The Aloha Of Life And Death By Mark Sheehan This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. - Deuteronomy 30:19 So what is this Aloha Spirit of which we speak? It’s a caring and sharing among people, a feeling of protection for the environment, a remarkable openness, a “joyful sharing of life energy” according to Serge King. However defined, we know it’s unique and it’s about choosing life. Prior to western contact, they say you could walk from Ulupalakua to Haiku and rarely see the sun. What happened? Maybe ranchers burned the forest to create pasture as they do in the Amazon basin. Native people around the world live in their environments while the western world imposes technology over the environment. Indigenous people may war with each other, but they are not at war with the earth. Two hundred years of unconscious agriculture has resulted in the loss of much of Hawaii’s precious topsoil and the destruction of thousands of acres of earth from endless rotations, burns, monocropping, and massive use of pesticides. Unconscious techniques produce devastating results. Maui Pine used the toxic chemical DBCP for years, claiming it would never get down to the aquifers. It did. When sued, Dow Chemical paid a tiny fine, and ML&P paid nothing because they “were following manufacturer’s directions.” Corporations lie to the public as a matter of course, and then limit their liability with legal loopholes. Despite pleas from asthmatics, HC&S continues to burn cane in the fields; meanwhile the state DOH
ignores the issue, though they need only check emergency room logs to confirm the impacts. To add to the atmospheric assault of coal burning at the Puunene Mill, MECO burns high sulfur oil at its ancient Kahului Plant while refusing gigawatts of power from the wind farm. With all the thoughtless and abusive treatment of the island, what more damage could be done? Enter Monsanto! Famous for manufacturing herbicides like Agent Orange that devastated the lives of millions of Vietnamese, and DDT, PCBs, Bovine Growth Hormone, Aspartame, Nutrasweet, Equal, Polystyrene, and RoundUp, Monsanto now dominates big ag in the Aloha State. Where is the Aloha for the aina? How are employees informed and protected? What about the pollutants blowing from the stacks and drifting in the wind? Aloha requires care for the land and the people it supports. Our corporate “citizens” need to look beyond the bottom line to the health impacts and costs caused by their toxic practices. Our leaders need to wake up, stand up and speak up to protect the aina and the people of these islands. So, get the facts about cane burning, power

Maui will be no ka ‘oi when there is more water in our streams, when our soils are healthy, and when we have clean air. We are either moving towards life or away from it. The Spirit Of Aloha
What is it about Hawaii that inspires the Spirit of Aloha? As I took my morning oceanfront walk today, a gentle warm mist caressed my being as I looked out on an idyllic setting in Kapalua. As I settled into my favorite meditation spot, I thought about the unlikelihood that this place would ever have existed unless a Divine Force meant it to be. It’s as if God gave us a second chance, by creating a nourishing, abundant setting similar to, but not quite the same as, the Garden of Eden. Would it inspire goodness amongst its inhabitants? The answer, of course, is “Yes.” The spirit of giving and caring is rampant here. We take care of and respect each other, even amongst the multitudinous cultures with varying religions that call Hawaii home. Yes, we all truly get along, despite our differences. When I first moved to Maui from San Diego 15 years ago, I felt badly for what had happened to the Hawaiians and their homeland. It was Auntie Pua Mahoe, who was leading a blessing at a gathering, whose words made my heart melt. She explained that whatever forces drew us here, we are all Hawaiians. Her spirit of inclusiveness was genuine and real, and I then knew I belonged. Aloha to all! - Eric T. Richter, publisher

Aloha Is The Heartbeat
By Jeana Iwalani Naluai Aloha is a word that has been heard across the globe since Elvis’s “Blue Hawaii.” It has become a catch-all term for anything, from “Aloha Hot Dogs” to “Aloha Plumbing.” As much as this word has been tossed around both formally and casually, it is important to understand its deeper meaning (kaona) within the Hawaiian language. “Alo” is the part of us that faces one another and is connected to Ke Akua (Divine Spirit). “Ha” is the breath that is our essence—divine breath. When Hawaiians greet one another, touching forehead to forehead and exchanging divine breath, it signifies the coming together and recognition of a soul connection. Over time, this connection has become an entity of its own here on the islands, known as “Aloha Spirit.” The Spirit of Aloha can be felt in simple acts of loving kindness or in a warm embrace; it is felt by all who come here. My uncles, Clayton and Alan Naluai, were big entertainers in 1960 at the peak of the Waikiki show circuit. They had a band called “The Surfers” and they sang the beautiful harmonies of hapa haole music. Uncle Alan was a poet and songwriter who was asked to write a jingle for a major island airline. I think the words flowed easily for him because in our family, Aloha was not just a word, but it was also a spirit that was felt among every person and within every place on this ‘aina (land). It is the love we recognize in one another, the love that connects us all. Aloha is the heartbeat of this land. Jeana Iwalani Naluai is a native Hawaiian practitioner and an international instructor of Lomi Lomi massage and Hawaiian spiritual teachings. She is the director and owner of Ho’omana Spa Maui, where she shares the ancient healing ways of her ancestors. To get in touch visit www.lomimassage.com or call 808.573.8256.
Embody Aloha
By Nancy Friedrich In this season of my life I know what works best for me. One of the things I have learned is that each day I must choose and re-choose ease in my life to promote my own inner peace and optimal health. I have discovered that I can practice Aloha to myself, which makes me a better person, mother, wife, and a better practitioner in the opportunities I have to serve. I am still learning what Aloha means to me. I see it as a way to live one’s life in balance; it aligns perfectly with the universals of indigenous healing and wisdom ways that I study and value. I feel that Aloha is about engaging with what is beautiful, true and life affirming in ourselves, in others, and in the world. That includes honoring and respecting all of life, and serving what is life affirming with a generous heart. We do this with our thoughts, our words, and our actions. We can start with self-acceptance and being more compassionate towards self; that supports us to see the best in others. We can practice loving kindness and Ho‘oponopono when disharmony is apparent, and we can strive for harmony. We can live the prayer, asking for the best for all concerned and for seven generations. This is my North Star. When I come into contact with a person who embodies Aloha, it is incredibly apparent. There is a generosity of spirit that has a beautiful impact on others. It fosters cooperation and mutual respect; it is a healing force. It is exactly what the cultures of the world and our planet need from us right now. Nancy Friedrich, faculty with Foundation for Shamanic Studies, offers individual sessions in her private practice using indigenous healing methods combined with her healing arts background. She will be teaching two workshops this fall. For more information visit SoulMattersMaui.com, email shamanicjourneying@gmail.com, or call 808.269.5137.

The Spirit Of Aloha ~ An Unexpected Gift By Liah Howard
Societal immersion calls for a letting go of old ways and embracing new culture with an open mind and heart. As a haole learning to embody the Spirit of Aloha, I must first become aware of the conditioning from which I came in order to learn to live life differently. Likewise, an American assimilating to France can learn the language, but a bit of the old accent will remain until there is a merging with the language, people and customs. During the many years I’ve lived on Maui, I have been blessed to learn about the great Spirit of Aloha. Shortly after I moved to Maui, my youngest son joined the local paddling team. I was excited that he was reaching out, making new friends and learning a new sport. I had no idea he was going to be immersed in the heart of Hawaiian culture. I thought he was going to get in shape and make friends. I soon learned that the Spirit of Aloha permeated every aspect of paddling—from the prayer, or pule, offered before every race, to the lei that was lovingly draped on the paddler’s tired neck at the end of the regatta. This Aloha was felt as a spirit of union, love and harmony with the divine and each other. I could also detect a strong sense of reverence and respect for the land, or aina, and the sea, or kai. I was welcomed into the sacred circle of love of the canoe club and I experienced the feeling of Aloha. I experienced another lesson of Aloha
during the first week of my son paddling. One day, while I waited for him to finish paddling practice, I became quite hot in the sun. I decided to rest against an old low rock wall under the shade of a kiawe tree and check my cell phone. The shade was a welcome relief from the heat of the day. Within two minutes, a man who had been quietly putting paddles away came over to me and said with kindness, “Could you please not sit there—this is a heiau, a sacred site to

us Hawaiians.” He then smiled and went on to explain that a heiau is to be honored and revered. I felt like I had just committed the sin of washing my face in the holy water at a Catholic church. I jumped up and said, “I’m so very sorry, I didn’t know.” As I stepped away from the rock wall and took a minute to take in the specialness of this site, I realized that the rocks were in a rectangle formation defined by a flat surface in the center. Reflecting on my experience that day, I realized I did not feel judged or scoffed by the Hawaiian man. He was gracious when he asked me to move and was kind when he explained the purpose of the heiau. His loving manner opened my heart and allowed me to see beyond my mainland perspective. Since that time, I have grown in my understanding of the Spirit of Aloha and this has been an unexpected gift of living in Hawaii. With each passing year, I feel myself assimilating more and more into the Hawaiian culture and leaving behind my mainland mode. I now smile and say “Aloha” with an awareness of what that means. Better Or Bitter
By Aaron Pierson Life can, is and will always be very difficult at times. Sometimes it feels like all the time. We can look at these times as lessons to learn from or we can get sucked up in the endless conflict in which most people live. It seems that most of the world is caught up in deep conflict. What do we do when someone hurts us very deeply, we get cheated out of money, we have a car crash, we get a ticket, or we cannot pay the electric bill or our car payment? The list goes on and on. A long time ago I heard that when life gets rough and we get knocked down, we can respond in one of two ways. “We can become better or we can become bitter.” I was around 23 years old when I heard this statement. It has been a very deep and critical part of my daily life. I remember it each time I feel myself getting angry, irritated or hurt about something, which actually just happened last night! I was deeply hurt by someone’s actions in a way that has happened many times before. At first I was deeply hurt. Then I became irritated. Then I became angry! I was then sad for the whole thing and for the fact that I got hooked into the conflict of life again. Then I was very remorseful and remembered those two words: better or bitter. Instantly I started to relax and let go. No matter what has happened in my life since I first heard those two words put in this form, I have always chosen to become better. I have seen too many people die in their bitterness, so miserable that they cannot find any peace at all. For me it is a wonderful place of Aloha, of love and compassion, to simply let go of all the conflict and choose to become better. I think it is our closest personal relationships that can affect us the most deeply. The people we love the most are often the people by whom we feel hurt the most. Some people can be so deeply selfish and have no clue as to how much they hurt other people. They continue to inflict pain on every soul they come into contact with, or sometimes it is just their intimate partner, husband or wife with whom they have difficulty. It is when the pain is the deepest, the wound the most painful, that we come to this place to choose the actions of our heart and soul. It is not just our words that we have to choose. It is also our attitude and our energy. As I grow each day, I find a deeper test is always in the works for me to choose to become a better soul in this life, or for me to fall deep into the pit of bitterness that can be such a trap. With this in mind, I hope these two words stick in your mind and heart as they have for me all of these years. Just remember, no matter what we do, we have a choice to become better or to become bitter. Aaron is a person of compassion, seeking wisdom and sharing with tenderness the sacred essence of truth and love. He has authored six books on life’s journey to love, freedom and living a daily life of honor and compassion. You may contact him through his website, www.spiritualhealing-enlightenment.us.
Kissed By Aloha
By Suzan H. Proia, C.Ht. Within hours of arriving on Maui for the first time, I decided to relocate. The idea of moving 5000 miles from the East Coast to “paradise” was thrilling. My checklist: learn the language, become familiar with the culture, adopt the diet, dress the part, immerse myself in the music. During my trip I worked with a new client – a lovely local lady. I seized this golden opportunity to ask advice of “Lina,” whose lineage dated back to the original Hawaiians. I told her my plan, and asked what would be the best and fastest way to assimilate. She sat quietly, looking at me with tranquil wisdom, and replied, “Whatever you do, do NOT try to be one of us. Whatever reason Maui is calling you to her, celebrate that. This is the gift you bring to Maui.” Her words resonated deeply, and I felt a tremendous weight dissolve, replaced by a new calm. Maui is sacred. The people and the land are blessed. Although I did not originate here, I was drawn in to make this island my home and begin to give back. It is said that Maui either welcomes you in, or spits you out and blows you away. I am blessed to have always felt welcomed – by those who live here, by the land itself, and by the ocean that kisses her shores. The spirit of Aloha permeates Maui. It entered my soul the first time I stepped barefoot onto the rich red earth of this island. I strive to give back to the land and to the people every day. Thank you, Mother Maui. With Aloha. The Teachings Of Aloha
By Eliza Bassett Ask someone anywhere in the world about Hawaii, and most likely they will know this word of the Hawaiian language—Aloha. The word Aloha can mean “hello” or “goodbye.” It also has something to do with love. As you live on these islands, you learn that there are many ways to interpret what this word brings to our lives. That is kaona, or the hidden meaning in the Hawaiian language. Some people step off the plane, smell the air, touch the soil, sea and sands, and immediately begin to feel the message of Aloha from the land through the messages in their bodies. One lesson of Aloha is this: “Care for me and it will return to you from us.” Other people may be more in their minds, learning about Aloha through interactions with people. This means the lessons of Aloha arrive through the heart. Sometimes that takes a while, as the distance between head and heart is a long journey for some. As time goes by, people hear and witness kindness when someone is upset, angry or wounded and is sharing all of that intensity with their immediate world. The focused expression of the Aloha heart energy can melt all difficulties. This can be expressed as Ho’oponopono. The understanding of meeting anger with gentility runs deep within the elders who walk the path of Aloha. Many offer the Aloha of caring by assisting people who are struggling. There is a time limit to their personal involvement and they will turn away if their giving is unappreciated or abused. Self-respect and self-preservation, without anger, are key to limiting involvement. The basic lessons of Aloha are: be kind; what you give, you will receive; live from your heart but do not allow yourself to be used. Remember to smile with Aloha from your heart. One Word, Many Lessons
By Lisa Evans It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. – Antoine de Saint-Exupery Words. Sometimes they seamlessly flow from head to heart, pen to paper, fingertips to keyboard. Sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they say exactly what you want or how you feel, and it’s like they sing and dance and playfully tumble onto the page like kids just let out for the summer. Sometimes they stay away for long periods of time like some families do with their elderly relatives at nursing homes because sometimes you don’t know what to say or you can’t find the right combination of letters that best describe how you feel. Sometimes saying less means more. Aloha is but one word, but it carries many meanings. It is more than just a standard Hawaiian greeting. It is love. It is a way of life. And while living life may not always be easy, it can be lived more simply. Here’s a simple recipe for living life with more Aloha: Be kind – To yourself. To others. To the planet. Do good – For friends. For strangers. For those less fortunate than you. Have trust – When doubt appears. When it hurts. When all else fails. Slow down – Behind the wheel. At the table. Life, in general. Play often – To feel better. To be healthier. To live longer. Create more – Time for solitude. Art that inspires. Peace in the world. Give thanks – For your body. For your mind. For your spirit. Love all – The eccentrics. Your exes. Supposed enemies. Practice daily – Patience. Compassion. Forgiveness. Live honestly – Have integrity. Tell the truth. Be real. Lisa Evans is a writer and movement arts facilitator. When she’s not practicing her own recipe for Aloha, she’s writing her first book. A Brief Intro To Qigong By Frank (Hou Hee) Chan Qigong is a Chinese body and mind exercise with more than 5000 years of history. Qigong consists of two words—qi and gong. All things in the universe, visible and invisible, are the manifestation of qi. In other words, qi is the source or the matter that makes up the universe. The appearance or disappearance of matter is caused by the transmutation (concentration or dispersal) of qi. Qi exists in and permeates everything. In the word “qigong,” “qi” means life energy—an invisible and formless substance that powers the functions of human life; and “gong” means practice. The two words combined mean “practicing qi.” Depending on the purpose of the practice, qigong can be cataloged into five schools—Taoist qigong, Buddhist qigong, Confucius qigong, martial arts qigong and medical qigong. Generally speaking, the purpose for Taoist qigong is attaining immortality, Buddhist qigong is enlightenment, Confucius qigong is cultivating virtue, martial arts qigong is self-defense, and medical qigong is maintaining health. All schools of qigong have two things in common: relaxation (both physical and mental) and concentration. The basic qigong practice follows a fixed rhythmic routine. The body posture can be moving or stationary, depending on whether the routine is physical or mental. Although the majority of qigong
methods regulate breathing, qigong is not a breathing exercise. Most of the time, practitioners use breathing as a technique to help them concentrate. The newer generation of medical qigong techniques use natural breathing. How does qigong work? Medical qigong, for instance, involves the concepts of concentration and dispersion of qi. Practicing medical qigong strengthens this natural process. If this process functions normally, then the human body is operating at its optimum potential. We become ill when this process has been disrupted. For example, when qi is concentrated too much and is not being dispersed in a normal way, too much qi accumulates in an area, creating a tumor. If we can disperse the qi, then the tumor will disappear. Practicing qigong is the process of training the body to open to the universe
to disperse abnormal qi, followed by relaxing and allowing body functions to return to normal. Imagine someone yells “fire!” in a crowded theater and everyone rushes around in a panic, trampling each other in their effort to get out. Disaster ensues. However, if a few people get up and get fire extinguishers, while the rest line up to evacuate the building in an orderly fashion, then the process becomes efficient, with no disaster. Relaxing the body allows physiological and biochemical functions to regain their healthy balance. This is the goal of qigong practice. Once we train the body to relax, the body can maintain health even in the stress of daily life. In the early 1980s, Pang Ming, a qigong grandmaster and physician, founded Huaxia Zhineng Qigong Clinic & Training Center in Qinghuangdao, China. The Center treated patients with more than 180 diseases, with an overall effective rate of more than 95%. It was one of the world’s most successful and largest alternative “medicine-less” hospitals. Like any kind of healthcare modality, qigong is not a panacea. It requires effort and persistence. But it is a very useful tool for anyone who is interested in maintaining good health. Frank (Hou Hee) Chan, a Chilel Qigong™ teacher, has studied and practiced qigong and taiji for over 25 years. He has taught qigong in medical conferences, retreats and workshops since 1994. He will teach a qigong retreat on Maui September 14 and 15. For more information, call 888.864.0588, visit MedicineBeginsWithMe.com, or email frankchan@MedicineBeginsWithMe.com.

Gift Of The Stars
By Jody Mountain As humans, we share DNA with all living things. As carbon-based beings, our cells contain remnants of exploding stars. In fact, about 93 percent of the mass in our bodies is stardust. Within that mass, however, 99.9999 percent is space. Ancient indigenous peoples have known this for thousands of years. In this modern age, we have come to depend on science. If we can measure it and label it, then we have a certified, proven fact. With the advent of quantum physics, science is finally meeting the enlightenment of our ancestors. The immeasurable gift of Aloha that I have received from the Life in these islands is the ability to experience new life, infinite space and star presence through the crucible of the body. The Ancients forged pathways to this limitless space within and shared with us how to listen. From them, we discover that all of Life is actually Alive. We are filled with beings within beings, worlds within worlds and universes within universes. As we pay attention to these living, breathing intelligences inside of us, they awaken their unique voices, recognition and unfolding. What becomes important is not what you know, but rather, where do you source your awareness? What is your foundation? Do you honor all of Life in you? In the West, we sometimes struggle to live a meaningful life, often looking to our jobs, our relationships or our possessions to satisfy us. Meanwhile, inside our cells lies the wisdom of the ages. If we can depose the mighty mind as God of our intelligence, and head in the direction of what we don’t know and cannot possibly know, I predict we will experience more Expanded Life than we ever thought possible.

The Dalai Lama Teaches Me Freedom From Suffering By Paul O’Brien The Dalai Lama recently visited Portland, Oregon for a four-day summit. His entourage stayed in the hotel below the condo where I live. A supporter of Tibetan culture, I was asked by the local Rinpoche if I could help sponsor the visit. As I wrote the check, I asked if I could just get a snapshot with His Holiness. Rinpoche replied that he thought it was possible and would see what he could do. As the conference approached, Rinpoche asked if the Dalai Lama’s cook could use my kitchen to prepare meals during the visit. I was delighted to be able to further contribute – even after I learned that his crew would be coming at 3:30 every morning to prepare breakfast and take over my living space until 6 p.m. Tibetans streamed in and out every day, which was fine by me because I love these people. It’s a wonder how refugees whose culture is being systematically destroyed in slow motion can be so cheerful, forgiving, generous and kind. Tibetans, with the enlightening example of their spiritual leader, truly understand and live out compassion, which makes them delightful to be around. Even though His Holiness never came to visit, I was honored to be hanging out with his cook and personal secretary. But I was also emotionally attached – very attached, unfortunately – to my desire for that photo, and my suffering was growing day-by-day. This was the worst kind of attachment, because it
combined with a donor’s feelings of entitlement. And, there was nothing I could do! The Dalai Lama was one floor away, surrounded by security, and there was no way I could get near him. So close, yet so far. (When I asked his secretary if he would take me down, he sadly grunted with a Tibetan accent, “Very difficult.”) As the last day of his visit approached, I realized that my growing anxiety was an example of
what His Holiness teaches about the Four Noble Truths. I was suffering and, as the second truth explains, the cause of the suffering was my craving. My involvement with the Dalai Lama was directly teaching me the central lesson of happiness! I knew that the only important thing was to support his cause and what his model of compassion and selflessness offers the world. It practically made me cry to consider that he’s getting frail and that he is going to die, perhaps along with Tibetan culture itself. This is when I flipped the “let-go” switch. In comparison to the value he brings, my attachment to a photo was petty indeed. As I let go of my craving for it, I immediately felt relief from suffering, just like the third truth promises. On the last full day of his visit, Rinpoche asked (to my surprise), “Did you get a snapshot with His Holiness?” Shocked, I replied, “No … but I would love it if that can happen!” He went silent, thought for a moment and said, “Be on the 5th floor at 7:30 a.m.” The next morning, when my turn came in the photo line, Rinpoche said to His Holiness, “This is the man whose kitchen we’ve been using.” I added, “It made me happy to help … and the leftovers were great. Thank you.” His Holiness put a ceremonial scarf on me and smiled knowingly. Snap! Paul O’Brien is the author of the Visionary I Ching and Divination ebooks, and is the founder of Divination.com where his photo with the Dalai Lama can be seen.

Ozone’s Benefits Revealed
By Nancy Jane Since the early 1900s, ozone therapy has been used safely and effectively for a variety of ailments. Ozone (o3) is a gas made up of three oxygen atoms. In the human body, ozone is antiviral and antibacterial; it also enhances the immune system and destroys 99 percent of all microorganisms. It increases blood flow and oxygenation, and provides the necessary cell energy for the body to begin to heal itself. Without oxygen, the cells cannot function properly. When oxygen levels in the body decrease, the potential for disease increases. The ozone steam sauna stimulates the entire lymph system; toxins are oxidized and eliminated through the skin, lungs, kidneys and colon. In the sauna, the activated oxygen rapidly breaks down into -o2 and +o. Organic peroxides are created in the oils of the body being excreted from and existing in the skin. Those that do not react with it can react with the singlet negatively charged oxygen ion (o-). It is these forms of oxygen that do all of the work inside of the body. The ozone steam sauna has been used in European countries for the last 50 years. Results show improved health, energy and vitality. A 30-minute ozone steam sauna session helps the body restore itself to its natural state. It is also very calming to the nervous system, allowing for a serene state of mind. Each session is followed by a cool down period with a relaxing foot reflexology treatment. In these days of air pollution, toxins in food, lack of exercise and increasing stress levels, ozone therapy can be of great use to improve and maintain overall health and wellbeing. It can support you to feel your best, and it can also bring an incredible glow to your presence! Nancy Jane is an experienced ozone practitioner who offers ozone steam sauna treatments and other applications. Navigating The Self-Inquiry Challenge
By Ginny Ross The spiritual journey can be an intriguing and mystifying road to self-realization. A spiritual experience can spur us on to deeper exploration. For most of us this inward journey is strewn with remnants of outgrown attitudes and behaviors. Some relationships don’t survive the transformation toward higher consciousness and elevated intentions, and we succumb to feelings of loneliness and isolation. This is common and to be expected when we turn our backs on the ordinary to seek the sublime. We can dabble at spirituality and browse through books of knowledge, but for each of us there comes a time to take a stand. For those committed to a life of personal growth and contribution, it is often difficult to find individual guidance and support, especially if we look for direction outside of traditional religious settings. Who can help us navigate the inevitable dark nights of the soul? How do we learn to seize the opportunities that spirit lays before us each day? It is a rare gift to intimately share the subtle and profound steps of a dedicated spiritual journey with someone who understands and respects the challenges and elation of that path. Each of us is unique and our pace along the path is obscure. Yet the purpose is the same—to reveal the true self to the personal ego and align them for self-mastery. This is where the wise guidance and encouragement of a spiritual mentor can light the way. In my work as an intuitive astrologer and spiritual mentor, I come to know each person as a dynamic synthesis of energies, vibrant with potential and purpose. Using the insights that soul-centered astrology reveals, my approach to mentoring is compassionate and penetrating. It can provide clarity, instill confidence, and encourage honest self-inquiry and accountability in those who are ready for the challenge. Ginny Ross is an intuitive astrologer and spiritual mentor. Judy Levy is a conscious entrepreneur. Her new bookstore, boutique and gallery, Awakening In Paradise (in Long’s Plaza in Kihei), opens August 16. Holistic practitioners and psychic readers will be available daily. It will feature mystical tools for transformation. Classes, workshops, events, movies and décor create a special destination experience!
By Lavenda Schaff When I travel to other parts of the world, I often notice people’s eyes light up when I tell them where I live. According to my Ho’oponoPono teacher, Auntie Mahealani Henry-Kuamo’o, the Hawaiian language in its core essence is one of the oldest languages on earth. Its vibrational frequency reaches down into the DNA level of our beings and reminds us of who we are. Many people know at least one Hawaiian word: Aloha. This word is often used as a greeting. A deeper meaning of Aloha, according to the Hawaiian dictionary, is love, kindness, respect, honor. The Ho’oponoPono teachings look at the two syllables separately: “Alo” means “in front of, in the face of”; and “ha” expresses “breath of life.” So, when you are greeted with the word Aloha, not only is the speaker expressing love, kindness and respect for you; he or she is also acknowledging your presence asCha,” the breath of life, in connection with Ke Akua, the Divine Source. How can we live Aloha with a sense of that deeper meaning? There is a very simple way for us to start. We can simply step in front of a mirror every morning, look into our own eyes, and greet ourselves loudly with the word “Aloha.” Breathe it in, receive it, and feel acknowledged by ourselves for this moment of love, respect and kindness. In this moment we can feel the spirit, or breath of life, within. Repeat it, smile, and feel the joy of this precious moment of knowing who you are deep down in your core. Aloha!
3 Day Cleanses
A gentle path to health, nourishment and change...
By Judy Levy The world will be proud of Maui as we demonstrate what full sustainability and health look like on our magical island. The Hawaiians were a self-sustaining population; they have shared much of their wisdom to help those of us who wish to grow some of our own healthy food here in paradise. Through Maui’s Farmer’s Union and Upcountry Sustainability, I continue to learn beneficial ways to make my backyard garden more nourishing and beautiful. The Pleiadians call it “eating fresh news from the sun,” as each day we ingest gorgeous greens grown with love from our gardens. Even in paradise there are environmental toxins that seem beyond our control. It is our responsibility—as Aloha ambassadors and conscious citizens who want to live long, healthy and happy lives—to do whatever we can to keep our immune systems strong and clean. It is quite appalling that we import 85 percent of our food. It is more sensible for each of us to grow a little green goodness in our yards—in pots or small patches of ground. My personal mantra on my journey is: “I get stronger and healthier every day.” Being in my garden and communing with my precious plants supports this belief and keeps me flexible. In addition to growing my garden, I’m opening a store that offers cosmic crystals and treasures from the planet to help us make sense of the chaos and to experience higher purpose for our lives. It is such an exciting time of transition and awakening on our planet. Join the fun and grow your own food!

Magical Connection Between Land And Sky Leads To Transformation
By Daniel Giamario Recent discoveries in the fields of anthropology and archaeology have opened windows into the remarkable past of global humanity. We now know that the human beings of today have had the same DNA for 160,000 to 240,000 years. Your clan mother or clan father can now be easily determined. We are all the same people. The way culture has been experienced by most of the world over the last 3,000 to 4,000 years has been an anomaly, brought on by the strange combination of hierarchical patriarchy, mostly patrilineal family structures, and monotheistic religions. False classes and hierarchies, disempowerment of the feminine, and disconnect from and disrespect for mother earth are widespread. Fortunately, we now know that it has not been this way for a far longer time in our history. Global humanity has a rich and varied history of cooperation, less warfare, and alliance between men and women. Above all, human beings experienced themselves as part of the earth, not as dominators, with all of life being the infinite variations of the four chords of DNA. In some parts of the world, notably Polynesia, the ways of life that existed globally before the aforementioned triple anomaly lasted far longer. In Hawaii, the land of true Aloha, these ways lasted all the way up to the arrival of Pa’ao in the 12th or 13th century, bringing extreme class divisions, warfare, and human sacrifice. In many parts of the world, including Hawaii, people are learning to reject the triple aberration and return to the ways that global humanity lived for millennia—ways of life that emphasize the “joyful sharing of life energy in the present.” As a shamanic astrologer, I am inspired and grateful to be in Hawaii. I deeply respect the wayfaring traditions of the Polynesian celestial navigators and the ancient knowledge going back to the Sea Peoples who set out to restore civilization after the final melting of ice at the end of the last Ice Age. Now there is a renaissance of celestial star navigation all over the Pacific. I love places like the sky temple cosmogram overlooking the Wailua River in Kauai. On every island there are ancient heiaus, many of which are calendric and cosmological places of ceremony for connecting us to the magical link between the land and the sky. I love that in many parts of Polynesia there is interest in relearning the ancient knowledge of the Moon cycle, where all can learn the shape and meaning of the Moon under which they were born. I love the work of Uncle Keone Kalawe, chief restorer of the ancient heiau of the Big Island, who rededicates the cosmological heiaus back to I’o, rather than the god of war. Haleakala first called to me in the early 1980s. Over the years the shamanic astrology paradigm has been greatly inspired by the ways our predecessors created their cultures in harmony with the seasons and cycles, with a living relationship to the stars. The mission of the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School is to provide transformational education in astronomy and astrology, celebrating the magical connection between land and sky. This is a literalization of the ancient Hermetic dictum: “As Above So Below, As Within So Without.” And as the ancient cultures intended: the bringing of Heaven to Earth. Daniel Giamario is founder of the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School and has been an astrologer for 43 years. He is available for consultations, talks and workshops. He will host a training August 17-24 in Huelo. Visit www.shamanicastrology.com or call 808.876.0985.

Hitting The Reset Button
By Tyua Sereda In Hawaiian, ola means life, health and wellbeing. Mana is another word that describes life force or power. Good health means being deeply nourished on a cellular level. Despite living on a beautiful island that offers us so many opportunities to be healthy in body, mind and spirit, when life gets busy, we can fall into unconscious patterns with food, thoughts, or emotions. We may feel tired, depleted and disconnected from the life force that gives us strength and energy. A little voice deep within us says, “I need a break!” But it is often ignored as we fly through our busy days. Gentle cleansing is a wonderful way to help change patterns and to hit the reset button. One of the most tangible ways to do this is through shifting our eating habits. When we make a conscious choice to cleanse with light foods and liquids, our bodies respond immediately as they begin to purge toxicity. Our minds and emotions will often follow as old patterns bubble up to the surface where they can be released. It’s not always pleasant to release old habits, but the results can be significant. Changing a pattern, even for a few days, can have profound and lasting effects because it creates an awareness in the mind and body. When we clear away the old, our bodies can begin to be deeply nourished. Having this new awareness helps us make the choices that support our long-term health and connects us with our mana (for example, choosing a piece of fresh fruit instead of a sugary caffeinated drink). Making good choices consistently creates life, health, a sense of wellbeing... ola. This is the gift of gentle cleansing. joy’s place LIVE! offers 3-day cleanses from their Upcountry kitchen, and a large selection of live food at joy’s place in Kihei, Whole Foods Market and Down To Earth. For more information call 808.572.2186, visit www.joysplacemaui.com, or email info@joysplacemaui.com.

Break The Rules (Accept One)
By Jonathan Yudis People who live according to preset assumptions and unwritten rules perpetuated by the status quo are bound for a rude awakening. We live in a universe with free choice, where very few rules actually exist. Much of life’s journey and expression can be colored by drawing outside of the proverbial lines. If the goal is grace, then the primary rule to observe is simple: do no harm. Ideally, this extends to all beings and to life itself. It is also the negative polarity to its equal and opposite positive expression: love others. This could be translated to “love others and yourself,” or more simply as “love.” Throughout human history, there have been very few principles that enlightened minds and elevated hearts have all agreed upon, and this is one of them. Like all divinely perceived principles, they become interpreted and presented as laws or rules, but to those truly perceiving them, they are simply observations on the nature of life itself. Love is less a rule than it is the underlying glue that unites everything in any reality to stick together. Once this is perceived, it becomes the obvious choice for how to organically synthesize and flow with life itself. And the amazing thing is that this very process is effortless. Love is not a rule and it is not even our purpose. Like a fruit that does not have to make an effort to become ripe, or a wave that does not need to force itself to become one with the ocean, love is a beautiful and eternally effervescent expression of our identity. Jonathan Yudis is a best-selling author, award winning filmmaker, teacher, Yogi Siromani, and devoted Maui family man. Aloha Aina: Love Of The Land
By Barbara Ensign For the past 33 years, I have made Hawaii my home. Hawaii’s impressive beauty and warm-hearted Hawaiian people lured me in with warm Aloha. I have visited all of the Hawaiian islands; each island has its own unique beauty. The scenery ranges from spectacular, rugged mountains and active volcanoes to white sand beaches and lush, tropical trees and vegetation with fragrant flowers of dazzling shapes and colors. We are blessed with magnificent rainbows, sunrises and sunsets, as well as exotic fruits such as papayas, passion fruit, guavas, and lychees. Above all, it is the hospitality and the warm Aloha of the Hawaiian culture that I love the most. In my early years living on the islands, I joined a halau, where I learned so much more than how to dance hula. The word Aloha has so many different meanings, from love and affection to welcome and goodbye; the one that touches me the most is Aloha aina, the deep love of the land. I spend a majority of my free time hiking to many different and obscure places on the islands that I am certain only a small minority have experienced. One of the most profound experiences I have had was just prior to going up into the mountains by horseback in Kipahulu, listening to the Hawaiian chanting and asking for permission from the land before entering. To me, true Aloha is not just being humble and having respect for the land that is nurturing and sustaining us, but being humble and respectful to every flower, every individual, every thought, every possession and every aspect of life itself. Barbara Ensign is a certified hypnotherapist who has practiced “hypnosis with Aloha” on Maui for over 10 years. She specializes in Past Life and Life Between Lives spiritual regression, and helping people make positive changes in their lives. Her office is in Makawao. Chronic Headache Relief
By Erin Elster, D.C. What causes chronic headaches? According to medical research, it has been difficult to pinpoint the exact reason(s) why certain people suffer chronic headache pain; however, research is pointing to upper cervical (neck) trauma as an underlying cause for many types of headaches, especially migraine, cluster and tension headaches. The upper cervical area of the spine refers to the two vertebrae located at the top of the spine, directly underneath the head. These vertebrae are extremely vulnerable to injury through trauma, such as blows to the head, whiplash, auto and sports accidents, and falls. When these upper cervical vertebrae become displaced, even slightly, chronic head pain can occur. Unless the neck injury is addressed, the symptoms persist. Upper cervical chiropractic care involves correcting the position of these injured cervical vertebrae, which may reduce or eliminate many types of headaches. Liz, age 28, did not have trouble with migraine headaches until she took up snowboarding. “I began having migraines during the last five years after head-first crashes while snowboarding,” she said. “Within two weeks of upper cervical care, my symptoms began to diminish. Within a month, I was able to stop taking my daily medication because the migraines stopped.” Many headaches are successfully treated with upper cervical chiropractic care. The number of treatments required varies by individual, and is determined by factors such as age, severity of the cervical injury, and also the type and frequency of headache. A first visit to an upper cervical chiropractor usually involves a spinal exam and diagnostic tests, including infrared imaging and cervical x-rays, to determine whether a cervical injury is present and whether the patient can benefit from treatment. Dr. Erin Elster is an upper cervical chiropractor who has successfully treated over 250 patients with chronic headaches. Her published headache research is available on her website: www.erinelster.com. For more information, please contact Dr. Elster in Kahului at 808.866.6551 or erin@erinelster.com.

By Rev. Debbie Dehm You might think I started to learn about Aloha when I came to Maui to study with Auntie Pua Mahoe. Auntie Pua is a kahuna whose kuliana is to teach the Spirit of Aloha. I met her in Sedona, Arizona at a gathering of elders and she became my teacher and Auntie. But I actually started to learn what Aloha meant many years before in my massage school. The first massage school I attended was the DanZan Ryu School founded by Master Henry Okazaki. Master Okazaki was a Japanese American who lived in Hawaii and taught many military people at his Jujitsu school. Part of the black belt training is learning resuscitation techniques and massage to treat injuries after practice. Because he lived in Hawaii, he studied with kahunas to learn Hawaiian fighting techniques and massage. He incorporated much of what he learned into his school and passed on the traditions of Aloha and ohana to his students. I remember learning Hawaiian words and traditions in my classes. When we got together with other students for a weekend workshop and retreat, the teachers dressed up in hula outfits and danced! We were expected to show great respect to the elder teachers, and to help others in the ohana whenever they needed it. When someone who owned an orchard was hurt and could not take care of it, some of the men took care of it for him until he could work again. It was the Hawaiian influence on our training that made a difference. We practiced the Spirit of Aloha and ohana, and it became a part of me. When I met Auntie Pua, I knew what she was talking about. I was prepared for my life in Hawaii fourteen years before I moved here.

By Margo Uma Gal, CAP There are two Sanskrit definitions for the word ginger. Adrakh means moist, and sunthi means dry. In Ayurveda, ginger is known as the universal medicine that benefits all diseases. This especially applies to vata disorders. Vata is dry, light, nervous, cold and always moving; it consists of ether and air. Some common ailments for a person of such nature may be constipation, anxiety, cold hands and cold feet. Ginger increases circulation to all parts of the body, especially to digestion where the fire, or agni, can be weak. In this case bloating, gases and constipation can occur. Due to its moist heating properties, ginger can ignite the fire of digestion like nothing else. Its taste is pungent and sweet, its energy is heating, and its quality is fresh, unctuous, light and penetrating. These qualities can contribute to the strengthening of a weak digestive fire. Ginger works naturally to assist apana vayu, the downward movement. This is especially true if one is feeling nauseated from a weak or sluggish digestive system. If you chew on a piece of fresh ginger, the juices naturally assist in strengthening the digestive fire. Therefore, correct digestion is ensured and the energy moves in its natural direction—downwards. Dry ginger, which is more heating, is often used internally along with castor oil for rheumatoid arthritis. This gives amazing results. Ginger also clears phlegm in coughs and colds, increasing peripheral circulation and causing vasodilatation and sweating. It clears ama, or toxins, from the plasma and blood. These are just a few examples where ginger has been shown to have extraordinary healing powers. A perennial that thrives all over India and Sri Lanka, ginger grows well in the Hawaiian islands as it loves hot and damp environments.
Practicing Aloha
By Lynda Wright We are fortunate to live on Maui, which is said to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. In addition, the cultural practice of Aloha allows our hearts to soften and open as we share and experience loving practices in our daily lives. I once read that when we say Aloha, it means “I honor the higher self in you as you also honor my higher self.” In April, I reached an important personal goal by taking off 100 pounds. As part of my successful exercise regime I practiced yoga. I loved doing yoga when I was in my 20s and 30s. While living in Portland, Oregon at that time, I first heard the Hindu word Namaste said as a practice of respect at the end of yoga classes. Namaste, according to Yogi Aadii Palkhivala, means “the belief that there is a divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another.” I believe that the heart chakra is also where Aloha dwells. Anusara yoga classes give students the experience of practicing Aloha each time we do postures while we focus on opening our hearts and become aware of the beauty in our surroundings. By discovering this new way to frequently experience Aloha while doing yoga postures, we can have the unique experience of feeling the opening of our hearts. Aloha is also about fulfilling our deepest heartfelt dreams. When we meditate by turning inward to be intuitively guided to what we most love in our lives, we will have learned one of the best lessons Aloha offers. Lynda M. Wright, LCSW has over 30 years experience working with individuals, couples and families in following their dreams. She has offices in Wailuku and Kula. Most health insurances are accepted. Opening To Aloha
By Shalandra Abbey Over the past 20-plus years I have enjoyed the incredible gift of calling Hawaii home. It has been fun to listen to stories relating the first Aloha experience. A dear friend explains, “My first opening to understanding Aloha was when a young girl was having a difficult time tying her shoe. She merely looked up at me and said, ‘Auntie, can you help?’ My heart melted as I received my first taste of the oneness of Aloha and the first true understanding of ohana.” Recently I discovered from another friend that the State of Hawaii actually has a law on the books called the Aloha Spirit Law. It says, in part: The Aloha Spirit is the coordination of mind and heart within each person. It brings each person to the Self. Each person must think and emote good feelings to others. In the contemplation and presence of the life force, Aloha, the following unuhi laula loa (free translation) may be used: A - Akahai, meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness; L - Lokahi, meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony; O – `Olu`olu, meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness; H – Ha`aha`a, meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty; A – Ahonui, meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance.
These are traits of character that express the charm, warmth and sincerity of Hawaii’s people. It was the working philosophy of native Hawaiians and was presented as a gift to the people of Hawaii. Aloha is more than a word of greeting or farewell or a salutation. Aloha means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return. Share our law. Live the Aloha Spirit, wherever you choose to call home! Shalandra Abbey is a full-time Reiki Master. She is the author of Living a Life of Reiki and a member of The Reiki Alliance. What I Have Learned From Aloha By Rhonda Felix Often times learning is something that we see in retrospect. As I look back on my nearly 40 years living on Maui, lessons on the “breath of life” have been ever-present and unfolding in a very organic way. These lessons always move me forward, showing me my own ability to “give and receive” to life. Both parts are necessary for the complete circle. How do we touch life with our own presence? How do we step into the true meaning of Aloha? The most direct route is with an attitude of gratitude. We all know that gratitude is easy when the outer picture looks good! But the tricky part is being able to have this gratitude no matter what the outer situation may look like. Faith knows that no matter what the outer picture may show, we know in our hearts that all is in divine right order. And for this, we have a grateful heart. This is not so easy when the job, relationship, or dream has slipped away. At these times, experiencing Aloha or gratitude may be challenging at best. So we support ourselves with people who hold this for us, and not people who fuel the fire. This is when we can practice staying centered with the place within us that is stable and centered. Yes, learning is something we see in retrospect. It is interesting how today we may understand what we thought we could never accept. We see the gift and how our lives have been gently guided in spite of ourselves. This is one of the gifts of Aloha.

Appreciating Our Emotions
By Sheridan K. Hailley To free and move our emotional energy through our bodies is a tremendous gift. When in motion, emotions energize and empower us, and promote optimal health and wellbeing. They open our hearts and move us into a place of deeper connection with ourselves and others. Thus, they are an integral part of our unfolding as human beings and our expansion as spiritual beings. Our historical and cultural conditioning may challenge us at times to connect honestly with our emotions. We may find ourselves avoiding them by being frantically busy or externalizing our feelings and assigning blame. Viewing emotions simply as qualities of energy can be helpful in overcoming inhibitive conditioning. We are freed to breathe out old, mind-cluttering beliefs about emotions, and allow the natural flow of emotional energy. When freed, this energy naturally moves us towards wholeness and expansion. The Five Elements Theory, which forms the basis of traditional Eastern medicines, helps us appreciate our emotions from an energy perspective. Earth element, experienced as depression when mobilized, provides inner strength and stability. Fire, experienced as anger in its healthy motion, brings about alchemical transformation. Air element, when contracted, has a quality of fear. When breathed open, air provides the essential space for the flow of all other elemental energies. Sadness, anger and fear are an integral part of the dynamic interplay of energies in and around us, constantly expanding, contracting and seeking movement towards wholeness. Let’s affirm and celebrate our emotional energy this moment: “I honor each emotion with gentle compassion as it flows through me. This energy in motion brings tremendous gifts for myself and for others. I celebrate this amazing miracle of unfolding and expansion!” Sheridan K. Hailley, MA, CPT facilitates gentle methods for opening emotional flow, safely finding your own expression and inner connection, and drinking from the deep nourishing wellspring of wholeness. She offers professional counseling and ayurvedic energy healing. Call 808.344.4410 or visit www.soulfirecounseling.com.

Aloha, And Welcome Home! By Dr. DreamingBear Baraka Kanaan In a world of oneness, there is no such thing as inequality. Like a lush for love, I always keep a keg of stars on tap and I will often pour out a glass of galaxies for wayward travelers, as the sky squeezes the last drops of liquid light from the tender smile of the sun. Right now I am spoon feeding you baby bites of full-on-ness, as we surf the sparkling waves along this ocean of understanding. I see you’ve dropped your smile again; let Dr. DreamingBear dust it off for you and re-adorn that masterpiece of magnificence upon the soft throbbing innocence of this world’s joy. I’ve been told by more than one recently mended heart that when you pull back the blushing red curtain of your lips to reveal that choir of teeth all dressed in white robes, and dancing so playfully upon the altar of your tongue, it gives the shattered soul a reason to rise and be whole again! A new day is dawning within you as a living opportunity to be happy and carefree. Today I laid naked under the sky and said, “kiss me, every part; let my most sacred vulnerable essence be consumed completely in the light.” I’ve never felt more alive than I do right now, in this very moment, as these words are reaching into your soft inner core to embrace something beautiful within you which has been neglected for so long that you forgot you were once such an intimate lover with the one who created every kind of kiss upon each precious heart in all dimensions. It doesn’t matter what the rest of the world thinks of you or

of how much pain you’ve managed to store up in that dark, secret, unnameable place. This sea of tears will soon turn into sweet living waters once you take a drink of the milk and honey of your own capacity for re-creation. If you embrace me in this potency, our heartbeats will become our own private drum circle and you will soon discover in the secret chambers of this heart a golden enchanted door that only you can enter. Upon it is written a jeweled inscription that reads: There is always peace when we learn to love ourselves and each other without shame. If you knock, wanting to come inside, the door will open to reveal that you already are and always have been softly dreaming within me. Stop being so hard on yourself. Maybe you’re not perfect and perhaps you never will be. But even if you were, someone somewhere in this world would still find a so-called good reason to criticize your greatness with words of being small. So let your heart be wild and free, and come fly with me upon the phoenix wings. The Infinite Light
By Rabbi Sholom Schusterman We all have our own set of challenges. Whether they are physical challenges or financial challenges, emotional challenges or spiritual challenges, as a Rabbi, I can tell you that there is always a solution. Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812), the founder of Chabad and the author of the Tanya (the central text of Chabad philosophy), suggested that every person seek a relationship with G-d, based on Kabalistic writings and principles. How does one allow and bring the infinite light of G-d into his or her own environment and surroundings? We allow the infinite light of G-d into our daily lives by doing mitzvahs. Mitzvahs are commandments that connect us to G-d. Many mitzvahs can be done to connect us to G-d. G-d gave the entire Torah (teaching) to the Jewish people as their law. They therefore have a special responsibility, with special commandments, to be the priesthood of the world—a “light unto the nations.” And they have a responsibility to draw down the infinite light. What about the rest of the world? What is G-d’s will for them? For the average person, there are seven universal Mitzvos of Noah. This is where the righteous gentile can bring down the infinite light by doing the will of G-d. The Seven Mitzvos of Noah are a sacred inheritance for all of humanity. Every person on the face of the earth can use this as the basis of his or her spiritual journey, and live a moral and pragmatic life. What are the Seven Mitzvos of Noah? 1. Acknowledge that there is only one G-d who is infinite and supreme above all things. Do not replace that supreme being with finite idols, be it yourself or other beings. This command includes such acts as prayer, study and meditation. 2. Respect the creator. As frustrated and angry as you may be, do not vent it by cursing your maker. 3. Respect human life. Every human being is an entire world. To save a life is to save that entire world. To destroy a life is to destroy an entire world. To help others live is a corollary of this principle. 4. Respect the institution of marriage. Marriage is a most divine act. The marriage of a man and a woman is a reflection of the oneness of G-d and His creation. Disloyalty in marriage is an assault on that oneness. 5. Respect the rights and property of others. Be honest in all of your business dealings. By relying on G-d rather than on our own conniving, we express our trust in Him as the provider of life. 6. Respect G-d’s creatures. At first, man was forbidden to consume meat. After the Great Flood, he was permitted, but with a warning: Do not cause unnecessary suffering to any creature. 7. Maintain justice. Justice is G-d’s business, but we are given the charge to lay down necessary laws and enforce them whenever we can. When we right the wrongs of society, we act as partners in sustaining the creation. If enough of us begin to incorporate these laws into our lives, we will see a different world sooner than we can imagine, with much light and fewer challenges.

Embrace Community And Ecstasy At Sufi Camp By Kevin Cannella For 24 years, a beautiful community has come together for a week-long Sufi Camp on Maui. The purpose of these gatherings is to experience the divine and to send out vibrational frequencies of peace to all beings. The camp takes place each year in May and October. Thus far I have attended four camps (two in 2011 and two in 2012). The Sufi path is experiential, and the camps reflect this. It is a path of the heart, and the camps reflect this, too. The Dances of Universal Peace and “Zikr” are the central practices. The literal translation of the word “Zikr” is “remembrance”; we remember that there exists no reality, except the reality of love. These practices involve a group standing in a circle with musicians in the center. Music is played, songs are sung, and dances are led.
The dances are very simple. Most involve the group holding hands and swaying gently in one direction. Once or twice during each camp, these dances lead me to a sober, ultra-ecstatic experience of the divine, which I can only describe as a feeling of infinite mercy and infinite gratitude. Life changing? Certainly. With these dances as the focal point, the camp is augmented with meditation and yoga in the mornings, the beauty of Maui, waterfalls and natural pool swims, esoteric teachings, delicious and mostly organic food, and a truly beautiful, accepting and loving sangha (community). These camps have, quite easily, been the best four weeks of my life. The spirit is epitomized in everyone and everything! For more information on the upcoming Fall Sufi Camp, October 4-11 at Camp Keanae on Maui, visit www.sufishawaii.org.

When Healing Means Leaving
By Amrita Grace The diagnosis of breast cancer arrived on March 13th. I submitted myself to the Maui health care system with numerous appointments, scattered between four or five locations. Though I liked most of the doctors, it felt disjointed and incoherent. No one was really guiding me towards a particular treatment. My in-laws encouraged me to come to the mainland, but I was determined to stay home on Maui. That’s where the healing happens, right? Then I met with an angel disguised as a plastic surgeon. He gave me all of my options, including the ones that were not available anywhere in Hawaii. He recommended having a mastectomy and figuring out reconstruction later. Months later. Perhaps then I would be ready to leave Maui for the next surgery. I could not face the idea of not having breasts for months. Within hours, the way was clear. The next day I told my husband, “We’re going to Minneapolis! I want the reconstruction that uses my own belly fat instead of implants, and I want it all in one surgery.” Ten days later, we were on a plane. I received the best of care at a top rated breast cancer center. Everything was organized, synchronized, and flowed beautifully with little effort on my part. The 14-hour surgery included a double mastectomy and a hip-to-hip incision in my lower abdomen where the fat and blood vessels were removed and transplanted to make new breasts. The first 24 hours were critical…would the transplanted tissue be accepted? It was, and I bounced back with extraordinary vigor. After four weeks, I was given the green light to return home. I’m gratified by the wisdom of my decision to leave home for my surgery and thrilled to return home to Mama Maui to continue my healing. Keys To Grateful Living
By Amorah St. John When you’re down and out, lift up your head and shout “Mahalo!” Nothing shifts the energy faster than a large dose of gratitude. If you’re sick or your lover left you, it’s even more important to be grateful than when things are going your way. Anytime life hands you lemons, it’s your chance to mix up some surprisingly good lemonade. By expanding our view of unwelcome situations, we can see the truth of the matter, the lessons to be learned, the possibilities they present, and even the perfection in them. We can’t know what lies down this precarious path called life, but we can choose to be grateful for whatever comes our way. Just the tiniest “trim tab” can turn great ocean voyagers in a new direction. Just the smallest change in perception can open up new roads with new vistas. How do you get to higher ground? By thinking thoughts and feeling the energy of gratitude. Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk and revered spiritual teacher, is considered to be the father of the Gratitude Movement (a worldwide phenomena dedicated to what Brother David calls “grateful living”). His philosophy is simple. Every moment is an opportunity to be grateful. It’s an invitation to open our hearts and minds to the miraculous potential of every second of every day. Millions of people have found peace and solace in Brother David’s state-of-the-art website, www.gratefulness.org. You can even light a virtual candle and offer a prayer of gratitude online. Let’s express our appreciation for what is right now. Because we live on Maui, we have a home court advantage. Paradise and grateful living: a winning combination. Amorah St. John is grateful for two whole years now on magical Maui. She is the author of The Adventures of the Light Sisters, Sierra’s Journey Home, and a spiritual screenplay, The Call.
