Each of us has a distinct path and identity, which only we can fulfill. The compass of our soul lights our way. As we discipline ourselves to go within – beyond the surface chatter of the mind, the changing emotions, and the changing circumstances of our lives – we connect with our inner compass that directs us towards divine right action based on our soul’s course. Our souls are always calling on us to be our best selves. Over time, as the circumstances of our lives change, the essential part of our nature always remains. This is our “pure self”; it is unlimited. It is unaffected by how much money we make, who we know or how much we know. Discovering this indispensable aspect of our being is key to finding peace in our changing lives. A Google search turns up the following definition of “self”: “A person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action.” “Essential” is defined as: “Absolutely necessary; extremely important.” So if we want to know ourselves, we must continue to contact this deeper aspect of our essential nature. How do we discover who we are beyond the accepted external language we use to define ourselves? It can be scary to step outside of the ego’s striving and tap in to the unknown and shapeless realms of the spirit.I have a friend who is 75 and beginning to feel frightened about the end of his life. He is in excellent health, eats well, exercises and has a full social life. He adores his beloved wife. He owns his home and has retired from a successful career. And he is terrified about getting older and perhaps suffering from dementia or some debilitating illness. With all of his worldly success, he has not yet tapped in to the key nature of his true self – the soul. When he does, he will lose his fear of death because he will know that who he truly is exists beyond the earthly roles he plays, and even beyond death. In the course of a lifetime, we reinvent ourselves many times. However, none of our various identities can match the vastness of our spirit self – our soul. Our consciousness is limited by time and space in this third dimensional reality, unless we endeavor to see beyond the illusion of form and into the infinite. How do we shift our perspective beyond the tiny lens of our third dimensional self? The answer lies within. This inner journey may not be as exciting as a trip to Rome or winning the lottery, but, ultimately, the greatest wealth we discover is in the interior of ourWhensoul. we learn to listen deeply to our intuition, we tap in to the higher self and discover a guiding purpose to our life. This awareness of an invisible, benevolent source can be revealed in a moment of spiritual awakening, or through a steady practice of inner listening or mindfulness. I struggle with sometimes feeling that I don’t play very well, but I just keep going to class knowing that eventually I will be able to play well enough to accompany my friends. In this process of reinventing yourself, take time each day to sit and meditate. It will bring you to your core, and you will find greater calmness, efficiency and success in your life. By Sahara Sun I desperately wanted to connect to my mother’s soul one more time before she departed this world. As she took her last breath, I was astonished to see that sparkling soul light in her big blue eyes disappear into a dark, lifeless void. The painful reality of death leaves the living seemingly buried in our own darkened void of stillness, as if a seed asleep beneath the wintery earth. In my own process of healing and grieving, I am turning to the guidance of our great Earth Mother who holds the key to moving through loss and change. The pause of winter is essential after a growing season or after any major life shift – such as a death, change of job, or relationship. Without taking time to reflect on these types of seasonal deaths, our own light can dim and become sequestered into unreachable places. Like a seed readying itself to burst forth, we need time to rebuild our light within while patiently trusting that a wintery, restorative, healing pause will eventually bring new life. As I observed my mother’s own growing season coming to an end, I have allowed myself to slip into a wintery dormancy readying for change. I have faith that like a fallen tree in the forest, new growth will fill the void in my heart. I trust that the seeds in me that are planted with intention, will sprout in accordance with the earth’s cycles. In the meantime, I am embracing the mana and Aloha spirit that has enveloped these islands in the stillness of winter.

On Friday, November 18, the federal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued its ruling on the GMO Moratori um law passed by Maui County voters in November 2014. The court invalidated the law, stating “By banning com mercialized GE plants, the ordinance impermissibly in trudes into the area of exclusive state regulation and thus is beyond the county’s authority.” In making the ruling, the court acknowledged GE practices: • cause widespread economic impacts on convention al farmers • that GE experiments and the plethora of pesticides they use raise environmental concerns regarding harm to animals and plants. While SHAKA is disappointed in the ruling and be lieves the three judges misinterpreted Hawaii law, the rul ing clarifies that only the state has the authority to protect our environment and our health. Along with food activists across the state, we must now insist that Governor Ige and our legislators demand the DOA and DOH: • Test our soils, air and water regularly and publish the results; • Conduct health tests to determine public health im pacts; and • Take action to protect our air, water and soil.

By appealing the ruling at the local level, SHAKA and its at torneys were able to play a major role in allowing other communities to protect themselves from the reckless seed industry practices. Of great significance to state and local communities across the country, the Ninth Circuit ruled that federal law does not prohibit states and counties from passing local laws to regulate and ban commercially grown crops. By Heather Salmon Solstices and equinoxes mark the times of transition for our sun. The winter, or Yule solstice, marks the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. Of all the eight holy days on the great Wheel of the Year, the winter solstice is the most powerful time of regeneration. The ancients knew this and built archaeological monuments and temples that created direct alignments with the rising sun on this day. Most famous are Stonehenge (England), Karnak temple (Egypt), and the Mayan walled city of Tulum (Mexico) to name a few. Special rituals were held and people gathered from far and wide to partake in the blessings of this sacred communion time with nature. Actually, seven days make up the sacred time of regeneration around the winter solstice. It begins three days before and concludes three days after the day of the solstice. The three days prior, during which time the light is diminishing, is a powerful time to go within, examine our shadow sides, and offer up those things we are ready to heal or transform through release rituals. During the three days following solstice, the sun is actually traveling along the elliptic part of its orbit and appears to be standing still. On the third day, also known as Christmas (the Greek word “christos” means the anointed one), the light begins to noticeably grow again. This was known as a time of magic and resetting; a time to receive vision and inspiration in the shamanistic traditions of Nordic communities. This is still a wonderful time to reinvent ourselves, to open to receive guidance and inspiration as we reset, and to dream into being all that we are called to create in the next solar cycle.

Have you tried everything – perhaps even surgery and prescription drugs – but the pain still has not gone away? The Rolf Method of Structural Integration is a holistic system of bodywork and movement education that has remarkable results in reducing or eliminating chronic pain. It reorganizes connective tissue (fascia), the stuff that holds everything (bones, muscles, organs) in place and gives us our shape. Due to physical injury, emotional trauma or inefficient patterns of movement, adhesions can form in the body’s fascia; this can result in pain and limiting range of motion. Rolfing aligns and balances the body by lengthening and repositioning the fascia. As fascia is lengthened, it allows the body to move more efficiently and with less pain. As a practitioner, I use my hands, fingers and elbows to work the entire fascial system in a systematic way to release tightly-held connective tissue. I take into consideration which area and layer to work with that will allow the next layer and area to open up without the previous one going back, providing expansive and sustainable results. Each session includes an evaluation while standing and walking. Then we move to table work, where you may be asked to slowly move an elbow or knee or turn your head while I apply pressure and hold tissue where it belongs. My darling princess was gifted to me in 2005, instantly becoming my guardian angel connecting me to God, Earth, Universe, Life. And I would have completely blocked this miracle had I told myself to be closed and stay “in control.” In her last months I watched her, talked with her, cared for her, loved her, prayed for her. Then my dear Lord sat me down and confronted me: “She’s hurting, dear. She doesn’t have a quality of life right now. You know this.” In fact, I did know it. I just didn’t want to. My baby looked up at me just then, and through her eyes I heard: “When you truly love someone, let them go.” Tears slowly rolled down my cheek as she continued to look straight up at me. “Mom, I love you,” I knew her spirit was saying to mine. “It’s okay to let me go now. We have had such a wonderful life together; thank you!”
Looking back now I still find the tears flowing. I sometimes wish for her to show up at my door. Though I experience hurt, locking my heart’s door is not an option. I don’t sit in anger and resentment because she promised forever and then didn’t keep her side of the bargain. I don’t waste priceless energy planning how I will stay tightly closed off so that I will never hurt again.
I never thought I would have to make a life or death decision about my beloved kitty, Princess KiaraLee. I reached out for someone to tell me I didn’t have to make this decision. I found myself screaming to God night and day, “Please don’t take her from me; I need her!” My princess is my everything, you see; she’s my best friend, my companion, my safety, my spirit, my daughter. I loved waking to her kind eyes every morning, doing all I could to make her feel queen of the home. I joked often, “It’s really her condo; I just pay rent.” It never occurred to me to say “no” to the opportunity for true love the day she elegantly trotted through my front door. In fact, I can’t even imagine the last twelve years without her. But had I been too afraid to feel pain or loss, I might have said “no” and allowed the fear of loss and grief prevent me from the glory of love. In one breath, I would have gotten in my own way and sabotaged my own love story.
And I certainly don’t strategize how to control the behaviors and choices of others to prevent them from ever leaving me. Instead, I calmly share my love story with you and feel the warmth from my memories of her. I have been blessed with the miracle of all the years we shared, learned, played, loved. And it all started because I was open.
I repeated to myself: “If I truly loved her, I would let her go.”

Noticing the tears had ceased and the tissue box emptied, I looked back at my angel again. I whispered, “I do love you enough, my dear.” I swear she winked. “I love you so much I want you to be free of your pain.”

Your beliefs – about yourself and the world you live in – are the lens through which you experience life. Every thought, every feeling, every decision and every action you take, arises out of your beliefs. Many are so deeply ingrained that we take them for granted as representing reality and rarely question their validity. We act on beliefs as though they are a fixed part of us; while our subconscious selects information that reinforces what we already believe. Eastern masters have long advised, “Cease to cherish opinions.” From the Zen perspective, all beliefs are little more than current opinions – based on the best perceptions we can make, given our upbringing and conditioning, and what we would like to believe. Around age 3 or 4 we begin to make conclusions about our environment and form core beliefs to make sense of the world. Such deeply entrenched opinions can continue to operate subconsciously for a lifetime.

An important part of self-knowledge, it is necessary to take full ownership of what you believe something most people actually never do. Well, the wise and the brave are willing to question and test everything they believe in order to make better, more conscious decisions. Ultimately, we are responsible for our beliefs and the decisions we make from them. Believing itself is a choice, so decide wisely. Be sure to upgrade your beliefs as needed. Reinventing oneself is a natural progression of life. This means not only changing the structure in your life, but also by clearing it you allow your natural energy to flow in this time and space. Escaping The Prison Of Eating Disorders
point came when I decided that if I had to choose between being fat and being dead, that I would pick fat. It was my greatest fear, and one day I picked up an egg roll to face it. I looked at that egg roll and I told myself for the first time since I was 12 years old, “Go ahead and eat the egg roll. You are allowed to eat it because you’re hungry, it tastes good, and you can’t live in fear of an egg roll.” I ate it, and it was good. As silly as it might sound, it was one of the hardest decisions of myFromlife.that point on my recovery really began to take shape. After facing the fear of fat, I felt ready to face the real problems underneath. I finally had the courage to find people who could help me understand that my eating disorder was never about food, or thinness, or fatness. It was a way to hide, a way to find control, a way to cope; it was a distraction from deeper pains. Slowly, with great effort and with many stumbles along the way, I got better and my invisible prison faded steadily into mist and memory. Living with an eating disorder is like living in an invisible prison – a prison through which you can see into a world where other people seem to be living, eating and loving freely; but you are trapped, unable to find a way out into the world of ease and freedom, forced to watch with mute longing behind invisible walls. I know this feeling well because for 10 years I lived in the invisible prison of life with an eating disorder. I spent years looking at friends and family in disbelief and bitter jealousy, not understanding how they were able to simply eat without the all-consuming obsession and guilt that I felt with every mouthful. I truly believed that if I allowed myself to eat what I so desperately craved, obesity was just a few bites away. I even used to diet in dreams. I suffered from anorexia nervosa type II – a kind of anorexia that also includes periods of binging and purging, alongside prolonged periods of self-imposed starvation. At the time, I believed that anorexia was necessary in order to achieve my professional goals. Yes, I knew what I was doing; I knew it was called anorexia, and I knew that it could lead to heart failure, kidney failure, osteoporosis, amenorrhea and even death, but I didn’t care. It was going to help me get everything that I so desperately desired. However, like all deals made in darkness, secrecy and shame, it went sour. It didn’t give me my dreams; it stripped my body of every last resource until I was too weak to achieve what I had set out to do. It made me doubt myself; it made me hate myself.

Can trauma to the head or neck trigger the onset of Multiple Sclerosis (MS)? This question has been a topic of debate in medicine for years. The suspicion has lingered and does not seem to be fading at all with time. In fact, more medical researchers are documenting cases of MS diagnosed subsequent to head and neck trauma – too many to be caused by chance. While the link between spinal trauma and MS onset has never been formally proven, many researchers believe this to be factual. Some scientists suggest that the precise impact to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) – through whiplash, concussion, falls or blows to the head – will either cause the onset of MS or exacerbate existing symptoms.Researchers have discovered the link between cervical (neck) spinal cord injury and the formation of MS lesions (plaques) through MRI analysis. Some researchers believe that trauma alters the blood-brain barrier, which many consider to be a critical step in the formation of MS plaques. Some professionals believe that the trigger for plaque formation is isolated in the neck; that the cervical vertebrae become dislodged or misaligned by trauma, which can interfere with and cause damage to the brain and spinal cord. There are also those who state that correcting trauma-induced neck injuries may reverse the advancement of the disease.While more research is needed to determine the causal factors for Multiple Sclerosis, the role of spinal trauma appears to be an area worthy of further research. In traditional cultures, shamans were the village healers. They held a special connection with the spirits of the land, the plants, and what is commonly called non-ordinary reality – the reality beyond what we can see and touch. Their service to the community was to support healing of spiritual illness, hold ceremonies, perform rituals, bring back home the missing or lost parts of a soul, as well as rid any foreign energies from the body, mind or spirit. They attributed many diseases to what is known as soul loss. Soul loss often happens when there is a perceived trauma and the soul shoots out of the body in order to stay safe. This is actually a brilliant mechanism; but after years of perceived traumas, fright or deep grief, it can become problematic as physical, emotional or spiritual symptoms begin to manifest. The symptoms associated with soul loss are different for everyone, and often depend on the trauma or experiences that influenced the loss to begin with. An underlying felt sense of sadness or grief, deep fear, or not feeling satisfied, can become the norm. As one of my amazing teachers says so perfectly, you are only meant to run on your own energy; if you have absorbed others’ energies, you will find yourself overwhelmed, unable to cope with your own experiences and emotions.Shamanic healing calls the spirit home; it brings you back to your true nature. In order to fully live the life we desire, we must be fully here and fully embodied, and we must remember that we are part of a greater web of creation. When we make space for the wholeness of you to be here, to be embodied in the here and now, we have made room for more love, joy and presence in your life. This is reflected back to us by the experience of deeper intimacy in our lives – the ability to truly allow the soul to be seen and witnessed by another – which is something we often are so afraid of, yet crave so deeply.
In the Maya lineage, we use spiritual bathing to support the soul’s connection. This is a simple practice of filling a bowl with water, gathering your favorite flowers and plants while holding your prayer in your heart, breaking them up with your prayer or song for healing, and allowing this infusion to rest in the sunlight for a few hours. Then shower yourself with the plant-infused water while singing or praying out loud. It is important to pour this infusion over the crown of the head a minimum of three times. The significance of the number is that ritual is the repetition of an action done prayerfully; this creates a different pathway for the energy to move. Spiritual bathing is intended to be repeated over three to nine days in a row. To be most effective, the bath is to be made with fresh plants and taken outside in nature.

I have a confession to make – I’m still imperfect, for there are gaps between “me” and this
poetry. And every time I start to feel sad or maybe even separate, I can sense my mischievous soul tickling me, leaping from the shadows of suffering and saying: “Ha! I almost got you!” And soon the sun in me is smiling again; because something wonderful, truly wonderful, is always happening just around the corner of your courage to look inside yourself. Don’t be afraid of your feelings; emotions are fire expressing passion within you, lighting up your life with holy burning agony and delight. My prayer for you is that you begin to see beyond all your so-called blemishes, past those imperfections and character flaws that make your life full of texture in the end. Why keep looking for exit signs in the middle of moments that didn’t turn out to be quite what you’d expected? That kind of behavior keeps you searching in circles in a desert of seeming separation. Why not instead become that rouge violin who is always singing songs of sadness and joy with the same sacred vehemence! Your playfulness is praying for personification, so come be wild and crazy with me. Let’s become that laughing genie who is always granting every heart’s truest love requests, saying: “As you wish my dear, as you wish!” Then watch the whole hurting world open up around us and become one big love-fest after another, where there really is no cure in this insane love-game with God.
I can feel the mother of all calling us in and saying: “Welcome home dearest, life can be anything you want it to be.” Again with conviction the Universe keeps saying: “Life can be anything you want it to be!” Just have the courage to forgive yourself for not being able to see so far into the future that you might avoid all those so-called mistakes. You can never lose my dear, and you can never be lost. And one day soon you will rediscover your beauty again in a moment of unexpected smiling authenticity; because really you are just made of stars, and all you can do is shine, even if you’ve managed to somehow convince yourself that you have a so-called good reason to be unkind. When you dance free of guilt it makes our Beloved’s heart happy and leaves the entire Multiverse smiling wildly like a child saying: “Wow, wonder-full, I love you just the way you are!” The body has its habits, wants and desires, but the real you is not that. Just let the divine rascal in you come out and play; no need to make sense or follow any rules. Don’t be afraid to spill out all your sacred vulnerable essence upon the floor of this moment. It’s all right for you to express in your fullness that same great power which created everything in existence and still let your heart be humble.
