December in Margaret I spent most my time in Margaret River. The first week was going off, sailing every day with really fun waves. Not too many people sailing at Main break apart from the locals and there were hardly any tourists. Town was fairly quiet which started changing quickly towards the new year.

Its good to be back in West Australia, to be able to windsurf some of the best waves in the world and such consistent sea breezes. Some time to reflect on the last season, spend some down time and recharge for the new season. For sure its good to be riding MauiSails for the 2nd year now and getting really familiar with my gear. Looking forward to trying the new TR-6 sails, tune them up for the races and to get ready! Travelling to Australia can be expensive and airlines are tightening the excess baggage allowance, so I really had to limit my gear this time like never before. The range of use I get out of my 5,0 Legend and 5,8 Global is grand and while that’s the only 2 wave sails I brought with me, together with an 86 liter Fanatic new wave twin, 95% of the time suiting the prevailing sea

breeze conditions. It seems that I can use less power now with my new boards then what I was used to do, making my sails even more suitable then before. Sure makes it easier to choose what gear to take and lots less hassle to tie it all down. Like Johan Cruyff always used to say: every disadvantage has an advantage...! A happy and exciting new year to all of you, filled with happiness and water action. Peter Volwater NED-24

a long year for Gonzalo

no.56. December ’09

Finally December! What a long year! I started racing this year in mid January and I ended up racing both Formula and Slalom national events in this early days of December. We had great conditions on both events. We did 9 formula races and I won the event. The rest of the podium was completed with Maui Sails riders, Rodrigo (my brother) in third and Marcos Galvan in second. In slalom we had some very good heats. We were running a 15 men pro heat. My main rival was legendary Sergio Melh A-21, who was racing on the same combo as me so our speed was very similar. It was a good battle on every heat but I manage to beat him in all 13 races we did. I manage to give a sail as a ruffle at the price giving so thanks to MauiSails so there was a big hype about it. Happy new year to all of you!

great wind and weather

no.56. December ’09

What a nice December I had. Great wind and weather conditions with little rain but was windy like 24 days. I was mostly on 4.8 and 5.6. I started liking the 5.6 and was using it even when the wind got 25+ knots. Still the handling was good and I was doing the same moves I could do when I was on my 4.8. so that gives me a good feeling that i am on the right path. I finally had a day that I was sailing on my 4.4 Loco. What a great sail. I am really enjoy sailing with the Loco’s and with the new 2010 Flare from Starboard my gear is the best I can have. :) big smile. After all the windsurfing days, when there were days with no wind me and my friends went cruising on our ATV did some crazy stuff. We also made some small clips and will try to put it online soon. But after all I wish you all a great and Happy new year. Hear back from me in January. Taty Frans NB-9

busy December

December started out quite busy as we put all the final pieces together for the TR-6 race sails. I spent the second week of December at our factory, in China, checking the final prototypes and doing some fine tuning of the designs in preparation for production. The MauiSails philosophy of “progressive evolution” paid off when it came down to final crunch time as we had been steadily working, in a clear direction throughout the season and thus avoided any last minute surprises. The TR-6 sails have turned out very nicely and represent some significant improvements in stability, balance, power and speed. We are all excited to see them put to use by racers and speed demons around the world. The best part of going to China is coming back to Maui and seeing my 4-year-old daughter running towards me at the airport yelling “Daddy”. The holidays came at the perfect time and it was great to have some days off to chill with the family. The lack of wind this month has made for some fun surf sessions with my wife and daughter. Tandem surfing with my little girl tends to alternate between cruising down-the-line and using the surfboard as a diving board or seesaw, but is very fun. Well, holidays over and we’re already back to work on the next round. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

another year over

no.56. December ’09

One more year is over. This one was so fast. Now we are in December, I can’t believe it!!! But again this year was amazing. So many events, trips all over the world and a lot of windsurfing... I’m having a great time with my family and friends here in Fortaleza. The north swells are coming bigger and more frequently, also the wind is starting to drop a little bit, so it’s time to surf and go for some SUP. I still had some really good

days for wave sailing. I’m on the water everyday here, and now all my friends are on vacation so we are at the beach all day long. I’m having a lot of fun and enjoying every moment !!! Our Christmas was amazing. All the family was together for a big dinner at my grandmother’s house. Now I’m ready for the New Year’s party. We are going to celebrate in a friend’s beach house in the south of Fortaleza. All my family and friends are going there, and I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun there celebrating this moment !! I wish everybody a lot of success, good fortune, and happiness for next year... Gabriel Browne BRA-50

been where I’ve spent the ecember

Howzit from Praia, Santiago, Cabo Verde. The Capital! Praia has been where I’ve spent the majority of December finishing up our second Angulo Cabo Verde retail store as well as starting to sow seed for a future Angulo Windsurf center. It’s quite exciting to see the interest here as it really is a West African city and business hub for African and European businesses, yet it happens to be handily located on a sandy beach with side-short wind in a protected bay that is ideal for teaching and advanced freeride and slalom. After our shop opening, My wife and I got some much needed rest with Noah and some of our extended family here in Cabo Verde up in the mountains in the interior of the island. It was such a refreshing change for me and reminded me of my childhood roots in Hawaii. We had a last minute invite for Christmas dinner to my brotherin laws family’s house that was conveniently located 100 meters from a mountain hideaway , "Quinta da Montanha" where between the hotel and the family’s house we spent three days, sleeping, eating, hiking, and relaxing with family. It was a huge blessing to get to relax after such a hectic workload leading up to our successful store opening. Now towards the end of the month, I’ve been back and forth to Sal where I scored some great sailing and surfing days which kept my adrenalin fix up and was only equalled by the stoke I got finally getting our first beginner lessons going here in the capital with a mixture of kids (majority of which are from the poorer side of town) and some adults ( majority of which are from the more well to do circle of the capital). The stoke they all got being on the water with the windsurf and SUP boards put them all on an equal playing field and general consensus that windsurfing is here to stay in Cabo Verde. Aloha, Josh Angulo CV-1

Suddenly it’s December again

no.56. December ’09

The month of December is always exciting as it begins with the final drive to get all the race sail designs committed to production and measured for registration with the PWA for the coming race season. Artur went to China to guarantee details and assembly of the new updates are all making it into final versions and he had a relatively easy go of it since we were keeping safely ahead of the deadline to avoid last minute troubles.

It’s also the beginning of the next round of Wave and Freestyle sails design development. This year we have specified a slightly heavier white material that will allow some recognizeable evolution of core graphic elements which we carry year to year so the MauiSails ’look’ can be easily identified. Now Artur can insert the white wherever he feels it will enhance the graphic look. As we approached Christmas weekend i have been able to dig deeper into the boat and continue to find more thirty-five year old problems. Let me just say that ’stainless steel’ can look OK and not be at the same time. Looking at developing a new anchor handling setup, we removed the bowsprit/ pulpit using the spi pole for leverage and the dinghy to float it across the harbor, all happy and satisfied to get it to the fabricator’s shop. Sadly when he tried to weld it, the metal just exploded because it was all corroded on the inside, actually weak and dangerous. So good thing to get it off the boat, but now there is need for a totally new one. Good thing I have some nautical trade goods the guy is looking for to keep the cost down. It won’t be long until we can get to some cool places for photos and adventures though. I hope everyone has had a good year worth remembering and that there has been plenty of TOW to make up for anything else that might have made life less interesting. I wish you all a very Happy New Year and a lively and prosperous 2010. Aloha Barry Spanier

Another year flies by

no.56. December ’09

With the World Markets down and economies in trouble, MauiSails had a very good year both on and off the water. Products are getting better, our business has gotten more streamline and we are continuing to look at improvements in all areas. We had another PWA World Champion with Josh and our overall race team did a wonderful job promoting our products.

Our flagship product in the TR-6 just got finished in China, with Art taking a trip down there to visit our Chinese friends in the factory, and at the moment we have record orders being processed to delivery in February into each country. Sailing wise has been a little slower on Maui this time of year, we had a down time of wind, but some huge waves were hitting our shores. I ran my 9th Marathon in 4 years, with the Honolulu Marathon December 13th, coming in 1669th place out of 30,000 competitors with a time of 4 hours, 7 minutes. See you all in 2010 and we look forward good winds, good product and good health.
