Taty may in May. I have been in Europe now for a month and 1 week and I still have two more months to go.

I departed from Bonaire on the 24th of April to Austria for the PWA freestyle event. During the event the wind was not strong enough to finish a single elimination, that’s sad, but there was alot of people during the event to meet the stars.

The event finished on the 6th of May and with no results.

On the 7th of May Tonky, Kevin Mevissen and I flew to Dusseldorf where Kevin lives and he showed us where he started windsurfing. I couldn’t believe how good this windsurfing spot is, with a private beach and no more then 10 people sailing. The same day we arrived we went straight to the beach and sailed for 3 hours with my 5.2m Mauisail and my 2007 99 Liter Flare starboard.

During my time in Holland I have been to the STARBOARD PRO KIDS event at Brouwersdam which was successful.

The wind was light but I saw some kids doing spocks, Flaka, spinloops and spock540’s. We did some heats and later signed autographs and picture with the kids. It was fun to be there and the organizers did a great job.

On the 24th of May was my birthday and I’m now 22 years old. I received alot of phone calls and some presents that day which was really nice.

Hi everyone!

This month there wasn’t much hope for wind until half way through. The wind kicked in for almost two weeks in a row.

The best part was that one week there wouldn’t be any school on Thursday and Friday , soooo we had a loong weekend.....of WINDSURFING!!!

It was great! I sailed five days in a row, practicing shove it and actually only shove it. I fell in love with that move! Haha.

I just recently started giving classes to kids on Saturday’s and I’m really enjoying it!

Right now I’m practicing for the Aruba Hi-winds competition, which will take place on the 28th of June till July 3rd. There will be Slalom and long distance racing during the week and in the weekend we will have freestyle. There will also be Kitesurfing.

After that I’ll be off to the canaries! I registered for Pozo this time! I’m really excited about it, see if I can handle those nuclear winds...

Good month but no passport for Kevin.

The month of May slipped away for me. I had some great training days here on Maui and even some great waves. Maui is not usually the best place for waves in the month of May but this one was really fun. It seemed like the swells just kept rolling in and that was great training for my first big event of the season in Guincho Portugal. I even got to surf at one of my favorite waves in the world, Honoulua Bay. This place when it is good is really, really fun and so that was an added treat for the month.

Now as I speak I am sitting waiting for a new passport to be issued. After waiting for two months to get mine renewed, countless phone calls to see where it was, they told me to fly to Oahu and get in line.. Two more hours and we will see if I actually make it to Portugal at all!

Despite picking up the training schedule, I have been having a great time here on Maui. Spending time with friends and family has been really great. Rich Foster, Robby Swift and a bunch of friends went sailing on the other side of the island in Kaupo which was really cool. Phil Month of May. What another spectacular month on Maui!!! We finalized the new wave designs and they are looking really good. Good job to Art and Barry for being such pro’s and making our job easier on the water.

Of course the sailing has been special again with some great wave days at Hookipa and lots of slalom training for the US Open. For some reason the best days at Hookipa were the least crowded all year. I remember one afternoon specifically when KP and myself hit it around 3pm and nobody was out.

We rigged 5.7’s and 5.8’s and had an epic session in head high waves and wind filled in all the way to the beach. Not big surf, but we had wave after wave and were totally exhausted at the end of the session. This is Hookipa in May. Kanaha has been filled with tourist windsurfers from all over the World, so it’s always good to get down there and mix it in with the crowd and do some PR. Most of the days I would set bouys inside the reef and get into starts and mark roundings.

Some days KP and I would go at it hard as if it was the Canary World Cups all over again.

This is what really pumps the heart up and gets you ready to race!!.

Finally at the end of the month I headed down to Texas for the US Open to see how my preparation really was. I came out winning the pro mens slalom and finished 5th in the Formula on a borrowed board. It was a great event, we had good wind and of course good Texan hospitality.

Now back to Maui for the summer slalom series and to focus on the MauiSails business.

May Days weren’t Play Days.

During May, we are usually in the last stages of the testing and development of our wave and freestyle sails. This year we were especially blessed with great surf and good wind for day after day, so we could really see what was going on with all sizes. The mornings were spent updating designs and the afternoons were great for testing and observing. Kev took a lot of good pictures which you will start to see soon, and Phil was getting in better and better shape for racing and life. It’s amazing how a small weight loss can get you planing sooner.

Just think how we spend so much to save those grams in high tech equipment, and then we haul around those extra kilos right on our own body for free!

My big accomplishment for May was to get the new Volvo diesel motor in the Hula Girl and to get it all running right.

It was quite a job, and it had to be done in the middle of the night so we could use the fish hoist in the harbor to lift it in, and top get the old one out. We picked a Sunday night and had the whole place to ourselves. Of course, there aren’t many people in Lahaina harbor at midnight, so there was no crowds. We cut a big hole in the deck of the port hull just to make it easy. Now we have to repair the deck, but at least we didn’t have to wrestle the engine in through the boat. And we have two engines now so the summer cruising will be much more fun.

good racing results, and also in the recent races in Texas. I can see from the mark rounding practice that goes on every afternoon at Kanaha, that we have managed to improve the acceleration out of the turns, and to get the low end margin better. It is obvious to me as an observer that there is a real advantage with the TR-2 in those respects.

One afternoon I was cruising to Kanaha going past Hookipa.

It was very light, and there was a pretty little wave. There were only a half dozen guys out, including KP on a new Global 6.2. The sail looked so good I had to stop and watch (even though I was late). Kev was so cruising! He was just powering around, taking any wave he wanted, doing snappy cutbacks, little aerials, and generally being perfectly balanced.

Once he surfed a bit with his hands off the rig. That was fun to see. When I called him that night to tell him I had seen him, he said that he thought the 6.2 Global might just be the best one in the range this year. Good news for Florida and all the other places where a good big sail will expand your TOW. If you start working on it now, maybe you can get to the sound barrier like this jet in the picture I don’t know what this really has to do with sails, but it sure is cool to see what happens when you break the sound barrier.

May has been GOOOOOOD!!!

It has bin terrible weather down here, but I’ve sailed a lot in windy conditions. The month began in Portugal, were i competed in the Europeans. The conditions down there weren’t so good because of the very very light winds.

Anyhow, my overall result was quite satisfying and i even had chance for a better ranking if i was sharper. But very happy with the 8th place overall.Showing that everything is working well in light winds.

When I came back to Holland the weather was cold, but we had lots of days with strong winds. I did a lot of slalom and speed sailing at the Grevelingen, and had some good speeds on my GPS. I sailed even with the TR-2 5.1, and was way overpowered! The GPS display told me 79,4kmph but I couldn’t read it out on my pc because something is broken down unfortunately... Next time I’ll be sure I have a good GPS with me.

After this we had the Dutch nationals were i did good business for the overall title. I won 5 out of 9 races in the Formula discipline, and in the slalom I won the first 5 heats in very strong conditions. I sailed with the TR-2 6.6 and everything was working perfectly! It gave me a great feeling that I did so good in slalom after all the practice I had with Phil on Maui. It seems that it all worked out well.

The Maui Race Series is coming.

Lately I’ve been training for the Maui Race Series that is coming up. I’ve been pretty busy with school, but thank god I’m finally done. The Maui Race Series is going to be pretty exciting this year, since I think that I actually have a chance. Now that its summer I’m going to try to be down the beach everyday, so that I can win my heats! I just got my first COVER! It was the most exciting thing ever! I can’t believe that I actually got one, it was one of the biggest surprise of my life. I think the cover was a good boost of confidence for starting off this year.

Anyhow, now the weather is still bad, but hopefully it gets better in the next few days. This was May for Me! Lets see what June has to tell, find out next month!
