Around The World of Kevin

T

he month of August was not too much different for Kevin than the last few months. It was filled with travel and good times. Kevin finally made it back to Maui after being gone for two and a half months on the road doing competitions and promotions for Starboard and Maui Sails. A slight bad luck with the excess baggage sent him cringing on his way home from London with a 1650 dollar tab racked up.

"I have been having a great time this month. A little time at home and getting your clothes out of the bag for a bit is really a great feeling. I just got back from the promo in Holland and that was great fun. There was tons of young kids out there having a great time and really starting to sail well. It was great to see. It looks like we will have another generation of windsurfers coming up", said Kevin

After being home for one night Kevin hit the water with all of the new Maui Sails getting photos and having a lot of fun on the water. Ten days on Maui and then right back on the plane heading to Holland for "the Mission". This was a promotional event that linked racing with fun and good times both on and off of the water.

B

y now a lot of you will start to see all of the MauiSails lines of sails out in the market. 7 lines of sails have now been produced along with the MauiSails SRS mast range. Full details of the sails are now on the website along with action shots recently taken in Maui by The TEAM. I just came from a wedding in Curacao which was pretty great to see because I never been to a wedding or see one happen. And how funny and scary it was to see two person bound together and kiss in front of many people and telling each other I will be yours forever through the good times and bad times. The wedding party was crazy people dancing and having the time of their life, the decoration was really nice and the food was great.

Taty went back to Formula

I

t's been pretty light winds here back in Bonaire. So that's when I started to go back on my Formula gear and train with some local guys who also have Formula gear here in Bonaire. We sailed from 9 am to 4 pm most days, so the training is good for my overall conditioning. Of course we stop for lunch and drinks. There also was two local events which I won them both on my Formula gear. The most thing that I was doing was just hangout at the beach Swimming a lot and also do some knee boarding with my girlfriend and my brother Chcoco.

Well now I am back on Bonaire and ready to get back on my Formula gear and train for the Bonaire regatta. This is a International regatta and we get lots of guys coming down from different part of the Caribbean so it's going to be fun and really and I am excited to participate in this race. Hope everybody is having fun. If you are not then you aren't on a Maui sails, hahaha.

Phil won US Nationals

B

etween traveling to Spain for a PWA meeting for 3 days and then back to Hoodriver for the US Nationals, Phil as usual had a pretty hectic month. The most fun was at the US Nationals in Hoodriver which Phil won both the Formula and slalom in the Masters division. Before the event Phil conducted a two day racing clinic, which 12 very keen racers attended. This was based on theory but also practical training sessions. "We got very lucky with the wind, most of the guys and gals were exhausted by the strong winds for two days", said Phil. Then onto the Nationals. Hoodriver was the scene of some epic racing conditions as the US Nationals concluded in Hoodriver in classic formula and slalom racing conditions. For two days the winds had blown over 20 knots and 6 rounds of slalom were completed. Phil McGain dominated his Masters division taking 5 bullets out of the 6 rounds completed, with local hero Bruce Peterson putting on a good show in placing second, and Bill Weir from the Bay area in third. In the Formula racing Phil also dominated his division by winning all races and placing 4th overall in the fleet. Devon Boulon won the open division with Jesper Vesterstrom in second and Sam Ireland in third.

"A great regatta with 6 rounds of slalom and 8 formula races completed in the 5 days. Hoodriver was setup with a classic wind pattern for the 3 days and the race crew took advantage of that. I'm really happy with the way I sailed and my equipment performed as expected. I loved the slalom here, it's always good to race against high class fleet, it brings the best out in me and my gear". MauiSails also had some great exposure by providing MS-2 7.5 and 8.5 for Charter. Nothing but smiling faces from the guys using these rigs. Then it was back to Maui. A few days rest hanging out with my family and some time for the garden. Then Kev got back from Canaries and we started the MauiSails Photoshoot. August is such an easy time of the year to get beautiful photo's it's always sunny and windy. We got some great shots on all of the sails, so we are ready to start on the brochure now.

One of the best Augusts

B

arry had a great July, one of the best ever. He got to spend some time at the lake and take some breaths. The kids battle it out in uncharacteristic light wind. Last one standing wins!

Maui, Hawaiian Islands

There was a wonderful confluence of weather and the event. Good wind going in, a hot weather river-raftable break in between, and blasting going out. Barry blasted out too, heading for San Francisco to fete his mom's 90th birthday, and his own 59th. She had organized a day on board the Voyager, a 75' power yacht with thirty of her best friends and family. Lots of cousins and siblings made for rounds of staged photographs too. Film actor Brian Thompson fresh from the bridge of starship Voyager to the deck of the Voyager on the bay, all in one year.

Most of the world sails like this more often than not. Kids and moms love it here. The wind finally stops and the mind does too.

And right after that a quick ride back up to the U.S. Nationals. What a great scene. M.C. Doc, and Glo Doolittle keep the proceedings light and keep the crowd informed.

Back to Hood river and the Formula Experience Worlds. This was a race and gathering to make you feel like there is real hope for the sport. With a fleet of mostly teenagers, and lots of charter equipment, it made for challenging racing for them all. I loved hearing all the beach talk. There was so much enthusiasm for just being in it, trying to figure it out. Lots of the sailors had to figure out gear as well as try to be competitive. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel‌ tune tune tune.

The organization ran a good series of races, Phil did some well received clinics, and then he raced the pants off it, winning the Masters Slalom, and giving all the young guys in the open fleet some run for their money. www.mauisails.com | 04

I would have to say that although the racing is still influenced by gear choice, and that there will always be advantages with one board type versus another, at least the format of FE keeps a realistic limit on how spending more builds a lead. And the competition to make faster, lighter sails, and better boards that meet the criterion will only make for batter sailing for the most people. There was plenty to do when Barry got back. Sails need work, and competitions are tough on gear. When we get around to the next issue, there will be more on the new kid's rigs that are being developed around Monty and Baker Grant. Baker is already making good use of his limited collection of gear by winning his division in the NavMan Maui Speed Trials a couple weeks ago, and Monty's new 2.5 Rebel has changed his sailing. He just didn't imagine he could use a sail that big, but now it's all he needs.

Dorota's new Hair Style

D

orota recovered from back injury and got out on the water beginning of the month to do Polish National Championships run in Leba. Feeling well on the water and taking advantage of her favorite high wind conditions. Dorota won the slalom discipline on TR1 5.1 combined with Starboard Sonic 100l. There was 10 women and 54 men who enetered the event. In the men's fleet it was Steve Allen (Aus) and Pawel Hlavaty (POL) who dominated. Due to dangerous, stormy weather the formula event was moved to the 3rd week of September to be raced in another location on Polish cost - Rewa.

During the making of the movie Dorota was using TR1 5.9 and Starboard Sonic 90l. Dorota's plan for the next months is to prepare to World Cup in Sylt and Almannarre and the final event of the year December's World Championships in Melbourne of Australia. Dorota photos by Magda Korczycka.
