Great performance in Australia The month of January I was in Western Australia. In the second week of January I competed in the Lancelin Ocean classic and it was a great event, good conditions for all three disciplines and a big (international) turnout. At the Ledge Point to Lancelin marathon, I ended up winning for the third time in a row in an all time record time. STOKED! On my 2009 TR-5 7.0 and my new Fanatic Falcon 112. Usually chasing down the weather maps, there were also heaps of good wave days at home in Margaret River and I just returned from a fun road trip up the West coast. In one week we traveled for 2800 k’s and scored four epic days of sailing the long left handers we found. Camping out in the bush and making fires at night under the open sky was very chilled. How lucky to be able to just take off and go! All in all I brought minimal equipment out; only two wave sails and two race sails. The wind range of my sails are big enough that I could sail on most the days. At least it makes the choice what to rig a lot easier! Europe apparently has been really cold. I hope that the windsurf season there does not take too long to start up. Right now I am on the way to South Africa to test boards and make some jumping practise before heading over to Holland and organize for the upcoming events, awaiting with great excitement the new TR-6 race sails. Good sailing! Aloha Peter Volwater H-24

Beautiful view of January Most surfers associate Cabo Verde with the island of Sal, waves of Punta Preta and windsurfing legend Josh Angulo. The truth is that the archipelago of Cape Verde consists of ten main islands and five smaller islands. Each island is quite a different world‌ different dialect of Creole, different terrain, and unique history. But what connects them all is people with a positive attitude towards life and other men. Morabeza means No Stress and is not just a slogan invented for tourists. There it simply is so. In early December, a few friends of mine flew to Boa Vista (Portuguese name for "beautiful view") to recharge the batteries in the sunny atmosphere and have some good surfing. The

fruit of two weeks was signing a contract for managing a surf station on the island. Finally, my friends have a surf station in paradise, and I had to check it out. At the beginning of January, our ten person crew landed in the different reality of Boa Vista. ... Well I hope you all had a great new year and that the year of 2010 opened with a lot of smiles, happiness and of course, wind. Here I am trying to write the January report to you readers. I don’t know where to begin. Okay, first day of 2010: Nice sunny, steady wind, just perfect for freestyle, what a beautiful day. How can a year open which such great conditions? :) Well it’s great to live in Bonaire where it’s warm and the wind is great. I used mostly for the two weeks of January the 5.6 Loco, it’s such a great sail.. the more I sailed with it the more I got in love with it. The wind for the first two weeks was between 18-25 knots. This wind condition was perfect for me to sail as much with the 5.6 so that I can understand how the sail works in high and low wind. Well for my surprise the sail was working at its best in all conditions. I had no problem doing Culo, burner, Kono and all those air moves with the 5.6: so to me it’s just a matter of getting used to the sails. Ever since I came back to MauiSails my freestyling got better and better by the days.. is it because of the sails or is it because I dedicate more time on the water? Well truth is.. When your equipment is at their best and you enjoy each moment of the day on the water, this is what makes you have to hunger to be training and windsurfing more and take that next step of your windsurfing to another level. Okay let’s get back to the last days of the month of January: After sailing with the 5.6 for the first two weeks there was about 2 days of no wind. Slowly after that the wind started to pick up from 15 to 20 knots then after the third day straight until the 31st of January every day 20-30 knots of wind. So I put the 5.6 away and got back on the 4.8 Loco, and I remember having to sail with

2010 nice sunny, steady wind, just perfect 4 freestyle the 4.4 Loco one time because it’s was just too much wind for the 4.8. I am sailing every day and i am getting better in my air moves, so I am happy for myself. My Loco sails are working and I can prove that so. Winning the event in Sylt gave me more motivation and the energy to make me have the power to get on the water and to not give up. when you have such great sails it makes you just want to get on the water each time the wind blows so that’s what I have felt, the wanting to just be on the water. Overall we had the

best days of freestyling here on Bonaire. We have many Italian, Dutch, French and U.S freestylers here on Bonaire who just came down to train with us.. Saraquita will come next month to Bonaire to also train and get ready for the PWA tour. So Bonaire is hot... a lot of tourists and many windsurfers on the water, wind is good and the weather is just sunny :) After all the freestyle training, I also gave

Art and Barry ideas on the 2011 Loco sails... There’s some interesting ideas and I am looking forward to get to try the new prototype Loco 5.6 5.2 4.8 and also the 4.4 and 4.0. I am sailing so much, that I get to understand more of what a sail has to be.. so my ideas will be 100% good and the Loco’s will be even much better are for the years to come. Peace, Taty frans NB-9 :) smile up always no matter what hihihiihi......

Basketball, windsurfing clinics and fun
Still here in CV, a place that has drawn always nearer to my heart. Today, Jan. 31, Angulo Cabo Verde hosted the first ever street basketball tournament in the town of Santa Maria together with our partners, K1X. It was awesome to see all the kids, girls and rough boys balling it out on the streets and a huge blessing to be a part of a sports movement in a country. Earlier in the month I got to score some good days during a couple windsurf clinics. We had one wild one with a Dutchy and a Norwegian. I thought it would be cultural to show them the small grog bars on the far side of the island and we made it back in one piece, but as a non-drinker trying to keep the Norwegian viking under control it was quite a challenge.

The boys had a wild day and we woke up to firing conditions the next few days and the boys claimed it was one of their best trips ever. A little later in January I had a one day clinic with two more Dutchies and a Scottish gal. We scored a really fun secret spot on the east coast and they were all super stoked as the conditions were user friendly and everybody was raving about the Changos and Legends. I even had to part with one of our new 2010 Changos as Roy fell in love with it and thought it would be the perfect Zandvoort board. As for getting my own fix, I’ve had a couple sick down the line days and am more pleased than ever with the 2010 Legends. I have a few Ghosts coming and if they are as good as Art says they are, then fun is the only option. Thanks, Josh Angulo CV-1

El Nino effects on Maui Weather Well “El Nino” is having it’s expected effect on Maui Weather. We have had one big swell after another this winter, but very inconsistent wind. It has been important to be at the right place at the right time in order to catch the good windsurfing sessions. Seasons like this one at least force you to sail in a variety of conditions, ranging from straight off-shore Kona winds with barreling surf, to stormy, rainy side-on-shore with short period mush-burger waves. Last week we got lucky enough to have a solid trade wind day with big surf and I was able to get a good session on some of the new wave sail samples. We had enthusiastic reports from some high-wind locations regarding the Legends last year and received requests for a 2.9 and 3.5 to complement the existing sizes. So for those lucky enough to live in places where you can actually use sails that small, good news. We have gone ahead and developed these new sizes and they will be available for the 2011 Legend. The new Legend range will cover from 2.9 up to 6.1. We have a big pile of 2011 wave sail samples sitting downstairs and it looks like the wind and swell are coming up. It should be a good afternoon for some sail testing. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

The new year started really good in Brazil with great wave sailing conditions. It’s not every year that we are lucky like this one. The north swells are coming every week and the wind is just perfect for wave sailing. When I’m not sailing I¹m going for the SUP. I just received my new one and it is amazing. Also now it¹s time to work hard at the gym. I¹m there every day and I’M starting to see good result. January is so exciting because the new sails are starting to show good performance everywhere. Everyday that I check the MauiSails Forum there is someone very happy with the new TR6’s sails. I didn¹t receive my sails yet but they are looking amazing in the pictures !! I’m looking forward to arrive in Calema to get my sails and go to the water !!! Now I’m ready for some snowboarding in Austria. I¹m going there with family and friends during the Carnival weekend. I¹m sure we are going to have a lot of fun in the mountains !! Best Regards, Gabriel Browne BRA-50

Back in my home town in summer! January is especially hot down here, it can be 40 degress. I spent a lot of time at the beginning of the month sailing in slalom. I wanted to prepare myself for an event that is every year in the south of ARG in a windy lake "Nahuel Huapi" next to the city of Bariloche. So i went there with some friends to this beautiful place. It reminds me always Silvaplana with all the mountains with snow and forests surrounding the lake. The event was very well organised and we did a lot of racing. We did normal slalom racing and a lot of long distance races. It was a lot of fun and i won every race! After that i came back home and continued with my heavy gym training and i started sailing in Formula again. I received my new sails so i was putting a lot of hours on the water testing them. I am stoked with the performance of all three of them. But I have to say that the new 11.0 is unreal. Best Racing, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel ARG-3

January is just the beginning of another awesome year. We have been looking forward to seeing the latest TR sails making it into the world and the results have been encouraging so far. Positive reaction from Aus and Japan has led to more inquiries about availability, but sadly the original production orders for January AND February (way up from 2009) have already sold out. Solid orders will still get into March delivery. In January, the big news was seeing Peter Volwater convincingly win the famous Ledge-to-Lancelin long distance race in West Australia. He had top speed on his ’old’ TR-5s and was able to beat top sailors from around the country, including Bjoern Dunkerbeck (5th), launching our 2010 competition victory list and getting us ready for many more. Wave and freestyle development is progressing nicely and Art has solidified the graphic look of the Legend and Loco with the careful use of a bright third color and a nice continuity of theme and design. Now based on his own several years of shape evolution and personal testing experience, along with an extra good load of team rider feedback, we can make design decisions that will advance the performance. It’s not going to be easy to make the 2010 wave sails ’history’, but there are always small things that can be done to each size to make them better based on experience. In addition, we are adding a Legend 2.9 and 3.5 and Loco 4.0 and 4.4 to better serve small people and areas of very high winds, like the Gorge and Canaries. CORNELIA continues to evolve with lots of reconstruction and painting now. The interior is almost refinished, shining

white now with the original teak trim. The decayed bowsprit is almost ready to be replaced with an industrial strength version, complete with new decking made from salvaged teak that came with the boat, heavy duty anchor rollers, and some new energy efficient LED running lights. With good weather for the installation and re-tune of the rig she should be sailing before the whales leave again. Aloha, Barry Spanier
MauiSails Boom Front End A good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast. MauiSails frontend fits 37mm or 40mm diameter carbon tubes. Will fit most booms on the market. You can buy it in MauiSails online store at www.mauisails.com

Not much wind in January
no.57. January ’10
An easy January with not much wind, but plenty to do. With not much wind during January it was time to get some things straightened up around here, building sail racks, getting old stock organized to sell, generally do stuff which gets put off while there is wind.

We did have some Kona wind days, so I was heading over Kihei some afternoons to get some flat water sailing in Maalaea and what they called “speed beach”. So different sailing in Kihei compared to the Northshore, it’s always hard to gauge how the sails actually perform, generally they all feel good in the flat water, it’s just a matter of holding on and blasting away. We have already heard the TR-6 has landed in some markets and so far the feedback has been positive, people are feeling the differences between TR-5 and the improvements in the TR-6.
