Not windy March.
Maui, Hawaiian Islands
March for Phil.
The month of March had to be one of the worst months for sailing on Maui that I have been around here for. We have wave sailed probably only 4 times this month and it is really starting to get old. Not that I am complaining but gosh. pretty bad.
March in Maui is always a surprise and it looks like the trades winds forgot to kick into full gear this March because they backed off towards the end of the month. However we have been working on the wave sails a bunch and getting some ok days at Hookipa.
Anyhow, we had some good times for slalom sailing, working on MauiSails off the water stuff and getting all the laundry and house jobs done. I actually have been moving from my main house into a smaller house and doing some concrete work and all the stuff that I manage to put off throughout the year has now been taken care of. I also checked the weather forecast and decided to get off the rock over to Mamouth California for a snowboarding trip which I haven’t done for years.
The first part of March was really windy with East winds, so we decided to head over to a deserted spot called Waiehu. I really love this spot because there are no other people sailing and the conditions are very challenging. It’s directly onshore, so you can ride and jump both tacks at the same time.
It was the first time I hadn’t been on a snowboard in 12 years so it was pretty fun to get on the mountain and rip up some freshly laid powder snow. It was just like riding a big day at Jaws, well close anyway, without the fear. I managed to get through it without getting hurt so that was good. Other than that not too much else to report.
Kev and I have been spending time on the slalom equipment when we had some lighter wind days, getting everything tuned and tested for the coming PWA slalom events later in the year. For me these are some of the best sailing days as well because the water is so smooth and again we are mostly the only one’s on the water, especially when we do crazy stuff like launch our race gear off Hookipa when the swell is big. You have to time it right to get out or you will be swimming
Aloha, Kevin.
During the no wind days I have continued on my training program and I would say at the moment I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for over 10 years and it’s feels great.
