Koa’s Seaside Grill
he Maui News’ poll is the island’s original “Best of Maui” contest, and remains the go-to place for all things great about Maui. Each year, we call upon some special island experts: you! For nearly two months, we’ve been receiving ballots from readers near and far, who shared with us some of their favorite things to do and places to dine on Maui. And now, we’re ready to reveal the results! Read on to discover where to head for the finest cultural experience, what Maui’s favorite chef is cooking up, the best place to dine with the kids, and where to tee up for that next golf outing. Then, get started on planning your next Maui staycation or vacation. Here’s what some readers had to say about their favorites:
Best New Restaurant t just had its soft opening in March, yet Koa’s Seaside Grill in Lahaina has already rocketed to the top of the charts to be named “Best New Restaurant on Maui.” Its portions are ginormous, the food is based on tried-andtrue recipes, and it hangs out over the water, making for a winning combination that can’t be beat. “Koa’s Seaside Grill is a place on the water at an incredible Front Street Lahaina location, where you can relax and enjoy great food at reasonable prices,” says General Manager Buff Weaver. “Koa’s team wants all who join us to feel like guests in our homes.” Owners are Jerry and Lucy Corson, veteran restaurateurs with the hugely popular Gazebo in Napili. Their new venture is now open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Choose from the shady firstfloor level, or head upstairs to the rooftop and duck under an umbrella or just soak in the sun. Either way, you get stellar ocean views. Been to the Hash House A-Go-Go in Las Vegas? Koa’s breakfast entrees compare in enormity. Do bring a hearty appetite. For breakfast, wake up to the mountain of fried rice that can feed a small army, and the Big Kahuna omelette packed with bacon, Portuguese sausage, onions, mushrooms, avocado and pepper jack cheese, served with potatoes or rice and toast. The breakfast menu is based on the winning Gazebo concept, of course. Breakfast is served all the way until 3 p.m. Conversely, lunch-goers may dive right into oyster po’ boys and meat loaf sandwiches starting at 9 a.m. Happy hour is jumping daily from 3 to 5:30 p.m., when you get $2 off all specialty drinks, house wines and draft beers. Crowd-pleasing appetizers include peel-and-eat edamame, seared ahi in ginger-soy sauce, steamer clams

in white-wine broth, and spinach-andartichoke dip with crunchy crostini. Seafood lovers will also find crab cakes, crispy calamari, coconut-crusted prawns with sweet Thai chili sauce, and oysters on the half shell. Dinner entrees beckon with rock-salt roasted prime rib served with horseradish and au jus, fresh catch with crab mix and lobster sauce, and kalua-style
pork plate with seasonal vegetables. Desserts such as creme brulee with candied pineapple in an actual pineapple bowl take it all over the top. So do the vivid Maui sunsets. In addition, Koa’s Seaside Grill partners with ‘Ulalena to offer the least expensive dinner and show package in Lahaina. Kids menu packages are also available.

“When I want romance, food that is off the charts and wonderful service, Gerard’s is the place. For impeccable service and amazing food, you have to go to Spago. But when I’ m just kickin’ it and I want to have a good meal at a great price, it has to be Cafe O’ Lei.” —Cris South, Makawao “‘ Ulalena is a cultural phenomenon that is an experience not to be missed. I’ve seen it several times and it’s always a moving experience.” —Patricia A. Long, Coos Bay, Ore. “Komoda’s Bakery is still the No. 1 for pastries. Whenever we go off island, whether to Oahu or Vegas, we have requests for Komoda’ s pastries.” —Frances Oshiro, Kihei “Volunteering on Vacation, Pacific Whale Foundation’s program which gives an opportunity to contribute to various environmental efforts while on Maui, has been very rewarding.” —Geraldine Niemann, Taylorville, Ill. “Polli’s food is only surpassed by its friendly and service-driven staff. It always feels like family when we arrive.” —Georgia Hausauer, Lakeville, Minn. “Ko is by far the best ambiance, food, service, music and kama‘aina prices all in one place.” —Robert Marochi, Kihei “We were aboard the Teralani for my 50th birthday. It was a wonderful evening, sailing into the sunset with lots of whales around us, great staff and delicious food. Definitely an adventure to repeat.” —Sharon Morgan, B.C., Canada

Backpack Buddies program feeding Maui’s ‘nutritionally disadvantaged’ Editor’ s note: The Maui Food Bank was once again the recipient of both cash and food donations from people voting in this year’ s Best of Maui contest. As longtime supporters of this nonprofit organization, we encourage our readers to support this important Maui cause. While some elementary school students on Maui are stressing about getting good grades or keeping up with the latest fashion trends, others have another concern on their minds: where their next meal will come from. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 16.2-million children in America are living in homes
without consistent access to adequate food — that’s one out of every five kids. Of course, Hawaii is not exempt from these numbers. “A lot of people think that we’re in paradise and that there’s not such an issue here,” says Maui Food Bank Executive Director Richard Yust. “But with the high cost of living on Maui, it has forced a lot of families to cut back, and the only thing left for families to cut back on is food.” For some students, their primary food sources are school lunches provided throughout the week. To combat this problem, Maui Food Bank launched its Backpack Buddies program this past spring, which provides meals to last students through the weekend.
Every Friday, the program hands out 350 backpacks at six schools across Maui and Molokai. Two additional schools are expected to join the program within the month. “It’s a well-known fact that children who are undernourished are not only physically suffering, but they suffer mentally because they don’t have the nutrients to help keep them focused and able to study,” explains Maui Food Bank Development Director Marlene Rice. Rice shared a story of a young girl and her mother who came to the Maui Food Bank in need of food. When asked why she wasn’t in school, the girl explained that she didn’t have any money for lunch.
Every Friday, Maui Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies program hands out 350 backpacks filled with food at local schools, providing meals to last a child through the weekend. Photo courtesy Maui Food Bank
“First of all, she was really embarrassed by it,” says Rice. “But second of all, what parent wants to send their child off knowing that they’re going to be in a classroom full of kids, and their child might be the only one who doesn’t have a lunch that day?” The food nourishes more than just their bodies, Yust adds. “It’s something a child should not have to worry about,” he says. “By us pro-
viding these backpacks, I think it gives them a little emotional support knowing that they have some food.” The good news is that the Maui community can help address this issue that’s happening in our backyard. Because all food distributed through Backpack Buddies must be purchased — rather than sourced from food donations — monetary gifts are preferred. “One of the advantages of us donating money is our
buying power,” explains Rice. We purchase through the food bank network, so we’re able to maximize every dollar donated.” Businesses are also encouraged to join the program as sponsors, where a $2,500 donation would provide a total of 500 backpacks. To learn more about how you can help, call the Maui Food Bank at 243-9500 or visit www.mauifoodbank. org.

Mama’s Fish House Best Restaurant Overall epeat winner Mama’s Fish House once again raises the bar to stellar new heights as the Best Restaurant Overall on Maui. Diners rave about its idyllic coconut grove, ocean surf, mai tais, impeccable service and fresh-as-it-gets fish. But in 2013, it’s not only a winner, but a thriver, a survivor, and a supporter of community interests. The iconic restaurant oceanfront on Kuau Cove celebrates 40 successful years in 2013, a feat in and of itself. It also made headlines as being the first private venture in the state to subsidize a FAD, or fishing aggregate device, in deep ocean waters, as an aid to local fishermen. On Father’s Day, Mama’s and its large staff of employees and celebrating diners were brushed too close for comfort with a raging cane fire. “We all saw a way of life for 325 employees threatened that day, and because of the Maui Fire Department, a major tragedy was averted,” Karen Christenson, daughter of founders Floyd and Doris Christenson, says. “There aren’t words to express our gratitude.” Most recently, Tropical Storm Flossie bore down on Maui’s north shore with an incredible thunder and lightening show combined with high winds, and Mama’s team hunkered down, protected and fed hundreds of stranded diners — including movie star Jamie Lee Curtis. Now, it’s back to business as usual, as the consistent No. 1 choice to dine for anyone who visits our island. Of course, locals covet the chance to dine there on special occasions. It’s at the top of Maui’s heap, and memories of meals linger long on the palate. This year, Mama’s also won Best Seafood, and got Honorable Mentions for Best Ambience, Best Appetizer, and last, but certainly not least, Best Service. So it’s no wonder it ranks as Best Overall Restaurant on Maui. The look, the feel, the taste all transport you into a Polynesian paradise. Even before you arrive at the valet stand, you’ll see a white fishing boat beckoning at the entrance. Walk along the gecko-shaped stones under the coconut grove, pass an

outrigger canoe and a banyan arch. Peruse all of the celebrity photos on the wall before being seated and wait for the meal of a lifetime, whether it be lunch, dinner or pupu at the bar. “My latest fave is Executive Chef Perry Bateman’s grilled mahimahi salad with kale and quinoa — served with a little glass of chilled coconut water — healthy, fresh and so, so ono!” says Christenson. “Then there are the new flavors on his sashimi trio you have to have!” Sip a vintage tropical such as the Mai Tai Roa Ae, created in 1944 by Trader Vic Bergeron. Or opt for a contemporary
Pink Floyd, named after the legendary owner. Bread is baked fresh daily, and an amuse bouche of, say, coconut, crab and lemongrass soup is brought to the table to whet your appetite. At least six varieties of fresh catch are served daily. The menu lists the fishermen who caught them. The most popular entree is mahimahi stuffed with lobster and crab, baked in a macadamia-nut crust, caught by Greg Lind out of Hana Bay. Poi, the beloved starchy Hawaiian staple, is complementary with any appetizer. Just ask your server. “You don’t know poi until you’ve
tried Chef Perry’s fresh poi,” says Christenson. “And, I’ve been eating poi for a very long time, since it was served in a yellow pyrex bowl on the kitchen table at Keahi’s of Lahaina, where it was as customary to take your slippers off at the door as it was to stick two or three fingers in the poi bowl as you walked into the house.” Of course, you must indulge in Mama’s desserts as well. Do try the Polynesian Black Pearl, a lilikoi-chocolate mousse in a seashell-shaped pastry. Sip private-estate coffee from a French-press urn, and know you’ve had the best meal on Maui.

Sheldon Simeon
Chef Sheldon Simeon gives the shaka as he sits on the seawall in Lahaina. For now, he’s mum about his next career move, but rumor has it that it’s Mala Wailea.
Best Chef e’s the man of the hour. The talk of the town. Or perhaps we should say, “restaurant world.” In fact, people in the industry here even teasingly say they have, “Sheldon Envy.” That’s because local boy Sheldon Simeon has catapulted to the No. 1 spot for Best Chef on Maui in The Maui News and all the other island publications this year. He’s a James Beard Award nominee, and he garnered international acclaim by making it to the final stage of “Top Chef” Seattle” last season on the Bravo cable network; was “Best New Chef People’s Choice” in Food & Wine magazine; and a Rising Star Hawaii Chef twice. Oh yes, let’s not forget he’s a previous Best Chef winner in The Maui News. “It’s an honor for me to be named Best Chef on Maui by The Maui News again,” he says. “It’s just been crazy the past two years. It’s been a whirlwind. It’s amazing how life can change so quickly.” The 31-year-old was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii. He first attended the Culinary Institute of the Pacific on Oahu and then Maui Culinary Academy here, before taking off for an internship at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., where he met his future, Maui-born wife. He eventually became executive chef at Star Noodle in Lahaina, when his star power went through the roof and he left to pursue his own culinary dream. A case in point about his star power,
H
was this summer, when he was spotted at a Four Seasons Resort Maui culinary event in Wailea. Simeon was standing at the same high-top table as Chris Noth, aka “Mr. Big” of “Sex and the City” fame, and people approached the chef one after another for pictures and autographs as the famous actor’s jaw dropped, wondering, “who’s he?!” The bigger question may be, “Where is he?” In recent months, Simeon has made numerous celebrity chef appearances everywhere from the trendy Vintage Cave on Oahu to Travaasa Hana to Pacific’o in Lahaina. Most recently, he appeared at two other Lahaina benefits at Mala Ocean Tavern and its sister restaurant, Honu Seafood & Pizza, both owned by a former Best Chef on Maui, Mark Ellman. Tonight, he’ll appear in an all-star lineup of celebrity chefs at the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa’s Malama Maui that is part of the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival. A few tickets were available as of press time. Of course, with Simeon’s recent appearances at Honu and Mala, as well as a guest chef spot with Ellman at restaurateur Shep Gordon’s house as part of an auction item at the recent Maui Calls, rumors are starting to spread like wildfire that he will soon be named chef at Mala Wailea, where Gordon is the managing partner, and Ellman is the chef partner. With the implementation of new frontof-the-house man, Francesco Greco, who was with the benchmark celebrity hotspot, Toscana, in Los Angeles for 22 years, Mala Wailea should have an incredible team, indeed. Stay tuned. The Maui News / CARLA TRACY photo

Polli’s Mexican Restaurant Best Ethnic Restaurant sign outside Polli’s Mexican Restaurant in Makawao town reads, “Come in and eat or we’ll both starve!” Don’t be fooled by this plea for business — Polli’s has a loyal group of fans who have voted it not only as serving the best Mexican food on Maui, but the best ethnic restaurant overall. This cozy eatery in the heart of Makawao is famous for its fresh salsa and guacamole, made in-house daily, then served alongside a portion of both corn and flour tortilla chips. The menu options continue to trigger the tastebuds, with the popular fish taco plate that overflows with fresh ingredients and savory flavors. Of course, any Mexican restaurant worth its salt must have something tasty to wash it all down. Polli’s has that covered, too, with heaping glasses of margaritas that come in fun flavors including lilikoi, strawberry and mango. So turn any meal into a fiesta, and head over to Polli’s for the island’s finest Mexican flavors. And like the sign outside suggests, you won’t have to worry about going hungry after a visit to Polli’s. Ko Best Resort Restaurant oth locals and tourists know, Ko rocks at The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui. Last year, the fabled Moorishstyle hotel in Wailea won 20 national and local awards, so it’s no wonder that its signature multi-milliondollar Ko rates as No. 1 in Maui’s hotel world as the Best Resort Restaurant. Meaning “sugarcane” in Hawaiian, Ko epitomizes the culinary history of Maui’s plantation era past. The menu is inspired by Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean, and Japanese immigrant dishes. Haole, too! Many are local family recipes, some from staff, passed down through the generations. But it’s the resort’s Executive Chef Tylun Pang who leads the team to fantastically update these treasured recipes. Indulge in ahi on the rock that you sear yourself on incredible stoneware and then dip into orange-ginger-miso sauce. Crunch Filipino spring rolls with refreshing greenpapaya achara; and Korean-style spicy chicken with sweet-Maui lavender honey. Pang gives these authentic recipes a farm-fresh contemporary twist, and he says that 90 percent of the produce is sourced from local farmers. For lovers of the grape, Ko features a winery of the month. Last month, it was Grgich Hills Estate of Napa Valley, and the restaurant payed tribute to 90-year-old founder, Mijenko “Mike” Grgich. September’s winery is Silver Oak. Chef Pang will prepare a three-course wine

The weekly Sunday Night Laulau experience offers you a healthy and modern take on a traditional Hawaiian dish. Wrapped in ti leaves, seafood includes fresh Maui catch, shrimp, scallops with spinach, mushrooms and baby bok choy, steamed, and served with jasmine rice. Come early — the laulau special is first come, first served — and it does sell out! You may also experience the romantic Twilight Din-
ner, artfully arranged in a private cabana adjacent to Ko on the Adult Pool Deck. The concierge will help you plan a four-course Ko menu. Popping the question? The cabana is the way to go. Are you a vegetarian? Have allergies? Fairmont’s Lifestyle Cuisine Plus offers numerous specialty menus in addition to the regular Ko menu. You’ll find gourmet options that are heart healthy, diabetic friendly, gluten-free, macrobiotic, raw and vegan. Ko proudly offers threecourse menus for each of these dietary needs. Ko’s bar opens at 11 a.m.; lunch is served from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m.; happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m.; and dinner from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The celebrated restaurant also won more awards than any other Maui establishment in this year’s contest. Besides Best Resort Restaurant, it won Best Appetizer, Best Plantation Cuisine, and Best Kama‘aina Special. Locals with valid Hawaii state IDs get 50 percent off food and 25 percent off drinks in the Ko lounge all day, every day. And, valet parking at the hotel is complimentary when dining there. TJ’s Warehouse Outlet Best Bento raveling off the beaten path sure has its perks, especially when it comes to dining on Maui. This is especially true for TJ’s Warehouse, whose unassuming location within Wailuku Industrial Park is easy to overlook. But that would be a mistake. Bento meals are a huge part of Hawaii’s culinary culture, and those in the know head to TJ’s Warehouse in Wailuku to get their fix of this lunchtime staple. From misoyaki butterfish to teriyaki beef, they serve all tastes locals crave. With prices starting at just under $6 for a chicken katsu or Korean chicken bento, you’ll even have cash left over for dessert.

Both Kihei and Kapalua are open nightly for dinner from 5:30 to 10 p.m., and late-night karaoke fun from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays, with Kihei also open late on Saturdays. You must be 21 and older to get in on latenight deals such as the 50 percent off sushi, appetizers, cocktails, and wine. An all-time sushi favorite is the mango crab salad hand roll packing a punch of flavor with mango, blue crab, fresh local greens and crunchy peanuts, wrapped in mamenori with a sweet Thai chili vinaigrette. Others include the Dragonfly Roll; the Butterfly Roll; and the panko-crusted fresh ahi sashimi wrapped with arugula and spinach, panko crusted and flash fried, served with a soy-wasabi butter sauce.
here’s pizza. Then there’s Flatbread Company pizza. Situated in the center of Paia town, this bustling hot spot is a magnet for pizza lovers and curious foodies. Its recipe for success is simple: source organic local ingredients, sprinkle them on 100-percent organic wheat dough, then bake it in a massive kiawe-fired pizza oven. The result is nothing short of divine. Creative combinations like the Mopsy’s kalua pork — featuring mango barbecue sauce, onions, pineapple, three kinds of cheese, tomatoes and herbs — will keep your taste buds happy. And as a bonus, they even offer a gluten-free crust option.

Foodland Best Food Market he late Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan opened Foodland in 1948 as Hawaii’s first modern supermarket. Today, the kama‘aina company employs 2,500 people at 32 Foodland, Sack N Save and Foodland Farms stores on four islands, and is Hawaii’s largest locally owned grocer. No wonder, it’s No. 1! Six Maui stores include Kahului, Pukalani, Kihei, Lahaina and Wailuku. Foodland Kehalani is scheduled to open in early 2014. All feature locallygrown items, prepared foods and island specialties such as poke. Programs include Maka‘i cards with loyalty discounts, Shop for Higher Education and Give Aloha, matching community donations. Sully’s groundbreaking philosophy continues to be preserved — “Treat your customers well and they will come back.”

fishing boat beckons at the entrance, telling you that this iconic 40-year-old restaurant right on the ocean in Kuau Cove is all about seafood. Once you bite into crispy mahimahi rolls, Kauai prawns and grilled octopus appetizers, it’s clear why it swims fathoms ahead of others, year after year, for a No. 1 Best Seafood win. Mama’s even has its own “fish guru,” and fish cutting room with loading dock, and it names fishers and their catch right on the menu. Do try, say, ono grilled in ti leaf with mango and coconut rice caught by Bobby Gomes on the North Shore. This year, Mama’s went the extra mile to subsidize a FAD, or deep-sea “fishing aggregate device,” so its fishers would have an easier time hooking up on the water.

awaiian culture — there’s nothing like it in the world,” says Dennis Preussler, general manager of ‘Ulalena at Maui Theatre. With that in mind, Preussler and the team at ‘Ulalena present a weekly stage show to share that culture with the world. More than just entertainment, this is a performance highlighting the story of Hawaii and its people. It just happens to take stage in mesmerizing fashion, complete with traditional hula, acrobatic displays and special effects. “It’s a combination of old ways and new ways being told in a very modern venue,” Preussler explains. The musical tells the creation story of the Hawaiian Islands, beginning with the Kumulipo (Hawaiian creation chant), through colonization and beyond. “We wanted to tell a true story, and we wanted to hold on to something real, and I think people get that,” Preussler notes.
“H
The show overflows from the stage, with dancers moving down the aisles and music emerging from unexpected corners, including one scene that transforms the theater into an underwater world filled with animated sea creatures. In another instance, performers on stilts depict a forest of living trees. During yet another highlight, the show takes on a Cirque-like turn, with a woman performing a mesmerizing aerial ballet 30 feet above the floor. Accolades have poured in since the show’s 1999 debut. Frommer’s guide book warns, “Don’t miss this!” While a review in The Boston Globe takes note of its, “dreamscape acrobatics and alluring spectacles.” Now in its 14th year, the show alters its presentation based on the talent available, while the story itself has remained the same, Preussler points out. Updates, including a recent $200,000 investment in new lighting, sound equipment and projections will surely
boost the theatrical experience. With or without the upgraded equipment, it seems ‘Ulalena is still as popular as ever, as demonstrated by the show’s Best of Maui win. “Every time people see it, they see something different, and I think that’s why it seems fresh after all this time,” says Preussler. “It’s like peeling an onion with many layers.” He also credits its success to the entire ‘Ulalena staff. “They are committed to this culture, and I think that really comes through. That’s a real reason for our staying power,” Preussler explains. In the end, the hope is that viewers — locals and visitors alike — will come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the culture of Hawaii. “We hope that they not only take away knowledge, but that they get inspired to learn even more about this amazing culture,” Preussler says.

They’re accustomed to the beaches or Haleakala, and I feel that makes us very unique,” says Pomai Weigert, marketing and community relations representative for Pi‘iholo Ranch. As a bonus, kids ages 8 to 12 ride free (per paying adult) on the nine-line canopy treetop course.
