Beautiful Princes was born

Summer seems to be so long, but at the end when you are traveling and competing you realize that it goes by so quick. After having a low result in Lanzarote, it just made me feel bad, but I know it was my own mistake. I learned from it had some advice from some of my windsurf buddies and I will take that and work on things to improve. Sometimes no matter how good you are, you will always need a little bit more information. You never stop learning.

The best thing that happened to me this month is the birth of my baby Girl. Yes I am a father now :) and I am happy about my daughter. Name: Gianna Damanty. DoB: 8th July 2010 Gianna means God’s grace and Damanty means Beautiful princes. So after Lanzarote on the 4th of July I flew back home to Bonaire. Then on the 7th I had to fly to Curacao because that’s where my girlfriend had to give birth. Everything went good during and after delivery so that’s a relief. After all that I bought my ticket back to Fuerteventura where I arrived on the 19th and was just in time to train and to be able to see these guys do slalom. It was just amazing. Peter was flying, nice board speed and all that, but made some small mistakes, otherwise he should have for sure had a better result. My training in Fuerteventura went great. I had a lot of time sailing plus testing the smaller Locos 4.0 and 4.4.. I like the way these sails perform. It’s just what I needed for the high wind conditions. So I guess I did a great work. Writing this MM report it is the 31st of July and I just finished the 1st double of the freestyle in 3rd place. We still have another double to do so the action won’t stop until the 2nd of August so catch you all on the next report. It’s windy here in Fuerteventura. In the heats I was using my 2011 Loco size 4.4. All the best Taty Frans

Taty’s email from 2nd of August : I got 5th spot! It’s been an amazing crazy 5 days at Fuerteventura. I had some amazing heats and did the best to came every time in the top 4 finals. The level is so high that one mistake can make you suffer a heat.I was on the 1st and 2nd day on my loco 4.4 and then the last 2 days I was on the loco 4.0. The sails are working great. Overall: I was looking for a podium finish here in Fuerteventura so that I can still fight for the PWA World title. But now that I finish 5th I can probably only fight for a top 2 or top 3 position overall it will all depends on how I do in Sylt. I am really looking forward to go back to Bonaire and train for the PWA Sylt in September and get back a good podium results and hopefully to have a better overall results by the end of the season. A busy month for me, but a very successful one. The highlight was winning the Overall US National Title in San Francisco and Hawaii State Slalom championship. I basically decided ten days before to attend the event, give some boast to the US market by showing some dominating presence on the race course and mixing it up with some of the best US racers. San Francisco is always a guarantee for wind and challenging conditions, so I had to get to work and prepare. The week before Maui decided to turn down the wind which was perfect for me. I was able to spend considerable time on the larger sails, 11m, 10m and 9.2m which were the sizes I was going to register for the event. I immediately felt comfortable on the formula board after only spending a few hours on the board in the past 5 years. I had a good week of training, my body was in good shape from all the cross training and I was sure I hadn’t forgotten how to race. I arrived in San Francisco the day before registration, with Rick picking me up in his big blue van. Hit the race site for an afternoon session and finalize some fin selection for the event, I was ready to race. We had 5 days of good winds, competing in Formula, Long Distance and Slalom. I mostly used the 10m sail and 7.6 in slalom. I had a good time not only on the water but off the water, talking story, doing a clinic with the Juniors, attending the social events at the Yacht club and of course taking home the “Hardware”. Back to Maui and prepare for the States. We finally had good winds at Kanaha for the Hawaii State titles and I put in a good day of racing winning both my age group 40-49 and the prestigious Pro division. Aloha, Phil McGain

I came here in 2001 for an event and after that I just fall in love with the place. I came for three years in a row to train formula after that. Coming back now and see many friends was really nice. We had 5 days of nonstop winds, so we manage to train a couple of days and then race up to 6 races one day! It was three days event and there was a SUP and course kite racing too. We would start on the outer reef and finish next to the beach. The venue was great. I scored 9 bullets out of 12 races we did so I was pretty happy about that. I mainly used my 7.6 TR-6 and my SL66 Exocet. The level was pretty high as Wilhelm Shurman BRA999 (NP/Starboard) and Enes Yilmazer TUR2 (NP/JP) were there. Wilhelm got 2nd and Enes 3rd. There was a weekend warrior fleet that was fun to watch. They had a lot of fun. They were around 30 during the weekend. There were 10 competitors in the PRO division. The conditions were really nice. The water is not only warm but turquoise, and having 20 to 25 kts of steady trade winds it just makes it wonderful. I just had to walk 10 mts and get in the water from my hotel. The organizers put a lot off effort on having great social events after the racing so everybody could share a little more than only the water. It’s nice to socialize and meet new people that share the same passion. Off to Fuerte, I broke two of my best fins and I couldn’t get back my speed…Now I made to Turkey, so I will have 5 days till the event… Best regards, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel

Canaries month In the month of July all the time was spent in the Canary Islands for the 2 World Cup events and pre competition training. With pretty much guaranteed wind and usually good conditions it’s normally a lot of fun and the center stage of the PWA tour. Because of the financial crisis and problems to make the Gran Canaria event happen this year, it turned into a Wave only event with 4 days competition. With conditions a little bit average compared to the previous years I couldn’t show the best of form and unfortunately no Slalom while in these conditions last year it was my best event getting 5th and winning 2 rounds. I was happy with the Legend wave sails that have a nice balance between softness, handling and power. Maybe if I had a bit more luck with the waves in my heat I could have done better, especially in my double elimination heat it was pretty much flat. The level keeps on rising, and what Victor Fernandez and Philip Koester where pulling off in these small waves was simply amazing. Finally the victory went to Victor who seemed to have the upper hand on the wave riding side of the score sheets while Philip is the jumping machine. Gloria Palace was again the sponsor of the event and a great place to stay away from the wild weather in Pozo Izquerdo and a good place to dust yourself off and unwind at the end of the day. As the Netherlands got second it was good to follow the matches here of the world cup soccer.

From the rocks at Pozo to the lush sandy beaches in playa Jandia, such a contrast and a lot more friendly for the normal tourist, so together with the fantastic organization of the Rene Egli crew this event seems to continue to grow every year. There were a lot more spectators this year while most advertising had been done for this event. With a week and a half in between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and arriving early to train, it really arched up and we were treated with winds strengthening up to 3040 knots every afternoon! The 5,5 and 6,3 got a good work out before the event, although usually it’s not the best sign before a contest when it’s howling every day even in Sotavento... Sure enough during the event the wind got lighter and lighter day by day. Some intense racing during the 5 days of competition saw Albeau putting in the best performance beating the rest who where left behind in his wake. Although Finian Maynard got close in the end with still a chance to win the event on the final day. It was possible to do 9 races all together, my best results were a 9th winning a runners up final and finishing in 14th place overall. When looking down the list there is a lot of names and a sign that the level is extremely high at the moment. Next up is Turkey for the second to last Slalom event of the year and chances to improve in the rankings. Back into training mode now leaving the canary islands with all wave and racing equipment and repack at home for the next event in Turkey early August. Full of action month! As always! After a slow cold start to the season, July 1st rolled through with a bang and we didn’t look back! For me, the month started off full power as I organized a two-week long ShadowBox Jumpoff competition presented by EpicSessions.tv. 13 riders were selected to participate, and for a 10-day window ending on July 8th, riders were allowed to go anywhere they wanted in Hood River to find the best conditions they could to compete against each other for 9 different metrics based on the objective data provided by ShadowBox; such as highest jump, highest forward, highest backloop, fastest spin rotation, etc. Check out the event video and recap here at www.epicsessions.tv. Congrats to our own Ingrid Larouche for taking top spot in the women’s division for highest stock-air! Can’t admit it was ALL work though, on July 4th, the biggest day of the comp, I did get some time on the water at The Wall lit out of my mind on the new 3.5 Legend with RV size swells rolling through all day, great way to spend Independence day!

We wrapped up the ShadowBox Jumpoff and made our way down to San Francisco for the US Nationals. Ingrid and I were only competing in slalom and freestyle, so for the first few days we spent time away from Crissy Field and went exploring the bay. I hadn’t been back in the area for a couple years, so for me this event was real special to come back and sail some of my favorite spots. A bunch of us rolled out to the Delta as it was firing there all week, and had great 4.7-3.7 sessions there. My parents keep a trailer there for the month of July, and it was awesome to get to spend time with the whole Delta crew! I had a good early morning ebb on my 3.7 Legend, but spent most of my time out there on the 4.4 and 4.8 Locos. The Loco’s really perform exceptionally out in the Delta, both Ingrid and I had a blast, she was using the 4.0 Loco a lot.

Later in the week they made the call to run slalom, so we headed back to the city. The first day the winds were a bit light, and I was a little under on my TR-6 7.0 and Manta 64. Ingrid also was underpowered on her 6.0 Switch, and they called the slalom only after a couple races. Saturday was a different story. Slightly stronger winds and the 7.0 was awesome! We got off a good amount of races and it was a blast. Ingrid killed it in the women’s division on a 6.0 pursuit, winning every race on the final two days of slalom, easily taking the national title! After slalom we tried to make it through a freestyle competition. The wind was very light and gusty, and the biggest rig I had was my Tabou 3S 86, and a 2011 5.2 Loco. Stoked on the new 5.2

is all I have to say, that sail got me going in almost zero-wind, I was able to land a few moves to advance into the finals, before they eventually cancelled the whole event and just tied the top four finalists! Again, congrats to Phil McGain for deciding to come out for the event just days before and taking the overall title! Always getting top spots in all the course races and slalom, then killing it in the long distance race, it didn’t even seem to phase him at the end of the day as I’d see him put on his running shoes and take off through the city! All in all it was a great event, awesome to be with the whole MauiSails team in the bay, and great to see the stoke behind MauiSails with Sunset Sailboards in the bay and Delta Windsurf Company out in Rio Vista, and all the people on the water enjoying their sessions with MauiSails!!! Wide sleeve here, wide sleeve there July has been all about race and freerace sails. We have gotten an early start on our race sail development this year and have been testing a couple of different concepts in an effort to make the next great leap in TR series performance. We built lots of samples to test different aspect ratios and we are experimenting with different clew configurations. There has been positive progress so far but we want to make sure that the ideas are thoroughly tested and offer a genuine performance improvement before making the final judgment.

The work on our free race sail continues and for 2011 it will be named “TITANGS and incorporate a moderate wide sleeve for cams-off rigging and improved performance. We have received samples of all the sizes now and I’ve done quite a few recuts to get the sleeve fit perfect and make sure the leech twist is correct. They are turning out very nicely and we have been getting some excellent test results on the water. While on the racing theme it was great to see Phil out there ripping at the US nationals. He was truly a dominant force, winning the overall national title. Nice work Phil! Aloha, Artur Szpunar

July begins the rest of the year and the results are in... there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Art and I have been thrashing around some new stuff for Phil to hammer test, and so far there’s encouraging results. Based on numerous requests from otherwise satisfied sailors, we made the sleeve on the Titan wide enough to rig the sail cams-off and will designate this improvement with the name Titan-GS, because the easy rigging also goes with Great Slalom, as in real performance in a cruising package. Neoprene sleeve closure will bring it to race grade and keep water out. Because Art is so comfortable working with the dimensions and requirements of the top line race TR’s it has been reasonable to achieve our goals and add a small performance boost as well.

Tr-6 becomes ??? for the rest of the year. This is an area that always has a period of possibilties around July. This summer there has been great racing in our local series, with many more racers coming on board so it is possible to watch a variety of shapes and sizes of people and how the sails relate to them in hard conditions. This is the ideal ’lab’ for comparative analysis also, because the other developers and testers for competitive brands are always on the course as well. The binoculars and camera are put to good use. July is good in Maui. The highlights mostly came at the end of the month though. The U.S. Nationals and North American Formula Championships were in San Francisco in perfect conditions for both FW and Slalom to be held. The race was hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club, with pretty flawless execution. And we looked super good in the end thanks to

the fantastic sailing of Phil McGain, who won the overall and the new Bill Wier Perpetual Trophy by getting second in FW to Paolo dos Ries (current #2) in FW, winning the Long Distance, and getting second in slalom. Women’s, Junior, and Freestyle also had MauiSail power.

It was my mother’s 95th birthday right after the event so that mixed it up fine. Meanwhile, Cornelia, our boat, is inside the harbor, taking a rest from the mad re-build schedule. The next round is rebuilding the sails, and doing rigging work on the reefing and sheet handling so we can get her out to do some interesting things. The rig will work like new and have lots of upgrades for making shorthanded sailing more fun. We closed out the month with a fine showing in the Hawaii State Slalom Championships, on a day that saw lots of crazy crashes and high speed mayhem. Anyone who thinks they know about slalom racing should come here in July and throw it in the ring. There are only a few places I’ve been to that can rival the quality of our local race organization and the quality of the conditions and if you can hang with the guys who live here, who just sail for the fun of it (and the occasional trophy), you are certainly proving a high level. Maui in July, it’s the best it gets. Big Aloha, Barry Spanier
