Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips Homemade Gifts for the Holidays
Free, family-friendly fun on the first Saturday of each month!
As the holiday season approaches, the stress of finding the “perfect gift” for your loved ones may begin to seep into your life. Instead of fighting the crowds at the mall, why not make gifts instead? Here are some ideas: Homemade Men’s Shaving Cream Supplies: 1/2 c Coconut Oil, 1/2 c Shea Butter, 1/4 c Almond Oil, 2 tsp. Vitamin E Oil, 1-1/2 Tbsp. Baking Soda, 10–15 drops Essential Oil of your choice. Recommended scents include sandalwood, peppermint, and rosemary or eucalyptus. Directions: Melt shea butter and coconut oil in a pot. Stir in almond oil, viatmin E oil and essential oils. Place in refrigerator until mixture is almost solid. Remove from refrigerator, add baking soda, and then use a mixer to whip until light and fluffy. Store in a small airtight container. Lavender Sachets Supplies: Fabric, Coordinating Thread, Sewing Needle, Dried Lavender Flowers. Directions: Cut a 12” by 6” rectangle of fabric. Fold the fabric in half, inside-out, and secure with pins. Sew a seam around the open ends, leaving about 2” open on one side. Turn right-side-out. Make a funnel out of cardstock and use that to fill your sachet with the dried lavender flowers until almost full. Fold open seams inward, and machine or hand sew shut.
Hot Chocolate Spoons Supplies: Disposable Wooden Spoons, Wax Paper, Miniature Marshmallows, Peanut Butter, White Chocolate, Semi-Sweet Chocolate, Coconut Flakes, Crushed Candy Canes. Directions: Melt the semi-sweet chocolate, white chocolate and peanut butter separately. Stir it quickly. Dip a wooden spoon in one of the melted chocolates or peanut butter, and lay it on wax paper. Before it hardens, top with ingredients of your choice. Optional flavors include chocolate drizzled with peanut butter, white chocolate with crushed candy canes, chocolate with marshmallows, etc. Allow them to harden completely on wax paper. Then wrap the hot chocolate spoons in treat bags, and secure with a ribbon. JP

The Best Educational Apps for Kids
F
ace it: portable internet devices are here to stay, and our kids are fond of them. Screen time for kids becomes more palatable when we know they’re learning something at the same time. But sorting through the thousands of learning apps out there to find the ones that work, can be a trick. That’s why we’re sharing a few recommendations for both Android and Apple devices. Math Apps Motion Math (ages 1-11): Offers over a dozen apps, each focused on a different age group (Hungry Guppy for ages 5 and under) or a different skill (Fractions!). Kids simulate experiences from feeding fish to running a bakery, all while learning math concepts, which makes the apps both engaging and educational. Motion Math apps can be bought separately or as a bundle. Language Arts Writing Wizard (ages 5 and under): Help your child learn handwriting with Writing Wizard. Kids trace letters, and hear letter names and phonetic pro-
TS
nunciations. Parents can add their own words and choose from 5 fonts, customizing the letter size to suit their child’s progress. Includes printable worksheets and shape tracing for toddlers. Rory’s Story Cubes or Story Dice (ages 3+): These inexpensive storytelling apps use dice with images in place of numbers. Roll one, two or more cubes to establish story parameters. They can be used for oral stories with preschoolers, writing games for grade schoolers, or even creative writing prompts with high schoolers. A fun, flexible, virtual version of the popular dice sets. Science and Social Science Britannica Kids (ages 8+): While the Encyclopaedia Britannica’s apps are pricier (usually $4.99), they offer a wealth of articles and videos on a variety of topics. Kids can learn about the solar system, ancient Rome, volcanoes, presidents and more, depending on which app you choose. Other Duolingo (all ages): This free app uses graphics and easy-to-repeat audio to teach basic language skills for 10 different languages. Skills are reinforced through repetition, and players don’t move on to the next module until they have successfully learned the previous, earning points to cash in at a virtual store. LK

Our Keiki EDUCATION
Encouraging Self-Learning for Academic Success
O
ne skill essential to children’s academic success is the ability to learn on their own. While teachers and parents play a key role in a child’s development, educational activities that encourage self-learning are equally important. Learning independently inspires children to become more confident, and nurtures critical thinking and analytical skills. Giving children time to learn on their own allows them to tap in to their natural curiosity and to explore in a way that more structured learning activities do not. At its core, self-learning gives students the power to explore new concepts on their own, at their own pace. In a traditional classroom setting, activities move along at a pace that usually caters to the class as a whole, rather than to each individual student. Self-learning exercises
allow students to think critically and move on to more difficult exercises at their own speed. In Kumon, students are given short incremental assignments that help them carry knowledge gained from previous lessons on to the next one. The ultimate goal is for students to progressively build the knowledge and learning skills that will allow them to study above their grade level. Students can then develop a more thorough understanding of a concept, while also gaining confidence in their problem-solving abilities. Self-learning isn’t only tied to academic activities; children of any age are learning through life experiences every day. By promoting problem solving through play activities, you can promote your child’s self-learning ability. Any activity that taps in to your child’s ability to solve problems can promote independent learning. When buying toys or games, consider those that have a problem-solving element and offer fun challenges to build your child’s sense of accomplishment. Solo craft projects and building projects are also great for supporting your child’s need for creative thought and exploration. LK

your child. Discord and separation of parents can cause big feelings and confusion for children and is likely to result in some behavior changes. Counseling may be a good support.
B
ehavior is often a child’s attempt to cope and your job is to do the detective work to find out what underlies the behavior change. The following considerations are good places to start: Sleep Cycle: Your child may now have to get up earlier to go to school or may stay up later in order to get homework done. Maybe she has a hard time ‘winding down’ at nights to fall asleep. Toddlers need 12–14 hours per night, school-aged kids 10–12 hours and teens need 8–9 hours. Hours can’t be “banked” by sleeping more on the weekend. Eating Cycle: A change in diet can have an impact on behavior. Perhaps your child is not ready to eat in the mornings before school and ends up waiting until lunch, or maybe he doesn’t eat a full school lunch. You’ll want to decrease long gaps between eating and pack snacks/lunches that give sustained energy. Change in Primary Relationships: Your relationship provides the primary sense of security and attachment and less time together may result in changes in your child’s behavior. When you have a demanding schedule, you want to carve out designated time daily with
Changes in Routine: Routine is the foundation for the child feeling like their world is predictable and secure. Changes in school, home or afterschool routines can underlie difficult behavior. A change may be as subtle as your child’s bus coming 15 minutes earlier, making the morning routine rushed and chaotic. A substitute teacher or rotating schedule may feel disorganizing for your child. Stressors: Positive stressors could be an exciting trip, event or visitor. Negative stressors may include an upcoming test, homework demands or difficulty with social life at school. Decreasing stressors as well as increasing physical activities and breaks may improve behavior. Illness: When your child doesn’t feel well, it may show through behavior. Allergies, for example, can impact how alert vs. “in a fog” a child feels, which may have a snowball effect of impacting school performance and self-esteem. Medication, even over the counter, can have side effects. If you see behavior changes that you suspect are related to physical discomfort, you may want to check in with your pediatrician. Our Keiki Responsibility
Teaching Your Keiki Household Responsibility We all want a welcoming, clean and comfortable home. However, keeping the house clean is easier said than done with busy little hands at home. Trying to do all of the housework on our own can be tough! It takes a lot more time to clean up than it does to mess up. Enter, teaching our kids household responsibility. If we do everything for them as children, then they will be behind the curve when it’s time for them to make their own home. We don’t want our kids sent off to college not knowing how to do their laundry, pick up after themselves, or wash dishes after they eat. Their future roommates would not appreciate that at all. Here are a few ways we can teach our keiki household responsibility: 1. Start teaching children from a young age the importance of cleaning up after themselves. Children as young as two years old are able to help with many things around the house. A few ways they can help are by putting away their toys immediately after they play, helping to clear off the table after dinner, and even putting away some of their laundry as long as they can reach the drawers.
2. Use a timer and rewards to help your children get their chores done. 3. Set a good example by cleaning up after yourself because, as you know, more is caught than taught. 4. Work together to get the job done. For example, if you need to mop the floor, maybe your children can grab a rag and dry the floor behind you. Or, if you are sweeping, they can hold the dustpan. Young children love spending time with their parents, so doing chores together helps to get the job done and it also nurtures your relationship. JP

Our Keiki Peer pressure
Peer Pressure Today & What You Can Do About It
E
very tween and teen encounters peer pressure, but in an age where social media and texting provide constant connectedness with their friends, the challenge is amplified. How can you make sure that the desire to fit in or the need for approval doesn’t cause your child to engage in risky behavior? What can you do to enable him or her to make good choices around friends? First, remember that as a parent, you still have influence in your adolescent’s life – as much as he or she may lead you to believe otherwise. In fact, studies have found that authoritative parenting – where parents provide warm nurturing alongside clear boundaries and discipline – yields more independent-minded children who are better able to stand up for themselves.
To build a buffer for your child from the negatives of peer pressure, you may want to: • Keep the lines of communication open. Appreciate your child for who he is and acknowledge the good choices he makes. • Affirm independent thinking at home. Allowing your child to disagree with you prepares her to disagree with others. On the other hand, shutting down her opinions could set her up for accepting that same treatment from her peers. Learning how to respectfully disagree is a social skill that will serve her well in all of life. • Role play. You know the types of situations you’re afraid your teen may face where he could be in a tough spot. Work with him on how he will respond, even as far as having specific phrasing in mind. • Set boundaries for social media and cell phones. Many problems occur late at night when teens are isolated in their rooms. Setting the expectation that screens will be turned off by a certain hour, and devices will be kept outside of teens’ bedrooms, gives kids not only a better night’s sleep, but also a respite from peer input. Spending more time around those their own age and exerting independence, are necessary for adolescent development. And not all peer pressure is bad. But teens still need Mom and Dad to be there for them. LK

MAPA Presents Musical About Bullying in Maui Schools
Making Solar Affordable for Maui
NOVEMBER 5TH–JANUARY 29TH // VARIOUS MAUI SCHOOLS Students at Maui preschools and elementary schools are in for a treat this winter when Maui Academy of Performing Arts’ Educational Theatre Tour brings Tea Time for Ogres to schools across the island. Based on the Japanese folktale Momotaro, the 40-minute original musical tells the story of two bullies who learn a valuable lesson about the transformative power of forgiveness and friendship. Tea Time for Ogres, written by Maui playwright Derek Nakagawa with music by Marti Kluth, features four of Maui’s most talented performers – Dylan Bode, Kirsten Otterson, Derek Nakagawa and Kim Vetterli on keyboard. Classroom teachers have online access to grade-level study guides, with discussion guidelines and lesson plans that connect the concepts in the show to Common Core State Standards. Tea Time for Ogres runs November 5 to January 29. For more information, contact Tina Kailiponi, MAPA Educational Theatre Tour Coordinator, at tina@mauiacademy.org or 808-244-8760.

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips
Celebrating your friend’s pregnancy with a fun baby shower is a great way to help her begin (or continue) her journey of parenthood. Here are some tips for creating the ultimate baby shower for the expectant mom and her friends and loved ones. • Ask guests to bring a children’s book with a personal note inscribed in the front inside cover, instead of a card. Their thoughts will be treasured for years to come in the baby’s library.
Weekly Soccer classes in Makawao, Kahului, Lahaina & Kihei Kids Ages 2–6
• Have a buffet for the mom-to-be and guests to snack on as they arrive. Hui No’eau’s Preschool Arts Program The Hui’s Preschool Arts Program is a FREE program, made possible through a $15,000 grant from the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation. This program brings preschool students, their chaperones and teachers to the Hui to participate in fun and interactive art lessons taught by Hui Teaching Artists. Students are guided through a gallery exhibition, experience various art media and tools in the Hui’s professionally equipped public studios, view artist demonstrations, and create a work of art to bring home. Field Trips are two hours in duration plus any additional time for the group to explore, play or enjoy a picnic lunch on the grounds of the beautiful and expansive Kaluanui estate. For more information about the program or to schedule your preschool’s field trip today, contact Katie Peterson at 808-572-6560, Ext. 33 or email katiep@huinoeau.com.

Six MontessoriInspired Ideas for Young Children By ALI GRIMES MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF MAUI “Lessons learned early and often stay with a child for life.” - Dr. Maria Montessori 1. Create a peaceful ritual in the morning for waking up and in the evening before going to bed. If a child has a peaceful entry into her day, and a peaceful ending to her day, she is more likely to be able to maintain that sense of peace and self-awareness throughout the day. Storytelling and singing Sanskrit mantras are some of my favorite nighttime rituals with my boys. Singing or hugging them awake in the morning gives them a warm greeting into their day. 2. Learn about your child’s uniqueness! One of the important skills cultivated in Montessori teachers, is the ability to observe each of their students with an open and curious mind. We can do this as parents as well – get to know our children’s strengths and challenges, and be open to who they truly are, rather than boxing them in to being a certain way. Tim Seldin, President of The Montessori Foundation, cites, “Maria Montessori assumed that children are born intelligent, they simply learn in different ways and progress at their own pace.” 3. Create an organized, child-accessible learning space in your child’s room, playroom, or even in the kitchen or living areas. Create one small section of the home as an organized work area for your small child. It can be one shelf, with a few books
and Melissa & Doug-type learning toys. These items, displayed openly in a child-sized work zone, inspire children to explore the materials. 4. Take daytime or nighttime walks with your child. Engage all five senses. Ask your child what they see, hear, feel (wind or sunshine against their skin), smell, and perhaps taste (if you take a break to drink water or eat a snack). 5. Expose your child to music and art. Don’t hesitate in sharing some of your artistic and musical passions with your children. It doesn’t have to be all kiddie music and artwork. They will enjoy learning about what you love, from you. 6. Take time to teach and model grace and courtesy. Although toddlers are not exactly in the most “graceful” periods of their lives, modeling good eye contact, polite greetings and farewells, and some basic manners will help them learn basic social etiquette from you. Lastly, enjoy the ride! As someone once said to me, “The days are long, but the years are fast.”

Ways to Improve Your Child’s Memory three and four numbers, your child will better remember pairs, trios and quartets of information. One boy down the street may be named Joe, and his brother named Doug. But Joe-and-Doug is easier to recall.
W
hen your child struggles with remembering things, especially when it relates to learning, they can become frustrated. But there’s hope. Memorization is a skill that can be learned and improved, and there are many ways you can help. One method is to give your child increasingly complex instructions. Rather than tell him to go make his bed in the morning, you could instruct him that you want him to make his bed, brush his teeth, and put away his pajamas. Then, when you see that he competently completes multiple tasks in a row, add one or two more elements. Increase the difficulty until following multiple steps comes naturally for him. Assist your child by showing her how to chunk information into groups, rather than individual pieces. Much in the same way we can remember phone numbers by grouping them into sets of
Psychologists suggest using multiple senses when “encoding” or inputting information. Each sense follows a different pathway to the brain, so when the same information travels multiple paths, there are more routes for retrieving it later. This is why teachers often incorporate songs and movements in the classroom, and you can use them at home too. When your child struggles to remember facts or concepts, help him create motions to match. For common facts such as states and capitals, you can often find songs online on sites such as www. songsforteaching.com. Teach your child how to use mnemonic devices – those funny sayings and acronyms created just for memorizing tricky information. For instance, “Always Eat An Apple, Says A Nurse,” to remember the seven continents (Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, South America, Antarctica, North America). Or, “The principal is your pal” for distinguishing between the homophones “principle” and “principal.”

Music of the Heart Why music? It has become common knowledge that playing an instrument strengthens the capacity of the brain to learn in a multitude of ways and raises test scores. In addition to developing both the left and right sides of the brain, it also develops discipline and perseverance. Music has the ability to express emotions and can often touch hearts in ways that words cannot. This is why music is so important.

Ohana STRESS
Happy Holidays Without the Hassle When happy holidays become horrible headaches, something needs to give. A simple solution is to tweak a tradition, using one of these “tradition makeover” ideas. Select a Substitute The Brakel family found an inventive way to display their Christmas ornaments when an out-of-town trip made their tradition of having a live tree impractical. Bruce Brakel and his daughters created a conical shape out of ribbons anchored to a spot on the ceiling, and weighted them down with bricks covered in wrapping paper, like gifts. Then they hung their ornaments along the strands of ribbon. When considering a substitute, Brakel suggests thinking about which aspects of the old observance can be preserved. “Take baby steps,” says Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor Grant Stenzel. “Ease into it instead of being black and white; all or nothing.” Go Radical – This Once Some years can be harder than others to keep up traditions – whether due to a move, a death in the family, or multiple challenges piling up. In those instances it may be best to forgo a tradition to remain sane. But it doesn’t mean that will be easy. Traditions can feel sacred. After all, as Stenzel says, “Traditions are harder because we have such emotions tied to them – not just current, but emotions from our childhood.”

Tag-Team It If one person is responsible for keeping the traditions going, but is overwhelmed, it might be time to enlist help for them. Evaluate which traditionmaking tasks can be passed on. Can you trust an older child to put up decorations? Would the other spouse be willing to take over addressing cards?

Tips for Being on Time

Reading is Thinking By TANI Toprakci
your GPS destination or print out directions. Put everything by the door where you’ll see it. Being prepped for launch can eliminate the last-minute delays that frequently cause lateness.
W
hether you tend towards being fashionably late or excessively tardy, punctuality is a skill you can pick up. Contrary to what many believe, punctuality is not about being controlled by the clock; rather, it is about being the master of your time. Try one (or all) of these methods for being better in charge of your arrival: • Pad your departure time. Oftentimes tardiness results from underestimation. A ten-minute drive might not account for traffic or the extra time required to find a parking space. Make a habit of adding an extra five to ten minutes to your transit time. • Put together the things you will need for departure, in advance. Gather your keys and sunglasses, set out your clothes the night before, and load
• Set reminder alarms on your smartphone. Admit it – sometimes you’re late because you got distracted by email, Facebook, or a chat with a friend. A repeating tone on your smartphone can be enough to set you back on track. • On the other hand, you may be better off avoiding distraction in the first place. Try not to engage in distracting activities right before departure time. Unless you’re checking for one last text about a meeting, most of those activities can wait until later. • Make stops/run errands after your scheduled event, not before. You may think that the stop at the dry cleaners will be a quick in-and-out, but don’t count on it, especially when you’re under a deadline to arrive somewhere. • Always double-check your calendar. There’s nothing like arriving at 3:00 for a meeting that started at 2:00, to make you feel out of control. Making a habit of reviewing each day’s schedule first thing in the morning can head off any unintended delays. LK
When you read, are you just passing over the words or are you absorbing the content? What is the point of reading? We read to communicate, to entertain, to feel, to induce thought, to share and to understand ideas. When children learn to actively read, they access diverse and flexible thinking skills. People often think of reading as phonetics and the ability to read fluently; but this is only a small part of the function of reading. We want our children to be meaning-makers when they read. This is where the thinking part of reading comes into play. Here are a few active reading strategies you can use with children of all ages. It can be as simple as an open discussion between you and your child as you read – actively asking for their input. Or you can have fun with post-its – making notes in the books as you read along. Modeling your own thinking process is always the most helpful to giving your child insight on how to use these reading strategies. Connect (TS, TW, TT): Find ways to relate to the text by asking your child to make connections to their self (Text-to-Self), to make connections to
their world or the world at large (Text-to-World), and lastly, to make connections to other books (Text-to-Text). Predict (P): Use the text clues, such as title, illustrations and the story line, to predict what you think might happen next. Question (Q): Take note whenever the book makes you question or wonder about something. Summarize (S): Take the time to recall and synthesize the entire text. Can you summarize the whole book in one sentence? Evaluate (E): Form an opinion about the text you have just read. Give evidence to back up your opinion. Give the Gift of ‘Ohana
TUE, NOV 10
By HEATHER GREENWOOD-Junkermeier What stories do you have about your grandparents? Your aunties and uncles? Your parents? Your childhood? Do your children and grandchildren know these stories? This year, consider adding a holiday tradition of sharing these stories so they are passed on to younger generations. There are many ways to begin, so here are a few questions to consider: Who will gather the stories? Gathering stories is most fun when more than one generation works together. Often intermediate and high school students get excited about interviewing and recording grandparents – especially if they can make a movie out of it. But if all the youngsters are on the mainland, you can gather and write your own stories. What stories should I share? Starting out is often the most difficult step. Consider some of the following questions as you begin: • What is your full name? What does it mean? • Do you have any nicknames? • Where were you born? • Who are your siblings? What are their full names? • What are your parents’ full names?
Di ne out Join us for the 6th annual

• What is (was) your job? • What are some memories you have as a child? • Describe your elementary school. • What chores were yours as a child? As a teenager? • What did you do for fun as a teenager? • Do you remember your grandparents or great grandparents? • How did you celebrate holidays? (Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Halloween, etc.)
Help us to enrich our community by dining at one of the participating restaurants
How will I share these stories? This is where the holiday cheer comes in. Whether you have written, typed, or recorded the stories, the last and most important step is sharing them. Wrap up the stories, send them as email attachments, or have a movie night and watch the interviews together. Make this holiday season one of special moments that are shared by all generations.
