Kevin still on the road
T
his month for Kevin was still filled with traveling. Kevin went to Baja Mexico to catch an epic south swell with his brother and long time Baja Guru Brian Casario and then off to Sylt for the final PWA event of the year. "I had a pretty good month. I managed to finally get some great wave sailing in which is something that I was really looking forward to. We got some great waves on Maui and then managed to score some really good conditions in Baja. Then it was off to Sylt for a long week of racing, a couple heats of waves, and some good parties in the night time. I was really disappointed in my performance in Sylt. For the racing I had the wrong boards for the Slalom 42 and for the waves, I just didn't get into my rhythm. I will be back next year stronger than ever".

How is Phil doing
B
ack on the road to china and Sri Lanka to check sail production and work on booms. I caught our third production run of the wave sails down in the factory and was able to double check all details. I have to say everything looked good and product now is being delivered on time. We are getting a wave or second round orders from importers, which is great and positive that our sails are being welcomed into the market. The carbon boom project is now starting to draw in on it's final stages. With the grip design and a few fitting details being finalized we are close to starting production. This product will be one of the finest booms on the market, we are expecting big things and reaction when we finally hit the stores.
Back to Maui and back into sailing mode. Swells are starting to hit the Northshore of Maui in September and we even had a big south swell which is late in the season. The south shore was going off for a day and those who were able to get into La Perouse bay got a killer swell direction and size. We got some more photo's of the wave sails at Hookipa during a nice North East swell and were able to enjoy the new Legends and Globals and really put them through a good test.

Barry and I were able to enjoy a nice afternoon on his catamaran Hula girl, and get out into some strong trade winds one Sunday afternoon. Now Kev and I are over in Germany at Sylt for the PWA World Cup. I remember back in 1985 when I attended my first World Cup Sylt, it was such a disaster for me, I think I placed 36th in racing and swore I would never come back again. But now after more than 20 years attending World Cups I can't wait for it to start and feel the adrenalin rush of getting on the race course in front of the Sylt crowds. We actually just finished the event I placed 12th in Slalom 42. More reports on the website.
gusty. Sailing with him again was really good because we didn't sail much together for a long time because he was gone right after the King of the Caribbean and since then we hadn't sail with each other and sailing with him is another feeling. Well during our sessions we pretty much pushed the limit doing: double spocks diablo, flat water goiters, flat water air chachos, and some other new freestyle moves that are still have to be completed - but we are getting there.

he first week of the month there was great conditions here on Bonaire sailing most of the days with my 5.0 legend and starboard freesex 90. Tonky and I pretty much sailed together on the other side of Bonaire in the open sea where the wind is always much stronger then in Sorobon bay but more
On the second week we had just one day that was really windy and I sailed with the 4.5 legend. Tonky, Kiri some other friends and I went straight to the waves, where we had some high jumps and there were also nice waves to rip on. we sailed for like 3 hours in the waves and after that we went back to Sorobon bay where Elvis Martinus wanted us to do freestyle moves so that he can film us. I think he got more then an hour www.mauisails.com | 03

Sara Chita : Working and Training
T
he past month I have been windsurfing and training a lot, literally everyday with my new MauiSails Legends which work great for me. They have a lot of power and control which I need in the gusty Aruba winds! I train at the Huts with my brother and friends and we were blessed to have so much wind this summer for so long. We wanted some more adventure to our windsurfing so with the great winds we were able to find alot of new spots which was a lot of fun to do as well. But when you're having fun time goes fast....eventually the summer ended and school started again...so it's like if my homeworks not finished I don't go windsurfing. Now that the hurricane season has started there will be less wind which makes it really hot here on Aruba. I'll be practicing lightwind freestyle a lot now. Today is election day in Aruba and hope it turns out good because that could decide if the new hotel will be built or not at our windsurfing spot.
of freestyle from most of the Bonaire dudes and me.
In 2 weeks my brother and I will be going to Bonaire to practice with all of the Bonaire guys including my MauiSails teamate Taty so I'm really looking forward to that!
When the Hurricane Katrina hit NOLA, The wind here in Bonaire died completely and it is really light and extremely hot here in the Caribbean, I spent most of my days cruising around on my Formula gear, spending time with my girlfriend and my dog buddy , I also went fishing couple of times, swim was pretty much the best thing to do and kneeboard was really fun to do. Well I hope the best for all the people that are homeless in the USA and just to let you know that I am praying for you guys and keep mind positive I guess that's the only thing that can help you survive at this tragic moment.

Barry - Back to School
S
eptember takes us back to school and August was good for getting ready for that.
During August, we all had some varied travel and I started off with the Formula Experience World Championships in Hood River. I touched on this in the last newsletter, but considering what a nice event it was, we just have to talk about it again. There were good winds and no wind, plenty of racing and a good organization who kept everything running smooth. I'm sure that the young people, especially the groups from northern Europe and Texas, got more than enough racing AND fun to make them want to do it again. Which brings me to the school part of the title. We spent some good time during the second half of the month working on a collection of school and kids designs that are just today arriving as samples on the barge. These new designs, which we have named the Inspire, are part of the effort to have equipment that is easy to learn with and that can even progress the sailor straight into 'normal' sails. Through the size range, the outlines and battens reflect the probable average user, and fit perfectly with the task of learning the sport. Our goal is to get this kind of equipment in front of as many teenagers as possible, because when you can actually

get your teenagers succeeding and having fun, they won't want to stop. Here on Maui there is a big surge in the number of young people getting into sailing. Of course, you'd think, living on Maui and all, that windsurfing should be a natural. But it's not like that unless the whole family sails. And what's more boring than going and doing something with your parents? So we can't be seen as kooky or uncool, and the thing we are doing must translate almost instantly into fun (think playstation). This is possibly more challenging than winning a world cup. Winning the heart and mind of a teenager. And speaking of teenagers, and kids, we are getting a pretty good group going here, with Skyler Haywood (Fred's son), Ashley Baxter (Connor's sister), Baker Grant, and Monty Grant (he's eight), all getting on the water almost every day. Baker and Skyler are into the Maui Speed Challenge and doing real well. And Monty is already putting his new Rebel sails to work as well. This is Floras Lake, Oregon with the normal traffic. Half the sailors are young kids. This is what windsurfing is like in most places. People just love o go sailing and hang out together. I am happy that the sport seems to be doing something for these folks, and we want to be right in the middle of that if possible. Aloha, Barry www.mauisails.com | 05
