LAST MINUTE JAPAN TRIP AND SWEET HOME Right before december quatro propose me to go to Japan for a promotional event in Omaezaki. I never been There so i was exited to go. After a fifty hour trip from guadeloupe I finally arrived to Japan. The quatro importer took good care of me, it was really cold, opposite weather from home, the conditions were tricky but the japaneese Community made me so Happy to come visit this beatiful country. I stay only one Week but I discover a new culture, food, people... That made one of the best different trip I had.
The rest of december i already worked on the 2013 video project and condition were greatfull with us. We had some amazing session on the caribean Sea. Happy new year everyone and All the best for 2013. Camille Juban

The month started off slow and light wind and little action as I was in Asia and traveling between Thailand and Vietnam for R&D and testing of the new formula, kode and flare freestytle boards. Had some amazing sailing days in the 2nd week of December with good wind in Vietnam for my Loco 4.8. still amazed how great these sails work in all conditions, got to love the loco’s meng :). With a litterly 2 day travel back to Bonaire from Thailand, it felt good to be back on Bonaire even though the wind was light I had to get on the windsurfing board. Soon I got back on Bonaire and needed that long sleep and spend sometime with my daughter I rigged my TR-8 10.0 sail and got on the 167 starboard formula and cruise around for awhile. My days windsurfing training on Bonaire after Thailand had been divided in formula slalom and freestyle/wave sailing on mostly my TR-8 10.0 & 6.6 and as far freestyle/wave I got the loco 5.2 out of the shelf rigged it and spend the last days using only the loco 5.2. My daughter love the sea, so when I get the chance and have time to be with her, I take her to the beach she jumps on the board and we cruise.she loves when we go fast, she always tells me "go faster, go faster" but as we are on a medium beginner board there’s no way we can go the speed she wants me to reach, hahahaha. she’s adorable. Last week of December had been great wind and spending most of my days freestyle sailing in the waves improve my jumping is a plus. Christmas and new years eve was a day just amazing sailing. Wish you all had a happy new year. Cheers to 2013. Best Taty Frans

HOLIDAYS WITH FAMILY December involved no windsurfing at all for me. Still in Hood River, I spent most of the month clocking in the hours at the physical therapy office. With the short days leading up to the winter solstice, and the wet and cold weather of Oregon, I was looking forward to some time off and a change in scenery. I flew in to Montreal and made the 6-hour trip North from the airport to reach my home town of Alma. The weather was prime; -10 to -15 deg celcius with daily snow fall, perfect for my favorite winter cross-training activity of skate skiing and for a white Christmas with family. I spent the best part of my trip at the log cabin to fully take advantage of what winter has to offer; snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and sledding with the nieces and nephews.Fun times. The one windsurfing highlight from my trip was getting a phone call from the local newspaper "the Lac-St-Jean" upon my arrival in Alma. They had heard of my 2nd AWT win and wanted an interview. The article came out pretty good, with this shot of me doing a toad on the front page of the sports section. The article is in French, of course, but here’s a link to the paper if you are ever so inclined to read it at www. lelacstjean.com Happy New Year! Ingrid Larouche CAN 66 Photos : Berthuot Visuals

QUIET AND MELLOW DECEMBER Usually I take the family to Utah to get some snow, cold and hopefully a white Christmas but this year we decided to stay home and enjoy the warm winter weather of Maui. The sailing was really good for the first part of the month, I had a good time getting back out on my new Mutants and new JP Single Thruster wave boards. After a long season of racing it is nice to get some water time in the surf.
vWe also had to finish off the new Tiatan GS sails so Phil and I did some freerace sailing with the new sails from Art. I even managed to get on all sizes from 6.0 to 11.0 thanks to some nice varying Maui winds. It is amazing how fast and easy to sail these sails are, they work very well on my new JP slalom boards but are light and easy enough to sail that I am sure they would be sweet on a freeride or freerace board as well. Once all the sizes were done and approved I had a nice early morning photo session with Barry on the Titan GS and the Blaze, these photos should be surfacing very soon with some nice touches from Bogo, cant wait to see the final product!!!

Nearer to Christmas time the wind decided to go on holiday as well so I pulled out the SUP gear and took advantage of the glassy water and nice surf that came along with it. My kids were also on holiday from school so we made some trips over to Laniaupoko and got them on their surf and SUP boards and they were finally really starting to get into it. Once Christmas day rolled around it was all about family time, having nice dinners together hanging out at home or the beach and then of course opening presents and then playing with all the new toys. It was a really nice Christmas and I think that everyone got what they wished for and maybe a bit more.

Finally it was the end of 2012 and time to start looking forward to 2013. With some lofty goals set for this season on my new TR9 and JP slalom IX it would soon be time to get back to some serious sailing and training. I hope that everyone out there had a great, successful, healthy and prosperous 2012!!!! And I wish you all lots of wind, health and prosperity for 2013!!!! Aloha Micah Buzianis

DEC.BAJA IN LA VENTANA AND LOS BARRILES This December I spent the month in southern Baja in La Ventana and Los Barriles. Both spots offer consistent 4.5-7.5 winds, perfect for slalom, bump & jump, and freestyle, from early November through the end of February. I haven’t spent a long period of time down in the area for a few years now, and it’s been awesome being back. We’ve still had a good amount of solid days on the water, despite what most locals are calling a slow start to the season. My first day in La Ventana was packed with slalom racing on my TR-8 6.3 and 7.0. In my first race I was able to get out in front of friend and Tyson after the 2nd mark and keep him behind

me to start off with a 1st place finish! Tyson, needless to say unhappy, made me pay, and I wound up finishing 2nd on the day, but it was a great way to start the trip! Tyson and I have had some great days training slalom, typically on 7.0 or 7.6. Phil was awesome enough to lend me a TR-9 8.4 prototype, and I had a blast on a couple light days hauling ass in barely any wind head to head with Tyson on his 8.6. On a 460, the 8.4 just feels so light and smooth! We’ve also been having some epic freestyle days. I mainly use my 4.8 Loco down here, and find that it has enough range to work when guys are out on anywhere from 4.25.8! Leaving La Ventana and heading over to Los Barriles and we had a few great days there. With the deeper water just off the beach, Los Barriles can have some pretty big swells breaking right on shore, making a fun dynamic for freestyle. Towards the end of the month I headed home to LA for my birthday the holidays. I always enjoy heading home for the holidays and seeing my family and friends from growing up. This year I was extra special because on the day after Christmas, a storm passed through LA and I was able to sail C. St, an amazing side-shore wavesailing spot, in Ventura! With all my gear still in Baja, I had to grab an old wetsuit from high-school (which was a little tight), but luckily my parents already had their 2013 sails and I snuck out on a 4.7 Legend. The 4.7 Legend was the first MauiSails I ever had, and 7 years later it still rocks! If you’re thinking of a new winter spot to escape from the cold, be sure to check out Ventana Windsports, who offer a full line of MauiSails rigs for rentals, or Pro Windsurf La Ventana, for an amazing winter getaway vacation! This month was a strange one, we had a little wind in the beginning and a little at the end, I spent most of the month surfing. The few days I got to sail though were sick. Maxed out on my 3.3 legend and planing out of loops, I love the stability of the legend. I got lowers on a big and light day, I snagged my dads 5.0 ghost, it was epic. I was one of the only people out, catching wave after wave until I took off on a set that was about mast high, hit the lip launched a huge aerial and landed nicely in the flats. Or so I thought, the next thing I knew I was getting pounded still holding onto my sail.

I hit the sail with my body a few times, and when I came up I was expecting the worst for the sail, but to my surprise I had only broken a batten, I thought for sure that I had torn the window or at least put a hole in it from my bar. Not only is the ghost super light but it is extremely durable. After that session the wind died for a while and I surfed a bunch. I got one last sesh before the end of the year, on my 3.8 mutant at Ho’okipa, logo high waves and just enough wind to plane, my favorite. I had some fun rides and a few aerials and near the end I hit a taka in the foam! After that I went far upwind

and went super fast off the wind to do a huge forward, I over rotated, let go with my back hand and when I hit the water my ribs hit the boom, luckily it was only a small hairline fracture and I’m still able to sail without pain. Can’t wait for next months epic conditions! Aloha Casey Rehrer

DECEMBER IS THE QU No world ending cataclysms, no death dealing asteroids, no giant earthquakes. What a relief. Now we can relax and get back to thinking and working on the things we were thinking about and working on all during December. The time for getting the new material ideas into a form we can evaluate (from the idea to 100 yards of the real thing), and then making it into something much better
and more durable is upon us. Waves and wind have been quite good but a large part of this month saw Art and his family shussing on the snow and trying to keep warm, while Phil and his daughter, Maddie, did a visit to family in Oz. We will just have to use the January waves and wind to finish the testing I guess.

UIET MONTH We did manage to get Cornelia sailing a couple times this month, especially the 22nd of December, just to celebrate the non-event being over. And we had a fine time with visitors from Munich, the Stadlers. Robert was finding out about winter waves as opposed to those easy going summer ones.
And above all else, I think all of us here at MauiSails, wish you all the best for the coming new year and al the success it will bring to everyone. May there be plenty of sailing in the future ... and beyond. Aloha Barry Spanier

DECEMBER MOSTLY IN AUSTRALIA
Our Experience, Your Reward
Had a trip downunder early December, tackling another half Ironman Triathlon in Canberra, as well as catching up with fellow windsurfers, friends and family. I had a very good race in Canberra scoring another Personal record in 5 hours and 7 minutes. Our flagship product in the TR9 is now well on the way to importers, in fact I had the pleasure to spend a day in Sydney with some of the local racers including our importer Remi going over the tuning of some of the sizes and getting on the water with the boys.

It was a great with a light breeze coming up and everyone enjoying an afternoon on the water. All thumbs up for the TR9……..Art has done a fabulous job on the designs, it’s safe to say all the sizes have improved and we have done our very best again to product a race winning design. See you all in 2013 and we look forward good winds, good product and good health. Aloha, Phil McGain

ANOTHER BUSY YEAR HAS COME TO AN END Looking back it has been a good season of progress and innovation in our sail designs. Starting with the release of the breakthrough Mutant sail range at the beginning of the year, a lot of interest and excitement was generated as word spread about the awesome combination of maneuverability and power. We developed our new, light weight gradient laminate material and incorporated it through out much of our sail range. Race sail development progressed at full steam and the resulting TR-9 has been very well received as our ultimate fine tuned race weapon. Trickle down from the intense race sail development has led to an all new 2013 Titan-GS which with it’s lower aspect ratio and revised shaping, gives top performance in the freerace category. The Holidays arrived and it was great to have some family time. We were ready to get to the snow for some skiing and boarding and flying to Seattle has been the best (most affordable) way to pull it off lately. We had perfect luck with the weather, arriving at the tail end of one storm and right before a second, bigger one. Our daughter was a trooper, hanging in there, despite little sleep, as we rallied straight into the Cascade mountains for a full day of fresh pow at Stevens Pass. With an ambitious schedule, we left in the late afternoon, determined to make it to Whistler for what promised to be solid conditions the next morning. On the way we made a quick stop in Vancouver to pick up my parents and get 2 hours of sleep and we were off again. The effort proved worthwhile as once we got to Whistler, the snow didn’t stop falling, with something like 6 feet in 4 days. My ripping wifey and I got to share some sick, untracked lines from the peak, making for good times. It was great to see our daughter progressing too and we were happy to see her charging for 6 days in a row, skiing in the wind and snow. Not bad for a “born and raised” Maui girl. It was a great trip and nice to meet up with the family and some old friends. The good thing about going for vacation from Maui is that you get to come back to Maui. The wind and waves were still around when we returned. Aloha, Artur Szpunar
