SOUTH AMERICA

August has been a really action packed month for me. I had never been to South America before and with the American tour I got to know Mexico and now Peru. Straight after the San Carlos event in Mexico I decided to go train in Pacasmayo (Peru) for the next event of the AWT, so I arrived there and met Fabrice Beaux who had the same idea. It was really cool because we had great conditions and almost no one had arrived yet so it was a really relax atmosphere and that’s important for the concentration. I’m also super lucky because my father and my younger brother come and it was important for us to be together there. They arrived one week before the contest and scored epic conditions but unfortunately at this time I got the Peruvian sickness and was out of service for a couple days. After this we still had some session all together and that was perfect for us to get to know the wave. Then everyone arrived and everything went so fast, we run the single elimination in the first days. It was conditions that I really like so I had so much fun and took the first place in the single.

But I was even more happy for my brother because he improved a lot during this trip and it was amazing to see him passing all his heat and in the end making the final with me. That was a big moment for us, he was ripping and he totally deserved his 3rd place. After this day the conditions went down for a couple days but we were supposed to have a good swell for the last 2 days of the contest. Everyone was pushing to make the double elimination and I didn’t wanted to say but I had lot of pressure, but on the last day they could make the whole double until like 6.45 pm and almost dark, I was ready anyway but right before my heat they stopped it because they couldn’t see the sails anymore and I even had a hard time seeing the wave coming trough. Right after this we had the price giving and I took a bus to join the Don’t Let Go crew in Lobitos for our last trip together to finalize this movie project. It was a successful trip because we scored sick conditions and I can’t wait to see the final results of DLG. Next stop is going to be Hatteras on the east coast for the 5th event of the AWT and then finally back home after 2 months of traveling. Salut Camille Juban

AUGUST WAS AGAIN A VERY BUSY MONTH July ended very nicely with the celebration of my daughter Dakotah’s first birthday on July 31. I unfortunately missed here birth while I was racing in Fuerte last year but this year I made it back in time from Fuerte and we had a great party for her with family and friends, a perfect way to end July and welcome in August. August was again a very busy month for me and it would involve some serious switching gears with the Formula Worlds in Latvia and straight into the PWA slalom in Turkey. But August is also a very exciting month for me and sail development, this is when we really start the serious R&D on the next years racing sails and the first couple of weeks did not disappoint. Since I was only going to be in Maui the first two weeks of August, Phil, Art, Barry and myself did not waste any time getting straight into it. In this two weeks we tested about 9 different slalom proto’s from 6.6 to 8.4 as well as 10.0 and 11.0 Formula sails. There were some great improvements and changes in both slalom and formula sails, pretty exciting to get such good results on the first real batch of 2013 protos. It was going to be nice because I would be able to use the new Formula sails at the worlds but unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to use the new slalom designs quite yet. Its hard to test something and know that it is better but not be able to use it, maybe

one day we will change back to having open racing in PWA, those were the days. I am definitely looking forward to more development on the TR9 or what ever they may be called and getting the slalom sizes on the race course. I also had my court date for my hunting infractions and it went fairly smooth, they threw out two of the three citations. I did have to get processed though, fingerprints and mug shot, I felt like such a criminal. Still have another date to go to in September and hope to be able to find out that the third one should be thrown out as well, what a pain in the ass. After a good two weeks of early formula sessions and solid slalom test sessions it was time to head out for the crunch time of August, first stop Latvia and the Formula Worlds. My trip from Maui to Latvia took a little bit longer than planned after my flight from Dallas to Frankfurt was cancelled and I had to spend and extra 24 hours in Dallas. This would mean I would arrive in Latvia on registration day in the eve so wouldn’t get any time to get on the water before racing. I did make it ok and so did all my gear and with the jet lag I was up early and down at the beach getting all set up and ready. The forecast looked good for the event but maybe a little to good or to windy should I say.

There were enough guys at the Worlds that they had two fleets and the way the rules work is each fleet races four races and then you take your three best races get an average finishing position and then this counts as one score towards the overall. I did not know this before but was glad that it worked this way because with the first four races in light, gusty and shifty winds and with my jet lag all I could do is manage to make it to the gold fleet and use this as a discard. The second day of the event the wind was a bit better early but with some problems on the course with buoys we didn’t manage to get the gold fleet racing started. The third day proved to be to much for the race crew as the wind blew 20-30knots straight onshore all day and unfortunately for one of the crew who suffered two broken fingers trying to get the committee boat set in the rough seas they called it a day with no racing. Day four was when it all happened, with lighter onshore winds and four races in the bag I managed to climb my way back up to 7th from 34th. Feeling better in some wind I was looking forward to the last day but the forecast was a little bleak. Most of the last day we sat around as the wind and rain came and went all day never really amounting to enough to race. It was getting close to the time to call it off and the wind came up just enough to get a race started. I was on my 12 and felt fine off the start but just about the time I got to the top mark the wind backed right off. Most of the fleet spent the rest of the race not planning but race director felt it was good enough to validate the race.

I did manage to finish the race when about half of the fleet did not but spending about 15 minutes not planning of a race that took me 35 minutes didn’t really help my overall. Not the best way to finish an event, a bit of a sour note on what was really a good event in a great location, but that is Formula racing in Europe and you need to be prepared to race in that.

I was lucky to be able to sell or leave all my formula gear in Latvia with Lithuanian MauiSails team rider Karolis so I didn’t have to worry about taking it all with me to the slalom event in Turkey, it is always so much easier to travel without gear. It was still a long day from Liepaja to Alalcati, arriving at my hotel in Alacati at 2am I was beat. The forecast wasn’t looking so good for the next day though so I would get a day to recover which was very nice. The rest of the week the forecast was great and the wind blew its socks off. I spent most of the first day of actual racing in Alacati on my 7.0 and 59 slalom board, both of which rarely get used there. It felt great to be back on the small slalom

equipment after a week of Formula and I had some pretty good results in the first few rounds. The middle few rounds were a bit rough, the wind was not in the normal direction it was a bit more onshore than usual which made it oscillate up and down a lot making it hard to choose the right sail size. Two rounds in a row I was the first heat of the day and this was always the hardest wind to sail in and I got caught out both times on to small of gear and was not able to advance to the semi finals. I picked it back up a bit near the end of the event getting back into contention for a podium spot but then on the final day I had a major mental error and mistimed my first round heat and went over the line early along with three other guys. I guess I was just a little to fired up for that last round, wanting to move up to badly and just pushed it to hard. Haven’t had many over earlies this year but that was a pretty bad time to have one. Well that already brings me a couple of days into September, so it is back on the road home to Maui take a bit of a break and get back into testing the new sails and my new slalom boards which arrived just before I left and

HOW MANY MILES I HAVE DONE ALREADY? As I am beginning to write down August report to you readers I was thinking about how many miles I could have done this year already..??... and still I have more flights to make before the end of this year. Well KLM just sent me my Fflying Blue miles update and it seems that next year I have another free VIP lounge pass :) How sweet is that.

As far my month went I I can’t complain about anything. After Fuerteventura I went back home to "Bonaire" sailing as much as I can, took my daughter on my board and we were having so much fun sailing together. Check the MauiSail Facebook page, there is a little 45sec video. :) Back on Bonaire I had two and a half weeks where I spent my days fixing boards for the windsurf school "BWP" and also the rest of the days hours I was spending time on the water on my Loco sails, freestyling and spending at least one hour a day on my slalom gear. TR8 7.6... this sail seems to be my favorite. Going sailing enough was the key with no day rest is my goal. How could I love windsurfing so much? At times I wonder, well maybe it’s because I have such good equipment or maybe it’s just love for the sport. My time spent on Bonaire was great. Soon I was booking my ticket and packing my luggage and gears to Turkey. Traveling to Alacati was a looooonnnngg trip.I traveled two days to get to Alacati. i didn’t sleep for like 24 hours but at the end I arrived safely in Izmir and made it to Alacati to find this place to be just amazingly one of the best spot for slalom sailing. With my 12th place finish I felt like again I proved that if I put my mind to it, I can be good at it. Slalom sailing at such a high level is tense, but it’s also really fun and I enjoy being able to sail against the best guys. I was better in the high wind conditions in the first two days and really wished it could have kept blowing like that then it was easier to get a top five finish. My TR-8 are working really good and I am really happy to have these sails. The sails are not the problem...it is me that has to stop making mistakes. But I am learning and I am not far from making my self better. But I am happy with my result. As I am finishing this report I am still in Alacati testing new prototype boards for Starboard. Take care Taty Frans NB-9

HELLO FROM WINDY SAN FRANCISCO! It’s been an incredible season sailing almost every day on the 4.2 and 4.7 Legend and 5.2 Loco. The 40 members of our sailing group have been working hard to emulate Taty, with some varying degree of success. This season I learned the Flaka and Shove-It and have been having an awesome time trying to go as big with those moves as I can in all conditions. Other MauiSails freestyle riders like Kevin Kan and Sofien Sehiri have been incredibly helpful in speeding up the learning curve for us aspiring freestylers. Without the balance and power in the Legends and Locos, learning these moves in the Bay chop and gusts would take many more seasons. Thank you Maui Sails! Brad Block

AUGUST….TIME TO Always plenty to do this time of year, with the PWA registration deadline moved to end of October we are full on into race sail development and so far it’s been a good month of progress. We had really good conditions here on Maui for the month of August so it gave us a chance to continue work on the race sails for 2012 and play around with some masts. I also had a chance to visit San Francisco and Im sure most of you have seen the exciting story I did about the Hydrotere catarman…. http://www.mauisails.com/news.php?id=333 We also had some visitors to Maui and we got to enjoy time with them, take them to some places they might have sailed on there own. It’s always great to see the regulars coming to Maui each year and especially the MauiSails customer and people who rent from Hi Tech. It’s always the small changes that make the best progression in performance when it comes to development. We already have some great ideas for the TR-9 and early testing shows we are on the right track to deliver another race winning performance. I personally used August as a bit of a re group, as in resting my body a bit, taking care of some niggling soreness that developed over the summer of racing hard, to also focus on my X training again, as I’m doing a marathon in September in the UK, mixed in with a business trip for MauiSails.

GREAT MONTH IN GORGE August was another great month here in the gorge, with warm temperatures and consistently strong winds from start to finish. Being one of the most reliable months of summer, August also meant an influx of friends and family visiting to take advantage of the amazing weather, making it by far my favorite month of summer. August kicked off with another round of solid westerlies with epic conditions in the corridor. I’ve been absolutely loving my 4.0 loco this year, it seems to always be my go-to sail no matter what. If it’s a lighter I’ve been having unreal freestyle sessions using a little less downhaul and my 90L freestyle board. The sail feels incredibly light, super stable, and has great power even in lighter conditions. On the windier days, just a little more downhaul and my 69L wave board and I’m set! It’s nice to have practically a one sail quiver! Using only my 4.0 has also allowed me to loan out my other sails a lot, and it’s been great to see all the smiles on sailors’ faces as they come off the water from trying the 3.5 Legend, 4.2 & 4.6 Mutant, and 4.5 Ghost. On the second week of the month my good friend and partner at EpicSesh, Jake Miller, came over from Maui to stay with me to sail and work for 3 weeks. Fresh from the airport we headed straight to the sandbar just downwind from the event site. Around this time of year the river gets to a certain level where small sandbars form and create some insane flat-water spots for freestyle. Tyson Poor, Bryan Metcalf-Perez, and I had some sick freestyle sessions there with Tyson and I taking advantage of the flat water, and Bryan using his custom slider board that he designed to hit the box rails and sliders in the water for the kiters. A few days later my parents rolled into town for their annual summer trip, and we immediately were able to get on the water at the hatchery. For me there is absolutely nothing more enjoyable than getting out on the water and sailing with my parents. It’s because of them I was fortunate to experience this wonderful sport and pursue a career around it, and it’s something I appreciate each and every day.

Maui Monthly

For the second half of the month we shifted gears (ok we still sailed a ton) over to event and work mode. The whole crew for EpicSesh rolled into town for a week of meetings and action packed product testing on the water, in the dirt, and even on the snow up on Mt. Hood! On the 17th I also helped out with the Postively Kai SUP Grom Races hosted by Kai Lenny. Back in May when Kai and I were together in Wisconsin for the Lake Michigan crossing, he expressed a desire to put on a grom race event here in Hood River prior to the Naish Columbia Gorge paddle challenge. I was stoked to get on board and help out, and the event turned out to be a greater success than any of us could have imagined. More than 200 groms from ages 5-16 came out to participate and had a blast racing and getting a chance to hang out with Kai and the Naish SUP crew. To end off the month with a bang, two of my friends from when I was at UC Davis that now live in San Francisco came up to visit. Their first day here was one of the windiest days at the wall yet this year, and they had an awesome time watching windsurfing in 3.5 conditions up close and personal for the first time. Windsurfing truly is a magnificent sport, and for me, there’s nothing I love more than sharing the stoke I get from it with others! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

AN EXCEPTIONAL AUGUST August is a fantastic month on Maui. It’s the month off for the pro sailors (sort of) and the time to tie together all the new sail designs for production. There’s been lots of discussion about sail colors, the simplicity (or not) in the graphic looks, and of course, the performance that counts. Art is honing in the choices we have based on testing out of the four or five protos in key sizes, and we are finding that changes made to material useage has made a big jump in the overall handling and range in TR as well as the Titan and Blaze. Shifting stable materials just slightly into the loaded areas is keeping the tension more evenly distributed and improving shape stability without stiffening rotation. It’s like a little booster. It was great to see Camille Juban get a taste of top finishes in Mexico and Peru. We can see him getting used to the radical possiblities when using the Mutant wave sails, and expect to have him finish the AWT tour with great results. And Holger Beer has won the German National Wave series, his first time for that. He’s a dedicated amateur and having some real fun testing himself against the top pros sometimes. Our congratulations to him.

We said we would get my Mom out on Cornelia for her 97th birthday, but missed that because that was a no wind day. So we had to pick up the slack in the month of August, and had a fantastic day out with Lena Kerr, and our old sailing buddy, Marina Beebe. Marina’s fine art always had a water theme as she was living and cruising on a 36’ sloop for many years with her husband and five kids. Later she sailed the boat with a friend all over the Pacific. She is in the picture, enjoying the day and Cornelia... both of them. The dodger is now also coming together and is framed and skinned with material to make a pattern for the real thing... maybe next month. Damn... summer’s almost over. Better do some sailing.
