Home Sweet Home.

Festival Co-Directors Stella Rivers Wendy Goodman Ben Goodman aka PR Director

Founder/Director Barry Rivers

2019 From the abundant beauty of Maui's sun, moon and stars, sand, sea and surf and breathtakingly unique and verdant bounty of its flora and fauna, Maui had the Rivers ‘ohana at "Aloha". But there's been much more keeping us "all in" for so long. Key among them is the deep connection so many of us feel for the insight and wisdom of Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures. Their joyful and plaintive music, powerful and sensual dance, its impossible to resist and overwhelmingly powerful chants and righteously indignant political and peace activism also inspire and move me beyond words. All of these things reverberate through the Festival that we present this year. It is a panoramic exploration of life well lived alongside insightful cinema that digs deeply into issues of the day and challenges presented by the future. As longtime peace and environmental activists on the mainland 40 years ago, the Rivers 'ohana was drawn to the heartfelt, and eventually successful, efforts of the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana (PKO) to stop the bombing of the sacred island of Kaho'olawe. To us, the PKO's protests provided a shining example about what was possible when like-minded people pull together for a just cause. The PKO's activism also provided crystal clear lessons in how the ripples of many perfectly pitched pebbles, and the occasional boulder or two, tossed by the Davids of the world can triumph over its Goliaths. In this instance they also ignited a contemporary rebirth and renaissance of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language),

Oli (chant), hula (dance) and mele (song) and a reinvigorated respect for traditional cultural practices and traditions. At the time, the idea of making our 'Home' an island where a culture was literally being reborn in contemporary times lit us up. We wanted in. Jumped in. And found ourselves in love. The Festival you'll hopefully enjoy this year in no small way was inspired by those very early Kaho'olawe protests. And here we are 40 years later offering on of our Hawai'i-centric Festivals ever and a program that remains independent and meaningful and gratifying. Please visit MauiFilmFestival.com/program to view this year’s film program. For all this, and all who help manifest each year's event, we are extremely grateful and proud. Doing the right thing matters. That said, and this year being our 20th, and still hard to believe, annual Maui Film Festival, We want to conclude this year’s message with a big shout to all of you who have supported us and all of our longtime sponsors — key among them all the resorts in Wailea, the HTA, County of Maui and all the private sector sponsors and individuals who, for so many years, have been the wind under out wings.

SO YOU WANNA MAKE MOVIES?

The 2019 Maui Film Festival Visionary Award Honoree and mot recently the Director of FANTASTIC FUNGI…The Magic Beneath Us.

Let’s face it, all us attending the 2019 Maui FIlm Festival pull of the silver screen and the icons that populate our favorite films. We all at one, or many, points were gonna give it, whatever it was for you, up to make movies. And for a relative few of us it took all the blood, sweat and tears we could muster to make a film to share with the world. The filmmakers on this panel have all been there and done just that. Hear their stories. Share their Joy.

As is the only cinematographer in the world who has been shooting time-lapse 24/7 continuously for well over three decades, Schwartzberg is a visual artist breaking barriers, connecting with audiences, and telling stories that celebrate life and reveal the mysteries and wisdom of nature, people and places. Mr. Schwartzberg will share this One on One Conversation about his life’s work with Dr. Ron Alexander, who last lit up the Maui Film Festival Filmmakers Panels with his One on One with Louis Psihoyos. CHANGING THE WORLD. ONE FILM AT A TIME.

TO ENLIGHTEN OR ENTERTAIN?

Whether your passion is to create a four minute short or a ninety minute feature, if the cinema activist in you is driven to push back against those things you believe need to challenged by alternative voices and images, then the experiences of this eclectic group of filmmakers is just what the doctored ordered.

Granted it's not a binary choice. With rare exception, most all successful films are a hybrid of the DNA from each petri dish. The trick to making movies that matter mandates that every filmmaker must decide which path their passion is most aligned with and to jump in with both feet and hold on for both dear life and films worth watching. These artists know how to do that.

Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care but is that what’s really happening? Technology is here to stay. By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization we can learn how to navigate it more safely together as well as to inspire people of all ages, but especially kids, to self regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other. Director: Scilla Andreen. BEYOND CLIMATE - 8:30 PM

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recent report, entitled Global Warming of 1.5°C, indicates that it is possible to stabilize the climate provided we act within the next decade to be globally carbon neutral by 2050. Guided by Renowned scientist, broadcaster and environmentalist David Suzuki, Beyond Climate takes viewers beyond the headlines and into the heart of climate change issues. The film holistically connects the larger patterns of climate change with the human dimension. Directed by Ian Mauro.

Alice Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, this Impressive, highly emotional and bitterly funny homage to sensual French cinema, follows a beautiful young wife and mom taking charge of her life after her husband’s affairs are revealed. Indiewire raved "France's answer to Carey Mulligan, Emilie Piponnier, its star, dominates every frame with a mesmerizing screen presence.” Alice is a triumphant first-time achievement.

Becoming Nobody This film is the quintessential portal to Ram Dass’ life and teachings. Whether as a rock star Harvard psychologist, counter-culture rascally adventurer, Eastern holy man, stroke survivor or compassionate caregiver, this film captures a loving man full of joy, wit, honesty and wisdom, at ease in conversation while sharing his considerable pains and pleasures whose life experiences have freed him from the attachments of his ‘Somebodyness’ and transformed him into the radiant soul who now inspires a new generation.

Botero Shot in 10 cities in China, Colombia, France, Italy, Monaco and the United States, this kaleidoscopic and poetic behind-the-scenes chronicle of the life and art of Fernando Botero, is an intensely private painter and sculptor known all over the world — including the Grand Wailea on Maui where his work i widely displayed. Botero’s commitment to a unique artistic vision power fueled his rise from provincial Colombia to become “the Maestro,” still active in his studio at 86 years old.

Cracked Up With courage and, of course, humor, master impressionist, comedian and Saturday Night Live veteran Darrell Hammond reveals his dark history of child abuse. Brilliant in the spotlight, Darrell was misdiagnosed and wrongly medicated for decades, struggling with drugs, alcohol and nightmarish flashbacks. Balancing humor and tragedy to craft a beautiful story of hope and resilience, director Michelle Esrick’s poignant film illuminates the devastating effects of childhood trauma and the importance of setting repressed memories free.

Gay Chorus Deep South This Winner of the 2019 Audience Documentary Award at the Tribeca Film Festival that tells the story of over 300 singers traveling from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma to share a message of music, love and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Amazingly, it offers a glimpse of a less divided America, where the things that divide us—faith, politics, sexual identity—are set aside by the soaring power of music, humanity and a little drag.”

Moananuiākea: One Ocean. One People. One Canoe. This powerful documentary celebrates the historic Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage that connected countless individuals and communities from around the globe. A voyage that also represented the fulfillment of the vision of Nainoa Thompson and his contemporaries, the passing of the mantle to the next generation of kānaka maoli who will retain the skills of their ancestors and perpetuate this tradition for generations to come so the legacy of Hōkūleʻa can last for 1,000 generations.

One Addiction...incarceration...family trauma. We've become a culture that enshrines pain, at the same time offering it as entertainment. But how can we go beyond the seductive reality show narrative of shattered lives? How can we find the missing pieces that will allow us to heal and transcend? This powerful visually arresting film explores the elusive bridge between the broken and the unbreakable. Using the words of the great Zen scholar Alan Watts, the filmmakers link hardcore devastation to a powerful awareness of our deeper humanity. ONE is an emotionally visual journey that asks the questions, what do we want? What would satisfy us? What is it that we are really yearning after?

We Rise Up This culture-shifting documentary film is way more than a Movie. Why? Because it's equally a Movement that, in collaboration with many prominent thought, social, political, and business leaders, presents a new model of success for the world. Transitioning between intimate dialogue to cinematically stunning visuals and musicdriven interstitials, the sneak-peak of this film will take the audience into a profound personal journal of inquiry, reflection, and action designed to significantly impact the definition of social responsibility, and to generate new discourses that incite personal, cultural, and global change.
