Find Your Voice And Stay Human

2018

Several years ago, I received an oval granite touchstone engraved with this question: “What Would Buddha Do?”

That query stood out no matter the room this stone occupied whether in our home or in the Festival office — and believe me it can be more than a little unnerving to see it on the bedroom night table when you're about to make love or staring back at you as you make your morning coffee to head into your day or inside the freezer next to the Ben & Jerry'sor on top of the television while CNN is whizzing around the globe covering humanity's latest inhumanity or triumph — this simple piece of granite has reminded me every day to take action personally and professionally to support the highest aspirations in all of us. The stone suggests timeless timely constant and yet ever changing answers that seem all the more important in light of recent world events.

Feel free to substitute any enlightened being of your choice past or present for the Buddha. For me the value of the stone is not in its reference to Buddha but in the implications of its question: Am I willing to contemplate the challenge it poses to my core values and to my decisions in my life and life’s work? I have often said that at the end of the day the Maui Film Festival is about turning darkness into light. From the first moment that light shines on any Festival screenwe have one primary mission — to turn the "reel" world into a way of being in the “real” world that respects the integrity and beauty of both the natural order and the realm of human interaction. For this reason the granite cornerstone of this Festival's programming philosophy can be summarized in one phrase: lifeaffirming storytelling.

Inspired by the engraved wisdom of the Festival’s ‘Pet Rock’, as noted above, the 19th annual Maui Film Festival will again celebrate enlightenment that entertains.

In the film industry, the lynchpin of global media culture, all too often the lowest common denominator of our collective wisdom, or lack thereof, not only passes for entertainment but also generates record breaking box office numbers. Every year we are challenged to identify the films that aspire higher higher. Again this year, I am pleased to report that in celebration of its 19th ‘Birthday’the Festival staff has put together another ‘jewel box’ festival that truly sparkles and shines. With the hard work behind us we prepare now for the pure pleasure of five days of great filmmaking by talented filmmakers an AList of honorees worthy of a walk down the red carpet at the Academy Awards®, Spirit Awards or Toronto. Sundance and Telluride film festivals and — Maui being the home of Pacific Rim Cuisine — exceptionally unforgettable culinary celebrations too!

On behalf of the entire Maui Film Festival ‘ohana (family) — and with a special nod to the festival’s übertalented codirectors Stella Rivers and Wendy and Ben Goodman — Our ‘Ohana Has built an experience for you and your ‘Ohana to Fall in Love With!

Welcome to the 2018 Maui FIlm Festival and Enjoy the Ride!

THE OCEAN: OUR FOUNDATION N

Directed by: Malia Cahill, Amia Voluntad, Chloe Chin, Ku‘ulei Kaleleiki, Natalia Polinskeyy

Referencing the coral polyp’s central role in the Kumulipo, or Hawaiian creation chant, as a metaphor for its current role as warning sign of the destruction modern humans are doing to our oceans, this film features voiceovers by local ocean advocates Ekolu Lindsey, Lily Solano and Paige Alms about re discovering our kuleana to protect our ocean.
