What Would Buddha Do?

What Would You Do? 2015

Several years ago, I received an oval granite touchstone sandblasted and engraved with this question: "What Would Buddha Do?" Regardless which room this stone has occupied, whether in our home or in the Festival office — and believe me it can be more than a little unnerving to see it on the bedroom night table when you're about to make love, or on the window sill of the bathroom as you're about to take care of business, or inside the freezer next to the Ben & Jerry's, or on top of the television while CNN is whizzing around the globe covering humanity's latest inhumanity or triumph — this simple piece of granite has reminded me every day to take action personally and professionally to support the highest aspirations in all of us. The stone suggests timeless, timely, constant and yet everchanging answers that seem all the more important in light of recent world events.

Feel free to substitute any enlightened being of your choice, past or present, for the Buddha. For me, the value of the stone is not in its reference to Buddha but in the implications of its question. Am I willing to contemplate the challenge it poses to my core values and to my decisions at work? I have often said that, at the end of the day, the Maui Film Festival is about turning darkness into light. From the first moment that light shines on any Festival screen, we have one primary mission — to turn the "reel" world into a way of being in the “real” world that respects the integrity and beauty of both the natural order and the realm of human interaction. For this reason, the granite

cornerstone of this Festival's programming philosophy can be summarized in one phrase: lifeaffirming storytelling.

Put another way, the 16th annual Maui Film Festival celebrates entertainment that enlightens.

In the film industry, which is part of global media culture, all too often the lowest common denominator of our collective wisdom (or lack thereof) not only passes for entertainment but also generates record breaking box office numbers. Every year we are challenged to identify the films that aspire higher. I am pleased to report that, in celebration of its 16th ‘Birthday/Birthyear’, the Festival staff has put together another ‘jewel box’ festival that truly sparkles and shines. With the hard work behind us, we prepare now for the pure pleasure of five days of great filmmaking by talented filmmakers, an AList of honorees worthy of a walk down the red carpet at the Academy Awards®, Spirit Awards or Toronto, Sundance and Telluride film festivals and — Maui being the birthplace and home of Pacific Rim Cuisine — exceptional unforgettable culinary celebrations to boot! On behalf of the entire Maui Film Festival ‘ohana (family), and with a special nod to the festival’s übertalented codirectors, Stella Rivers and Wendy and Ben Goodman — welcome to the 2015 Maui FIlm Festival! Enjoy the Ride!

for daring to dream big dreams and then delivering brilliant performances when opportunity knocks.

Scott Eastwood is a third generation, native Californian, born in the waterfront city of Monterey. Even though he was born in California, Scott grew up in both California and Hawaii, dividing his time between his mother (Jaclyn) and his father (Clint). From an early age, Scott was always active, and when he wasn't playing Pop Warner Football, he was surfing, fishing, or doing some other outdoor activity. After graduating high school, Scott enrolled at Santa Monica City College, doing everything from parking cars to working construction, as he pursued a career in acting. He eventually graduated from Loyola Maymount University with a degree in communica tions. For the past several years, Scott has been traveling the world, living life, shooting movies, and surfing exotic beaches. He's been very fortunate to have great friends and a large family, all of whom have played a role in making him the individual he is today.

In Vanity Fair magazine’s March 2013 Oscar edition, Scott was singled out as one of Hollywood’s “Rising Stars.” Building on this honor, Scott has landed roles in several highprofile films, including SUICIDE SQUAD, from DC Comics, and director David Ayer, along with the asyetuntitled Oliver Stone film about Edward Snowden. This April 2015, Scott can be seen as bull rider “Luke Collins” in THE LONGEST RIDE, an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel, starring opposite Britt Robertson and Alan Alda. Scott’s other recent films include the World War II movie, FURY, alongside Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf, as well as the independent features, DAWN PATROL and WALK OF FAME. Scott also had a lead role in Lionsgate’s TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D, as well as TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE. Scott’s other films include, INVICTUS, GRAN TORINO, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, CARMEL, AN AMERICAN CRIME and Lionsgate’s swimming film, PRIDE, along side Bernie Mac and Terrence Howard.

In the second half of the 19th century, Eadweard Muybridge, the father of motion pictures, embarks on an obsessive project to record on film "the motion of life" in all of its abundance. His epic quest is eclipsed only by the depth of his jealousy over his beautiful, young wife Flora. As the project progresses, his paranoia over her fidelity consumes him, until questions arise about his son's paternity, causing him to erupt. Writer/director Kyle Rideout and cowriter Josh Epstein captivate with an intimate, poignant portrait of a man whose maniacal insecurities and blazing genius sprang from the same searing source.

Variety, the film industry's 'bible', review of this sweet hearted country music seasoned love story favorably compared to the the Academy Award winning ONCE and BEGIN AGAIN. We couldn't agree more. The simple truth is that two musicians, played by Katherine Heigl and Ben Barnes, both down on their luck — she: a crashed music career in her wake, and he: a barely surviving itinerant musician — find both each other and love, when they most need it and least expect it. It's a perfect at any film festival 'find' Enjoy! 90 min. Unrated

Unexpected

Directed By: Kris Swanberg Producer: Andrea Roa Screenwriter: Megan Mercier, Kris Swanberg Cinematographer: Dagmar WeaverMadsen Editor: Zach Clark Music: Keegan DeWitt Cast: Cobie Smulders, Anders Holm, Gail Bean A delicate and beautiful story about a 30yearold Chicago highschool teacher and one of her students who both discover they're pregnant around the same time. Through it all this deftly told tale remains utterly downtoearth, smallscale and warmhearted in the best ways. This is an accom plished piece made by and about women that has 'juice and is well deserving of special consideration in the indie marketplace as a true and rare gem. Very SemiSerious

Directed By: Leah Wolchok Executive Producers: Deborah Shaffer, Regina K. Scully, Bruce Sinofsky Producer: Leah Wolchok Cinematographer: Kirsten Johnson Editors: Nels Bangerter, Scott Stevenson “Cartoons either make the strange familiar or the familiar strange,” says Bob Mankoff, the subject of Very SemiSerious. Mankoff would know; he’s the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, which has been a living museum of America’s best cartoons for 90 years. Very SemiSerious delivers an endearing history of the magazine’s storied cartoons and gives its audience a view of the world through the quirky and imaginative lens of cartoonists, a distinct breed of people indeed. The film goes behind the scenes with Mankoff as he dives into the process of creating, selecting and publishing the magazine’s brilliant cartoons. It also offers a delightful parade of characters as it introduces the colorful minds behind the art — such people as Mort Gerberg, George Booth, Roz Chast and countless others who put their pride on the line by submitting cartoons to the magazine that rejects hundreds each week. Very SemiSerious is a lesson in the power of humor, which can be a harmful weapon, a soothing antidote, a psychologist of humanity or an artifact of cultural zeitgeist. 87 min.
