When we bought this publication last summer we had one main goal in mind, and the first priority was not making money for ourselves; it was to ‘become the stick that stirs the Maui drink.’ Let me explain. Maui is unique in many ways, but not immune from the world economy. Many times people ‘wait for things to happen’ instead of ‘making things happen’ and we wanted to focus on the latter. Some companies wait to promote their businesses until the economy improves, which is backwards. That is like buying a race horse and saying “When you win some races I will feed and nourish you,” but that logic does prevail in some areas, including Maui. Some people and businesses refuse to spend any money until the economy improves, and that is just not the way it works. During the last few months we have hired local staff and salespeople on Maui, doubled our circulation to nearly half a million copies annually, including over 150,000 copies of our magazine into Maui News into local hotel rooms each year. We have sponsored golf tournaments, including a booth at the PGA Hyundai Tournament of Champions, promoted charities, employed people and hired many local Maui businesses to distribute this publication year-round. Directly and indirectly we have pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Maui economy. Our company is based on Maui and we plan to be here for many years to come. There are some truly exciting changes coming to Maui and we want to be ‘the stick that helps stir the drink’ we all call Maui. We won’t announce these changes yet, for even our competitors read Maui Real Estate Guide, but you will be able to view property on Maui like never before, all through our magazine, website and other venues. We have doubled the number of copies each issue and applaud the Realtors and other businesses that promote themselves in this magazine. This is the time for readers and advertisers alike to also ‘become a stick’ and not rely on the drink itself to drive the economic bus. Good for those who take action, shame on those that sit and wait. Maui is very undervalued right now and the ‘smart money’ sees that already. Invest, expand, explore new opportunities, buy a home or business, visit more often, move others here, hire staff, promote and advertise yourself and your company, but help ‘drive the bus,’ not just sit and watch as this bus drives the Maui economy forward.
