DIY Pineapple Pinecone Ornaments Add a tropical touch to your Christmas tree with these pineapple pinecone ornaments! Supplies Pinecones, yellow acrylic paint, string, green construction paper, hot-glue gun, scissors, and a paintbrush. Instructions First, paint the pinecone yellow using a small paintbrush. While the paint dries, cut pineapple leaves out of the green construction paper. Then hot-glue the leaves on top of the pinecone. Tip: If your pinecone is not open at the top, you can cut the paper to make a crown, curl down the edges, roll the crown up, cut the bottom to fit the pineapple and glue the crown to the pineapple. Tie or glue the string to the top of the pinecone and hang it on your tree.
No-Cook Cinnamon Ornament Clay Fill your home with the wintry scent of cinnamon and make cute ornaments, too! Supplies 1 C flour, ½ C salt, ½ C cinnamon, ¾ C warm water Other Materials Cookie cutters, wax paper, and acrylic paints (optional). Instructions Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix. Next, remove the dough and knead it. Knead for a few minutes, then let the kids roll out the dough on wax paper and use cookie cutters to make the ornaments. Use a straw to make a hole at the top of the ornaments, so they are easy to hang up. It takes approximately 24-hours for the clay to dry, then it can be painted with acrylic paint if desired.
Paper Chain Advent Countdown This craft is great for kids to get creative and have a way to countdown to Christmas. Supplies Scissors, construction paper, glue, ribbon, pom pom, other embellishments, pencil, ruler, and a stapler. Instructions Help your child draw even lines across the construction paper to create strips of paper. Use the ruler as a guideline and draw the lines with the pen. You should fit about 8 strips per page. Use the scissors to cut out about 25 strips per child. Staple each strip into a ring. Let the children decorate the rings using the pom poms, embellishments, and glue. Hang up the paper chain advent countdown and each day have the children cut off one strip until Christmas Day. JP

Our Keiki SELF-CALMING
How to Stay Calm When Your Child Throws a Tantrum BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
Y
our heart beats faster, your breathing increases, and your mind is racing as you observe your child’s behavior escalate towards a tantrum. How do you keep calm? The ability to self-calm is among the greatest life skills your child will learn. She will use it to cope with changes, to manage friendships, schoolwork, and other stressors into adolescence and beyond. You want to harness the opportunity to build your child’s self-calming skills, and having strategies to do so will help you keep calm too! • Make sure you are attending to your own self-care so that you are able to keep calm. • Have designated “time in” with your child throughout the week; this will prevent him from tantrumming to get your attention. • Have a daily “check-in” and each talk about one thing that went well and one thing that was tricky; this builds verbal skills to replace tantrums. • Have an identified “cozy space” at home that your child has designed with blankets, pillows, and other soothing items. Talk together about how this is a good space to have a “break” when he needs space to calm his body down.
• When your child is becoming elevated, breathe deeply and slowly to keep yourself calm. • Move your body at a slower speed. • Speak calmly and quietly. • Don’t try to problems solve; your child cannot “hear” you when she is in an elevated state. • Use a tone that lets your child know you understand how upset he is, and his feelings are important. • Know there is no short-cut; you want to support your child to move through her big feelings (see ‘Train Analogy’ Article below). • Keep your child’s body and your body safe. • If you are in a public place, as you move your child to a quiet spot, narrate aloud to give those around you context for his behavior. For example, “Oh, you’ve had such a big day, and this is too much; we are almost done, and then it's time to go home.” • Later, when your child is calm, talk about the “tricky” event. Ask about what helped her body to calm and what didn’t. Help your child tweak her self-calming plan. "Use The ‘Train Analogy’ To Help You Deal With Your Kid’s Tantrums," (scarymommy.com). Our Keiki GIVING BACK
Kindness with Kahiau Rocks
K
ahiau, “giving from the heart without any expectation of return,” lies at the heart of Maui’s unique new activity involving Kahiau Rocks. It’s a little like a treasure hunt and payit-forward combined: find a painted rock, do something kind, and then re-hide it. Liane Nakamura and her kids, Kylan and Maika Lei, spend quality time together painting the rocks (purchased from a store-no local rocks are harmed), as well as beachcombing and diving for empty shells that accompany the hidden rocks. Each original rock hidden by the Nakamuras is coupled with a shell. The rocks and shells are hidden in places where Liane and the kids think people are in need of feeling something positive. Once found, the lucky recipient will hopefully initiate an act of kindness before hiding the painted rock again. Of course, the shells are keepers, but the rocks go on to motivate the next treasure seeker to keep the good vibes rolling. To be a part of the fun: 1. Find a Kahiau Rock. 2. Do a random act of kindness.
3. Take a photo and tag @kahiau.rocks on Instagram or Facebook. 4. Hide the rock in a new location! Blue Zones held an event at the Queen Kaahumanu Center in September, where participants painted over 100 rocks for the Kahiau Rock project. There will be a lot more rocks to find throughout the year! Join Kahiau Rocks for free rock painting at Friends and Faire on Thursday, November 14, 2019, from 6:30–8:00pm. See IG or FB for more details. Once a month the kids select a winner, prizes are donated by @kahiau.rocks and small local businesses. Anyone who finds a rock is encouraged to share their excitement, and experience of giving, on the Kahiau Rocks Instagram or Facebook account.
To learn more visit @kahiau.rocks on Instagram or join the Facebook Group "Kahiau.rocks".

Our Keiki GET OUTDOORS
Give a Gift to Your Child & the Planet BY ALICIA WOOD PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION
S
pending time outdoors is an important part of healthy development for a child. Unfortunately, the general trend has been for children to spend more and more time indoors, preferring television, youtube, video games or one of the hundred other indoor entertainment options. Over the past few decades, many studies have been conducted on the impacts of time outdoors on both adults and children. Overall, findings show a benefit to health – both physical and mental – as a result of time spent outdoors: physically active or not. For children, time outdoors has been shown to increase concentration abilities and lessen attention deficit symptoms, decrease stress and anxiety, helps elevate mood, helps with emotion, and even vision. Not only is outdoor time good for keiki but it’s good for the future of the planet as well! Our global climate is changing at an unsustainable rate, which has the potential to alter the delicate balance of Earth’s ecosystems. Action can be taken to slow or reverse this change, but it is only through care for the environment that action will be inspired. Any outdoor time is time well spent but it is also important for children to experience the environment with someone who has knowledge of nature and how to properly interact with it; here are just a few suggestions of how you can help your keiki experience the outdoors in a productive way that will help inspire them to be environmental stewards.
• Take a guided nature walk, often offered at National and State Parks. • On your next beach visit, see what coastal creatures you can identify together. • Sign up for outdoor volunteer opportunities, like a guided trip by Pacific Whale Foundation to Haleakalā to pull invasive weeds (pacificwhale.org/volunteer-vacation/) or plant native vegetation with Auwahi Forest Restoration (auwahi.org). • Send your keiki to outdoor/nature focused camps during school breaks. • Refresh yourself on cloud formations and incorporate Hawaiian names for various clouds, wind, and rain into your daily commute with your child.
Alicia Wood joined Pacific Whale Foundation in 2018 as communications coordinator, after graduating from the University of Hawaii Maui College with a degree in Sustainable Science Management.

Baby Keiki
Whether you live on Maui or are visiting for the first time, you will find that the island offers a variety of activities for toddlers to enjoy.
Library Story Time
The Maui Public Libraries offer engaging story times for toddlers each week. Check online for their schedule, as they often host special events, as well. Specific schedules are available at https://www.librarieshawaii.org. Story time is an excellent opportunity to connect with other families in the community, hear toddler stories read by librarians, learn fun toddler songs, and often include a craft time.
Breakfast Picnics at the Beach
Before the wind picks up and the crowds arrive, you can enjoy a breakfast picnic with your toddler at the beach. He will get his energy out and soak in the fun while avoiding the midday sun, as well. Some good foods to pack for a morning at the beach are fresh fruits, individually packaged yogurt, bagels, nuts, dried fruit, boiled eggs, and breakfast sandwiches.
Visit ‘Iao Valley
The cultural gardens at ‘Iao Valley provide a beautiful backdrop for your toddler to explore. Some areas are under construction, so always use caution and stay close to your child when exploring the gardens. This location provides a wonderful learning opportunity, as you can share with your toddler about the many cultures that are represented in the gardens and how they made their way to Maui. You may also hike up to ‘Iao Needle, as there are guardrails and a paved staircase that lead you to it, making it easier for children. The views are breathtaking from ‘Iao Valley, and your toddler is sure to enjoy this mini-adventure.
Hike Makawao Forest Reserve
There are several marked trails at the Makawao Forest Reserve that offer a simple hike for you and your toddler to enjoy. A portion of the trail is for mountain bikes, which may be fun as well!
From the mountains to the sea, Maui offers a variety of activities for you and your toddler to do. JP

Baby Keiki BABY FOOD
When to Start Baby Food BY DR. IRENE PAPACONSTADOPOULOS
A
t what age to start baby food and which foods to give may be confusing. You may have heard different answers from providers or other parents. • The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continuing breastfeeding while introducing solids until your child is 12 months old or older. • Breastfed babies need daily 400 IU oral supplementation of vitamin D. • Off-limits for the whole first year: honey, fresh cow’s milk, and raw foods. • Starting solids before 4 months is associated with increased odds of obesity at 3 years of age. • Starting solids later than 6 months may lead to allergies and low iron and zinc intake. • Start your baby on solids when she shows signs of readiness, and she is at least 4 months of age. If breastfed, aim for starting solids at 6 months. • Signs that your child is developmentally ready: - Can sit with little support, has good head control, opens his or her mouth, and leans forward when food is offered. All foods should be liquid-like pureed. - Never force-feeding. • There is no single perfect first food. We used to recommend rice cereal. With new information out about arsenic in rice cereal, it is now recommended that we only feed this once weekly to babies. Start with pureed
vegetables and fruit as a first baby food and then cereals and pureed meats. Introduce one new food every couple of days. • There is currently strong evidence that early introduction of peanuts prevents peanut allergy in infants. Based on the new guidelines, delaying the introduction of allergenic foods (eg, soy, wheat, fish, tree nut butters, peanut butter) is no longer recommended. • Infants who are not high risk for allergies should start allergenic foods in pureed form, at 6 months of age. Infants with severe eczema and/or egg allergy may need prior in-office testing. Always consult first with your Pediatrician.
Dr. Irene Papaconstadopoulos is a Board Certified Pediatrician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, currently working with Dr. Frank Baum, in Kahului.

Setting Intentions for the New Year as a Family To ring in the New Year with a true sense of rebirth and renewal, try setting intentions as a family. It’s a great way to stay close to your children and teens while clearing the path for some fresh energy for the entire family. To help you on your way, here are a few ideas for setting intentions. Create a vision or dream board. Treat your creative side by making a family vision board from old magazines. Each person can have a corner of the board, or the family can choose a theme and you all work together. Allow kids to use other materials such as glitter glue and crayons as a form of self-expression, too.
Set realistic goals and celebrate success. Discuss what goals are attainable and celebrate each along the way. If your goal is to keep the house cleaner, let each family member chose a task they’re most interested in doing. When the house is clean, why not celebrate with ice creams or cake - outside!
Work together. When you hold each person accountable for their part in the pact, the true work of cooperation comes into play. If family members
become slack or refuse to participate, call them on it. Better yet, call a family meeting and reassess. By working together, you’ll be more successful and there’ll be more motivation.
Make goals that have a timeline. Set a specific deadline for the goal. Perhaps a six-month or one-month window works better for your family. This opens the door to achieving many smaller goals rather than one larger year-long goal.
Setting New Year's intentions as a family can be a fun, engaging activity. It’s an opportunity to bring you all together and move forward as a family unit. RG

Ohana FUN
Indoor Family Fun: Activities for a Rainy Day When the weather is not cooperating with outdoor activities, help keep your children (and yourself) from going stir-crazy with some of these indoor family activities. Camp in the Living Room - Turn part of your home into an indoor campsite for some family fun! Set up a tent (without stakes) and add sleeping bags or blankets, pillows, and sheets to make it cozy. If you don’t have a tent, create one out of blankets and sheets and attach to a table or chairs. Add twinkle lights to give a starry night effect. Let the children build a pretend fire out of blocks or sticks, then add flameless candles or flashlights to create the pretend fire. After setting up “camp,” the sky’s the limit: do sing-alongs, read books, eat S’mores and of course, sleep in the tent. Board Games and Card Games - Games are a great way to connect with your family and learn how to win or lose graciously. A few your family may enjoy are Go Fish, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Monopoly, Candyland, Jenga, and Old Maid. Have an Indoor Picnic - Spread a large blanket on the floor and enjoy an indoor picnic, sans the bugs, with your kids.
Indoor Scavenger Hunt - Create your own clues that take your kids around the house to various locations, each clue leading to the next clue. When you find your last clue, include a favorite treat or goodie bag to celebrate finding all of the spots. Throw a Family Dance Party - Put on your favorite playlist and jam out together, burning energy and having a blast while you are stuck inside the house. Movie Marathon - Pick a favorite movie series and snuggle up for some popcorn and relaxation on a rainy day. Make Crafts - Pull out the craft supplies and enjoy an afternoon of creating works of art together. Play Hide and Seek - This classic indoor game is a hit with most kids. JP

Ohana POSITIVE OUTLOOK
How to Think Like an Optimist
H
ave you ever spent time with an optimistic person and felt envious of their positive outlook on life? If the answer is yes and you’d like to change your mindset, but don’t know how, read on for some tips. Awareness. Being aware of negative thought patterns or self-deprecating tendencies is key to being on a path to change. In a quiet moment, check yourself for the way you think and how you process life. Stop the negative chatter. Once you’ve decided you could benefit from some positive energy, ignoring the negative chatter in your head is essential. When you find yourself slipping back into a negative mindset, stop yourself in the moment. You might be surprised how often you have to put the brakes on. Be honest and, most of all, be firm!
"Holidays in Paradise!" at Maui Mall MONTH OF DECEMBER MAUI MALL, 70 E. KAAHUMANU AVE, KAHULUI
Replace. Now that you’ve cleared your head, here comes the fun part. Replace the negative with the positive, e.g., instead of saying, “I can’t this do,” try saying, “I’m open to trying this,” or “How can I look at this in a different way?” Remember. Make a list of all the blessings in your life and see how each makes a positive impact. Recalling what makes your life pleasurable can help illuminate and expand a feeling of joy. Place your attention on all that you are grateful for and savor that feeling of appreciation and love. Do what brings you joy. Find an activity that helps you reconnect with what makes you happy. Listen to music, go for a hike, catch a comedy at the movies. Make the time to do something fun or relaxing and don’t feel guilty about it. Having awareness, choosing to be optimistic, and doing what brings you joy can take you from feeling negative to optimistic in minutes. All it takes is your decision to do it! RG Maui Mall invites you and your family out to celebrate the inaugural “Holidays in Paradise!” in the newly renovated Kahului shopping complex. Unwind before the busy holiday season every Thursday in November at their Thankfulness Wind Down events featuring Keoni’s Hot Lava Dancefit, Pure Barre, and Soulasana Yoga. Who can resist Black Friday deals at the Maui Mall? Over 30 merchants are here to provide special gifts for your entire ‘ohana! Ohana ADVENTURE
Stargazing with Your 'Ohana Maui is an ideal place for stargazing with a loved one, family, or friends. The lack of light pollution ensures that many spots on the Valley Isle offer amazing opportunities for seeing stars and planets. To get the most out of your breathtaking adventure, grab a chair or blanket, and read on. Stargazing will be better the darker the night is, so try to choose a moonless night. The days before, during, or right after each new moon usually offer the best stargazing. During a full moon, the stars may still be visible but will appear much dimmer. Don’t forget to look out for a meteor shower, such as the Geminid Meteor Shower in December. Head out of town away from light pollution for the best stargazing. Higher ground will take you up and above most of the brightly lit areas. At 10,000 feet, Haleakala offers the best view of the stars on the island. Book a tour with an astronomer to enhance the celestial experience or drive up with your partner. Don’t forget to bring warm clothes. It’s easy to underestimate how cold it gets up there! The hotels offer some amazing views from their rooftops. Hyatt Regency hotel in Ka’anapali has its own “Tour of the Stars” from atop their ninestory roof. Look through their telescopes and

marvel at Maui’s clear skies. Tours are at 8pm and 9pm nightly. At 10pm there’s a romantic adult-only tour complete sparkling wine and strawberries. Reservations are required. Why not admire the beauty of Maui’s skies over the Pacific Ocean on a sunset sail? Evening boat tours go out in time to watch the sun go down and as the stars beginning to appear. The Pacific Whale Foundation has a special celestial cruise with their very own astronomer an onboard. Stargazing from a boat on the ocean can be a magical experience for the entire family. Take advantage of Maui for all that its clear night skies have to offer! On the right night, you could experience a view of the stars and planets that’s only possible right here. Maybe that’s why people say, “Maui nō ka ‘oi!” RG The Upcountry dance studio will hold its annual community performance, Holiday of Dance, at the AAPA studios located at 870 Hali‘imaile Road. Dancers of all ages will perform classical variations from the Nutcracker ballet along with festive contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and tap dance pieces. Original choreography is by Amelia couture, Absalon Figueroa, Hallie Hunt, Lee Anne Lawrence, Yasmine Lindskog and Danelle Watson. This hour show is a wonderful opportunity for fans to enjoy a holiday community performance, current students to share what they have learned, and for prospective students to see the variety of classes on offer. Tickets are $10 adult $5 Keiki $7 for multiple show discounts; lap children under 2 are free. Concessions will be sold as a fundraiser for our spring production of Sleeping Beauty. www.alexanderacademy.info • 808-878-8970

Ohana GIVING & RECEIVING
How to Give & Receive a Good Apology
G
iving a good apology is harder than it sounds. For some, accepting or receiving is just as tricky. The good news is apologies don’t have to be challenging on either account. It’s all about the way you do it. Consider some of the following suggestions and see if apologizing becomes a natural act. Tone of Voice. Use a soft tone of voice when you take responsibility for your actions. If you’re still feeling the heat of the moment, chose another time to make your apology. The way you sound speaks volumes. Eye Contact. Make sure you are looking directly in your partner’s eyes when saying you are sorry. If your eyes are not on them, it sends a message that you are not, in fact, sorry. Worse than that, if you’re not making eye contact, they may think you don’t even care.
No “buts." The worse thing to do is say, “I’m sorry, but…” The idea of apologizing is that you are taking full responsibility for your actions, words, or decision to act in a certain way. A “but” sounds like you think the other person or situation was the cause or partial cause of your action. Be ready. Make sure you are in the right mindset to hear an apology. If emotions are still high, take time out and hit the reset button. Come back and see the other person for who they are and what they are trying to achieve. Be open. In order to receive an apology, you need to be a good listener. Don’t interrupt, offer advice, or make a comment. Try listening fully without judgment to each word the speaker is offering. Stay in a place of openness and love in order to hear what the other person is saying. Don’t forget to acknowledge the effort put out by the person by thanking them. Apologizing can make or break how your friendship continues with another person. It is a show of responsibility and love. Use this tool well, and you could be the warm, open-minded person you were always meant to be. RG It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Makawao. St. Joseph Parish and Early Learning Center invites you to a pre-season shopping extravaganza. Local vendors and crafters will have amazing items available for the giftgiving season. As an extra treat, Santa will be landing his sled for a visit at eleven o’clock for the children and children at heart.

Breast Cancer: Early Detection is Key
M
aui Medical Group Women’s Health Team is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate care to the women of Maui. Among their latest offerings is the opportunity to detect breast cancers earlier thanks to the life-changing technology of the Selenia Dimensions system's Genius™ 3D Mammography™. “It’s simply a better, clinically superior mammogram,” said Dr. Lana Wilkinson, Radiologist at Maui Medical Group. “This state-of-the-art technology, the first of its kind on Maui, enables
us to detect breast cancers earlier, see lesions more clearly, and helps reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.” Early detection is key when it comes to breast cancer, a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast and affects one in every eight women in the U.S. If breast cancer is found early, there are more treatment options and a better chance for survival. In fact, women whose breast cancer is detected at an early stage have a 93 percent or higher survival rate in the first five years. To learn more or to make a mammogram appointment, contact Maui Medical Group at (808) 249-8080 or visit www.MauiMedical.com.
Na Keiki O Emalia: Supporting Grieving Children on Maui Nā Keiki O Emalia is a nonprofit organization based on Maui which offers support groups run by trained facilitators in the schools for children who have experienced a death in the family. While these groups are not therapy, they are therapeutic for keiki and families. Unaddressed grief in childhood can cause depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, alcohol and substance abuse, truancy, and relationship problems as the child matures, negatively affecting them in adulthood. Currently, NKOE runs several support groups in the schools and a specific late afternoon group for young keiki, also an evening group for middle schoolers and teens. In some groups, children or teens meet in one room, while their adults meet in another room.
NKOE is a member of The National Alliance for Grieving Children and will mark Children's Grief Awareness Day on Thursday, November 21st by hosting a workshop for educators on how student grief manifests in the classroom and will offer training for peer-to-peer group facilitators. For information, visit www.nkoemaui.org, email NKOE Executive Director Dr. Brooke Brown at contact@nkoemaui.org or call 808214-9832.
