Steven Van Broeckhoven proved to be one of the top contenders of PWA in Fuerteventura, after secutring fourth place. In Lanzarote he already scored 6th place. Gollito Estredo won the event. Tonky Frans of Bonaire sailed brilliant in second place and Marcillio Browne of Brasil was 3rd. Steven was the best scoring European. Taty Frans was also on fire and the heats between Steven and Taty were very close with a resail in their first equal scoring heat in the double elimination. Both MauiSails sailors showed the world their obvious talents and they proved to be the best freestyle embassadors for MauiSails worldwide. It feels like this month has been a pretty long one. After coming back from the Canaries I sat back for awhile and thought about everything my life; windsurfing, and everything in general.
I believe that I have the potential and the power to get back on top. I believe that everything takes time to build and make perfection. Training, practice, and the believeness to want something are the key to be success full and achieve what you have work for. Nothing comes easy and if you don’t want something bad enough then you don’t deserve it. My life is okay at the moment. I am more true to myself and I have more trust in myself. I went back to where I started and looked on what went wrong for the last three years and now I am trying to "FIND THE POWER" like Matt told me. I have learned a lot in the last four weeks and I have no doubt in what I want to do. The next PWA event in Sylt is coming soon with just three weeks left and I am heading to Germany with Tonky and Kiri for the last PWA freestyle event of the year. I have been really pushing my freestyle moves, practicing more on my weak moves, the ones I know that can make me be on top and just be more clean in the landing. The Loco’s are pretty much helping me a lot. In early planing and during the moves they’re so easy so light and very controlled in every aspect. I REALLY am happy with the new 2010 Loco’s and now that we have also include the 4.0 and 4.4 this help me cover all the wind conditions throughout out my event travel places. I know I have nothing to complain, and all I can say that the sails are working at their best. I am now doing more than only windsurfing. I started doing sail repair and also help to improve the team at the Bonaire Windsurf Shop here on Bonaire. This windsurfing school has the best windsurfing gear on the Island, and the latest equipment out on the market. You can also check their website: www. Bonairewindsurfplace.com As you can see I am at the beach everyday so I won’t miss a day of wind or sailing.:) I started also going to the Gym working with a personal trainer on the weak muscles. Even though is a bit hard, in the end it will all be for the best. The motivation is on. I go to the Gym at 8’clock in morning for one hour, working mostly on the legs, abs, and lower back.. Well I guess it will all be down to Sylt and how I do and next year when I am more fit and fully on it to do good. Here are some pics from last week. Taty Frans NB-9

August has been a great sailing month on Maui. We started off with a couple of tropical storms that came close enough to give us some nice swell but not so close as to cause any major problems. The remnants of the first storm, Felicia, provided a rainy but fun wave session with a decent size, short period NE swell and squally, side-onshore wind. Though I certainly appreciate Maui’s consistent trade wind conditions and sunny skies, the crazy light reflection on the waters surface and the funky storm surf made for an interesting, out of the ordinary day. The second storm, Guillermo, passed north of us a week after Felicia and again boosted the NE swell giving a light wind day with fun surf at Hookipa followed by returning trades the next day for some fine wavesailing. Just when we were thinking that flat days of summer would return and spoil the fun, a series of early, out-of season North swells got pumped our way thanks to a winter like storm up in the Aleutians. All this early season wave sailing has gotten me excited in anticipation of the fall and winter. My 2010 Legend samples have already had some serious miles since this spring and are holding strong, ready for more. I’m quite happy with my set up this year as the sails have that perfect combination of balanced power for driving a bottom turn together with a completely effortless and neutral feel when slashing off the top. Riding the 2010 Legend together with my little Quatro twinzer I feel like there’s no section of the wave that I can’t reach. The new production Legends should be flooding out through the market about now, providing stoke for many wave sessions.

Lots of races for me this month!! I started with two Formula Windsurfing events in Poland. The first one was in Leba. This event was very well organized and one of biggest events on the tour. The next one was the FW Europeans in Sopot, with light winds and many races. The last one was in Turkey. For me the best stop in the PWA tour .

Alacati is a perfect place for slalom racing. The water is hot and the place is beautiful. There are lots of people learning in many windsurfing clubs they have there. It was great experience for me to race in different conditions and big fleets. After all these events I was missing home and finally I arrived in Brasil. The next weekend after I arrived here we had our second event of the local races. I won, and now I’m leading the

ranking with two victories. It’s very good to be back home with the family and friends. The wind and waves are getting better here every day and I’m sailing almost everyday. In the morning around 6am I go for wave sailing, as the wind is more offshore. Later in the afternoon if the wind is too strong I go for some slalom or if its lighter I go for some

Formula sailing. We have a strong Formula fleet here in Fortaleza, around fourteen guys sailing everyday. I’m getting ready to the FW worlds in September. August was definitely a tuff one. Probably the busiest month for racing and I injured my back in Fuerte. I had some formula events coming up in Poland and then Turkey PWA so i decided to relax in Fuerte and try to be recovered for the next three. In Poland/Leba I had to take it easy as my back was hearting a little still. Specially with the big 12..I wanted to race this two formula events because I wanted to see how the other guys were going. I manage to win two races and have some other decent results so i was happy. In Sopot, where the Formula Europeans took place, I didn’t have such a good event. It was super light wind event and I was suffering with the 12. After that we rushed to Turkey with Gabriel, it was a mission. We drive to Berlin and then took a flight to Istanbul and then Izmir. We arrived the night before the event started. I had some decent first days and i was currently on 8th but then I had a couple of bad starts where I thought that were gona be general recalls and completely stop at the line. So i finished 13th in the end. I went back to Argentina to get my back proper checked. Everything is fine now and I am actually in the Isle of Whight training with Ross for the formula worlds. Sawadeekrab from Thailand. I’m working with my brother here in Chon-Buri at Cobra... the uber-factory of windsurf and surfboards. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been to visit Cobra and with the growth and momentum of the Angulo brand, Mark and I made it down here to introduce the the new slalom boards into production as well as tune up some our new wave designs. The best part of the trip is the combination of Thai food, Thai hospitality, and meeting up with old friends we haven’t seen in a while. So I close my month of August with fresh inspiration for the board business, and working with Mark has given me some further motivation for waveboard development. He has some exciting new ideas and I watch him quickly inherit the lifelong skills of my pops, Ed Angulo. The start of August consisted of some refreshing days at home before an exciting slalom event in Turkey where I had my best result to date with a sixth place. After Turkey it was back to Cabo Verde where some time with the family coincided with a trip to Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde, where we had some exciting talks with our government about the country’s watersports scene, as well as some networking around the capital which is looking more and more like a hub of African activity. Also motivating for us is looking toward the upcoming season at the windsurf center. We are working diligently with our partners in order to give our clients the best windsurf experience possible... "Angulo style". Mark and I are packing up now with some of our top secret new weapons in tow, me headed to Cabo Verde and Mark to Hawaii. Stay tuned! Josh Angulo CV-1

speed, slalom, Since the windy Canaries it has been a very eventful time, with limited time in between the contests to travel, unpacking / reshuffling equipment and tuning up. Straight after Fuerteventura I went to Karpathos for the World Cup Speed Sailing. Having put so much time and preparation into the Waves and Slalom, I struggled a bit against the fastest in the world and just managed to finish inside the top 10. While the entry of the course is upwind there and the wind very gusty underneath a steep hill, I kind of needed different gear. I hoped to use my Missile XS 43 cm, which is a super quick board in combination with TR5 6,3 / 5,5, but it wasn’t happening. It was a chilled event though, after the competitions in the Canaries certainly had a relaxing time. In the morning after the event we returned to Holland and off to Turkey on the next day. It’s funny to get so familiar with the airport although its not my favorite place to hang out, especially when a bag doesn’t arrive with some gear you need for the next race 2 days later... But it was much easier to travel back to Holland by plane; even though Karpathos is not far in distance from Alacati, it takes a long time on several ferry boats. The day before Alacati started I spent my time tuning the equipment for the flat conditions. This makes a big difference with choppy waters and often you need to find stiffer masts and fins, as I found in Karpathos. I sailed very consistent but not strong enough for the top 5 ranking that I aimed for; still for my first year on MauiSails I am quite happy with my performance so far, have to say I tried my hardest and it seems like its almost coming together. Josh sailed really well there and has been growing into every event, now making almost every final.

On the weekend off 22-23 August the Mission, 6th edition took place in Holland, one of Europe’s biggest Amateur event with more then 250 competitors. The light breeze was enough for a fun Slalom competition, with many new up and coming talent and strong competition over all the divisions. Every year you can see the progress the girls and guys are making, and the parents supporting their kids. They are planing around in so little wind it’s amazing. There was also the battle of the giants with guys getting towed up onto the big ramp and into radical freestyle moves. Some big moves

were done in 10 knots of wind off the ramp that Tom Hartmann brought in from Austria; a true spectacle for all the public. And lots of prizes in the Tombola! I think every one must have got something, the best prizes being a brand new Maui Sails Loco, Fanatic & F2 boards and even a fancy scooter from the sponsors as well as big trophies for the winners. The party at night was raging and what a great successful event put together for the 6th time again. Next year it should be even bigger and better, dates are already confirmed for the Mission 21-22 August 2010.

The autumn has started early with lots of wind in Northern Europe. There was an epic forecast for Ireland and off I went with friends to catch waves surfing and free sailing around Brandon Bay. Back to Holland and the wind picked up as well, I reached some gps max speeds of 44.5 knots and 41.46 knots average speed (5x10 seconds) results that I’m happy with as I do it just for fun.

www.gps-speedsurfing.com is getting really popular and it’s cool to sail with everyone around the world and locally posting their sessions. I hit a sand bank at 75 kph, crashed really hard and fell over the boom and bruised some ribs. The boom is OK, but damn it hurt!! it could have been much worse and with a little rest I should be fine for the final in Sylt. Hope the wind is also blowing wherever you are. Where do they go? I guess as one gets ’older’ in years the days slip by more quickly. I hardly remember it being July and already August is done. But it was such a good month of daily accomplishments and maintaining the flow, I suppose that is part of the reason why. Art and I have been having a lot of conversations about the direction of the development of the race and 2011 Wave sails. 2011? That’s right... we have to begin thinking about this in order to have any changes in materials or colors, so might as well begin as soon as possible. The PWA racing in Europe turned out well for us, maybe not on the podium, but surely in the impression people had of the speed that was consistent through our team. Josh had a personal best finish, and Peter was always in finals and knocking on the door. Sailing mistake free and having no gear failures is still going to get them higher I’m sure. I was able to get some photos of Art during one of the days when we had a very early North swell. This is unusual for this time of year, and he was certainly happy to get to his favorite local spot and have the chance to remind himself of all the little tweaks he wants to see in the next round of Legends. We are getting the ideas early thanks to that not normal system far to the North. And he probably had a good time too! Next month I should have some story about something very exciting in my life... a bit too early to speak about yet (no jinx!) but soon there will be news of our expanded water exploration possibilities. New backgrounds for photography will be possible. I am very excited about this, more than can be related. But it will have to wait until set into positive reality. Next month. August began on a high note, when I competed in the Hawaii State Championships. I got back from Europe in tip top shape, but not enough time on the water, so I got stuck into the training, rounding bouys, starts, refining my skills and bringing up my awareness ready for race day. I gave away my age group win to Alex after a silly fall round a buoy. Then in the afternoon for the pro division I put together some good heats, consistently starting well and not making too many mistakes. As it turns out, it was enough to win the State Title, as some of the other guys made mistakes and I capitalized on them, being in the right place at the right time. I was excited about winning and shows not to give up until the fat lady sings. It was then down to business and finalizing the freeride designs for a few weeks as well as starting development on the TR6’s. All the sails felt great and we are getting a good feel for the direction of the race sails. This will take us into early December, so we have some work to do for the next 3 months. Just before the end of the month, we had a surprise swell on the North shore, it was pretty sick for a few days and all the boys were out at Hookipa. Maui at it’s finest when you have slalom conditions all summer and then BANG, a north swell comes out of nowhere. It was enjoyed by all.
As far as my athletic training is going, I have Maui Marathon coming up September 20th, so been focusing on some long runs, as well as continued a few workouts a week in the pool and on the bike. Aloha, Phil McGain
