You have been engaged, animated, in selecting your favorite restaurants, businesses and activities in our annual Best of Maui readers poll. For the past six weeks, we’ve accepted thousands of ballots, which you cast on both paper and electronically (just like in the primary and general elections). This supplement is the result of all of your decision making. Please peruse these pages to discover top picks for everything from the best sushi to the best frozen treat to the best health food. Find out all about what commercial activities your friends and neighbors enjoy, what they think the best cultural programs are, and what sports store/surf shop is the best place to pick up trendy rash guards and Tshirts. Take note that we dish up the original “Best of Maui” survey, established in 1992. This keeper of a guide features more than 40 different categories — from Best New Restaurant to Best Burger to Best Kamaaina Discount. It will remain posted at www.mauinews.com until next year’s edition, so you may have easy access to reference the winners anytime at your convenience. In addition, Best of Maui voters share thoughts about dining and other activities. Trudy Williams of Kula sums it up succinctly: “The greatest place in the world to live is Maui!” Marci Law of Kihei lamented about a previous award winner: “We want Stella Blues Cafe back!” Here is a sampling of some of the other responses: “Kula Botanical Garden — Best Heavenly spot on earth! You forget your troubles and glimpse a little bit of paradise,” writes Kathleen M. Holmes of Kula. “At last, delicious food at fair prices — Cafe O’Lei chain of restaurants,” pens Jackie Pias Carlin of Kihei. “Gotta love Da Kitchen for great local grinds and plenty of it. Totally violates the Miss Piggy guide to dining, which is, ‘Never eat more than you can lift,’ ” states Mary Ann Leigh of Lahaina. “Teralani Sailing Adventures was the most relaxing carefree we were on our honeymoon, and we were pretty carefree!” says Crystal Page of California. “Ko is an amazing restaurant, from the delicious food, the friendly wait staff, and the ambience is second to none. It’s worth the drive from any location on Maui,” says Brian Kanegai of Kihei. “If you like Italian, you’ll love Marco’s,” writes Jack Breen of Wailuku. “It’s the most consistently excellent food and great service on Maui.” “Even when times are tough, Marco’s, Sarento’s, Main Street Bistro, Sam Sato’s, Nick’s Fishmarket and Ruth’s Chris Steak House are always reliable, consistent and a good value,” says Richard Takase of Wailuku. “I could lose 20 pounds and sacrifice it all for one cream horn at Stillwell’s Bakery,” says Nicole Sadang of Wailuku.

Noelani Hessler of Paia won a gift card to Foodland and planned to use the practical prize on groceries. As far as grocery stores go, “Foodland’s a good one,” she said. Born and raised on Maui, Hessler said she participated in Best of Maui because she believes that it’s important for the truly best businesses to be recognized. “Everyone can have a reality of what is good and what needs to shine,” she said. Francine Andrion of Kahana said she feels “grateful and blessed” to win a gift certificate to Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea. “I feel really special

because I never hardly win anything,” she said. Andrion plans to use the gift toward a getaway trip or for some fine dining at one of the resort’s restaurants. Malia King of Wailuku was excited to win a gift card to Marco’s Grill & Deli, calling it a good reason to visit the restaurant again. “I love pasta, I love Italian food,” she said. As an employee of TriStar Restaurant Group, King said she participates in the Best of Maui contest each year along with her coworkers.

Chris Tam, who recently moved from Kihei to North Carolina, said he likes to participate in Best of Maui because he wants to support his favorite stores. He listed Spago, Maui Dream Divers and Star Noodle among some of his top picks. Tam won a gift card to Genki Sushi and plans to treat his parents to a sushi dinner.

Dining Best New Restaurant

Ka‘ana Kitchen rom the moment you walk down the wooden, spiral staircase and in the door, you enter a forward-thinking restaurant world. For starters, Ka‘ana Kitchen emulates a gourmet kitchen and dining room of someone’s elegant estate as it overlooks cascading pools at Andaz Maui. Meander in, and bartenders wearing Tory Richards shirts will greet you with fun mixology cocktails. Don’t imbibe? Then try a “mocktail” with freshly squeezed tropical juices. Nearby, chefs make fun tastes at exhibition counters, and you may sip and watch. “It’s a very contemporary vibe,” says the resort’s Executive Chef Brent Martin. “Basically, it’s like our house. You can walk around with a glass of wine, chat with the chefs. This is the most nonhotel restaurant in Maui, ever. Maybe even in all of Hawaii.” How different? Every two weeks, the dinner menu is divided into five rotating categories, or themes, with four dishes created from each of the columns, including recently added vegetarian selections. “The themes can be a farm, a farmer, a fisherman, the best produce we can find,” says Ka‘ana Kitchen’s Chef de Cuisine Isaac Bancaco. “They rotate and include Wicked Tuna, Surfing Goat Dairy, Kona Cold Lobsters, Kula Country Farms and Butchers Block.” From the Surfing Goat Dairy column, you may savor watermelon salad with fe-

“If I could design the perfect job, this would be it,” says Chef de Cuisine Isaac Bancaco. “I don’t even want to call it a job. The level of support from above in management and from below by my cooks is unprecedented on Maui. It’s forward thinking. I have no restrictions.” Below, interactive stations beckon for you to watch and ask questions. ta, horseradish, arugula and candied walnuts; and grilled octopus with secret Sicily watercress and asparagus. recipe that has become a favorite among local residents is the avocado poke, a mix of ahi, avocado, onion, and soy and chili sauces. Other poke dishes feature tako, crab and shrimp. Try a poke bowl, with freshly made poke over steamed white rice.

It’s out of this world. Meat lovers will want to sink teeth into the rib-eye with Thai basil and green papaya salad with chili, lime and peanuts in the Butcher’s Block. “Our clients have very refined palates. They expect quality. The most refreshing part is, they are willing to trust us,” says Bancaco. “Eighty five perfect of our produce is local. The whole idea is that farmers dictate to us what is available, rather than us dictating to them.” For breakfast, “everything is ala minute,” explains Martin. “Nothing is sitting in hot boxes. All of our fruits are carved to order; we showcase farms such as Ono organics in Kipahulu. Chefs cut and peel and talk to guests.” All juices are freshly squeezed, and all byproducts are dried and used in the hotel’s spa products. A custom-made food hydrator puts other food waste into compost for Andaz’s Ka‘ana Farm on Naalae Road in Kula. No big, corporate wineries are represented, only boutique producers, such as Fred Scherrer and Gary Burke. It’s all forward thinking and excitingly different. Do try it.

While the entire menu offers mouthwatering options, the restaurant owned by world-class chef Bev Gannon boasts an appetizer list that has been named this year’s top choice. Sample Bev’s famous crab pizza, kalua-pork sliders or Asian-pear duck tostada. say, a Scorpion, originated in 1948 by Don The Beachcomber. Or bring in a special bottle of wine and let them uncork it for you. Listen to the well-detailed verbal take on the day’s dishes as you sip and savor. “Mama’s menu is printed daily as it rotates daily and everything is special,” says Executive Chef Perry Bateman. “We use the highest-quality ingredients with the help and support of our fishermen, growers and ranchers. Buy local, get fresh, makes the best.” Owners and founders Floyd and Doris Christenson have always believed in a farm-to-table experience since they opened more than 40 years ago. “They did it before it was a concept. It’s sustainability at its finest,” the veteran chef continues. At least six varieties of fresh Hawaiian fish are featured. These days, the same enticing menu is offered from lunch through dinner.

The Maui News / CARLA TRACY photo

Wild Molokai venison sliders on fresh-baked Maui onion buns are all the rage. “By having our own fish processing facility, we are able to utilize the whole fish,” says Bateman. “Of course, we have prime fillets and

sashimi of numerous species every day, but stocks made from the rest of the fish add flavor to our sauces and soups.” Fishers bring their catch right up to the loading dock at the Fish Room, after they hook up at one of two deepsea buoys sponsored by Mama’s. “Ono is in really good supply this summer, and we’re serving it seared so it stays really moist,” says Bateman. “There’s no ban on bottomfish, and they are running right now. We’re the only restaurant to have those plump and juicy clams and shrimp from Kauai. We have Big Island wild boar, Molokai sea salt and sweet potatoes, Oahu asparagus and ginger and fish from Lanai. So diners get a taste of all of the islands, not just Maui.” Bottom fish are pan-seared with Kauai clams, Haiku Farms cherry tomatoes, Waipoli watercress and taro leaf pasta. Wild Molokai venison is served in sliders made of fresh-made Maui onion buns.

“We have squid luau with local octopus from Maui waters and we have fresh-made poi, too. We make poi everyday. Two or more spoons of poi a day, keeps the doctor away,” says Bateman. As icing on the cake, Pastry Chef Lezley Jacintho and her crew will entice you with their famous Tahitian Black Pearl dessert and more. Remember that because Mama’s is a huge success story, it continues to become increasingly popular, so reservations are recommended — even for lunch. “People always ask, ‘How do you do such a large volume and keep your quality so high?’ ” says Karen Christenson, executive vice president and daughter of Floyd and Doris. “I say, ‘It’s the team.’ We’re a tight-knit ohana. We live it, love it, breathe it. Everyone comes together. It’s a family and we’re very proud of our efforts.”

Dining Best Frozen Treat

Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice ith dozens of flavors to choose from, Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice makes it easier — a little — to make your pick when it’s your turn at the counter. The favorite frozen treat shop narrows it down by recommending some select combinations. Try the Hawaiian Rainbow (strawberry, pineapple and vanilla), or the Citrus Squeeze (pink lemonade, lemon and lime). Started up years ago by Ululani Yamashiro in the Pacific Northwest, the business now features multiple locations on Maui. “It wasn’t until we got to Maui that our business evolved to what it is today,” says David Yamashiro, Ululani’s husband. Now the pair and their partners are poised to open shops throughout Hawaii and return to the Mainland, but Yamashiro says Maui will always be considered home base.

Dining Best Chef

Michael Lofaro hose who have dined at Grand Wailea’s floating island Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a will most certainly remember the off-the-charts food cooked by Chef de Cuisine Michael Lofaro. That’s why he’s risen like cream to the top to be this year’s Best Chef on Maui. Of course, he presents it in a venue most can only dream about — and that’s why Humu (as it’s affectionately called by staff), has been named the Best Resort Restaurant on Maui this year. A recipe for success, for sure. It takes a special chef to live up to Humu’s fantasyland venue, and Lofaro fills the bill. A protege of celebrity chef Michael Mina of Aqua fame, Lofaro took time off to be with his family of five and to build outrigger canoes awhile back. But because he’s an artiste of such high caliber, his creativity has remained intact, and in fact, flourished, since his return. “Wow, I’m honored. Thank you to everyone that felt that way to vote for me,” says Lofaro. “Thank you to my crew at Humu who make it happen nightly and especially to Executive Chef Eric Faivre for his faith in me and my creative process.” His simply balanced flavors highlight farm-fresh produce such as the lau‘ai salad made with hydroponically grown Kula butter lettuce, Cabot white cheddar cheese, Kumu Farms strawberry papayas and candied macadamia nuts, tossed in a light whole grain mustard vinaigrette. Proceeds from the salad support Maui farmers, and that is a sustainable story worth tasting. Chef Lofaro’s tight-knit relationships with Maui growers are evident on each and every plate. He meets with farmers year-round for the best picks, such as Waipoli watercress and Surfing Goat Dairy cheeses, bursting with flavors on his light and refreshing menu. The pupu menu highlight is the raw bar, where you can dive into fresh kampachi poke with cilantro, avocado

Chef de Cuisine Michael Lofaro of Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a at Grand Wailea is king of Maui’s kitchens and smoked ponzu; and Hawaiian ahi tartare with perilla leaf, soft herbs, green onion and toasted cumin. Like your food cooked? Then sink your teeth into cilantro and lemongrass baby-back ribs; and savor Big Island abalone chowder. Tempting hot entrees include seared ahi loin with foie gras dumpling, stir-fry mushrooms and snow peas in a Vietnamese pho inspired broth; crispy Hawaiian snapper with coconut fried rice, toasted almond and Thai American sauce. Or catch your own lobster right from the restaurant’s saltwater lagoon, and he’ll steam or grill it for you. There are plenty of options from the land on the menu as well, such as brioche-and-lemongrass-crusted rack

of domestic lamb served with Asian ratatouille, black-bean sauce and asparagus; and the “all natural” filet mignon is from the U.S. family-owned Niman Ranch, raised traditionally, hu-

manely and sustainably. A favorite restaurant for generations of families, Humu is considered casual enough for nightly dining and special enough for celebrations.

We insist on making sure your $52 fish entree is put at the right place on the table and that all other bells and whistles are covered.” Manager Dave Baker spearheads the interviews. And then all of the other managers train the staff, which tops more than 300 people. “It’s the most satisfying thing to see the polish and the attention to dress and jewelry evolve,” continues Christenson. “They smile under pressure. Once you are seated, the servers entice with verbal descriptions of a large selection of dishes as the menu rotates daily. Komoda Store & Bakery isit Komoda Store & Bakery near closing time and you’ll be sorely disappointed. Maui residents — and plenty of visitors from afar — know that the early bird gets the fresh cream puff. For decades, this Makawao business has served a steady supply of pies, stick doughnuts and more, and that legacy has continued as new generations of the Komoda family have stepped in over the years. General manager and baker Calvin Shibuya said he dedicates this year’s Best Bakery win to Ikuo Komoda and wife Leatrice, the “stalwart” pair he credits for making the bakery what it is today. Shibuya also thanks his loyal customers, as well as Hali‘imaile General Store and Rock & Brews, local restaurants that use Komoda’s famous buns.

No problem. They’ll pack it in your Star Noodle eco bag that will remind you to return for Singapore noodles and comforting udon. Dining Best Food Truck

Starstruck he owners of Star Noodle initially bought the shiny, red Starstruck food truck to take their famous food on the road. But the truck got “stuck” outside as a backup for eager Star Noodle diners waiting in line or wanting to do take away. A picnic table with condiments and an umbrella for shade are nearby stationary conveniences. But the menu is on a roll, rotating weekly. It’s categorized into share boats, such as crunchy tempura shrimp tacos with creamy garlicchipotle slaw and pico de gallo; noodles loaded with garlic and chicken; fresh housemade juices; and desserts of the day, such as green-tea ice cream sandwiched into giant almond cookies.

Ruby’s Diner eiki can’t resist bright-red booths, juicy kid-sized hamburgers and, of course, the shakes and malts at Ruby’s Diner at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center. The restaurant portrays the nostalgia and innocence of the 1940s with its fun decor, great food and friendly staff, the perfect place to bring the family. The kid’s menu features a variety of balanced meals that parents and kids love, and the ice cream cone at the end is sure to please. For a healthier choice, kids can opt for a fresh fruit cup or sliced apples in place of the shoestring fries. Model planes displayed around the restaurant, coloring activities and toys for kids to play with while they wait for their meals all help make this diner the most kid friendly.

Mama’s Fish House t’s the third straight year with no ban on bottomfish. That means prized pelagics, such as opakapaka and onaga, will lure you in hook, line and fresh catch. Boaters pull right up to the Fish Room’s loading dock, manned by Fish Guru Mike Pascher, after they catch ’em at one of two FADs (fishing aggregate devices) in the deep blue, sponsored by Mama’s. There’s nothing imported here, except lobster tails from remote Tristin Island. Executive Chef Perry Bateman says that wild ahi are running off of Hana this summer, and that mahimahi are really hot right now. “We encourage everyone to try the more unusual portions like cheeks, or ‘kama,’ of deep-dwelling snappers or even rich ahi belly, sure to amaze. We also feature squid luau with local octopus and fresh Kauai clams with kalo leaf pasta.”

Humuhumunukunukuaet on stilts in an oceanfront saltwater lagoon, Grand Wailea’s Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a looks like a floating island. Cross the bridge past waterfalls and splashing fish into open-air thatched areas, resplendent with ohia and koa woods. It’s as romantic as Maui gets. In fact, Islands magazine has named it “Best Table for Two” and “Most Romantic Table.” But even with all of the ambience, it’s really Chef de Cuisine Michael Lofaro’s menu that steals the show. Named “Best Chef on Maui” this year, Lofaro is a protege of Michael Mina of Aqua fame. Each dish is a superstar in taste and presentation — from kampachi poke to lemongrass-scented baby back ribs.

Mana Foods rivately owned with the best pricing around, this iconic Paia store is jam-packed with colorful and fresh Maui produce, vitamins, a wall of chocolate, grass-fed meats and organic eggs. “We just installed a whole new deli section, added solar panels and are expanding the store by 400 feet,” says partner Theresa Thielk, whose brother, Edward Thielk, founded the business. The new deli allows you to self serve four different soups from spicy coconut to Thai tofu; dozens of salads such as rainbow quinoa; five or six pizzas; wild-caught salmon; and gluten-free desserts such as lilikoi-gingerbread cake. Everything is organic, if possible. “The reason Edward started Mana Foods was to provide great quality food at reasonable prices,” says Theresa. “It makes my heart glad that we still do this today. Maui Arts & Cultural Center he Maui Arts & Cultural Center is an all-encompassing haven for the creative spirit. From theater productions and legendary musical guest performances, to diverse art exhibits and educational programs, the MACC offers a wealth of opportunity for the island. This year, the nonprofit organization celebrates 20 years of serving as a worldclass facility that draws artists and performers from not only the state but from around the world. “The range of cultural programs at the MACC are vast and extensive, with varied programs that encompass both the visual arts and the performing arts as well as contemporary and traditional art forms,” says Art Vento, MACC president and CEO. “The cultural programs feature the best of Maui and the best of Hawaii, as well as the best in international talent.” Hokulani In particular, through Holt the work of Cultural Programs Director Hokulani Holt, local residents and visitors alike can experience the rich history and continued influence of Hawaiian culture. Holt, a master kumu hula with deep connections to local Hawaiian education, says the MACC uses a wide variety of artistic forms to showcase Hawaiian culture, including spoken word, contemporary music, traditional storytelling, dance performances, competitions, films and more. “My main goal is to bring quality experiences that will enlighten, inspire, bring joy and increase understanding of particularly Hawaii culture, and primarily Hawaiian culture,” says Holt. “These presentations are intended to showcase the depth and breadth of a culture.” Signature events include Ku Mai Ka Hula Competition, three days of hula presentations starting Sept. 11. The ninth annual event will feature halau from Hawaii and the Mainland who will perform in solo and group competitions. The event

Some 27,000 visitors from near and far came to the gallery during the 201314 season, says Neida Bangerter, gallery director. “Schaefer International Gallery has a

view of international artists, cultural and historical exhibits along with educational opportunities for students. We fulfill a need for inspiration that touches the soul.”

Heritage Film Festival, which focuses on themes and issues specific to Hawaii. “These events highlight the contemporary creativity of Hawaii today,” says Holt. “From hula to fashion to films, these are some of the many ways that Hawaiian culture is celebrated here at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.” The MACC’s influence on Maui is apparent, with the organization winning not only Best Cultural Program, but also with

the Schaefer International Art Gallery winning Best Art Gallery. The MACC’s reach also penetrates the local education system. The organization’s educational arm holds workshops and other events aimed at encouraging arts education in island schools, as well as offering field trip opportunities for students.
