Not windy March.
Maui, Hawaiian Islands
March for Phil.
The month of March had to be one of the worst months for sailing on Maui that I have been around here for. We have wave sailed probably only 4 times this month and it is really starting to get old. Not that I am complaining but gosh. pretty bad.
March in Maui is always a surprise and it looks like the trades winds forgot to kick into full gear this March because they backed off towards the end of the month. However we have been working on the wave sails a bunch and getting some ok days at Hookipa.
Anyhow, we had some good times for slalom sailing, working on MauiSails off the water stuff and getting all the laundry and house jobs done. I actually have been moving from my main house into a smaller house and doing some concrete work and all the stuff that I manage to put off throughout the year has now been taken care of. I also checked the weather forecast and decided to get off the rock over to Mamouth California for a snowboarding trip which I haven’t done for years.
The first part of March was really windy with East winds, so we decided to head over to a deserted spot called Waiehu. I really love this spot because there are no other people sailing and the conditions are very challenging. It’s directly onshore, so you can ride and jump both tacks at the same time.
It was the first time I hadn’t been on a snowboard in 12 years so it was pretty fun to get on the mountain and rip up some freshly laid powder snow. It was just like riding a big day at Jaws, well close anyway, without the fear. I managed to get through it without getting hurt so that was good. Other than that not too much else to report.
Kev and I have been spending time on the slalom equipment when we had some lighter wind days, getting everything tuned and tested for the coming PWA slalom events later in the year. For me these are some of the best sailing days as well because the water is so smooth and again we are mostly the only one’s on the water, especially when we do crazy stuff like launch our race gear off Hookipa when the swell is big. You have to time it right to get out or you will be swimming
Aloha, Kevin.
During the no wind days I have continued on my training program and I would say at the moment I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for over 10 years and it’s feels great.

back in with all your race gear completely broken up. Good thing we were patient and waited for a break in the sets. The last week of March the wind really quit on us, so it’s been back to the bike and early morning beach runs. Life on Maui is good either way, it’s just a matter of mind over matter and find stuff to do. Aloha, Phil.
Sarah goes Maui. This month I haven’t windsurfed that much, but the wind was great! When this month started I got dengue…some little mosquito that bites you… I thought it was measles but it wasn’t so here I was lying in bed and the wind was blowing! My brother was having so much fun. After I got better didn’t have much energy for almost 2 weeks and my resistance was low. The days that I did windsurf were great! There were little rolling swells and I was almost jumping air flakas off them with some other guys. For the first time a few days ago I saw other people sailing with MauiSails here in Aruba! I was pleasantly surprised to see one with a Global and I think the other guy had a Switch. Last week it was my Dad’s 50th birthday and we celebrated it BIG and a lot of family came from abroad. Guess What?! This Friday the 31st I’m flying to Maui! for the Star Board photo shoot. I’m going to stay there for 15 days (15 days no school ha ha) with both of my parents and brother. I’m so excited, I’ll meet the rest of the MauiSails Team.
I’m going to catch some waves and practice hard on Maui. I’m going to try to do all the moves I can’t practice here in Aruba, Back loop, front loop, tabletop, airchachoo!! hehe we’ll see about that one. Allright everyone. Surf’s up! Sarah-Quita

Great windy March for Taty. The Month of March was yet another great windy month here on Bonaire, The wind kept on blowing and new moves are still coming up. The sails I used this month was Legend 4.5, 5.0 and 5.3 with my Starboard 94 Flare. There was three days that we had great wave conditions on the south side of the island, so Kiri, Choco and I was the first three sailors to catch those wave and ride them for hours. It was three great days and the all three of us had a blast. Right when I start to enjoy the wave riding the waves got really small on the fourth day but the wind kept on blowing, so freestyle was right back on the schedule, I was pretty much sailing 5 days straight with my Legend 4.5 and I have to say this sail size is one of the sizes I love the most. It’s light, really powerful and easy to handle and I can used to do wave sailing and even do all of the freestyle moves without feeling of mistake. Well I came up with some pretty nice moves from sailing 4.5 for 5 days. These are the following freestyle moves: punch into flaka diablo, triple flaka, the funnel into goiter. Well the wind is good here on the island and I have to go out and train more. Take care all, Taty NB-9

Snowy March for Dennis. March wasn’t to good to me. Had loads of work to do, and the weather didn’t really help to go sailing. We even had 20cm snow!!! That’s quite a difference as I’ve just came back from Maui. Also my girlfriend was gone for one month. She went to train freestyle at Bonaire, and I just picked her up from the airport. Nicely tanned :P Now we are straight of to Alped D’Huez were we gonna spend a week in the snow. I already prepared a snowboard, were I put a base plate on so I can go and try to do some snow surfing with a MauiSails Legend 4.5. Hopefully we can shoot some nice footage(photos and video) for the next Maui Monthly! Another good thing for me in March was that I signed up with a new sponsor. Oxbow is gonna support me for the next 2 years. I’m really pleased with the deal, because the brand is just fantastic! So, for now I’d say: Take care! I’m off to the powder ;) Aloha, Dennis
El Nuevo Importador de MauiSails. In March, MauiSails extended our importers list by welcoming B3 to our group. Located in Tarifa, Spain, they will be MauiSails representative in this beautiful country of wind and waves. Tarifa is one of the windiest places in Spain with conditions for windsurfing available almost the whole year. B3 is a nine person company having their distributors all over the mainland of Spain, and also on Canaries Islands. They plan to build a professional team of riders which will represent the brand well on the water. Good luck and hasta luego.

March for Barry. March. Usually windy and wild in Hawaii, this one has been no exception. Rain, rain, rain, has been the major feature, and the island of Kau’ai is almost washing away. Maui has had more than its share too, making my home a smelly mold hole, waiting for the sun to come back and the trades to blow again. The sailing has been pretty good, but rain is the word. This time of year we see the near final production samples with the details, colors, and new graphic looks. The flow of the graphic designs is following the themes of our first MauiSails to be seen in many years, and we think that they will find a lot of appreciation. We have listened to the various sources in our world, and expect people will receive all the ideas with lots of enthusiasm. Getting a ’new’ business of the ground in a small market is a very challenging task. It has pushed us to be clever and innovative in every respect. The work I have been doing with our webmaster and graphic artist has been some of the most fun in years, and I can’t wait to see the response to one of our ideas that you should see shortly. It will be called "Barry’s Corner", and will tell my own history leading up to the founding of MauiSails in 1978, as well as a regular installment of the history of windsurfing through my own early experiences in the years when everything was so new and exciting. There will be lots of old pictures and anecdotes about people, and I think it can truly make everyone appreciate why we chose to call ourselves MauiSails again. The photo is of me working and playing off my deck and it will find its way into the story. So when you see the light go on in Barry’s Corner, check it out. Bogo and I have had a lot of fun with this. Aloha, Barry
