First victory in Podersdorf Taty Frans NB-9
On the 30 of April till the 5th of May was the beginning of the PWA Freestyle Windsurfing World Cup. At registration and Skipper’s meeting a possible first heat was announced. But since the forecast wasn’t looking good for the whole week, everyone went full power party on the opening day and never thought that the wind was blowing at 5am in the morning. But as we wanted to do the first heat on the first day of the competition the wind died completely, leaving the crowd with no action for awhile until Tonky Frans and Tom Hartman had the idea of doing the ramp while having the powerboat dragging them. The event organizer had 1000euro prize money for the ramp contest so I signed up together with six other riders to do this.

The first day I didn’t go for it as I was a bit scared for the ramp to break my board or hurting my self. For the Saturday Ramp Contest each rider had two jumps: Taty, Tonky, Tom, Nicholaz Akazchan. My first jump was a tweaked Punch or airflaka landed perfect. I don’t really know what it was but if you see on the picture it looks like a Punch to me. On the second Jump my fin hit the side of the ramp breaking the fin, so for me not to hurt myself on the ramp I pushed my body forward and did this one legged loop and still made it. So it’s amazing. Tonky also did a sick one handed flaka but couldn’t stick the landing while Nicholas did also a flaka but crashed the landing. So in the end I was the one who had the best jumping score. Sunday jet ski towing freestyle contest results were: 1st Steven with the CULO, 2nd Taty Frans double flaka, 3rd Nicholas no handed flaka.
The Competition day : 5th of May Skippers meeting 5:30 am The first heat started pretty early around 6 o’clock. Early in the morning the wind was perfect 5.2 conditions. I saw Steven sailing on his 5.2 and I was like yes, this is the conditions I need. But then as the minutes went by the wind was getting lighter. So I just took my Loco 5.6 out and my 98 flare wood carbon board with a 16cm Maui Ultra fin. I stuck to this rig for the whole time, as I felt very comfortable using this gear. First heat was against Italy’s Caspirini, a well respected guy. He’s sailing pretty well for his age. I made a routine in my head while I was on the beach so I stuck to it and it went okay. I started off with shaka then stuck to the sliding moves all the way thru the end of the heat. Next heat was against Dieter. I changed the routine a bit started with a Culo then sliding moves then shaka. I was kinda combining air moves with sliding moves together so the heat went pretty easy. and that I am having all the moves figured out in my head makes me feel more relaxed.
Loco 5.6 is a beast in light wind.
Next heat for top 5 or semifinal: Me against my brother. I hate this but it’s part of he competition. I went up early and as I was sailing up I made a good routine to do a good show plus having a great heat. Tonky took his 5.2 but I kept on my 5.6 Loco. The sail works just fine in medium conditions and even in the gust. The wind started to be more consistence and I was powered up on my 5.6. I did a Double spock, then spock 540 straight into slider, then burner, punch, kono, double spock on the other tack so I was really on it. Because I know how good Tonky is and I know what he is capable of I stuck to my heat program and never got distracted by what I saw him doing. When I got to the beach waiting for results I was like, man I have to win… and the announcers said Kiri v.s Taty Frans next heat, I was like Woooooooo! Yes!! Sick!!! And Steven was against Gollito. Man I was already feeling great to be in the top four and maybe even a great podium finish. So whatever I would finish I would be happy and it’s a great start for the first event.

Went out for the semifinal Taty v.s Kiri: I forgot to make a heat routine. I didn’t feel nervous in this heat like when it was me vs. Tonky heat. The wind got a bit lighter and this meant Kiri had a bit of an advantage but this didn’t bring me down. I knew I just had to do the best I could and make the best out of myself and wind conditions. In this heat against Kiri I try to do as much power move as I could and to be more stylish. It was hard to sail good while knowing that the conditions were perfect for Kiri. The heat went great and I know we both sailed well but the results were up to the judges to decide who will go to the losers and winner final.

First results I heard the announcer say is, “Steven”. I heard Steven saying: like what men I can’t believe it. At that moment I was and still am happy for him. I was “Wooo!! That’s great”. Then a minute later, “and the going to the winner final is Taty. MAN THE BEST FEELING EVER. I went to Steven and we both were like are we dreaming… or something. I just screamed like crazy. I didn’t care if I became 2nd or 1st at the moment. I was so happy to have a good results in the first PWA Freestyle event.

Winner final Taty vs. Steven: six moves on each tack and three to count on each tack 9 minute heat. The wind got lighter, and pretty gusty, but the Loco 5.6 is a beast in light wind. It has a lot of power but is easy to throw around. I sailed this heat with what ever move I could. When I got the gust I pumped, did a culo, punch, switch chaco diablo, slider, lollipop, flaka. I did some of these moves on both tacks. It was a hard heat. I knew Steven started off pretty laid back and got better in the end, but even though I felt like I won still I had this feeling that it was hard to know who won. Nine minutes seems pretty long but when you are in the heat pumping like crazy to do a move the time runs out quick. I am happy to have done this and that we have a result. Either me or Steven will win this event and I am happy and I know he is also happy.

I went to the stage for the results. Steven grabbed my hand and pulled it up and I was pointing my finger at him and he was pointing his finger at me. The announcer said: AND THE WINNER OF THE 2010 Podersdorf PWA Freestyle event is TATY FRANS... Men… am I dreaming?? I just smiled and smiled. Winning Sylt really made me work and train harder on the water and gave me the motivation for freestyle and to be on the water. I became more addicted to it. It’s not been a easy road to win this event, that’s for sure. But I am happy and I really do appreciate this win. Taty Frans NB-9 :)

Photoshoting and traveling Wassup, my readers! As you read my PWA Podersdorf event report now I can take you for a journey over the month April that was also fully packed with action. April has been great for me. I took a flight on the 30th of March from Bonaire to the final stop in Maui, where i spent fifteen days. The reason I was in Maui was to be part of the Starboard photo shoot. I can remember when the plane was arriving and the pilot was saying, ‘It’s sunny with strong wind’, I thought that’s a good thing to hear. But when I got off the plane and Bogo picked me up he was telling me that it’s like 50 plus knots. I never expected it to be so windy. It was my first time being in Maui when it’s this windy. We went straight to the beach and I rigged up the new 2011 Legend 3.5, got out on the water and was FULLY overpowered. Damn. Can you imagine getting out of the plane after about twenty-four hours flying and going straight to sailing is like a nightmare. But luckily the sail was working great and it was perfect to have the time and the perfect wind to test the 3.5 Legend. I spent one week with the Starboard crew shooting with John Carter each day at a different spot, did some filming, and got a look at the new 2011 boards. Nice graphics. I kinda like the new looks. After the Starboard photoshoot was finished I stayed for another week on Maui to test the new 2011 Locos and to ride each day to the beach with Bogo doing the photo shoot for MauiSails and filming some small clips for the Loco. All I can say that I am so amazed how the new colors look and the Loco’s are getting better. I found the perfect setup to make the 5.2 at its best and the rest of the sizes 5.6 4.8 4.4. We made the foot cut higher so it’s easier to duck the sail but still keeping the same sail power and feel. All I can say is you will be happy with the new Locos. The 4.4 is working on a 370 mast so this will be so light in your hands, it’s like a feather. The Ghost XT was the sail I was amazed how it works for wave and freestyle, how light and so well balanced. MAN… it’s DA SHIT :) thumbs UP.

I had a great time in Maui sailing on his boat and looking at the whales, Maui sure is beautiful.. Having dinner at Barry’s house, having the best desert and the sweetest strawberry ever, and listening how windsurfing all started and all these great stories all meant a lot to me. THANK YOU BARRY. Your wife sure is a nice person. I want to of course thank Phil for letting me stay in a small but still cozy house. I am happy as long as I have a roof on my head ;). But what goes @ comes @. I had two great weeks in Maui sailing from 3.5 to 5.2 and I am happy that everything went okay with the photo shoot for both Starboard and MauiSails. The only bad news was I broke my board during a sequence session for the BONGKA move that’s a LOOP into FLAKA. Luckily I did ten so we have that on the camera.
When I got back on Bonaire there was no wind. I had twelve days to get in the 5.6 sail program for the First PWA FREESTYLE WORLD CUP event. As I had been in Maui sailing mostly small sails and I knew that in Austria it will be more likely 5.6. One week of no wind, not even for 5.6, was frustrating. Then four days before leaving to Austria the wind start building but that was early in the morning or very late in the afternoon. I took some time to rig my 5.6 and 5.2 and tune them at the right setting. I had maybe three days on the water but only for four hours. Tonky, Kiri and I flew to Austria and we got a KLM SPONSORSHIP for the flight so that’s a big relief save us some money on airfreight and plus the excess baggage. One triple boardbag with 1x flare 98 woodcarbon, Loco’s 4.8 5.2 5.6, mast 1x 430 and 1x 400. Boom 1x 140-200 and 170-230, two mast extensions on mast base, a wetsuit and a summer jacket to keep myself warm while at the beach during the heats. No wind in Austria for now. At the moment I am still here waiting for the wind. It’s not so cold. I am wearing flip flops and just T-shirt with a long jeans because it’s like summer. April in Baja Punta San Carlos!

Ingrid and I just got back from another great trip down to San Carlos. Though they weren’t the biggest waves we’ve seen down there, we had consistent South and Northwest swells pumping through the whole time. After coming off a 6-week trip to Maui it was especially nice to be back and really push it down there in the side-off conditions. I sailed mainly my 4.7 Legend and 5.0 Ghost, and Ingrid was on her 4.2 Legend most of the time. The sails felt great! In those side-off conditions the Legend just feels so light, de-powering easily, and powering back up for off the lips with great control. I was especially blown away with the performance of the Ghost.

In moderate wind conditions and good swell, I found I could always get going, and catch tons of waves, turning what could have been a so-so day into a blast! Ingrid was killing it on her 4.2, no question her favorite size for wavesailing. During our Tabou Wavecamp hosted at SoloSports during the first week, Matt Pritchard, Kevin McGillivray and myself constantly used her riding style as an example for our students. We were also joined by our friends Tato Brunet, Vicki Sanchez, Sam Neal, and Eduardo. As always, thanks again to the whole crew at SoloSports Adventure Holidays for looking after us and kickin a few Baja fogs our way! For anyone interested in heading down to San Carlos, be sure to contact SoloSports, those guys will get you dialed!

Windy Maui April
In one month I never sailed so much as last month on Maui. Right from the start of my trip it was time to do photo’s for the brochure of the 2011 sails, unpacking these beauties and taking them on their first ride. They really look amazing and such a joy to feel the changes and improvements, leaping into the future. Some of the days it was smoking and I remember standing at camp-one and seeing the tops of the waves blowing off into spray, and having training sessions on the new TR-6, down to the 5.1! The race sails are setting up fuller and are more balanced, exactly what we wanted! It reminded me there is no place like Maui, and getting so much time in on the water you simply can’t beat it. Barry and Sam took us on a boat ride, checking out the migrating whales and spectacular scenic views of the South shore and west side of Maui in good company. It was breath taking and a very nice experience to be out there on Barry’s new boat. At Hookipa there was plenty of action going on. Most the brands were doing their photo shoots and the second part of April it clearly started turning on, with a couple swells from the NW. Wind swell is still fun out there and it wasn’t like there hasn’t been any swell, while Maui had a huge winter. But for who only got there like me end of March, we started to wonder when to see some action. Art was boosting in the side on shore conditions at lanes on the ghost when it was hard to even do a front side turn. I was loving the Legends at Hookipa, the sails are getting ever more springy and lively. It was some great fun riding new technical equipment and yes it definitely helps to push your sailing abilities taking it to the next level. Thanks team of Maui Sails and hope to be back again soon! April was a home time
I spent a lot of time at home on April. I started sailing slalom a lot! Every single day of breeze I manage to squeeze some of slalom training. I sailed mostly on the 7.6 TR-6 and I am loving it. The sail has a bit more top speed, but I personally feel that the stability has been improved big time.

MauiSails Boom Front End On the end of the month we had a couple of very cold days due to the wind of the SW that I manage to sail the 7.0 TR-6. I loved the 7.0 TR-5 and this one felt very similar but a little bit more balanced.. The slalom season is getting closer so I am very excited to take off again to the tour..! A good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast. It’s been a busy month on Maui as windsurfing photo shoot madness took hold. Hookipa has been a circus all month but it’s good to have a little excitement every once in a while on this little island. There was plenty of wind all month along with several small-medium size north swells. Not epic winter conditions but enough to get the job done. I spent a lot of time sailing a 2011 5.3 Ghost proto and had a chance to test it in a very wide range of conditions. On a marginal side-on shore day it got me going and generated speed on the wave with great efficiency. On a classic side-off shore day it had super light handling and responded perfectly driving through the bottom turn and releasing during the top turn. I was especially surprised at how much range the sail had during a long 5 or 6 hour session at Hookipa that started out light but ended up cranking windy. The 5.3 stayed light and well behaved even though it was windy enough to be powered on a 4.5. We have been putting some work into the Loco freestyle range this year and having Taty around this past month for testing and feedback has been great. We are adding a 4.0 and 4.4 to the 2011 range and they both rig on a 370 rdm. Generally the Locos this year are fine tuned to be a bit softer with a flatter upper profile and more even leech tension. April is always a great month here at MauiSails because we get to be with our sailors and work on new things, get photo work out of the way, and do some tuning. Peter Volwater and Taty Frans gave us generous amounts of their time and both were excited to be working with Art to further refine the Legend, Loco, and TR-6. On top of that it was totally windy most days so they all got to sail as much as they could stand. We had some time to be more social as well and were able to have a dinner or two, and a few trips to the West side to catch the NW swell and strong wind. I think the guys were pretty worn out but stoked by the time they left, and they were ready for the first competitions in Austria and Korea. Unfortunately Gonzalo was unable to be here, but we kept him in the loop on the developments. He is going to DefiWind in France next. The work on Cornelia continues as much as possible with the slip in Lahaina making it easier because of power and water being available. Big doings this month in the galley (almost ready for making a meal now) and the forward saloon berth getting converted into a big double. Almost all the painting is done so only a few days more in the dust and grime. As a small reward we invited Fred Haywood to join us on a quickie trip to Lanai in company with the small fleet of Lahaina race boats. Cornelia got off to a late start (it was pretty informal racing as you can see from Fred’s high energy positioning :)), but we saw the others getting headed and chose to be close hauled longer and slide right down on them before we were halfway to Manele Bay. I think they were all surprised such a big old cruiser had such good speed... and we never even used the big sails. It made for a fitting end to a wonderful month and a good start to the new one. April fools A fantastic month on Maui for wind and waves. Some of our team riders showed up for our annual photoshoot, which was a big success thanks to the ever efficient Bogo chasing around the Island for wind and sun. Peter Volwater and Taty were working extremely hard with Bogo to get all the shots necessary, as well as Art, who I believe got some of the best shots on the Ghost. Yours truly, yes me, well I had my moment of glory on the Titan and hopefully got in a few smiles for the camera. We had some good tuning on the race gear and had a chance to put the TR6 sizes through there paces. A few words to summarize these little beauties, solid, control and speed, simply amazing, love the tr6’s and can’t wait to race on them. Not much more I can remember except spending time on the new sails and really enjoying the progress we have made, looking forward to our customers getting them here in the next few months.
