I love the sea That’s where I feel good

Hey hey my Friends, Barry wrote these sentences in his Book: A falling flower reminds me of the wind As it blows my way. The past cannot dictate the present and the future cannot be seen. Change is healthy for us all and is necessary for growth. Go with what you got. Find out more at www.barryspanier.com

You should really get this book. I am truly blown away from all what this guy has been thru living and cruising the sea and after all that still being a great humble person. He lost everything got the strength to build up, face reality, learn from the past and be the best sail maker and much more. Much respect Barry You seem to be like the pink Energizer bunny. No matter how hard the situation you keep going and going… :) June didn’t show any great days of wind on Bonaire.. Some days you could feel the wind picking up but it’s just another teasing wind. I worked at Bonaire Windsurf Place to fill my days instead of doing nothing. Working at the windsurf school I met a lot of tourists that really are amazed to know me in person and to know that even though I am a top freestyler that I still work at the beach.. come on people… you think I am an office guy?? hahaha. Can’t see myself working in an office. I love the sea so I prefer to work at the beach cause that’s where I feel good. I sailed probably only 4-5 days this month and each time I went out was for maybe

1-2 hours.. and each time I went out and come back to the beach my foot got swollen and I couldn’t really put enough body pressure on my right foot (ankle) so I rest a day and try it the next day but the same thing. Went to the doctor 14th of June and she told me the only way to get you to rest is to put your foot in a cast. Slap… same day my foot was in a cast. Nothing with the bones, just small ligaments problems and I had to put the cast for ten days. But I insist for only a week because if doesn’t get better in eight days then it won’t get better in ten days. So the 21st June I took it off and my foot was still a bit swollen but the pain in the ligaments were gone. I could move my foot without feeling the pain so that was good. But because of the cast I had problems walking normal. I went straight to the therapist to get some training and in three days I started walking okay, and then he told me to buy some stuff at the pharmacy and for me to use it 3 -4 times a day. That helped a lot. The GREAT thing that happened this month was getting a deal with MYSTIC BRANDING INTERNATIONAL, so after Lanzarote I am heading to Holland to pick up the Mystic Hardware & Apparel. 24th june my flight to: BON-AMS-MAD-LAN(ACE) together with the Bonaire crew. 25th June: arrive in Lanzarote… no wind and a bit cold for this time of year. 26th June: No wind. Chill the whole day at the hotel and did some internet. 27th June: Rigged up the Loco 4.8 and sailed for about three hours. Then the wind died completely. 28th June: Rigged up the Loco 5.2 and sailed for one hour and half then the wind was gone with a struggle to get back to the beach. Well until now the wind looks pretty bad for the first days of the PWA Freestyle Lanzarote/Costa Teguise competition so we will see what happen. Catch me on the next report. C ya’ll. Taty Frans NB-9

The month of June passed soo fast and involved a lot of traveling, to represent at various slalom events around the globe. After the Wild Winds in Venezuela back to Europe to collect the full racing quiver and then we drove down to Spain from Holland to the Costa Brava for the next PWA world cup event. It was a 1500 km drive to Saint Per Pescador that didn’t start of so well, with a broken tire and a worsening fuel leak, but sometimes things take a slightly different course then planned and you just have to roll with the punches. The drive was long but fun together with a friend, much preferred from travelling by plane though expensive through Europe paying toll and fuel, but as for instance Ryan Air raised there prices for excess baggage it was still a save decision to drive in stead of fly. In the end it was nice to have all gear there and not having the concious packing for airport check-in. The event started off well and in the semi finals of the first round I finished just in front of Micah in 4th place qualifying and finally battling into 5th place during the final. Unfortunately in the second elimination the wind died, my heat was the last one to count for the day and I got stuck on my Medium board not qualifying from the first round. I was devastated after already having a 16th in Korea, but by no means it was over with still many days to go in the contest and an ok wind forecast. For a few days I was still in 5th but once there was some more heats sailed up to the finals they counted the race #2 even though not completely finishing and I dropped from 5th to 23rd with no more racing. It was such a disappointment and now having 2 mediocre results in 2010 PWA Slalom that I decided to compete in the Texel / Hollland at the European championships. Originally this event is the famous Round Texel catamaran race. We were on a tight schedule as the registration 1600 km away was on a Monday following the prize giving at La Balena on Sunday when we left heading North and just managed to make it for the last ferry over on registration day. A 12th place was not the greatest start but in the next round I got in 2nd and finally finished in 4th place on Texel as the first Dutchman. At the end of June it was possible to dust of the Wave gear for some pre contest training on Gran Canaria. Unfortunately due to the recession in Spain it would be a 4 day event only no Slalom discipline at the most high wind spot on tour this time; so far the 7.0 has not been used yet in a heat not to mention the smaller sizes TR-6. Maui, I miss you! Peter Volwater H-24

June was a blast for us over here in the Gorge, between the first wave competition to be held on the West Coast in 10 years just a few hours south of us, and the fun crowd that rolled through for the CGWA Windfest, it was great to be a part of these awesome windsurfing events. First off on the agenda was the Pistol River Wavebash. Congratulations to MauiSails’ own Ingrid Larouche for taking 1st place in the Women’s division! Ingrid spent a solid amount of time on her new 2.9 Legend, and with the strong winds we had she was stoked to have the added smaller size to the line. All the girls sailed great, and in the end, Ingrid’s forwards and solid wave-rides gave her what she needed to take 1st! I had a blast competing for my first time in a wave comp, made it through a couple heats in the expert division. Rick Whidden also showed up just in time to compete as well! Congratulations also to Royn Bartholdi for taking 3rd in the Masters Division! The whole event was great, with riders like Matt and Kevin Pritchard, Francisco Goya, Robby Naish, Keith Teboul, Kai Katchadourian, Timo Mullen, and more coming out to support. www. wavebash.weebly.com Returning from the Wavebash on the longest day of the year, June 21st, we were welcomed by good weather and solid winds! With good days everywhere from the Hatch out to Arlington, it felt like summer was finally here. And there was even enough of a breeze this year to get people out on the water for the CGWA Windfest, which had windsurfers from all over come down to the Event Site to check out some of the latest toys. In the lighter winds we demoed mainly Switches and Titans, which was nice for people to try out our flat-water line, as typically up here most of the demos are focused around our smaller Legends, Globals, and Locos. I’ve also gotten a chance to get out and spend some time on the TR-6s, 6.3 and 7.0, as the US Nationals are right around the corner, and have just been blown away! Really looking forward to heading down to the bay in a couple weeks! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

Our Focus this past month has turned over to freeride sails as well as starting to hatch ideas for the next race sails. Our water conditions here on Maui help us keep this train of thought as the north swells disappear and all that remains are the trade winds producing chop and small wind-swell. We are giving the Titan range of 2-3 cam, 7-batten slalom/free race sails considerable attention this season. We have already built a complete round of

new samples designed to rig cams off with a moderately wider lower sleeve. In addition to the easy rigging benefits, the goal is to give the new sails higher overall performance to rival a race sail while maintaining the great power, light feeling and easy handling that the Titan has become known for.

representation at all age and ability levels. There are always a few top PWA guys competing in the pro class and it is a great time to gage our performance against “the other guys and start getting the ideas flowing as to how to make the next round of race sails even faster than the last.

The month of June on Maui means the start of the Maui Race series. This is a great bi-monthly event and MauiSails always has great local and visitor

A bit here and there In June we had the second PWA of the year. Again we had barely no wind the whole week so not much was done. Unfortunately I had a crash on a jibe on my second heat so I was out on the first elimination. The conditions were again this year gusty side shore wind from the right. After that I came back to Argentina and sailed quite a lot on the 6.3 and 7.0. Both sails feel really good, a little bit more locked in than last years. I really like them. On the last days of June we started working on the new school of the club where I sail. We own it now with the shop we opened last december. The winter has just started so we will use this months to rebuilt and have it all nicely prepared and better looking to start the summer season in early september. On the next days I will fly to Puerto Rico for a race. I’ve been in Puerto Rico many time since the past and it is great to visit old friends there. Then I will go 10 days early to Fuerte to have some good training there before the event. Aloha, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel.

The Moon in June.... I saw it lots. June was the month of great local race results and the beginning of the feeling that there are more and more people who have discovered the MauiSails "feel" and performance and are happily spreading the word. Feedback from so many different places is telling us we are finally reaching a critical mass of individual recognition and positive enjoyment. To me this is far more important and exciting than any ’pro’ results because it represents the satisfaction and growing enthusiasm to appreciate what we work so hard to achieve... subtle power with easy control and light responsive handling. This is what makes windsurfing the true joy. Early mornings of packing and shipping cue in nicely with conversations with Art about the tension connection and the ways to get where we want with the shapes and luff curves. The work on the 2011 Freeride sails (Titan, Pursuit, Aloha, Inspire) is getting into a groove of consistency now that the tension is being quantified regularly with the load cell. We are finding this to be the most valuable tool when it comes to making the feel progressive from size to size. There’s no replacement for that big fat digital number. You can’t fool the cell. Personally, June was mast month for Cornelia . The rig probably hadn’t been out of the boat since 1989 according to the log book, and a recent trip to the top to inspect it showed me many scary things. So in the first days of June we hired a crane and with the help of good friends, we put it into the swirling dirt of the State of Hawaii’s ’boatyard’ at Maalaea. I say ’boatyard’ with a smile because here on Maui there are no yards, except for this patch of red dirt near the harbor where the wind blows thirty every day and the sun beats on your head. You aren’t allowed to use running water, and the electricity that comes from the base of a lamp pole is sketchy at best, and all for a high fee. Like we say here "Lucky you live Hawaii, brah." There were broken tangs, totally corroded fasteners, clevis pins that exploded around the cotter pins... all bad news and for us, just lucky we didn’t lose the rig sailing the boat. So we stripped every piece of hardware on both mast and boom, built a new mast head fitting, welded all the leftover holes from the radar and some other odd parts we removed, and then sanded it to bare metal. The moon reference comes because we were forced to paint during the night when it was cool and less windy, although there were still times when you would get dust blown in your eyes while working, even at midnight. At home I made all new wires using compression terminals, and then we replaced all the old tangs, tang bolts, and fasteners, put on new mast track for easy sliding batten cars, rewired the electrics and put on some larger used winches for the halyards.

On June 30, she got her ’new’ mast back in and is now resting, waiting for some parts, a mainsail recut, and all the little rigging tasks. If you go to www. lahainafishcompany.com, they have a webcam that can be steered all along the ocean front and through the mooring field so you can check it out. She’s close in, just to the right of a couple of larger cats and a small fishing boat. We are planning on sailing again by the end of the month, and will be ready for some Fall photoshooting. MauiSails Boom Front End A good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast. MauiSails frontend fits 37mm or 40mm diameter carbon tubes. Will fit most booms on the market. You can buy it in MauiSails online store at www.mauisails.com

Racing most of the time.... Windsurfing, running, cycling, swimming

A busy month slalom racing and enjoying the Hawaii Summer. We had two Kanaha slalom series already in June and I had decent success both weeks, winning my age group both weeks and placing third in the pro the first week. The wind died last Saturday in the afternoon so we couldn’t finish the pro division. I’m happy with the way I raced, the sails were feeling great and everyone else using the TR-6’s were really stoked. Kanaha is full of MauiSails on race day, even Rick Whidden our trusty sales manager was out there showing his stuff, great to see. I did two triathlons this month, the first being the half Ironman on the Big Island, a good time of 5 hours 51 minutes, then the South Maui Triathlon the next week, which I achieved 4th in my age group in 2 hours 37 minutes for an Olympic distance triathlon. Time to cut back on some training and then in August I’ll build again and prepare for Ironman Western Australia in December. Yo! Phil McGain
