taking your favorite ones and turning them into Christmas cards. It’s a spin on the traditional card and is a way of sharing your child’s artwork with family members. Collage boards, filled with words and images that describe the recipient, can be a fun and very personal gift from a child to an adult. Ask your child to write words or glue pictures on card stock that sum up what that person means to them. Don’t be surprised if grandma is teary as she reads her grandchild’s thoughts about her. There’s nothing like giving a personalized gift. Making a handcrafted item can be fun and meaningful. All it takes is a handful of materials and a creative mind. The joy of seeing the gift being opened is always worth it! Holoholo Ka‘a is a hands-on event where kids and kids at heart can climb aboard, pretend to drive, and take photos in emergency vehicles, heavy machinery, farm equipment, buses, and much more! Local businesses, public utilities, nonprofits, and government agencies showcase their vehicles while sharing their knowledge of duties and operating skills. The event is held on the first Sunday of November at UHMC parking lot from 9am-1pm. Admission is $1; food and drink will be available for purchase. The event is hosted by Pūnana Leo o Maui, a Hawaiian language immersion preschool in Wailuku. Opened in 1988, Pūnana Leo o Maui has educated over 1,000 children ages 3–5. From the moment a Pūnana Leo 'ohana (family) enters preschool, they are immersed in a rich and stimulating honua (environment) where all must observe the kapu of “Hawaiian language only.” The observance of the kapu helps families and their children learn Hawaiian quickly. New preschoolers learn simple phrases, sentences, and songs with the help of fluent kumu (teachers) and older classmates. Many, if not all, Pūnana Leo preschoolers are able to speak Hawaiian within three or four months.

Our Keiki CONFIDENCE

Nurturing Confident Decision Makers M

aking decisions is part of life. The sooner your child is making choices, the sooner she will learn how to make good choices and feel confident in herself. To support your child in this process, here are some things to consider. Feelings and thoughts drive our choices. Encourage your child to express his feelings and act upon them. Once your child has made the connection between thoughts and action, he will grow in his ability to make decisions. Give your child choices. When a child is given a choice, she can begin to experiment with decision making. Present a number of acceptable choices. Breakfast is a great place to start. Your pantry or refrigerator will be full of choices. Don’t intervene in her decision-making process. If you always make choices for her, she will always rely on you.

Teach your child about consequences. Making a decision that ultimately did not work out well is an important exercise. Refrain from telling your child off if they didn’t make the best decision. Living with consequences is part of life and your child needs to learn this valuable lesson. Give your child feedback by praising him when he makes a decision. The encouragement will help him gain confidence in his ability to decide on something. For example, praise him for his decision to wear tennis shoes rather than slippers to the mall because they are more comfortable for walking distances. Include your children in family discussions. Allowing your children to take part in a discussion with family members can be empowering for them. To know that their thoughts or opinions are important, is to know that they matter. By providing guidance, choices and reasonable consequences, you can foster a strong confidence in your child’s ability to make a decision. You’ll know you’ve done your job as a parent and they’ll feel empowered and self-assured.

Our Keiki ATTACHMENT

How to Foster Robust Attachment with Your Child BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

Y

our relationship with your child creates the platform for all of your child’s future relationships. It’s simple and yet overwhelming. Our goal as a parent is to foster “secure attachment” with our child. This means that your child feels emotionally secure in their relationship with you such that they can go out into the world and feel confident, and then come back to you when they want (or need) to emotionally connect with you. The following are specific daily strategies that will support secure attachment with your child: • Start your child’s day with loving affect, which may include your facial expression, your body language, your words and your physical affection. • Create a dedicated play time with your child daily, where you follow your child’s lead and engage in shared pleasurable activities. No multi-tasking. This play together is literally the emotional ‘glue’ that will grow your relationship. • Minimize screen time and maximize engagement with people, creative play, and daily household tasks together. • Become a master at reading your child’s nonverbal cues.

• Be consistently present and available to reflect and process your child’s emotions. • Be empathetic to your child’s emotions (even if you don’t agree with their actions). Your child wants to feel understood by you. • Foster your child’s expression of a wide range of emotions. • Use your affect to support your child to calm when he has heightened emotions. • Slow down the pace of your day and week. Don’t overschedule so you can be available to share and process daily events together. • Help your child problem-solve around her daily emotions. This gives her the experience and skills to navigate the world when you aren’t there. • Create a positive home environment. • Cultivate daily and weekly shared rituals with your child that are pleasurable. • Be aware of your own background and the way you were parented, and be deliberate about including the strategies that will foster a secure attachment with your child. Kiegan Blake is an Occupational Therapist, Behavioral Specialist and Director of Maui Center For Child Development. For more information, please call (808) 873-7700 or visit MauiChildDevelopment.com

Our Keiki HOMESCHOOL

Five Reasons to Homeschool at the Preschool Level BY LORI BETH AULDRIDGE, M.A., M.F.A.

C

hildren are born ready to learn. Formal learning doesn’t have to start in kindergarten. You can implement the guided lessons from a homeschool curriculum for preschool age children as well. Here are five reasons to consider starting your homeschool journey before kindergarten. 1. Practice. If you’re contemplating homeschooling your child long-term, starting between the ages of 2 to 4 gives you the opportunity to try it on for size. It’s a way to slowly delve into all the areas of homeschooling, including record keeping and figuring out your teaching style, frustrations, strengths, triggers, etc. – giving you the opportunity to start working on them before your child enters the required ages/grades for school. It also exposes you to the world of homeschooling and the amazing support groups that come along with it. 2. Habit. Preschoolers are naturally eager learners. This is your chance to make school a family habit so that it becomes part of your everyday life. Creating the time and space in your daily schedule to

include fun and dynamic homeschool lessons, sets your children up for success and encourages a positive attitude toward learning. 3. Everything is Learning. A child’s brain grows more rapidly in the first five years than at any other time. Take advantage of this window. Once you start homeschooling, you will quickly see that learning is everywhere. Every interaction, errand, walk or meal – everything! – contains the opportunity for learning. 4. Guidance. Following a curriculum gives you access to resources like teacher guides and age-appropriate activities. Many teach you how to teach your child at his or her current age. There is a whole world of teaching and homeschooling support online and in person; starting your journey before kindergarten exposes you to those resources earlier. 5. Connection. Homeschooling naturally creates a slower pace of life and provides you the opportunity to form a special bond with your child. Having the ‘excuse’ of homeschool to slow down is a gift. The one-on-one interaction of teaching your child creates the opportunity for deeper connection as everyone learns together, side by side. Lori Beth Auldridge, M.A., M.F.A. is a homeschooling mom of three on Maui. Follow her homeschool journey at www.yayamamas.com.

Our Keiki SCHOOL SUCCESS

Tips to Prevent Student Burnout Student burnout is a real phenomenon. Its symptoms are varied, and can include fatigue, headaches and depression. If you are concerned your child is showing some of these signs, encourage him or her to follow some of these suggestions: Do something physical. Encourage your child to do something physical outdoors. Give her a choice of activities and join her if you can. Being active in a fun, non-competitive environment may be the way to go. Do something fun or out-of-the-box. Suggest catching a comedy at the movie theater, sharing a beach picnic at sunset, or eating dinner at his favorite place to take his mind off school and studying. The idea is to change the scene and encourage him to switch off. Don’t push yourself if you know you don’t have to. For older teens, prioritizing assignments can help reduce stress. If your child is jumping ahead so she can have a free weekend and it’s causing anxiety, remind her to pace herself. Get enough sleep. A lot of changes take place in young bodies, especially around puberty. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep

Alexander Academy of Performing Arts Holiday of Dance SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16TH 11AM, 12:30PM, 2:30PM, & 4PM 870 HALI'IMAILE RD., HALI'IMAILE

for his needs. Forget about his friends’ sleeping habits or what the books say. Encourage him to sleep as long as he feels the need. Create technology-free time. Make sure the devices are switched off and out of sight. Too many teens have their cell phones charging overnight in their bedrooms. Any alert or vibration can affect the quality of sleep or rest your teen is getting. Eat healthy foods. Enforce a healthy diet only as much as possible. Our kids’ bodies need a broad range of vitamins and minerals to stay fit and healthy, and to allow optimum output. Make sure they have a reduced sugar diet and watch out for the sodas. Water is best! Helping your child stay on track at school in a balanced, healthy way can help prevent burnout. With a few simple breaks throughout the day, healthy foods, and some fun thrown in, students can learn to relax and laugh a lot more. The upcountry dance studio will hold its annual community performance, Holiday of Dance, at the AAPA studios located 870 Hali’imaile Road. Dancers of all ages will perform classical pieces from the Nutcracker ballet along with winter and holiday inspired choreography in contemporary, jazz, tap and break dance styles. This 45-minute show is a wonderful opportunity for fans to enjoy a holiday community performance, current students to share what they have learned, and for prospective students to see the variety of classes on offer. Suggested donations of $5 for keiki, $10 for adults. Lap children ages 2 and under are free. Concessions will be sold as a fundraiser for the studio’s full-length production in the spring. Our Keiki COMMUNITY EVENTS

Keiki Whale Watch with Pacific Whale Foundation JANUARY THROUGH APRIL Each whale season during the months of January through April, Pacific Whale Foundation offers a Keiki Whalewatch program for both local and visiting school groups that reaches more than 3,000 students each year. With the goal of developing a generation of leaders who know and care for the marine environment, the program offers a highly subsidized opportunity for schoolchildren to learn about whales living wild in their natural habitat. Featuring a customized whalewatch ecotour and an optional classroom program with standards-based, grade-level appropriate, hands-on activities for students, the program is open to school groups from pre-K to high school. For many participants, this is their first time seeing humpback whales from a boat. In January of 2018, we were able to offer this program to students on Molokai and Lanai for the first time ever, thanks to a generous donation from the Servco Foundation. Through the Pacific Whale Foundation 2018 Online Auction, we hope to sustain this program into 2019 and to help ensure that all Maui County children are able to enjoy outdoor environmental education programs. Our goal is to make this program accessible to all Hawaii students.

Through charitable support, registration fees for Keiki Whalewatch are currently $8 per student, $15 per adult chaperone, and there is no charge for the classroom teacher and/or EA. Program costs are heavily subsidized by the support of Pacific Whale Foundation Members and generous donors. The Pacific Whale Foundation 2018 Online Auction will be open for bidding November 10-19, 2018. Visit pacificwhale.org and subscribe to email updates for more.

Parenting Tips For Ages 0–5 The first five years of parenting can be bitter sweet. Our children can be the biggest source of both joy and frustration. If you are experiencing challenges or just need some tips to help you survive these early years, read on. Give your child firm boundaries in a loving way. Say “no” to your child and offer an explanation or alternative. This will help them know what is not acceptable, while allowing them some freedom of choice. Toddlers often want to have things their way, but letting them know you are still in charge helps define the world they are trying to navigate. Join a baby group. Search local media and bulletin boards in your neighborhood for a baby/ toddler group you can join. Sharing your trials and tribulations can help you feel ‘normal’ and provide you with an opportunity to be in an environment that is supportive and informative.

Recharge your own batteries. Taking time out of parenting is essential for you, and also for your child and family. Responding to your need to do something relaxing, fun or entertaining, can help you feel refreshed and revitalized. Stepping back into the toddler trenches with renewed energy is a winner for all concerned. Relax into parenting. Realize that these early years can be challenging but special in their own way. If your two-year-old child is being difficult, know that it’s an indication that they are only testing the waters. Once they’ve figured things out, they will move on. Breathe through the moment and try to see the lighter side of the journey that you both are on. Seek help if necessary. If you’re feeling overwhelmed to the point where nothing you’ve tried is helping, seek advice. Call your doctor and make it a priority to address the issue. Letting a situation develop so it becomes unbearable is good for no one! The relationship between a parent and young child can be challenging, but with support from other parents, time off, and loving boundaries, your time together can be joyful.

Baby Keiki BABY BLUES

Postpartum Myth Busters BY JADE HOLTER

M

yth: Postpartum depression happens in the first couple months after baby’s birth, during the time of sleep deprivation and the transition into parenthood. Fact: Postpartum mood and anxiety disorders can look very different from typical depression and can appear anytime during the first two years after childbirth. PMAD’s can appear as anxiety, sleeplessness, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. Approximately 85% of women get the baby blues a few days after birth which can look like sadness and overwhelm. The baby blues are a natural hormonal balancing act after birth while the mother's body is trying to regulate itself and will go away after two to three weeks. If symptoms persist or worsen see your doctor. Myth: Picking up your baby every time she cries will create bad habits. Fact: During the first months of life it is necessary for you to respond to your baby's cues and to comfort them when they cry. Picking up your baby teaches them that they are safe and creates a more secure toddler and adult.

Myth: Never wake a sleeping baby. Fact: In the first few weeks your breastfed newborn needs to eat every two to three hours. If they are sleeping any longer than that and not waking up on their own, you will need to gently nudge them awake for a feeding. Breastmilk is digested very fast and creates energy for the baby to wake up and eat. If baby does not get enough calories they will not have the energy to wake themselves up to eat. Myth: It is normal to experience pain or incontinence in your pelvic floor after childbirth. Fact: Some women experience pelvic floor pain for months or years after childbirth, these symptoms are often caused by tight, weak or separated pelvic muscles. A physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor rehab can identify any muscles and help to strengthen or release them. Myth: Short naps for a new mother are beneficial during postpartum recovery. Fact: A nap is most beneficial when one gets the full sleep cycle which is 90 minutes and includes both light and deep stages of sleep. Baby Keiki EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

38 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Educational Activities for Toddlers If you’re looking for educational activity ideas for your toddler, look no further. Here are some fun, device-free games that will engage your toddler and even prepare him or her for preschool or kindergarten. Post-It Number Hunt Game Clearly write some numbers on post-its, and distribute them around the house or backyard. Ask your toddler to find them in order. Once he or she has mastered that, move on to random number recognition. Balloon & Dice Game In a clear and open space, roll a die. Whichever number is face up is the number of times your child has to keep a balloon up in the air and off the floor. Color Wheel Hunt Take a selection of different colored paper or card stock. If you’re out of colored paper, take white paper and color it in. Arrange the paper or card stock in a circle on the floor. Ask your toddler to go around the house to collect items matching that color, and then place the items on the corresponding colored paper.

Egg Carton Color Sorting Game Recycle cardboard egg cartons by cutting out or breaking apart each section. Paint each one a different color and, after they’ve dried, ask your toddler to stack them by color. Alphabet Bingo Good old-fashioned Bingo never fails to please toddlers. Making the cards is an activity itself. For toddlers already familiar with the alphabet, challenge them by throwing in upper and lower case letters. Post-It Alphabet Hunt Game This game is set up just like the post-it number hunt game above, except with letters. This game could also involve colors and upper and lower case letters. Magazine Shape Hunt Go on a shape discovery hunt with your child. Take a magazine and identify the shapes on a page. Too easy? Use a timer and ask your toddler to find five circles (or squares or triangles) before the timer goes off. Saltbox Discovery Game Draw shapes on a piece of paper and cut them out. Put the cut-out shapes in a container and cover them with salt so that the shapes are completely hidden. Ask your toddler to find the shapes by pushing the salt aside. Engaging your child in fun, educational activities is easy, and requires only simple materials. Your child will be entertained and more prepared for school life without even knowing it!

Ohana NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

Many people make personal new year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year. But have you ever considered making resolutions with your family? Creating a common goal with family members can be a fun and loving way to connect and spend time together. To kick off the new year, here are some ideas. Show compassion. If your family members tend to argue or be confrontational with one another, consider making a collective intention to be more understanding and less judgmental of each other. If there are certain triggers that set off arguments, discuss ahead of time ways to gracefully navigate those issues. Exercise together. Find an activity that all members can do together and at their own pace. Biking on a designated bike path, for example, can be a fun way to keep fit and be outdoors as a family.

4th Annual Project Gift SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8TH // 9AM–3PM 2375 MAIN ST. A, WAILUKU

Keep the house tidy as a family. Turn on the music, let your 12-year-old daughter choose the songs, and do a 30-minute cleanup every week. This is a great way to get an essential job done with no fuss and a lot of fun. Mom and dad will be happy, and deep down the kids will be happy too. A clean house makes for an organized, more harmonious family. Eat healthy foods. Sit down as a family and make a list of all the healthy foods you know you need to incorporate into your diet. Next, look up recipes that include those ingredients. If only one parent has the time to cook, and dinner can’t always be together, eating the healthy dish at least ensures the resolution was met! Read together. Curling up on the sofa with your kids and diving into a good book can be a wonderful way to connect and relax at the same time. If there are signs of reluctance within your family to do this, throw in some funny stories, tell the story in a funny voice, and act out the story for the young ones. Making resolutions as a family can shine a new light on resolution making. Whether it’s a family bike ride or a delicious healthy dinner, take advantage of the opportunity to do something positive together – in a fun, family-style way. PROJECT GIFT will be kicking off its 4th Annual Project Gift Christmas toy drive and fun fair on Saturday, December 8th at the Hale Ho’ike’ike grounds (formerly known as Bailey House Museum) in Wailuku. This year’s free family event promises to be another fun-filled day with local craft vendors, ono food, live music, a silent auction, country store, and of course our popular Keiki Snow Zone with a 225-square-foot Snow Pit, face painting, balloon artists and make-and-take crafts. Project Gift was birthed out of a desire to get Christmas gifts into the hands of less fortunate keiki on Maui. With the support of local residents and businesses, over 1,600 children have received gifts to date. While one person can make a difference, a community of people can change an island. We invite you to come and be a part of this change. Toys and monetary donations will be received at the event. For more information please contact Aubrey Anana at 808.870.2606; or visit www.projectgiftmaui.com; facebook.com/projectgiftmaui.

Ohana SUPERFOODS

Powerhouse Veggies & Other Foods to Keep Your Family Healthy

I

f it’s time to stir up your family’s diet and include healthy, power-packed superfoods, here are a few suggestions. Stubborn family? Don’t worry. Incorporating even a few of these foods is a step in the right direction. The leafy tops on a beetroot are full of vitamin K, which is linked to lowering your chance of getting type 2 diabetes. One cup of these raw greens provides close to twice your daily requirement. Sauté a bunch of beet greens with some olive oil and garlic for a healthy side dish. Or chop them and add to frittatas, soups or pasta dishes. Baby radish, cabbage, kale and broccoli can be higher in nutrients like vitamins C and E, than the regular mature plants. Add a handful of these microgreens to sandwiches and salads, or use as a garnish for soups. Wild salmon is packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids that help lower cholesterol, prevent heart disease and reduce stress. Salmon also contains vitamin B6, niacin and riboflavin, which help convert the food you consume into energy.

Blueberries are ranked number one in antioxidant levels by the United States Department of Agriculture. They contain 15 types of antioxidants, vitamins A and C, potassium, iron, folate and manganese. They are believed to help lower cholesterol, improve memory and eyesight, slow signs of aging, and reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Oranges contain vitamin C, potassium and folate, which help steadily release energy instead of delivering a sugar rush. Their membranes are full of pectin, a soluble dietary fiber that may reduce blood cholesterol levels. Vitamin C helps reduce stress hormone levels. Nuts are heart-healthy because of their high unsaturated fat content. Almonds are good for preventing osteoporosis. Walnuts may help lower the risk of arthritis and psoriasis by reducing C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, in the body. And, studies say pistachios may help boost your antioxidant levels. Powerhouse foods are the way to go for a healthy, energy-boosting diet. Introduce as many as you can to your family’s diet and rest assured you’re doing everyone a big favor! This holiday season Maui audiences are in for a sweet treat when Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) presents Nutcracker Sweets, a delightful, family-friendly adaptation of the treasured holiday classic featuring 140 MAPA dancers and alumni.

MAPA Presents a Sweet Holiday Treat: Nutcracker Sweets SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8TH SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9TH

Whether you are introducing a child to the magic of this story for the first time or honoring an annual tradition of seeing the beloved ballet for the umpteenth time, Nutcracker Sweets is a must-see event this holiday season. With stunning costumes and beautiful choreography set to the timeless Tchaikovsky score, this production will dazzle audiences of all ages. Visit mauiacademy.org for more information.

Ohana CREATIVITY

The Power of Intention "The power of intention is the power to manifest, to create, to live a life of unlimited abundance, and to attract into your life the right people at the right moments." -Wayne Dyer

Intention is a creative power that fulfills our needs, whatever they may be. Everything in life begins with intention. If you’re interested in making your intention your reality, here are a few ideas. Be your own master. Realize on a deep level that you are a master at living a life filled with intention. Believing in your own abilities to manifest all that you want in life gives you a foundation of deep trust. Decide to listen to your insights. Insights can come in many forms, including dreams, visions and a sense of ‘knowing.’ Big or small, take them seriously! They offer information that can lead you in the right direction. Clear resistance. Allow yourself to see, sense or know what is blocking your path to leading the life you want. Don’t be judgmental about it; just see what is causing resistance and make peace with it. Release energy that is holding you back.

St. Joseph Christmas Craft Fair SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH // 7AM–2PM 1294 MAKAWAO AVE., MAKAWAO

Act on your intuition. Taking action puts your whole being in alignment with what you are looking to achieve. The power of intention is not about wishing and hoping; it’s about being an active creator. Remain humble while staying in a state of gratitude. Being thankful and having humility go a long way. Look for opportunities every day to give a heartfelt thanks to the miracles of life. Mastering the power of intention can be lifechanging. It allows us to define what we want, clear the paths of resistance, listen to and act on our inner knowing, and remain grateful. We can then reap the benefits of living a life full of happiness and purpose.

St. Joseph Early Learning Center invites you to their annual Craft Fair; a holiday showcase to shop for unique and creative items from many local crafters for all occasions. Come and enjoy the holiday spirit that will include a special guest “Santa” who will be landing his sled at 11 a.m. for the children and children at heart. The event will also feature an array of ono foods, live entertainment, baked good items, and so much more will be available. Start the holiday season early this year. Join in the celebration on Saturday, November 17th from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 1294 Makawao Ave. (school grounds). See you there! If you are a crafter and wish to participate, contact Donna at 808-572-7652.

Breakfast with Santa at Sacred Hearts School SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8TH // 8:30AM–10:30AM 239 DICKENSON ST., LAHAINA

Breakfast with Santa, hosted by Sacred Hearts School, is not to be missed! It is always fun to have a holiday event to take the children to and this one covers all bases. Beginning with a scrumptious breakfast, there are two options: pancakes, eggs, Portuguese sausage and fruit for $10.00 or a pancake and fruit only choice for $7.00. While enjoying caroling by the Honors Choir, take a complimentary photograph with Santa. Don’t forget to visit the craft station and book fair as well! Following the breakfast will be performances by Aunty Char’s Halau and the Body in Balance Dance Ensemble. Breakfast with Santa will be held on Saturday, December 8th from 8:30 am to 10:30 am on the Sacred Hearts School campus. Proceeds from this event help fund the middle school East Coast Learning Journey. Purchase tickets in the school office or visit our website at shs.maui.org/giving.

National Children's Grief Awareness Day THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH // NATIONWIDE In Maui County, approximately 1900 children have had a parent or sibling die. By age 18, 1 in 5 children in the U.S. will have had someone close to them die. These numbers should alert us to the issue of unaddressed grief, which can cause depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, alcohol and substance abuse, truancy, and relationship problems as the child matures and moves into adulthood. November 15, 2018 is National Children’s Grief Awareness Day, a day to think about the children and teens you know who might be living with unprocessed grief. Awareness is increasing, and programs such as Nā Keiki O Emalia are springing up across the U.S. and around the world.

Nā Keiki O Emalia runs ongoing peer support bereavement groups for keiki, teens and their adults at no cost to participants. The NKOE website has videos about the importance of helping grieving keiki. For information, visit www.nkoemaui.org, call Dr. Brooke Brown at 808.214.9832, or email contact@nkoemaui.org.

Ohana BALANCE

Stress-Free Holidays While the holidays can be a time for fun family get-togethers, for many they can also be a source of stress and anxiety. If you tend to dread the holidays, consider ways to transform that stress into pure joy and laughter. Don't take on too much. Who said you have to do it all? Be kind to yourself from the beginning by ensuring you don’t take on too much cooking, hosting, shopping or whatever it is that makes you feel overwhelmed. Be honest with friends and family members, and ask them to share the load. Take time out for yourself. Resting or taking care of yourself works in your favor. If you typically feel guilty about taking care of yourself, take frequent short breaks from the holiday season. Take a hot bath, walk in nature, or watch a movie. Sometimes a little break is all you need to feel energized and revitalized. Order take-out. Ask a family member to bring home some take-out dishes. It takes the burden off your shoulders to come up with dinner ideas, do the shopping, and do the dishes! Affordable options are salad bars or deli sections in your favorite local supermarket. Ask for help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign that you are human! Swallow your pride, call a friend or family

member, and ask for what you need. You may be surprised by the response – most people are willing to help, especially during the holidays. Plan ahead of time. Get together with your family and co-create a plan for upcoming social events or meals. Planning ahead of time helps prevent misunderstandings and disappointments. Do your shopping online. If shopping at the mall is a stress trigger, try your hand at online shopping instead. There’s no traffic and no lines, and the choices for gift ideas are unlimited – what’s not to like? Find websites with free shipping and flexible return policies to make this shopping experience a real winner. The holidays don’t have to be stressful and overwhelming. Take steps to ensure you’re having a fun, relaxing time by following some of these suggestions. After all, the holidays are for you too.

Carden Academy Holiday Book Fair FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7TH // 10AM–4PM 55 MAKA'ENA PLACE, PUKALANI Join Carden Academy for their one day Scholastic Holiday Book Fair, open to the public. A great place to do your holiday shopping for books, gifts, and more. Choose from hundreds of titles, authors, and genres for every level and interest. Proceeds benefit Carden Academy of Maui which is located off Kula Highway, across from King Kekaulike High School.

The educational nature of MHOK is designed with the focus on student learning, not on teachers teaching. The key philosophy is reflected in the phrase, "follow the child." This phrase sums up our instructional/learning environment where the child is presented with activity choices and progresses at his/her own rate of cognitive/neurological and emotional development.
