It seems there are readers (and even some advertisers) that feel that readership of a magazine is going to dwindle when compared to other forms of advertising, such as those accessed via the Internet. That same logic would have you believe that once instant coffee was invented the death of the slow-brewed coffee would be close at hand. Not so! How many people go into Starbucks or any other coffee store and order “instant coffee to go?” I know of no one! The popularity of Kona coffee on the Big Island is at an all-time high, with some coffee now fetching $35 a pound and more, long after ‘instant coffee’ was supposed to put brewed coffee out of business. According to the 2013 Ipsos Affluent Survey USA the “Affluent” population (Affluents are defined as adults aged 18+ living in households with at least $100,000 in annual household income) has increased in size and financial resources. There are now over 62 million Affluents in the U.S. alone, with hundreds of millions more worldwide. The study, also known as the Mendelsohn Affluent Survey, in 51 countries reports, “ 81% of Affluents read at least one of the 142 reported print publications (135 magazines and 7 national newspapers); coupled with the growth of the Affluent population, the number of Affluents who read a
print publication rose to more than 50 million.” Furthermore, according to writer Wayne Friedman, reporting in U.S. Media Spend which tracks media spending, “In August magazines gained 10% for the month, up 15% for the year!” Think about that, magazine spending is UP 15% for the year. We have seen many clients combine their Internet, mobile devices AND print advertising into one comprehensive bundle, for the viewing convenience of the reader. One long-term advertiser is Rebecca Keliihoomalu, Real Estate Broker and Senior Vice-President of MacArthur Sotheby’s International Realty on the Big Island. She adds, “We run hundreds of thousands of print ads annually in our firm and millions of impressions with Sotheby’s International Realty annually”.
