July and Canary Islands go hand in hand for me, in fact, I can’t even remember the last July I spent elsewhere! In that sense I consider myself lucky, because where else on earth are the conditions so consistent in that time of the year and with the prestigeous Canary Island PWA tour there is lots of incredible and exciting action to witness and be a part of. After the guys opened with the Freestyle event on Lanzarote I joined the second event in Pozo - part I of the Wave tour 2011. Even though my training has been all about Slalom I think I sailed really well and improved on some of the manouvres while the double loop I have been making since 1996 is still one of the highest scoring jumps. After not having tried one in a year, I was stoked to land the first attempt perfectly next to the bunker in my heat against Musso and beat him on jumps - although lost the heat in a 2-1 decision because of his double taka, no match for my traditional wave riding. For sure weighing 99 kgs is not an advantage but I got real close to beating the ex world champ who I drew in the 2nd round already not being seeded. On Tenerife it was another close decision with Dario Ojeda after beating a couple guys, it was a little disappointing to finish 9th in the single and come up against Browzinho in the double and only finish 17th. But I could definitely feel the improvement in those Legend 2011 sails, allowing me to sail with better balance and stability.

Last but certainly not least the Slalom competition on Fuerteventura. It was fun to swap disciplines and set the mind on waves for a while, but what I have always appreciated from Slalom is that the first guy over the line wins, simple as that! No judging or subjective results. All in all you don’t sail as much in waves as we do competing in Slalom, and day in day out you are really competing a lot more in Slalom getting more mileage out of your entry fee. I got off a great start in 2nd place after the first day, over the course of the event I had some good moments with awesome speed, probably the fastest guy out there sometimes on the TR7 6.3 and my Fanatic Falcon 85. Overall I finished in 8th place having just a couple too many 2nd round-outs, so the inconsistency was a little lost there. Next stop is in Turkey starting August 8th and another chance to compete with the best windsurfers in the world, before the final events of the year in Denmark and Sylt in September. Wow the year is really speeding by!

"...this year was the worst year in freestyle judging ever." Photos : PWA/Carter

Ola Amigos, Que tal? Seems like I have been traveling so much that I have been speaking Spanish, Dutch, English and Papiamentu all together at the same time in less then 24 hours. After the PWA Lanzarote freestyle world cup I had to fly back to Bonaire the next day to be home for my Daughter GIANNA’s first birthday that was on the 8th of July. I had a 9o’clock flight on the 4th to Madrid, then at 13:00hours to Amsterdam then at 23:30 to Bonaire. It was quit a nice connection and it kinda felt good to be back home for my daughter’s birthday even though it was hard for me to to travel back and forth. Jet lag. But it’s about things you do for an important person in your life. Her birthday Party was very BIG and nice and I was happy to be present. I even helped with the decoration and the preparation for the party and this made me feel more happy. MY BABY GIRL SHE IS GROWING.

Having a ninth place finish in the freestyle in Lanzarote was kinda frustrating because there was so many mistakes done by the PWA judges and it was impossible to understand what they like to see and when you feel you are doing bad you win, and when you feel you do good, you lose. I guess this year was the worst year in freestyle judging ever. There were heats where I sat down at the beach and watched and could easily see who won, but the somehow it’s diffrent results. Well, getting back home for like 10 days was good. I had to rest after all the events I did back to back and also traveling so much was tiring. On the 15th I travel back to Fuerteventura to meet up with my brother Tonky and Bjorn, and also to get some early training days. Fuerteventura was windy and it was good to test and FINALLY get the Loco 4.0 out. All I can say is I really really like the 2012 Loco 4.0 a lot and this is a BIG improvement comparing to the 2011 loco 4.0.

Our Experience, Your Reward

The 4.0 2012 handling, power, and balance is really amazing and I am so grateful to sail with it. I had 5 days sailing on the 4.0 and 1 day on the 4.4 loco 2012 and everything was going great and it just felt fantastic. Then suddenly the wind died down just when the event started and I had to get back on the 4.8 Loco for the remainder of the events.

Bad luck struck when my downhaul rope broke just in the start of my heat against Tonky. That changed everything in my head and I lost concentration and Tonky took the chance to bust some moves while I was fixing back the downhaul setting. So at the end I finished 5th in Fuerteventura. It’s not what I have expected because I was in good form to score higher. I stayed in Fuerteventura for another week so that I could compete in the slalom. It’s always a crazy and fun slalom event here. Take care amigos Taty Frans NB-9

Racing a lot in July A busy month for me, but a very successful one. I was back at the US Nationals again in Berkeley, just downwind from the famous Chrissy Fields. We had a great event, sailing everyday and meeting lots of enthusiastic windsurfers. I managed to get second place overall, winning the Long Distance race, placing third in Formula and second in Slalom‌.oh yeh and winning the Grand Masters Formula division. Before I went to the mainland I competed in a Maui Race Series event which I won both my age group and Pro division, then when I got back from the mainland I went on to defend my State Title in both the Men’s 4049 and Pro division at Kanaha. We have started working on the TR-8 already and had good success on some of the Formula sizes based on what I learned at the US Nationals and recent feedback we had received from Team Riders, and we are starting to get a good feel for the direction for the Slalom sizes with adjusting some of the twist and aiming to get a lighter feel in our hands. staying Gorge area this month July was another terrific month in Hood River. The wind was not as reliable as usual for this time of year, but that gave me the opportunity, or forced me (depending on your view) to take advantage of all the other amazing activities Hood River has to offer. I’ve been having a lot of fun mountain biking this month, at one point it was safe to say I was biking more than windsurfing, which surprisingly I didn’t mind one bit. My friend also took me down to the skate park a few times, which besides being shown up by a bunch of 12-year old groms killing it, it was awesome to skate again. There’s a lot of carry over between the different sports, biking a loop full of banks and berms, skating in a bowl, or carving down big swells at the wall lit on 3.7, it’s surprising how much the rush is the same. uche

I was bummed about not being able to travel this month to the US Nationals or to the AWT stop in Punta San Carlos. The activities mentioned above happened only after a solid amount of time at my desk, as we at EpicSessions are getting pretty busy, which is awesome! Unfortunately I just couldn’t be in two places at once. However, that didn’t stop me from sneaking in a quick race and wave fix. Just last week in the final days of the month I got to sneak out for a day trip to Oceanside and had a blast sailing my 5.0 Ghost in overhead Oregon waves. The next day it was back to Hood River and down to the event site for the Gorge Cup Series. I missed the first day, so unfortunately did not rank in the overall for the weekend, but did race on Sunday on my TR-7 7.0 and had my best finish of 2nd overall, and was stoked! it’s race sails time

We’ve been busy with race sail designs, re-cuts and testing here on Maui. It appears that we have established quite a nice direction with the evolution of the TR sails as we work towards the TR-8. This season we are focused on expanding wind range even further and have been moving in that direction through refinements in the twist and sail body profiles. Maintaining a nice locked profile in the lower body for stability with a very progressive leech twist up to an improved release in the upper sail body has been giving the sails a great balanced, soft and light feeling even in the upper limits of their wind range.

The Titan GS sail range is also getting some attention and will borrow a few elements from The TR race development but in a more forgiving, 7 batten, 2-3 cam package. Weather wise, summer is almost over and it doesn’t even really feel like it ever came. Lot’s of winter-like rainy days, gusty easterly winds and fortunately some nice NE wind swell have made it feel more like an extended spring on the North shore. I’ve been getting some fun jumping and small wave smacking sessions on the 2012 Legend and Ghost-XT’s. The new sails have such great range that they not only give nice soft, balanced power slogging around in light wind winter wave conditions, but also handle perfectly in gusty, choppy, maxed out “summer” jump sessions. July 2011...

To retire at sixty-five...? I don’t think so. This is all way too interesting to give up. It seems hard to believe that July 2011 brought me to that formerly magic ’gold watch’ number. I sure don’t relate to that or feel that way at all. And since Art has been charging so hard with ideas, it has made watching the racing results and feedback satisfying as we get many indications that we are on a good track. Getting into the slalom season with new protos to test and being able to use the sails in race conditions is boosting our confidence for the early delivery of registered designs for next year. The obvious boatspeed of Peter and Taty, regardless of racing results, is most encouraging. I am loving watching Taty especially as he is sailing with only three sails registered and has no special fins or boards. He is fast and makes the turns look easy. I hope Peter and he will bring us back some more info to keep making the sails better. I’ve also been checking out a new compact wave sail that gets way beyond anything we’ve tried for awhile. I think Art’s growing understanding of the tension development and the continued use of the load cell is making it possible to push farther with good results quickly. This Deviant 4.7 will fit right in with trends towards shorter boards and wilder aerial manuevers. Plus it’s quite a bit lighter as well. If the concept proves worthy, there could be a limited range available for spring. For now, I really liked what I saw. July is the birthday month for my mother as well. She came here determined to sail on her namesake, Cornelia, and also wanted to spend the night on board. This being her 96th, and there being some high tides, getting her on and off was interesting. But she is tough and still nimble, so getting up the ladder and climbing over the rail was not too bad. Once she was on board, the rest was easy. So for her trouble, she got two ’sleeps’ on board over two weekends, three days of sailing with her friends (some came from L.A. and Portland), and we ushered her into another year with many congratulations. I think this was the perfect gift and she had the smiles and tears to prove it. I’m a very lucky human to be so blessed with an active, happy parent, while I turned 65. May you all have as many good days as we have had. Sailing days, especially. Aloha Barry Spanier
