JULY JULY JULYYYY!
FUERTE EVENT AND BARCELONE AIRPORT NIGHTMARE What a long month, I’ve been sailing so much that I only missed 7 days of wndsurfing due to traveling. If it wasn’t for that I would have sailed the whole month of July. This month was kinda hard to really forcus on one discipline as Fuerteventura was closing in and I kinda had to spend my training on both freestyle and slalom. As my time on Bonaire was just two and half weeks before my travel to Fuerte, I spent most time on the freestyle gears and had not much training on the slalom. But as I was having so much fun freestyling and forgot to get my slalom gears tuned up before.
As we all arrived 5 days before the event it was kinda crazy 50 knots of wind for the the whole 5 days, crazy wind and trying to do freestyle was just so scary for everyone, just one hour of freestyle session was enough for that day.
As for my Freestyle gears I took: 2x 91 wood carbon Flare 1x 4.0 loco 1x 4.4 loco 1x 4.8 loco
As far as slalom, training felt good for the first runs until my foot got out of the straps and I got crashed head first into the sail. This happened just 2 days before the slalom competition:(. I had a sore back and stiff neck, the whole week. They say bad & good luck doesn’t exsist but to me it couldn’t figure out what was happening. Seems like Fuerteventura sure didn’t like me this year. If I put everything that happen to me before and during the slalom competition it’s like not normal; 1. bad crash got my neck stiff 2. first heat as I was approaching the 3rd mark the mast just snapped 3. Chris Presller and I missed our heat due to a snap of a finger heat change. 4. getting 50 meters to the finish line I wanted to put my feet into the strap to get more secure, the board went side ways and crashed.
As far traveling I was together with my brother Choko, Bjorn and Maxime van Gent. Arriving in Fuertevetura felt like yesterday, no wind at the aiport side but got windier and windier as we got closer to the event site, something that you will expect from Fuerteventura.
After 3 bad races and no more races done as the wind got too light and this was my 2nd 33 places finish this year in an event. At the moment I am overall 24th place in slalom. We still have 3 more events to go, let’s see what happens next in Turkey.
My slalom gear for fuerteventura was as follow : TR-8: 5.5 5.9 6.6 Board: Isonic 80 & 96 Fins: 32 34 36 Booms; 2x wide tail slalom boom 170 and 1x wave tail 170.

As far for freestyling I guess with all those bad things going on in slalom I couldn’t figure what to do in freestyle, seems like I was more busy trying to figure out what was going on instead of putting my mind on the freestyle. With a 7th place finish and at the moment laying in 4th overall, the next freestyle will be in Sylt and I’m looking forward to those cold conditions. Other than that, I am so happy that I was the first one to do a double loop and airchacho. I WILL DO BETTER RESULTS IN MY NEXT FREESTYLE EVENT THAT IS FOR SURE. Traveling home to Bonaire was a nightmare. Arriving in Barcelona we had to again check our boardbags. We waited for like 4 hours, then we were among the first 10 people to be at the check-in counters. When it got our time to check in it was 4 pm, the lady at the check-in in told us we have to wait because "we cannot check you in due to the fact that we have 8 board bags and the airline didn’t except these. I said to the lady, "We have already paid for these bags in Bonaire before we even flew to Fuerteventura and we did have an okay from KLM that the airline will take the bags. Then she said, "I am sorry but you have to wait." There we are waiting for two hours, and our flight was boarding at 6:30. With all the discussion throughout the 2 hours waiting and talking, and all tha bla bla, finally she said, "Okay... 2 of you can go with 4 bags but then 2 of you guys have to stay with the other 5 bags and take another flight which will be either tonight at 8pm or tomorow morning." Wow what an option. And... you guys have to pay 200euro for excess baggage."

I said that we already did pay for the excess baggage. She said, "Either you pay this or you all are staying here." I paid the 200euro so my brother and Maxime van Gent got their flight from BarCeloNaAMS - then back to Bonaire. So Bjorn and I were still stuck in BCN trying to get another flight so that we can get back to Bonaire. It took us from 5:30 untill 11:00 to just book and get another flight to AMS then to Bonaire, yet we had another trouble as we are standing at the ticker sales office. The lady there told us that she cannot get confirmation from KLM to take our boardbags and that we need to get in contact with KLM cargo to take the boardbags. So Bjorn and I had 8 hours to arrange KLM cargo so that our boardbags can get to Bonaire someday somehow. We got our new ticket and I asked the lady at the sales office, "Can I go now and check in the luggages and then I can go and arrange cargo?" She said "Yes go and do that". As a member of KLM Flying blue "gold elite" I have priority check-in. I went to the same lady and I said, "Can I check in now?" She said, "You may have to wait," and took someone else who was behind me. I got really mad but at the same time I stayed calm. I went to her again I said, "You need to treat me with more respect. Is it just because I have these boardbags? Is the reason you are making such a big issue.?" She said, "You may have to wait. I said, Please explain to me why I can’t check in." She had no answer. So I just waited until one of her mates called me and said we may check in after 3 hours of waiting. Then he said, "How many bags do you have?"

I said I had 2 luggage and 4 windsurfing equipment bags. He said okay, here are your boarding passes and he then labeled all the boardbags and luggage straight to Bonaire. Due to me having that sky blue gold elite card, they upgraded Bjorn and I to business class. That was a relief and what a good seat to fly back home:). Catch you all on the next one because now I’m back on two and half weeks of slalom before Turkey. Taty Frans NB-9

JULY FOR MICAH July started out a bit rough for me, as I planned a nice day hiking/hunting on July 1st up in Poli Poli Park in Maui with my two kids Lance and K.C. and it turned out to be an annoying run in with a DLNR officer. My kids really wanted to go hunting with me and since there is a large Archery only area up in Poli Poli I figured what a great place to go with them for a nice hike and I could carry my bow with me to show them we were hunting. To make a long story short I left with three citations from the officer and it ruined our hunt/hike, not the best start to a long month. This bad start didn’t last long though as it was soon one of my favorite holidays July 4th and we had a great celebration at my place with friends and family. We barbecued some really good burgers and hot dogs on kiawe wood to give them some extra good flavor. We followed this up with a big fireworkds display in the front yard, it was great weather and a great day. Tied in with all this fun and adventure was plenty of training and testing on and off the water in preparation for this months big goal the PWA event in Fuerteventura. It was a very windy month of July in Maui and I had quite a few good days testing and running buoys and starts with Phil. Pretty much every day was spent on either 6.3, 6.6 or 7.0 which would surely be the key sizes for Fuerte. For extra good prep we had another Maui Slalom series and had really good winds racing on 6.6 and 7.0 and my 59 board all day. Phil was on fire and won the open division in the morning, with dead solid starts he was untouchable. I did get my revenge in the afternoon though and won our age division battle, so it was 1, 2 in the morning and again we went 1,2 for team MauiSails in the afternoon.

After the Maui race on the 14th of July it was time to pack the bags and head to Fuerte. I had been checking on the conditions there before I went and it was blowing over 35knots everyday there for the last month so it was sure to be a good event with lots of racing. Travel over went well and I made it feeling very fresh and ready to go. I had one day to do a little testing and get rigged and ready, I sailed on my 6.6 fully wound and out of control but feeling very ready to race. Day one looked like it was going to be a windy start to the event and after a warm up on 6.6 the 11am start time came and the wind went and we sat around the rest of the day waiting. Over the next four days in Fuerte we spent most of the time sitting around in sweltering heat as the wind oscillated in and out. On the second day we managed to finish one round but it took all day, I made it to the final and after a good start I had my chance to come out of the first mark in the lead but I fluffed my gybe and had to settle for fourth. That was a long day to get one round of racing in. The next day the wind looked like it was back and we were straight into the second round. In the second round the wind was up and down but held to finish the round with out any delays. I was in a good position at the first mark in my semi’s but then I was taken out hard and finished last in my semi. I did have some redemption in the losers final with a good start I rounded mark one in second and by mark two after a tight gybe I was in the lead to the end. With no rest we went straight into the second round of the day and for me it went much the same as the previous although I didn’t get fully taken out in my semi I did get pushed so wide that

no.87. July ’12
I had no chance to come back. And in the losers final I nailed my start and lead from start to finish. And again after a very short break it was straight into the third round of the day, this round however didn’t no go so well for me. After a very poor start in my quarters heat I fell at the first mark and while I almost managed to come back to fourth I got fifth by about a quarter of a board length ending my day. Little did I know that would be the end of the event. The last two days in Fuerte we did get a little bit of sailing in and even finished a few heats but never came close to finishing another full round. So even though I felt good and seemed to have good speed I could only manage a seventh place finish to show for it. So after a long week of waiting around and not much sailing it was back on the plane to Maui. I had a long trip back to Maui, with an overnight in London and a tight connection in LA if all went smooth I would make it back to Maui the night before the State Championships. Travel did go smooth and as planed and I did make it home in time and was able to do a full day of racing in medium winds at Kanaha. I was feeling a bit out of it for the races but had a great day battling Phil who also was a bit jet lagged after just getting back to Maui from the gorge as the US National Slalom and Formula champ. I did get the better of him and the rest of the fleet this day, taking the morning age division and again in the afternoon in the open. Phil did sail very solid though and had two bullets and finished second in both divisions. I even managed enough days in Maui this summer to take the Maui County Champion title as well, so a few nice local titles to add to the resume.

GORGE SUMMER IS HERE! Finally, finally, finally! July delivered in the Gorge, with what seemed like nonstop wind from the beginning to the end of the month! After a long stretch of June gloom we had great days from the Hatch to Arlington, packed with racing, freestyle, and epic high wind jumping days! We had some amazing days at the Hatch, with steady strong winds and what were probably the biggest swells I’ve ever seen on the river. Logo high, 200ft long, butter smooth, and sections 50ft long that would peel over like an actual wave, you have to see it to believe it! The 4.0 Loco just might be one of my favorite sails of all time! From lighter conditions on my 90L freestyle board to maxed out on my 69L wave board, the 4.0 loco can handle any conditions you can throw at it here in the river. On the big days I moved down to the 3.7 and 3.5 legends. The 3.7 as always is a dream, incredible range with a soft feel makes the harshest of conditions quite enjoyable. And on the big, big, big days, the 3.5 keeps the top end manageable while still having enough gut to get through the death lulls that always seem to come with strong winds. Halfway through the month I switched gears up and headed down to the Event Site for the 2012 US Nationals. Phil came in to town along with a crew of MauiSails riders, and it was great to see such a large presence of MauiSails in both Slalom and Formula. The week started out with the US Freestyle Championships. We had great conditions for the Event Site, and I was able to use the 4.8 Loco all day, and with a couple double flakas and funnels, secure 4th place overall for freestyle. After that, the rest of the week was devoted to racing. Starting out with formula and moving to slalom each day, the gorge delivered yet again and we had 3 days of non-stop, high-action racing! Phil dominated the formula, leading the pack from start to finish each and every race. For Slalom, Phil again proved himself as the one to beat, and though he and Tyson Poor finished in a dead tie in 1st place, Phil’s two 2nd place throw outs vs. Tyson’s two 4th place throw outs broke the tie for Phil to take 1st place in Slalom as well, finishing up as 2012 Overall US National Champion! I had more fun racing during the Nationals then I’ve ever had in my life. The TR-8s were working great, the 7.0 and 7.6 were my weapons of choice for the entire week. After a couple terrible jibes in the first day where I got stuck in the foot straps (don’t want to TALK about it), I was able to fight my way back and finish in 2nd or 1st in each of my heats for the next 9 races during the final 2 days, finishing in 2nd for the North American Production Championships and 2nd in Men’s Slalom, stoked!!!!! After nationals, it was right back to the hatch for more big days on the water. For 3 days in a row all I needed in the van was my 3.7 and 69L wave board, and I wasn’t complaining one bit. Looks like more is on tap for August, so stay tuned to the website for more updates from here in the Gorge! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser

JULY ON THE RACE COURSE A busy month for me, but a very successful one. We had a few Maui Race Series events which proved very good for MauiSails. I was exchanging places with Micah and when he wasn’t here I was able to win both my age group and Pro divisions. In the end I placed second to Micah at the State Championships, so it was good to have the top 2 places on MauiSails. I was also back at the US Nationals but in Hoodriver, Oregon this time. We had a great event, sailing everyday and meeting lots of enthusiastic windsurfers. I managed to get first place overall, winning the Formula by a country mile, and having a close battle in the Slalom, but finally coming out on top. We have started working on the TR9 already, although the tr8 is a very good design we are confident we can continue to make small improvements deliver to the market another knockout race sail. FROM
FRANCE TO MEXICO
In the begening of July I was still in France doing jui jitsu and streching as a training, I also was surfing a lot and I sail coupls of times to try the ghost xt and get use to the muttant wich I like better and better. I had a good time in south ouest of France but I was missing the sailing so much... Luckily I had this trip plan with the quatro team. I left on the 20th from France to go to Abreojos wich is around 900 km from Los Angeles so we hade to drive down. I lend in LA on the 20th at night but arrived in Abreojos only on the 24th because my board bags arrived 2 days after and the car broke on the way down... a good trip never goes perfectly. All the other guy’s were allready there : Levi, Brawzinho, Bernd, Alex and had a pretty good swell. Keith and a friend of him where waiting for my bags too so we could do the road together. Once we fixed all those probleme we finaly arrived in Abreojos to meet all the guys. Abreojos is the kind of little fisherman town in the middle of no where in Mexico and it it wasreally was reallycool cooltotobebethere therewith withthe theQuatro Quatroboys boysbecause becauseit was it wasa areally reallygood goodcrew. crew.

We didn’t get an epic swell but at least we sailed everyday on head high condition and every one was ripping. I just enjoyed so much sailing in good condition after spending lot of time in France and sailed couple times on kind of onshore condition. We all had great footage and picturs and looks like Windsport and other magazines are gonna publish them so you will probably see it in the mag’s soon. And quatro are gonna do a little webisode with the footage we have got. I used the 4.2 muttant pretty much every day and I this is gonna be my favorite sails, I like it a lot. We stay there for one week because we hade to go to San Carlos 3th event of the AWT tour which was starting on the 29th of july. I’m actualy in San Carlos but there is no condition yet so you gonna know more about my result on the next maui monthly. Camille Juban

SUMMER AND TR-9 DEVELOPMENT
no.87. July ’12
For the kids, summer is almost over. Our daughter is back in school, excited to be starting 2nd grade. Time is certainly moving quickly as it seems so recently that we were taking her to her first day of kindergarten. We’ve had a busy summer, with some good family surf sessions, some camping and even a little travel. The wind certainly hasn’t let us down this summer and the location of the high this year seems to have provided the north shore with above average wind swell, keeping things interesting. I’ve mostly been sailing on the new Mutants this summer, taking advantage of the strong wind to even get the smaller 4.2 and 3.8 sizes some solid water time. Especially when rigged on the new 340, those sails offer some ridiculously light handling and have been giving me some renewed jumping and spinning energy, almost like a time warp to younger days. On the development front, we are full steam ahead with the TR-9, and have been getting good results with the shaping and material adjustments performed thus far. Our main goals have been to further increase overall speed and wind range. Part of our development has involved revaluating the location and stretch characteristics of the various materials used in the sleeve and sail body in order to produce a lighter, yet crisper and more stable feeling sail. The material adjustments are allowing us to evolve the shaping in order to create more stable profiles, but with even cleaner release and improved efficiency. It’s great having Micah fully involved in the testing and development together with Phil and with all of us based together on Maui we are able to tune and test the sails year round.

BIRTHDAY MONTHS ARE FUN We’re having a race sail birthday of sorts, getting well into that variety while the competition is hot and the focus is not distracted. There were two Maui Race Series events and loads of other great evaluation opportunities with all levels of racers giving us feedback. And I’m happy to say it has all been good. Phil and Micah played off each other in the local racing and in the other fleets we saw Tamara Bockius, Mike Yasak, and a few new names hold top placings in high energy racing. And the conditions didn’t get much different day to day so the testing has been epic. The weather pattern seems to have shifted into a different regime these last months, with the trades hold more north than the last decade or so. In fact, it was much more like how we found it to be in the 1980’s... a bit more onshore and windy to the beach. Fantasticly perfect for slalom. The U.S. Nationals also showed us to be strong and also saw some new names, like Jack and Charlie Lundquist getting trophies. There were lots of heats and rounds and I can’t see how it could have been anything but fun. The Gorge came through and put on a great event with thanks to Sam Bittner for taking on the task at the last minute. Art and I have been going round and round about colors and design. Personally I’m completely off with the Mindless Decoration trend. And I know Art doesn’t have that focus either. So we talk about which colors can be the most important and how to make the most from the least carving and piecing. Simplicity in design is good for many reasons (adds durability, less seam weight, simplifies repairs, ages well), and it is the most difficult to do with market ’requirements’ driving product. To paraphrase a great songwriter/poet... to live outside the trend you must be honest... :) Meanwhile on the technical side, we’ve been building some experiments for a lower aspect TitanGS along with variations in the TR range. As usual, we are looking to make the sails lighter without giving up anything, and to build the simplest graphic look into something bold and recognizeable as ’ours’. With race sails and race types the search is always on to balance the fullness with the tension (least wrinkles) and to create twist without looseness, maintaining leech tension and still staying soft and easy in the hands. Taking care of Mom is more interesting by the day and often demands attention unplanned. July was her birth month, sharing the day with the likes of Mick Jagger, and due to a number of factors we were unable to sail on her birthday. She is ready to go, so maybe next month there will be a little bit about Cornelia on the CORNELIA to celebrate 97 years (and 66 for me). We should all be so lucky. Aloha Barry Spanier

TO THE RACE AND FREE-RACE SA ILS With the 2013 wave and freestyle sail lines completed, Our attention has now turned to the race and free-race sails. This year we have a great starting point with the current TR-8 race sails proving themselves as winners on the race course. In a way, this presents its own challenge as we are looking to improve something that is already working very well. This has never slowed us down before so we have been busy working through a variety of prototypes ranging from moderate refinements and material/ construction modifications all the way to experimenting with significant geometry changes. Summer on Maui is a perfect time for race sail development as the waves subside and the trades are super consistent. The Local Maui race series also provides an excellent testing ground with an ever competitive fleet of local and international racers. We are also devoting attention to the evolution of the Titan GS free-race sail line. Its development will somewhat parallel that of the race sails with the goal of improving range, speed and power. Stay tuned for updates as more testing determines the evolutionary direction of our next batch of speed machines. Aloha, Artur Szpunar
