Kevin. Living the dream to the fullest. December was a nice month for me. It had some variety in the conditions, some good, some not so good, a little bit of surfing, wave sailing, slalom sailing and hanging out with family and friends. I did have one bad day just before Christmas which really bummed me out. I managed to get a lot of camera stuff stolen from my truck. I have a really long lens that was very expensive get ripped off from my truck which wasn’t fun at all. They also managed to take my ipod, sunglasses, video camera, and cell phone leaving me pretty bummed out for Christmas once again. Last years was not much better, but oh well you take the good with the bad. Expensive day that is for sure. The good part of it was testing out the TR-3’s which are really starting to take off. The 8.4 and 9.2 absolutely killed the sails from last year and so this really makes me feel a bit more confident going into next season. There is a nice short video on the mauisails.com site which is soon to be updated with some more info and video. I just need to get a new video camera first! Finally it was nice to see the year come to a close. 2006 was one of the best years of my life. So much fun was had, meeting new people, accomplishing more than I ever thought was possible and living my dream to the fullest. I hope that everyone can do the same in their life as well. Build it and they will come. See you on the water. Kevin.
Everything is possible for Sarah in ’07. On Friday December 1st I participated at the unveiling of the new calendar of a local insurance company as I am one of the figures being depicted on the calendar in the month of July ’07. The following day at noon I flew together with my brother to Bonaire to attend the release of dasher’s film of Starboard pro kids video. I sailed with Taty and used the 5.2 Loco. The Christmas holiday was great because I got to stay in Aruba and it has been windy everyday since my vacation started! I sailed everyday for hours. Many of my windsurfing friends came from abroad and made it even more fun to enjoy the wind sea and sun. We also tried out some other spots to practice in varying conditions. I also received a sports award from the government of Aruba for my windsurfing achievements. A lot of people here in Aruba are rooting for me and want me to do my best this year. I’ve trained a lot of new moves. I started practicing Bob, switch stance flaka ( almost!!), double spock (I do spock into Vulcan) , goiter ( I love the move!). Chachoo!
You know what? I read my old monthly of January of last year. There I was saying that the loops were getting better!! It’s one year later and I’m STILL saying that! Haha Oh well… Right now I feel like I can do anything! I mean 2 years ago I never thought that I would even try the move chachoo, now I almost got it. I never even thought I would come close to practicing bob. But I am. So my motto for this year is : Everything is possible. Happy New Year! Make it all happen! Sarah-Quita.

Taty. Going for the Win. December is the month I like the most maybe it’s because the food you get to eat or it’s just the return of the wind on Bonaire, Well I guess it’s the wind. December started of with low wind during the first 10 days so that gave me time to start working on my house. Building a house costs a lot of $$ and also a lot of time, but 10 days was enough to put some final touches on the house so that we could start with put on concrete cement slab. Well the work surface is now done so hopefully I can start winning next year to get some cash so that I can start building walls. For the last 2 weeks I have been sailing some days with the Loco 5.2 and some days with the 5.0 Legend, both these sails are fantastic. I thank MauiSails for such great handling and maneuverable sails, they are just what I need to pull off my big moves. I had a great year and I am really happy with the ways things went for me and for the MauiSails company. I want to congratulate Kevin for winning the PWA WAVE world champion and Sarah Quita for doing such a great job in Fuerteventura, Barry & Phil you guys are the machine behind MauiSails like they say hard work pays off and you guys gave us all great sails and the team made MAUISAILS top 3 in the PWA. So to be such a small company and being top 3 I can say this is the best early present Santa gave MauiSails. Maybe I am not telling you much on what I have been doing this month but I am just writing what’s on my mind, this is the best way I can tell you what I want and what’s inside my head. Well on the 29th I will fly to Curacao (Curacao is a 15minute flight from Bonaire) to participate in an end of the year race which will be a long distance race of 60km, 30km downwind and 30km upwind, this race will be taking place on the 30th of December in Curacao.. I never compete in this race before and never heard of it until last month when I received and invitation from one of a windsurfer in Curacao who will also compete in this event. The guy told me that for the last 5 or 6 years he compete in this event but always finish behind the yachts and I told him how come is that? and he response it’s because the organizer and race director give the yachts one and half hours head start then the windsurfer start, so it’s kind of an unfair race but that’s the way it is BUT if a windsurfer win this race it will mean a lot for the windsurfers in Curacao and sad disappointed faces for the yachts and organizers.
So I am going to compete this year and I am looking forward to winning this race. I have my Formula starboard 160 and MauiSails TR-2 9.5 ready and I am going for the win. Happy holidays to everyone. Aloha, Taty.

Phil the Runner.
December for Barry.
We kicked off December with continued TR-3 testing and some great wave sailing. Finally got the sleeves nice and clean on the TR-3 and rotation is hands free now. We expect to finalize production here in the next week so keep a look out for them on the website.
December 2006. This was an interesting month for me. New things came and grew, and some passed. It was a time of reflection and consideration and the occasion for the first travel i have done for awhile. Unfortunately it was a sad time, as the travel took me to freezing cold Butte, Montana, for the funeral and memorial for my dad, Ed Spanier. I felt so fortunate that i had the experience of our European winter tour to gauge what clothing i might want in a place that was between fiteen below and fifteen above zero Fahreneit. Who says going to Poland in the winter can’t be good for you? My Dad’s ceremony was very touching. He was World War II combat veteran and there was an Honor Guard and flag ceremony, taps, and a gun salute. The day was perfect sunshine, with snow and ice all around. He’ll be missed, but well remembered by all those who knew him for all his kind works helping people to recover from addictions.
I completed my first running Marathon December 10th, competing in the Honolulu Marathon and completing the 26.2 mile course in 4 hours, 12 minutes, 57 seconds. I finished placed 2800th out of 28,000 competitors, so not bad for my first race. Generally it was a great experience, I now know what they mean by “runners high”. My legs were sore for a few days afterwards, but that is to be expected after “hitting the wall” at mile 23 and then pushing onto the finish line with no fuel left in the tank. I can’t wait for the next race when I plan to beat my current time and shoot for under 4 hours. Christmas in Hawaii is always so special not only because it’s hot but because there’s nobody on the water even on the best days at Hookipa. We have had trade winds all the way through December this year so we had no shortage of wind. Looking forward to 2007. Aloha, Phil.
Here’s the new Inspires working at Tinho’s place in Florida.
All around that, there has been good testing of the TR-3 prototypes and solid continuing work forward on the Inspire. Working with Tinho Dornellas is great, and i expect that the functionality and specific issues for schools and learning are becoming very refined. And working with Tinho is a lot of fun. We have along standing relationship of cooperation and development together, and it’s great to know that he is involved and committed to making these new sails relfect his considerable experience with getting people into enjoying the sport faster and easier. And speaking of faster and easier, that’s what has been happening with the TR-3 from what the testing is showing us. Making the sleeves wider had made rigging much less hard on the sail, and the tension resolution in the sleeves has made the rotation super nice. All this enhances what is proving to be a major shift in thinking about twist development that is producing a sail that retains our favorite feel, with a completely new twist character that makes sailing at speed easier.

Here I am dreaming about being in Sweden, waiting to get a ride to the airport to go to Maui.
In the last weeks, I have been getting to anticipate traveling next year with complete MauiSails accessories. It’s exciting to think about a trip with The Team guys, heading for a big contest, and getting into the groove of winning it all next year. So i had to ‘suit up’ and get a photo of what the well dressed traveler from here would look like getting ready to head for the land of winter. All decked out with our new boom bag, combo quiver bag, and back pack, we would would certainly look better than we did the first time around last January.
The items are designed with functional simplicity and heavy use in mind, and based on years of the most demanding experience traveling for competitions all over the world. I’m sure you will appreciate and enjoy them too. Wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year, and plenty of wind. Aloha, Barry
