Solid Day’s in Baja In the month of March my friends and I rolled down to Punta San Carlos, Baja. Hosted by Solosports, myself along with Kevin McGillvray and Tyson Poor held two weeks of wavecamps with clients from all over North America. And luckily for all of us, San Carlos showed it’s true colors with two weeks of solid winds and sick south swells that brought up to mast high waves. US Team Riders Ingrid Larouche and Matt Case were also with me, and we were all blown away with the performance of the Legends in the perfect side-off down-the-line conditions. San Carlos is possibly one of the best wavesailing destinations in the world, with waves that provide training grounds for not only novice wavesailors but also more challenging waves that have attracted pro’s for years. If you’re thinking of making the trip (which you should!), check out the solosports website at www.solosports.net. Be sure to keep your eyes out for the Van in San Francisco and the Delta for the first couple weeks of May as we pass through on the way up to the Gorge for the remainder of the summer! I’m tardy in writing about my blessed month of April which started off in the UK riding horses, four-wheelers, and visiting some of the key windsurf shops. I was really taken care of by the Jordan family, my friends who visit Cabo Verde often, as well as John and Dawn Pooley....Thanks you guys!! Next was a blast back to Cabo Verde for a shower and a nap before me and the family headed off to Maui, where we had some sick slalom action with the whole MauiSails team and lots of testing that was combined with a good photoshoot with an epic Hookipa day. I watched as my brother, Mark, continues to blow everybody’s mind with his “mutant” that only he in the whole world can do. My family’s stay in Maui was sweet but short before a two day stint in Boston, where we briefly visited east coast legend Dan Weiss. Then off to Cabo Verde for another nap and a shower before kissing my wife and son goodbye for close to month on the road with my first stop in Munich. There the boys at Surftools got some new sticks and took great care of me... thanks Peter. Another highlight in Munich was hanging with my boy, Christian, who owns K1X shoes and clothing brand. Check it out, it’s sick. We had some good swine (hopefully not mad pig), and me and heir to the Surftools’ throne, Severin, bolted up to Podersdorf. The place has been sunny and windy the three days here so far. I got to laugh at myself in the freestyle event and watch all the young rippers, awestruck, and have had some great testing with the MauiSails team, who arrived early... Stay tuned ! Josh Angulo CV-1

Getting ready for
The month of April was spent on Maui, my favourite place this time of the year. There was only a few days without wind; usually the palm trees we’re moving beautifully under the blue skies - with winds one day up to 45-50 knots! We got to play with the new ‘10 prototype sails at Hookipa for the photo shoot and also windsurfed at Kihei, Camp one, Upper Kanaha and Sugar Cove. The Wave sails were already real nice, and it was great to have just a little more power but they still feel light and easy. It was good fun to sail with all these brand new sails which improved from last year and together with the rest of the team in a variety of conditions. Apart from the photo shoot I spent a lot of time on all the TR5 sails and figuring out how to tune them and go faster. Usually I have slightly less downhaul (approx -1 cm) than what’s written on the sail, probably because I weigh 93 kg’s and need to get all the power out of the sails. The measurements prove to be pretty much spot on on all the sails. They remain very stable in the strongest of wind using every gust to accelerate quick and easy. For the PWA I am registering the 9,2/8,4/7,6/7,0/6,3 and 5,5 and all the sails feel great across the range. After Maui I was in Holland for a few days sailing, spending time with friends, and working on my gear getting organized for my next trips in South of

MauiSails Boom Front End A good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast. MauiSails frontend fits 37mm or 40mm diameter carbon tubes. Will fit most booms on the market. You can buy it in MauiSails online store at www.mauisails.com

Photoshot and training on Maui This month in Maui was very exciting for all of us !! We had the photoshoot in the beginning of the month and I had lots of fun with the freeride and freerace sails. They are very easy to use. The last week for me in Maui was intense. Gonzalo and I were going everyday to Kihei to test the sails before the first slalom event in Austria. We had many hours of sailing in all kind of conditions. I wanted to make sure of the best sizes for me to compete in the slalom events this year. The TR-5’s have very good wind range, so with the sizes I chose (5.5 6.3 7.0 7.6 8.4 9.2). I’m sure I’ll be covered for all kinds of wind, from the windy Canaries to the light winds of Austria and Sylt. Now I’m here at LA airport. I have to wait 12 hours here to get a 11 hours flight to London and after Vienna !!! See you on the water, Gabriel Browne BRA-50

Getting my gear ready April... I’ve spent the first two weeks back home in Argentina just organising my year and not sailing much so i was dying to go back to Maui. I left to Maui and arrived mid April to tune my slalom gear. Most of the guys of the team were on Maui training hard. I teamed up with Gabriel to tune my stuff and we manage to put many hours in. We sailed a lot on Kihei on 7.0, 7.6 and 8.4, and a couple of days on 6.3. I managed to decide the range I am going choose for the World Cup this year. It was very hard because you have to prepare a lot of combinations for the different locations we will attend, and everything seemed to be working very good.
"... My favorites TR-5’s end up being the 8.4, 7.0 and the 6.3. ..." So I ended up going for the 5.9 and 6.3 for Fuerte strong winds, then 7.0, 7.6 and 8.4 for middle stuff and the 9.2 just in case we get some extremely light wind stuff in Austria, Korea, Costa Brava, and Sylt. My favorites end up being the 8.4, 7.0 and the 6.3. Now i am in Holland training on some lakes to get ready for Podersdorf, Austria that starts next week. Best Regards, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel, ARG-3.

Racing and freestyleing on Caribbean April Fool’s Day: funny way to start the month full of Jokes on the radio and on the internet etc etc.. but it’s what it is... just a day of foolishness. Did a slalom event in Curacao and won that event with ease using my Starboard 101 and TR-5 6.6 and 7.6. After I did the long distance in march for Erwun Muller, then I went to won this event in Curacao. I got to have a lot of media and newspaper coverage all over in Curacao and Bonaire. This brings big image and opportunity for the windsurf sport, in Curacao especially. The TR-5... When I first received these sails I was pretty amazed at how these sails work I remember trying the TR-4 7.6 and didn’t like it so much I couldn’t find the perfect tuning and harness setting and the sail was too full or wasn’t working for me in any conditions. Then I got the TR-5 and you just have to rig it to the spec on the sail, so that to me was a very helpful and the sails just work great. I am really liking these TR-5 sails, still the best and Handling is super easy even in gusty conditions. Here I am finally where I belong... the great team and with the best sails built and Design by Art, Phil, and Barry..
After signing back with MauiSails I have the opportunity to give my personal feedback on the Loco sails and have been testing the 2010 Loco’s. I am going to be representing the Loco and to compete with them, and so is the Steven and most of the other Dutch MauiSails riders. As a freestyler you need a sail that works in every condition from Canaries to Germany, Holland, and even in the Caribbean, so that’s why I demand to have Loco’s 4.0 and 4.4. With a full set of Loco you will have the most out of your freestyle board and yourself without losing any feeling of your Loco from having to go down to a Legend or Global when the wind gets too strong. We have now been working mostly on getting

the Loco flatter in the mid section to the top battens. With a higher foot cut this will make the ducking and the new freestyle moves easier and it will also give you a much lighter feeling in your hands while cruising or sailing. I have had a lot of time freestyle training on the water, and the Locos are perfect freestyle sails. I very much enjoy them a lot each day and they never upset me. Been having some time in between to go cliff jumping and having some great funny moments with my friends. This is it, and now I am going to stop writing and go back on the water. Windsurfing, windsurfing dudes and dudettes.. See you on the water. Taty Frans NB-9

What can you expect in the 2010 wave sails? April is photo shoot month so the Maui beaches have been busy with athletes, designers, photographers and helicopters from most of the major brands in windsurfing. All the craziness aside, it was great to have almost the entire MauiSails team on island at the same time. In addition to the photo and marketing stuff it was an excellent opportunity to get more feedback on the new designs. I had some excellent wave sail testing sessions at Hookipa with Josh, Peter and Phil. Decent waves and a variety of wind conditions allowed us to get a wide range of the new 2010 prototype sails on the water. We systematically tested the different versions of each sail size back to back, allowing us to precisely pinpoint the shaping adjustments that were giving the best results. I was happy to hear the positive feed back coming from our top wave guys. You can never hear the adjective “siiick” used too often when it comes to a wave sail test report. It’s great when you can relate your own experience with using the sails daily to the team rider input and everyone ends up on the same page with the desired performance characteristics. So what can you expect in the 2010 wave sails? We have continued in the direction of soft feel, light handling with good power. The shaping has been leaned out a bit to make the sails release flawlessly when wave riding. The twist is very even and progressive as you move up the leech making for maximum efficiency at both the high and low ends of the wind range. All the sails have exciting new graphics and definitely stand out on the water in all four of the available colour combos. We also have some improved durability features including tougher material on the sleeve abrasion reinforcements. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

No fool’s this April What a fantastic month! I’d call it the gathering time. Every spot of water was jammed with pros from all over the world, and half the day helicopter madness for photoshoots made you wish they would just find another place to disturb the peace and spend the outrageous sums that were obviously being poured out to get those pics. Meanwhile, Bogo was getting creative and keeping the footprint down and still coming up with some interesting angles to show off the 2010s. With Gabriel, Josh, Gonzalo, and Peter here, there was plenty of energy to burn up the relentless winds. Day after day it blew solid twenty-five. With bouys out, the guys could have their own simulated starts and first roundings to tune up the whole kit. Fins were tested fairly and in a cooperative way that made me smile when they had successful results. Exocet, Starboard, F2, Angulo, all with slightly different characters, needing slightly different sail/fin combos. The effort was paying off in realized performance for each guy, and they all found their best settings and fins knowing they had already been working against competitive other board brands. Often there were other sail brand pros out there too, and then the pacing took on some reality. Sometimes it looked like a PWA finals, with Finian,

Antoine, Kevin, and Ross all running at the same time. They had a chance to check up, now the rest will be up to them. At the end of the session, sadly minus Gonzalo who was in Argentina, the group gathered at my house for a feed and congratulations for all the hard work. Photoshooting can be fun, but not preferrable to being able to do what you want or need to do otherwise. We have a load of gratitude and visualize lots of finals for all four and more. Too bad Taty couldn’t make it to fill in the Loco shooting in some strong wind. Maybe next year. Missed that smile. I took lots of shots during the time but most are boring views for sail shape checking, or doing mast comparisons. Here are a few that show some good action and the happy faces after dinner on our deck. I’m looking forward to more gatherings like this in the future. The vibe was very special regardless of what they might make out of the tour. It was a feeling of being part of a good thing. Aloha Barry Spanier

A time to reflect and get down to business Ok, the past month has been busy on Maui with super winds, super team riders and tones of time on the water tuning. I had a conversation with Josh one day and it was very simple about racing and what it takes. “Get around the race course, efficiently, eliminate mistakes and go with what you know in your equipment”. So the lesson in the end is yes take the time to tune, practice around the bouys, test fins, footstrap placement, masts, but at the end of the day you have to get down to business and get the job done on the race course when it really matters. In the heat of the battle when the best sailors in the world are around you, you have to stay calm, be aware, be comfortable, breath and be efficient, the sailors which do this are the one’s who win races and become champions.

I know our team members have worked hard and done the work, now it’s time to perform, usually the people who work hard get rewarded. The 2009 season is about to begin for the slalom sailors and it’s exciting to sit back and watch to see how our boys do this season. Good luck to Peter, Josh, Gabriel and Gonzalo over there in Austria, you’ve put in the work know take care of business. Aloha, Phil McGain
