Pain in paradise: Is Bowenwork the answer?
o many islanders stay active and live longer here in paradise, and what better way to enjoy it than feeling your best. Unfortunately, many of us suffer with pain, limited mobility in the shoulders or arms and some even from concussions without finding long-term solutions. Athletes, paddlers, surfers, post-surgical patients and seniors find these three issues all too common. Bowenwork addresses these specific issues:

Q: What are some of the common issues people here on Maui come to you for treatment? Bowenwork treats everything from your head to your toes; however frequently seen are canoe paddlers, surfers, seniors and post-surgical clients who have become unable to move their shoulders or arms freely and/or they are experiencing pain. The majority of them have exhausted other forms of treatment without resolution and have found Bowenwork to be an effective and lasting treatment option for them. In Hawaii we have the most active seniors in the United States. Many are unable to lift their arms and freely get around due to chronic postural problems, old injuries, surgery or illness. Until now, they have just quietly lived
with the situation and given up activities that make them happy. Bowenwork offers an alternative and will reduce pain, increase the range of motion in the shoulder and arm and get all of these individuals back to the activities they enjoy.
Q: With all the recent attention on theWorld Cup, one story told too often once the final match was over was of the athletes suffering from concussions and their daily struggle to cope with the debilitating symptoms and their lack of recovery. How can Bowenwork address this specific problem? There are procedures in Bowenwork that can quickly and effectively address the symptoms of concussion and post-concussion syndrome. There are dozens of symptoms involved with this injury. Headaches, impaired vision, vomiting, confusion, disorientation, loss of balance, concentration difficulties and sleep disorders, just to name a few. The sooner someone comes in for a treatment after sustaining a concussion, the quicker the healing process is initiated and the symptoms can potentially be mitigated before they begin. For those who have been suffering or coping with the symptoms for a long time, it will ad-
Q: How does it work, what is a session like? The muscles and connective tissue (tendons, ligaments and fascia) contain specialized cells that communicate with our central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). They send information about the length of our muscles and the tone or tension in the tendons, ligaments and joints. The gentle, hands-on Bowenwork procedures use these mechanisms to normalize tension levels and create balance in the length of the muscles. It is done through light clothing and usually takes about an hour. Clients usually report feeling results within the first day or two of their treatment. Often large changes happen within three to five days. Typically, at Bowenwork Maui, clients are seen two to four times depending on the problem. Chronic situations or longstanding issues can require more visits. ■ Jennifer Carey is a Bowen therapist and the owner of Bowenwork Maui. Double mastectomy does not boost survival for most — study
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
CHICAGO (AP) — Removing both breasts to treat cancer affecting only one side doesn’t boost survival chances for most women, compared with surgery that removes just the tumor, a large study suggests. The results raise concerns about riskier, potentially unnecessary operations that increasing numbers of women are choosing. The study involved nearly 200,000 California women treated for cancer in one breast and followed for several years afterward. Ten-year survival rates were nearly identical — roughly 82 percent — for women who had lumpectomies to remove the tumor plus radiation, and for those who had double mastectomies. Women who had a single mastectomy, removal of just the cancerous breast, fared slightly worse. The results confirm what many doctors have suspected, said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. “There’s no guarantee that by having the second breast removed that you will do better,” said Lichtenfeld, who had no role in the research. In the study, just over half the women had lumpectomy treatment. But the number who had double mastectomies increased substantially to 12 percent between 1998 and

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. One in eight women will be diagnosed in their lifetime, and the key to recovery is early detection. In fact, when breast cancer is detected at an early, or localized, stage, the 5-year survival rate is 98 percent. For more information, visit www.nationalbreast cancer.org.

Know Your Normal
There is no “standard” breast size, shape or feel. Each person is unique. So, it’s important to become familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel. Knowing what is normal for you may help you see or feel changes in your breasts. If you notice any change from your normal, or have any of the symptoms described below, see your health care provider. Although it may be nothing to worry about, you will have the peace of mind that it has been checked.

When we are younger, we want to wear sunscreen, use topical antioxidants and be mindful of inflammatory/cystic acne, which can result in scarring. As we get older, sun protection is still important, but even with the best of sun protection, we will continue to show signs of aging. As we get older, we lose volume in our face. This loss of volume starts in our mid to late 20s and, depending on facial bone structure and physical activity/nutrition etc., the volume loss becomes more apparent over time as wrinkles and heaviness in the lower face.
uation and desired outcome. I look at the face in a three-dimensional approach and consider not just what is visible on the surface, but what is going on under the skin. There are multiple categories of treatments that patients may benefit from. These categories include topical products to help the surface of the skin, fillers such as Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane, Voluma, Sculptra and Artefill to fill in fine lines, facial hollows or to re-contour the face, neuromodulators such as Botox to relax action lines (wrinkles), light/laser/RF/mechanical devices to treat skin texture, pigmentation, blood vessels and skin laxity and lastly surgery. We find that many of our patients will benefit from various treatments and products, and it is during the consultation that we assess and make a personalized recommendation. And it is via repeat evaluations that we augment our treatments to address the fact that we are always changing.
First and foremost, we know that the most important reason to care for your skin is to prevent skin cancers that can result in preventable skin cancer surgeries, scarring and even death. The second reason to take care of your skin is that we all want to look our best, and caring for your skin is a great way to do Q: How do women that. Brian Stolley, M.D. We do see that regular maintenance of our skin is beneficial to both our skin’s health and beauty. This starts at home with a good skin care regiment. And of course, sunscreen. In addition, most patients benefit from topical antioxidants, a retinoid such as Retinol or Tretinoin, and often skin growth factor products. There are other specialty products to consider as well. In terms of office treatments, there are several that, when done over time, will result in a slowing of the appearance of aging. These include the Venus skin firming facial, which improves texture and skin tone, IPL (intense pulse light), also known as a photo-facial, 1540 laser treatment which is a fractional non-ablative laser that can be used at various settings for a number of conditions from melasma to fractional non-ablative resurfacing. Microneedling is a great treatment to be done periodically, and of course BOTOX and fillers have great results that are best maintained over time. Alone, these treatments can take years off your appearance. See Q&A on Page 6

the end of her life by 1980, she had initiated 22 masters to carry on this precious gift of healing. Mrs. Takata was contracted to teach Reiki at the University of Hawaii on the island of Oahu and had Reiki Energy Medicine approved in the mid-’70s by the American Hawayo Takata Medical Association to be practiced in Hawaii hospitals. Until 1992, Reiki in the West was practiced the way it was entrusted, and then changes began to happen to the sacred healing art and derivatives of the practice were popping up like wildfire. People were being called to the level of the practice they could relate to while others were confused by the differences.
By SHALANDRA ABBEY Reiki master, author n October 1936, a great gift was given to the people of Hawaii. A tiny Japanese lady by the name of Hawayo Takata, who was born in a sugarcane camp in Hanamaulu, Kauai, had gone to her ancestral home in Japan for surgery. Instead of having surgery, she was healed by Reiki natural healing. After many months of proving herself worthy, she was entrusted to bring this gift to the Western world. At 4-foot, 7-inches tall and weighing 97 pounds, this petite lady would stand before her classes and firmly explain, “Reiki means Universal Life Energy, and we are all composed of this energy. Everyone can use this energy for healing, and I will teach you how!” As late as 1970, she was the only Reiki master teaching in the Western world. Recognizing that she was coming to

In 1990, when I finally conjured up the courage to leave the IBM Corporation and move to Kauai to live the life of a full-time Reiki master, it had been 10 years since Mrs. Takata had made her transition. Reiki wasn’t discussed openly very much on Kauai. I had to make a conscious effort to connect with this energy from the past. As my Reiki practice grew, clients, students and people I had never met started to call and wanted to share stories of the lady who brought this form of natural healing to the West. It was fun to sit and “talk story” with some of the old-timers about Hawayo Takata and her Reiki practice. I’ll never forget one man who excitedly explained, “She was a real go-get-um lady, one of the first women to drive an automobile on Kauai.” Looking back, I have to chuckle as I remember myself as the type “A” ex-IBMer with white skin, blue eyes and blond hair, attempting to “refine her energy” and learn humility. I was craving to know about Reiki’s history in the islands, all the while introducing a method of natural healing to a tremendously multi-cultured, laid back, island society. Talk about initiations! Many more were coming in to me than what I was giving out. These kinds of life initiations are happening to this day and will never end… Reiki continues to be my teacher in this classroom of life.
2011. The trend was most notable in women younger than 40, climbing from just 4 percent to 33 percent. Other research suggests that removing both breasts to treat one-sided cancer may improve survival chances for the relatively small number of women who have genetic breast cancer or strong family histories of the disease, said study co-author Scarlett Gomez, a research scientist with the Cancer Prevention Institute of California. But most breast cancer patients have neither of those risks. The medical community is paying increasing attention to overtreatment and excessive costs, and the study results raise questions about reasons for rising use of an expensive, potentially risky treatment “of dubious effectiveness,” the researchers said. Patients’ preferences and fear that cancer will return play a role, but that fear “usually exceeds estimated risk,” the study said. Reasons why survival was slightly worse for women who had just one breast removed are uncertain, although this treatment is more common among Hispanic and black women and those with lower incomes and public insurance than among wealthy whites. The study was published last month in the Journal of the American Medical Association. A journal editorial notes that the study echoes previous research and adds to a debate about the rising prevalence of double mastectomies. The study authors examined data from the California Cancer Registry, part of a national cancer surveillance program.
When done in combination, these treatments work synergistically for even more dramatic effects.
■ After 16 years practicing Reiki on Kauai, Shalandra Abbey moved to Maui Meadows in 2006. For more information, visit ReikiHawaii.com or call Abbey at 280-7704.
Q: What treatments will have the most impact?
I feel that the treatments that have the most impact are those that the patient can see the results the fastest. It is human nature to want to see results ASAP. So, we find that facial contouring with specific fillers properly placed is a very popular and rewarding procedure. In this treatment, fillers are used to give volume back to the upper face and lift the lower face. That is, it re-establishes the Triangle of Youth. As mentioned earlier, this volume loss actually starts in our mid to late 20s and early 30s, so the age at which we start to replace this volume is up to the patient. Botox has a very high satisfaction rate, as it relaxes away frown lines, squint lines, forehead lines and others. Botox, when used cosmetically, has even been shown to have a significant anti-depressive effect in one study. There are also treatment options available that can tighten the skin of the lower face. These include Ultherapy, which uses focused ultrasound waves to create heat deep in the tissue and thus tightening, and also the ThermiRF in which a probe is passed under the skin via a small needle poke. These treatments offer the ability to tighten the skin of the lower face without cutting. When they are combined with replacing volume in the upper face, the results are amplified, removing years from ones appearance.

he American Heart Association this year is marking the 10th anniversary of its Go Red for Women movement, which aims to spread awareness about heart disease and put an end to its reign as the leading cause of death in women. Go Red for Women, which was created after the American Heart Association discovered that heart disease kills more women than men, is a network of women working toward three goals: education, support and research. The past 10 years have seen a number of breakthroughs in raising awareness and saving lives. For example, 34 percent fewer women now die from heart disease, advocacy efforts have led to more funding for screenings for low-income women and more doctors now recognize that women’s heart symptoms and treatment are different from men’s. Even though heart disease continues to take the lives of 1 in 3 women, Kauwela Bisquera, regional director for the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association in Hawaii, points to such accomplishments as cause for hope. The efforts over the past decade will be lauded at next month’s Go Red for Women luncheon at the Fairmont Kea Lani Resort in Wailea, where women from around Hawaii will gather for a health expo, fashion show, threecourse exclusive luncheon menu and much more. “This is a big year for us,” Bisquera said. “Our luncheon is going to be more of a celebration event of 10 years
