WEDDINGS

Make a bold statement with your wedding cake rides and grooms may pore over every detail of their weddings, but few components of the festivities may be as fun, especially for foodies, as deciding what the wedding cake will look like. Such couples often express their creativity and personalities through statement wedding cakes. Many couples now eschew the classic three-tiered white cake in favor of a dessert that garners instant attention. Whether the cake is brightly colored or hand-painted, a towering architectural marvel or shimmering in metallics, couples are opting to make a statement with their confections. Apart from clever caketoppers, here are ways to stand out when dessert is served. ✦ According to the Perfect Wedding Guide, a rising trend in cakes is to cover a white or naked cake with translucent glaze tinted in the

B

couple’s wedding colors. This artistic expression can be especially stunning in bohochic weddings. ✦ Statement tiers also are popular. The cake may be traditional in nearly every way, but couples then set the cake apart by featuring an elaborate design or a different hue in one tier. ✦ Martha Stewart Weddings advises that more than just color can be used to make a statement. Lifelike sugar flowers can really set cakes apart. Guests may not be sure if they can consume all aspects of some cakes. But delicate sugar flowers taste as good as they look. ✦ Hand-painted tiles on a cake are another way to add panache. A bride and groom may be inspired by a European vacation or the stainedglass effects of religious windows and want to add that feel to the tiers of the cake.

✦ Sometimes a statement comes by way of texture. Even an all-white cake can be dressed up with interesting textural effects. Ruffles, lace, embossing and 3-D rosettes are different textural components that can be incorporated in cake designs. ✦ Couples also may want to tell their unique stories with cake. Individual tiers designed to reflect various milestone moments from the couple’s relationship can be quite engaging. ✦ Capitalizing on the trend of edgier weddings, couples may opt for darker hues on their cakes — even a black tier — or non-traditional geometric shapes to the cake itself or its design elements. Statement cakes can really say something about the couple getting married. Much like other wedding elements, cakes provide a window into the minds of happy couples.

rends may come and go, but flowers will always have a place at the wedding table. The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. According to Shel Cockett, who handles most of the wedding requests at Kahului Florist, white remains a prominent color for flowers, along with an increasing demand for blues and purples. Peonies, lilies and roses continue to be among the most popular blooms chosen for wedding bouquets and arrangements. “When we have brides from the Mainland, I often suggest a Hawaiian theme since they’re getting married on Maui, but many still want something more traditional,” she explains. However, Cora Camarillo, who owns Kihei-Wailea Flowers by Cora, says she sees more and more demand for tropical floral designs. “Visitors request tropical themes in either bright colors or pastels,” she explains, “while locals like the Boho style.” Both Cockett and Camarillo agree that a lot of brides are choosing to go with a more rustic, or Boho style, selecting clutch bouquets reflective of a relaxed “gypsy” vibe that are typically crafted with seeded eucalyptus instead of the traditional cascading versions. “With the stems showing, it’s a much more natural-looking bouquet,” Cockett says. Traditional maile and haku lei are often a mainstay in Maui weddings, especially as the ceremonies become more casual

in look and feel, observes Cockett. “Brides and grooms are bringing back these floral headpieces [haku lei] in grand fashion,” notes Carolee Higashino, founder and owner of White Orchid Wedding, a top-tier wedding and event company. “We like to make the bride’s lei with pikake flower when available or tuberose when pikake is hard to find,” Camarillo explains. Another trend surfacing for 2020 are floral designs and arches in a variety of geometric shapes, such as circles, squares and diamonds. “Rings of flowers with an abundance of florals are hot,” Higashino reveals. “Used as a ceremony alter, a selfie photoop station and other designations, you will likely see more of this throughout the year.” Additionally, Higashino observes that extra attention is being directed toward men’s florals as boutonnieres carry through details of the overall theme. As wedding trends seem to shift with the season, Cockett stays up to date by researching Pinterest. “That’s where a lot of brides like to post photos of their weddings, so that’s where I go,” she explains, adding with a laugh, “I finally gave in.” At Pukalani Floral, weddings contribute to a bulk of the business. Not only supplying floral decor, the Upcountry Top photo: Bouquets with protea as the main focus florist also offers wedding and event planning. Cakes don’t have to be white with white buttercream. In fact, couples can make things even more tasty by incorporating favorite flavor combinations into their cakes. For example, a chocolate and caramel filling reminiscent of a candy bar might be something to consider. Modern couples are embracing bold, unique and edgy components when planning their weddings. Putting an individualized spin on the ceremony and reception can make couples even more excited to tie the knot.

hen planning a destination wedding, be mindful of the guest experience as well as your own. From the minute your guests land or arrive, each and every one should be treated extra special. Remember, they are spending their hardearned dollars to honor you on your day, and they, too, should enjoy their own personal experience while celebrating. Here are a few ideas to make their experience a most pleasant one. ✦ Create a wedding website and a Facebook page just for your invited guests to mix and mingle online prior to your event. BLOOM OF LOVE continued from Page T3 detail in addition to fresh flowers set in a Hawaiian luxe style. Born and raised in the islands, Ocean Lehua holds an extensive background in design, event planning, photography, advertising and marketing, as well as access to a vast professional network. While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped freshen body odor. It wasn’t until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Weddings and events taking place on Maui provide ample opportunities for local businesses to augment their revenue stream. Camarillo works with wedding planners island-wide and has been known to provide flowers for multiple weddings at once. However, for the Kihei-based florist providing wedding flowers is not so much about the money as it is about enhancing a couple’s most memorable day. “One of the most satisfying aspects of weddings is when brides call while on their honeymoon to tell me how much they loved the flowers,” Camarillo admits. “I’ll put in extra flowers at my own cost to make it perfect.” Maui florists, it seems, have an inextinguishable passion Photo courtesy Pukalani Floral for making weddings bloom as brightly as possible; it’s the Tropical-themed bouquets fire that inspires their creative magic. remain popular in 2020.

A welcome reception is also a great way to start the celebration. Whether a formal cocktail soiree or a paddleboard beach day and BBQ, it is sure to be a hit and a fabulous opportunity to get everyone together for a meet-and-greet. âœŚ Provide transportation to and from your events. You don’t want a guest to be charting unknown territory and potentially getting lost, nor would you want those who imbibe to be on the road for any reason. âœŚ Do consider offering childcare options for those bringing little ones. Nannies are available to come on site for those who feel a bit skittish leaving their loved ones behind. Be sure they are all licensed, insured and recommended. âœŚ Finally, don’t plan too many group activities. Your guests will also want their alone time to adventure.
