The 2011 Legend is the ultimate fine-tuned side-shore wave sail. There is an even softer feel and flawless transition from driving power to smooth release while wave riding. The leech tension is very progressive from clew to head which creates responsive reactions while still maintaining excellent flex. This year we complemented the existing sizes with a new 2.9 and 3.5 designed to satisfy the desires of those who sail in the world’s windiest locations and the feedback from early users has been excellent.
The exciting Ghost-XT range has expanded to include sizes from 4.7 to 6.7. Evolved from Legend development, the Ghost-XT incorporates similar shaping adapted to the extensive use of ultra-light and strong Technora™ scrim. The Ghost-XT offers the best in high-tech, light weight performance that you can’t imagine until you sail one.
The Global returns in 2011 as our powerhouse wave sail for those who like a bit more juice and back hand input. Peter Volwater has described them as “perfect… don’t change a thing”, so refinements are size specific to bring them all into line with his review. The sail is tougher than ever with a 100% x-ply construction to suit the demands of tough on-shore conditions. Small details such as the new brass wheeled pulleys, tough anti-chafe materials, and additional Kevlar™ reinforcements make this a perfect sail for a wide variety of windsurfing locations.
The Locos got lots of love this year inspired by our work with the amazing Taty Frans, the Bonaire freestyle wizard and PWA leader. His desire for a new 4.0 and 4.4 design developed on a 370 mast has added two very useful high wind sizes to this already efficient lineup of sails that are ready for flying and flipping in total control. The other sizes also got plenty of attention. The slightly flatter upper profile and more progressive leech tension are in perfect sync for the modern freestyle maneuvers that are made possible by having this type of balance and control. Just ask Taty and he will tell you these new sails make him fly!
The popular Switch free-ride range is for sailors who love to go fast but also like the kind of handling and balance that can enhance more radical moves like looping, spocks, duck jibes, and jumps. These are the most under-appreciated designs in our collection and they deserve a try to find out just how good they are for all around fun. Tube/rod battens and stable film construction make the shorter boom/higher clew outline feel race ready, with speed to burn. This is the most versatile RAF sail available and is suitable for everything except waves. When you Switch, you will get the reward.
Aloha reminds everyone of things pleasant and inviting, the joy of recognition and a wonderful way of life. Our Aloha for 2011 continues with all those elements and more. The super light five batten Aloha can be your good friend with amazing performance and value of function. Over the years it has always continued to evolve into a well tested and highly developed simple RAF. Art Szpunar continues his twist of the graphic and is enjoying this freedom to express himself on the clear surface. Adding a third color to the scheme makes the design jump right out at you and in keeping with all the MauiSails we continue to add more XPly to pop the other colors and provide more durability.
When you are Pursuing something, naturally you want to catch it, or go faster. Magazine testing of the Pursuit and lots of feedback from sailors put this simple RAF slalom outline at the level of fastest in its class. Perfectly even shape distribution produces a smooth transition from the fullness of the lower sections to the flatter upper sections. The relatively low total luff curve values are responsible for the simple tuning and easy rigging. Downhaul tension measured with our load cell can be half of what otherwise may be expected so there is less work and it’s easier to find your ‘sweet spot’. A deep luff cutout dimension makes attaching the boom a breeze.
The 2011 Titan-GS is totally new and ready to rig cams off. The perfect sail for fast free riding and Formula Experience racing, the Titan-GS now has the sleeve width necessary to be able to add extra pressure to the cams to stabilize draft, but the use of flexible material makes the rotation soft and easy. The desirable handling character and fluid maneuvering that is already well known will work well for Formula Experience racers who will find the new slightly flatter profile aloft matches perfectly with the deeper sections around the boom for acceleration and top speed control.
The 2011 MauiSails Slalom and Formula Windsurfing race sails, the TR-7 and TR-7 XT, are well worth the work it takes to change a number of design characteristics successfully, and create a racing tool that is the best ever. With specific goals in mind, Artur Szpunar has creatively shifted outlines down through the sizes while still maintaining our well known soft feel and easy handling. The rider’s requests for improved stability when powered, and increased range and glide thru lulls drove these changes, and the results have been consistently successful. Crowded starts and mark roundings in gusty conditions demand maximum rig efficiency, and the TR-7 delivers as desired. AN INCREASE IN THE LOWER SLEEVE WIDTH allows additional cam pressure and more tension for smoothing the luff area. Using flexible materials in specific areas of the sleeve, and TechnoraT in the film portion for even loading, has made it possible to keep smooth rotation regardless of the added pressure. Deeper sections around and under the boom develop useful power that is never a struggle while in a jibe or tacking.
THE SHORTENED LUFFS AND THE SHIFT TO SHORTER MASTS brings the power lower, naturally. Refinements in body shaping combined with a flattening of the middle of the luff curve have allowed us to create a very smooth and progressive leech twist that aligns the sails profile for optimum efficiency and light handling. This makes the control while at speed correct for stable acceleration with a reserve of power.
A MODERATE RECESSED CLEW (Yes, we did it. but our own way) keeps the handling sweet, even with the added chord length of the lower aspect ratio and ‘hides’ the boom tail away nicely without affecting rigging ease. It’s a no-fuss solution that allows quick boom attachment without weighty or fragile closure systems. Rigging is simple with cams off, and the sail stays smooth and clean while inserting or removing the mast. TO KEEP WEIGHT LOW, ALL BATTEN POCKETS ARE NOW TECHNORATM, as well as all sleeve film laminate inserts. Graphic elements that only add weight are limited, and details of finish are as always, minimal in the spirit of maxed out racing.
TR-7 IS DESIGNED, DEVELOPED, AND TESTED WITH THE SRS CARBON RACE MASTS. Over the past year we have done a number of things to make these masts the best you can have for our sails, both in performance and durability. Each mast is now measured for bend, cataloged to the serial number, and bent under compression to at least 70cm, before packaging and shipping. Small changes to the material orientation and quantity in select areas have resulted in added resiliency and strength, while maintaining the desired bend character.
TO MAKE THE TR-7 RIG COMPLETE, A MAUISAILS FULL CARBON RACE BOOM IS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST THERE IS. Incredible stiffness, durability, and perfect function make these bright blue booms the choice for getting the maximum out of any sail. Unique bends and tube tapers, a proprietary head design that adds stiffness to the connection point with maximum bearing surface and light pressure closure, make the transfer of power instant and dependable. THE TR-7 RANGE CAN DO THE WHOLE GAMUT OF RACING TASKS, from speed sailing with the smaller sizes, slalom in the middle of the range, and Formula racing to the size limit. TR-7 XT is the absolute best for the larger Slalom sails and Formula Windsurfing sizes. The additional cost is more than justified by the enhanced handling and low end performance that comes with the use of this dense Technora(tm) laminate. We are confident this year is going to be the best ever and expect you will find that as well. Maybe just a little bit of seventh heaven on the water.

MAST MODEL
By integrating the ferrule structure into the lay-up of the lower section of the mast, and by building on specialized two-piece mandrels using high modulus prepreg carbon, we are able to favorably influence the weight/strength ratio. Controlled high temperature curing guarantees maximum durability. Use of the proper mast (Synergy Rig System) produces a steady, light feeling rig that comes from having the foil at the correct angle of attack, regardless of the changing pressure on the rig. You feel the entire leech, and have the impression the sail is easily slipping through the air mass, scooping as much power as you can handle, and all in perfect balance.
