MauiSails brings you good wishes for a special time of year December 23 of 2007 is the 29th anniversary of the idea that began in an old warehouse and became MauiSails. This time of year is special all over the world and is celebrated in many ways, from trees and Santas, to menorah, to surfing and barbecues with our southern partners. For some it is a summer vacation time, and some will be dreaming of sailing while keeping warm in snow covered houses.

Martin : speed record attempt in Southend Starting from January 15th 2008 an outright speed record attempt will be held at Southend. Last month training sessions showed this venue has got world record potential and with Finian and Björn taking part it might become a legendary race. Together with a bunch of eager amateurs they will be fighting for the honour to become the first windsurfers to officially break 50 over 500 metres. The venue is also great to try and break the standing Nautical Mile record since the super fast strip is long enough to cover that distance as well. The standing Nautical Mile record is set by the spectacular trimaran “Hydroptere”: http://tinyurl.com/2dxvpm The “Driven by Wind” event is set up by Dave White. Apart from the official video timing, for the first time standings can be followed real time because of a live GPS connection. www.gps-speedsurfing.com is supporting the event and

we hope everyone with the need for speed will follow the efforts of the riders in this historical event. On a personal note it’s clear my peak speed has given me a lot of confidence. Last month I have been focussing on finetuning the gear and with the help of Boogie, Ron van den Berg, the Naish and Maui Sails crew I hope to be able to be competitive and fight for the honours with the big names in speedsurfing. I wish you all a happy new year. May the winds be with you! Martin van Meurs

Artur : Always a year ahead

The last month is always the best month

With the TR-4’s done and sent to production, our focus now turns to the 2009 wavesails. This is my personal, favourite time of year as I always get excited to work on the new designs as well as test them on the water during our excellent, winter conditions.

December has been a great month for us all. It began with Martin’s fifty knot afternoon at The Ray. Having that happen while visiting Japan again after more than ten years absence, and being able to pass on that news to our new Japanese distribution group, Iron Led, made it even sweeter.

With the 2009 Legend, we are continuing the pursuit and refinement of the ideal wave sail characteristics. The design focus is on making the sails feel feather light in the hands while surfing a wave, but also maintain excellent speed, power and stability when heading out.

From Japan to China was an easy jump and I was able to see the new production underway and work on some details of the TR-4 and get some sails ready to take back to Japan on my return. We built a special sail in a super strong and light material as an experiment, and it turned out perfect the first time, an encouraging sign.Phil arrived just as I left and was finalizing all the TR-4 to his approval and measuring them all for registration for the PWA racing rules.

In terms of construction, we are incorporating some refined, structural reinforcements into the new panel layouts. We are analyzing any potential failure situations and making sure that the sails will withstand these severe circumstances. Our goal is to improve durability while maintaining lightweight because over-weight sails do not perform. We also have some exciting, new materials for 2009. The graphics have been re-styled to incorporate the new materials and structural reinforcements. Looking forward to a progressive New Year and many, great sailing sessions. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

I went back to Japan and was met by the guys again and we went to one of the good beaches to rig sails I brought back with me, and then did an interview with one of the Japanese magazines. We are very excited to have a chance to be successful in a place where they are out sailing in big numbers in the middle of winter. I was so glad I brought my heavy jacket, wool hat, and gloves, or standing around Omaezaki would not have been so much fun. Back in Hawaii, we closed out the year with the beginnings of the wave sail development, and a big surge of orders for lots of different things MauiSails. I am so very thankful this year for all the wonderful support and great responses to our efforts that bring the MauiSails feeling and quality to appreciative folks all over the world. I want to wish everyone a very happy New Year and offer all my good wishes for a lot of good wind and sunshine in the future. Thank you and aloha Barry Spanier. www.mauisails.com | 0

Kevin doesn’t like december December is always one of the most stressful months for me. It is not only a time when most all your contracts run out for the year and it is time to negotiate all of them again but also a time when you have to be stressing out about what to get you family and friends for Christmas. So for this reason I don’t like December too much, however this one was not so bad. For Christmas this year our family’s gift to each other was not to have to stress out about what we had to give each other for Christmas and to just give our love and appreciation, and not give any presents to each other. I for one loved this idea and was the best pre Christmas I have ever had!! Other than that there has been really not that great of sailing going on here on Maui. The weather has been blistery and windy but just not that great for windsurfing. It has been super gusty and rainy, not like the normal steady tradewinds that we normally get here year round. We are now on to 2008 and I think this is going to be another great year. Thanks for all your support over the last season and look forward to bigger and better year in 2008.

Taty : New year, New challenges As we approach the end of another year and the begining of a new year, trouble just seems to be there. The tragic loss of a little kid is what my family is going thru at the moment. Even though it hurts so much, we have to live with it. As for next year I will be moving to another sail brand. I would like to take this time to thank Kevin, Barry, Phil, Bogo, Art, and all the rest of the Mauisails team for helping me thru out the years... Kevin I have to move forward, but you always have been there for me when I needed you and I want to thank you a lot. You are a good person.. thank you for always showing me love, and understanding what was going thru my mind. As for the whole MauiSails team at the loft, thank you for the great sails and I wish you all the best with the brand in the years to come. Barry, thank you for everything, it’s good to have someone like you to talk and listen too.

See you on the water. Kevin. This is me saying goodbye. Wish you all a happy new year. Taty Frans NB-9 www.mauisails.com | 0

Surf Magazine wave sails test In January issue of German SURF magazine you can find wave sails test including 4.7 Legend and 5.4 Global. What is more the reviews are positive so go to kiosk or nearest surf shop for copy of magazine. Here are conclusions of both sails review.

4.7 Legend - A radical wave sail for big waves and pretentious spots. But for wave surfers, who do not go to the waves first time, also quite useful when surfing in the East sea. 5.4 Global - The raciest wave sail of the group. Soft suppressed with 100% “OFF, like powerful side-shore sail.
