April… a most taxing month. In April U.S. citizens always have tax day to look forward to (actually they can look forward to another month of working just to pay for it J) and in every other way, April was hardcore demanding. I don’t recall a month like this for a long time. We had several very large incoming shipments that needed heavy work to handle finding room to store and catalog, as well as getting a series of really big outgoing shipments together for destinations all over the country. I had a weird ‘toe-stub’ injury to my foot that kept me a bit hobbled but it was good to tough through it. All better now. And the shipments out always make anything feel better. Art and I have been having fun working on the final touches for the wave and freestyle sails, making them soft and easy without giving up power and speed, so important for hot wave moves. Adjusting the outlines is leading to lots of thinking about how far we can go with this and if we can take the methodology farther into the new race sails, which we have to be working on much earlier this year because of the new PWA rules. This year product registration is in October, so we will need to push the development and testing forward, but there will be lots of opportunity to test in real race conditions over summer though.

Following on in the taxing department, April was the month of the engine room. First we moved the starting batteries forward and lower to get them out of the heat of the engine. Then this exposed engine areas not seen yet, and there were suddenly a couple extra jobs taking care of the leaking fuel transfer pump and the heat exchanger gasket. I got in there and totally cleaned the whole engine and found even more little fun things, and now the entire engine room is getting painted fresh white, the motor as well. When it’s done, you will be able to see those little leaks before they get out of hand, and there is now plenty of room and light to be able to do the service. The goal is to be motoring again by the next news letter, ready for summer photo sessions. Aloha Barry Spanier

April was a pretty special month for me As I mentioned in my last newsletter, we had just started the photoshoot at the end of March, and it continued into the first part of April. It was a blast to sail with the rest of the team and try out the new gear for next year. Not that it needs to be said, but dang, I must say I’m pretty stoked with the sails, they feel incredible and look sick! In February I started working full-time for EpicSessions.tv. We have been developing a new competition series called the RedLine Challenge, where athletes in individual based action sports compete head to head for different objective measurements. April was the waiting period for Oxbow’s Ride The Sky, where 20 of the world’s top windsurfers were invited to compete at Hookipa Beach Park for highest jump and best trick. For the event, now part of the RedLine Challenge, we were going to provide live broadcasting via our website of not only video action, but also live updates of the rider’s jump heights as they landed! Though the perfect day never rolled through, we did execute a test-run of the new format with some of windsurfing’s best riders, and we were stoked to launch this unique new format for action sports with windsurfing. Stay tuned to EpicSessions.tv over the next week or so for a recap vid of the test day, and a peek at what’s to come!

I had a couple more good days on the water, then packed everything up and flew back to Hood River. I landed Friday night, and by Saturday mid-day was rigging up my 4.2 Legend at Dougs. It was sunny and warm, though the water was still al little frigid, but a great welcome back to the Gorge, and I can’t wait for the summer! After the session at Dougs, it was back to unpacking, then packing up the van to head down to Santa Cruz, CA, for the first stop of the American Windsurfing Tour at Waddell Creek. Really excited for a wave tour in the states, it’s something I’ve dreamt about for a long time, and can’t wait to head down and hopefully get some great conditions! Wind never stops on Maui Maui is great and the wind just never stops! There was a lot of testing going on while attending the Fanatic photo shoot. At the same time keeping up with weight training getting fit before the start of the next bunch of events. On the water I just feel faster and faster having the TR-7 race sails completely dialed in. I feel like these are definitely the nicest race sails I have ever laid in my hands. Man, I’m ready to do some races now, this break seems too long! The wind did slow down a touch making it possible to get the bigger sails wet too; actually its kinda nice to just cruise and not get blown out of the water, like the usual Maui wind experience. Living in Paia has been good; having been here for a couple months straight certainly gets you into a healthy routine. One day we drove around the Haleakala as a reminder of how magnificent and beautiful the island really is with its diverse landscape. Not a day goes by without appreciating to be here and to live this lifestyle getting in the ocean every day. The nightlife is pretty average, but its pretty nice to wake up early in the morning and be full of energy and getting things done. I must be getting older haha. After the photo shoots it was definitely nice to get my life back and being able to do whatever and whenever just doing my thing. Then comes the time to leave and get on the plane with the windsurfing gear, and the man at the check in says; I hope you have a big sponsor..... Good winds to you all, hope you having a blast. April turns

A fantastic month on Maui for wind and waves. Actually the month was one big blurrrrrr. Sailing, testing, working, Bogo was still here so we were busy shooting and doing video’s. Starting to get tuned up on the TR-7’s and they are feeling so good around the race course. Been setting bouys and getting in some serious training here on Maui. Anyone want to join us, please come and enjoy the action of Kanaha before race season begins.

Not much more I can remember except spending time on the new sails and really enjoying the progress we have made, looking forward to the race season and continued feedback from our customers. Aloha, Phil McGain Photo : Bogodesign.net

The winter season has come and gone here on Maui and we are now putting the final touches on the 2012 wave sails in preparation for June production. The 2012 Legend and Ghost-XT ranges have experienced the most significant progress in several years. The outlines have been evolved to be more compact, featuring shorter luff lengths and higher cut foot while keeping the boom lengths the same. Shaping and luff curves have been refined to give the new sails perfect balance, soft feel and ultra-light handling. We will also be adding an exciting new Ghost-XT 4.5, designed around a 370 mast. The light weight and softness of

the new 4.5 design were giving the sail such great range, both in terms of light air pumping and high wind handling that it influenced us to further refine the other sail sizes to have similar characteristics. This was when our trusty load cell came in handy as we were able to determine the exact tension relationships that would be necessary through the different sizes in order to duplicate the handling characteristics. I’ve been sailing the new designs all winter and am genuinely excited this year as we have achieved a great enough performance breakthrough that it is actually improving my wave sailing, allowing me to get tighter into more critical parts of the wave.

We had Taty on island for a while during April and it was a perfect time to get some work done on the Loco freestyle sails. We checked out his tuning settings that allow him to have that special “pop factor and took these into consideration when refining the sail designs. The Locos have had refinements in shaping and luff curve to give them the responsive power and soft, light handling which help to make the newest moves a reality. On the materials front we are incorporating our exclusive C595 light weight X-ply in the Legend, Global and Switch. The material is about half way between the ultra-light technora (used in Ghost XT) and traditional X-ply in terms of weight and has proven durability. We have strategically located it in portions of the upper sail body panels where weight is most noticeable while maintaining the traditional X-ply in the high impact areas. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

No wind on Bonaire It’s been a good month for me, getting back on Maui to sail on the new Loco sails and having the chance to meet with the whole MauiSails team. I spent ten days in Maui, doing photoshoots and testing the 2012 Loco, then we did some adjustments that made the sail better than the 2011 Loco. It’s always a challenge to improve a sail, but once you get some ideas and you put them into the sail you learn more and after all you get better sails. I am happy with the 2012 Loco’s, they just keep getting better. More easy handling, feels lighter. The photoshoot went great, even though Maui weather can change in an instant. Getting on back on Bonaire from Maui, there’s been not much wind, it’s been really warm. So basically it was a waiting game to get some sailing before going to Austria. But the wind didn’t blow, so that kinda feels weird not to be able to windsurf for about 22 days. If I can compare to last year where I sailed the whole month of April, and this year getting nothing is a bad sign, but we got to live with the reality. Take care peeps.. Taty Frans
