MAUISAILS TEAM DOMINATED AWT PISTOL RIVER WAVE BASH The forecast delivered for day four at the 2013 AWT Pistol River Wave Bash presented by Starboard with 20-25 knot wind. The waves were small but there was enough to get through a full single elimination bracket for all the divisions. It was a long day at the beach but it was exciting to see what the riders could deliver in such challenging conditions.

MEN’S PRO

The first round of pro heats was tough with no jumps counting and really the best waves breaking practically on the beach. Riders picking the best waves would get one or two hits before finishing with a slash or two right up onto the sand. Gorge area riders Sean Aiken, Nathan Mershon and Casey Hauser (finished 5th) took advantage of their Oregon coast knowledge to advance to the semi finals along with Camille Juban, Kevin Pritchard, Levi Siver, Morgan Noireaux and Bernd Roediger. The final was extended to 20-minutes with each rider’s best two wave rides and one jump counting for their score. Kevin Pritchard was on fire making it insanely tough on the judges as he was scoring in every way possible. But in the end his scores were not enough to take down Juban, whose first jump was a nicely tweaked Push Loop. Then minutes later Juban threw down an even bigger and more tweaked Push Loop that may have been the highest scoring jump of the event. Juban was masterful at picking off the best waves of the heat, constantly getting several hits off the outer sandbar and then following the wave in for more critical hits on the beach break. Congratulations to Juban for sailing an amazing heat!

WOMEN’S DIVISION

The 20-minute super final featured last years champion Ingrid Larouche against Fiona Wylde, Katie McAnena and Miho Tanaka. For the past few event the battle between Larouche and Wylde for the top spot on the AWT Women’s podium has been fairly one sided with Larouche winning easily...but it looks like things have now changed. Larouche is sailing better than ever with an aggressive style and big Forward Loops that really impress the judges, but now Wylde has stepped up her game in a huge way with impressive wave hits and a smooth style. Wylde scored the biggest wave of the heat and ripped it apart but it wasn’t quite enough to take down Larouche who defended her title. Congrats to both for putting on an impressive 20-minute show for the crowd. Comment from Ingrid Larouche : Fun event, as usual. Conditions were for sure not what you would normally expect from Pistol river with lighter Wind and smaller waves. But also not as cold!! Great and close competition on the women side! Lots of ripping ladies!!

THE AMATEUR

With 27 riders the Amateur fleet was the biggest in the competition. It was 20-minute final featuring Fiona Wylde, Casey Rehrer, Marc Bitoun and Jeff Albright. Both Rehrer and Bitoun were on fire in the final. Both caught plenty of set waves and cut them apart with super critical hits. The heat was very close and may have come down to the jumping with Bitoun’s Back Loop giving him the title over Rehrer’s Forward.

MASTERS

The Masters and Grand Masters fleet was mixed together giving everyone the ultimate competition experience. The 20-minute final came down to a battle between Dana Miller, Sean Aiken, Ferdinando Loffreda and Brian Caserio. Aiken sailed well for 2nd place but it wasn’t enough to take down Loffreda who was super impressive in the final. Loffreda is definitely in the drivers seat for the overall Master’s title winning both of the AWT’s first two events.

YOUTH

The youth final came down to a match up between Maui’s Casey Rehrer and Fiona Wylde from the Gorge. The wave riding skill of both has improved immensely since they joined the tour just a few years ago. Rehrer took the title sailing a strong heat landing a massive Forward Loop and some slashy wave rides.

MAUI SAILS LOOKING A BIT RETRO?

Guys at Boardseekermag.com did a preview of 2014 gear that included MauiSails wave range. It’s interesting how other see MauiSails products. Here is a quotation about our brand. "Another brand that has not spent so much time on their colours and designs but more on the actual sail is Maui Sails. With Taty Frans being one of the main driving forces behind the brand there is no doubt that the sails will work well but should they focus a little more on the look or is it right to remain with their style that they are known for?" http://www.boardseekermag.com/features/sneak-peak/

After sending MauiSails weekly recap newsletter including BS coment about MauiSails design we recieved e-mail back which you can read below. "As a graphic designer, I totally disagree with the assessment. MauiSails’s graphics look AWESOME! They have always led the pack in graphic design as well as function, and have evolved nicely while staying true to their initial design. Send this guy the original article with the creature sketches of the Mutant as an example.y favorite colors for this year are the blue/green/white and the red/yellow/white. They are very visible on the water, distinctive and unique in design, and embrace the combination of beauty and function in the sport that is the very definition of "art." - Cliff Hauser

A MONTH IN CALIFORNIA In the double elimination at Santa Cruz I did a pretty good come back and missed the podium... very close. I was pretty disappointed about that because I knew I could be on the podium. Anyway... after that I took couple days off and visited Carmel and Monterey with my girlfriend to make the pressure come down. My plan was to visit San Francisco too betwen those two contests. Phil and Casey had this clinic on the weekend at Berkley and Crissy Field so I told them that I would be around at this time and it would be a pleasure to join. On Saturday (first day of the clinic) at Berkley, it was windy like they never saw before, and that brought a lot of people which was really fun. Second day at Crissy we got a bit unlucky, the wind was not as strong and it was a little cloudy but the slalom gear could be tested. I’m not a slalom guy yet but the TR-9 is sooo good that I will probably start doing slalom contest with this weapon at home this winter.

We still had some more time before Pistol River so I decided to go up to Hood River in the Gorge for couple days. The wind was not there so as I never ever snowboarded or was skiing in my life we went to Mount Hood with my girlfriend to try this new feeling... OMG it was really really fun! First run I was falling all the time, second run I was going faster then my girl (not beginner). Third run I got too confident and tried jumping but I ended up getting my board in the face so I stop and say, I will go this winter in France just to do snowboarding hihi. It was a really cool experience.

After that I was like, ok now, stop doing this stuff and start focusing on the contest. A couple days after we went down to Pistol and I was really focused. Forecast was looking really bad and we didn’t know if we were even gonna run the contest. I wanted really bad, I just wanted to fight and try to do better than Santa Cruz. So the first day they did this SUP contest cause the wind was not there yet. Second day the waves were small but still there, the wind really light and they could do the first round of all the division except the Pro’s cause we got released by mid day. The third day the wind was better but the waves got even smaller which means it was pretty much ankle high but we all agreed to try insted of staying and sit all day.

Photos by Si Crowther and AmericanWindsurfingTour.com

It was my first time ever in this spot so I went out and took couple waves before my heat so passed my first heat with out difficulty, but the second heat I was against Levi and Bernd so I new that I had to sail almost to my best to pass this heat. When I got off the water of this heat I thought I was not gonna pass because I didn’t sail the way I wanted. It was really close with Bernd but I made it. In contests sometime it’s in your favor, sometime not, and this time it was my turn. As I was not happy on my sailing on the semi I thought to myself that needed to my best now, even if the condition was shitty and it worked... I’m really happy to see that I could be on top of the podium even if it’s not the condition that I like and it gets me more confident as I’m at the second place at the ranking now. Camille Juban

JUNE…!! SO MUCH WINDSURFING!! June was just unbelievable for me this year. Started off by driving back to Hood River after the AWT Santa Cruz event, which I won again, for a third year in a row! Participating in the AWT has been tons of fun! I have met so many cool people and made great friends and I want to say a huge thanks to Sam Bittner who is working really hard in putting these competitions together! The Gorge really delivered this month!! And due to my new resolution of “working less” this summer, I scored a lot of amazing days at the hatchery, and out east at “the Wall”, lit up on my 2.9!! On really windy days, “the wall” offers great port ramps, forcing me to work on my port jumping. I am really excited to be making so much progress on my bad jumping side, and be nearly landing backloops! I also sailed a few days on the 3.5 legend, and a handful of lighter, more “freestyly” days on the 4.4 loco. I am absolutely amazed of the range of the 4.4 loco; allowing me to enjoy the very light wind days, but yet, has such good top end, that I can still be comfortable on that sail when the guys are on 4.2!!!

It’s been pretty quiet windsurfing-wise back in the Gorge since the event. Partly due to the heat wave we have right now, and a bad mountain bike crash that led me to the ER. Stitches to my hand will be keeping me out of the water for a few days :( oh well! Ingrid Larouche

Then, I was off to the 2nd stop of the AWT; the Pistol Wave Bash. Usually, when I head down to Pistol, I bring the smallest gear I own, and the warmest clothes I got. But this year, Pistol turned out to be relatively warm and light, with wind for only 2 out of the 7 day-window of the competition, just enough to complete a single elimination. I sailed the 4.7 legend, and the absolutely awesome new 4.2 mutant during my heats. 7 ladies competed; but what was low in numbers, wasn’t in skills!! The girls are really stepping it up! And it’s so nice to have international ladies showing up to these events. This time around, Katie McAnena came from Ireland, Kate Barker from Australia, and once again, Miho Tanaka from Japan. The waves were really small and hard to find, and the competition was very close. During the final, Fiona Wylde seemed to catch the best waves there were out there. I believe she out-scored me on waveriding and my loops are really what helped me defend my title! This is the 4th win for me at the Pistol wave bash and I can see how holding on to the title will be even harder next year!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN FOR JUNE! The summer season kicked off with a bang on the west coast, and we scored insane conditions in San Francisco, the Delta, Hood River, and Pistol River! After the AWT Santa Cruz event I headed out to Rio Vista to spend a few days windsurfing with my parents before our upcoming MauiSails demos in the bay area the following weekend. My dream and eventual choice to pursue a lifestyle around windsurfing came from summer camping trips up to Rio Vista with my parents. It has been 10 years since our first trip up to Rio, so for me it was incredibly special to come back and spend those few days just with my folks. And the wind delivered! We had epic conditions, with Mom and I out on the Legend 2.9 and 3.3 for two back to back sessions! The small Legends this year are incredible, extremely well balanced, providing extra comfort and confidence when mother nature steps it up a notch. My mom tried the 340 mast in the 2.9 and immediately noticed how smooth and light the sail felt in her hands, even when it was gusting over 40mph!

After a great weekend of demos in the bay with Sunset Sailboard’s Kevin Kan at the Cal Saling Club in Berkeley and Crissy Field, it was finally time for me to head ’home’ to Hood River. On the first day back we headed straight out to the wall for an epic 3.7 day. Driving along the dirt road out to the launch, I noticed a few new quivers of Legends out on the water, and was stoked to hear great feedback from everyone on how the sails are performing for them. The wind tapered off a bit, and we had a few ’junuary’ days, but in between there was enough to get out at the hatch for some freestyle sessions before heading down to Pistol River for the 2nd stop of the AWT series. I was able to get the 4.0 and 4.4 Loco’s on the water and was really blown away with the range and stability this year on both sizes!

Camille Juban decided to come check out Hood River before the AWT Pistol comp, and though we didn’t get great wind, after a day up on Mt. Hood snowboarding, it was time get back in the car and head 7 hours south to Pistol River! Even with the extended time period for the comp, we were unlucky with the conditions, but managed to get two days of good wind and enough waves to run a full single elimination for all divisions. Art and Phil had sent us over a 2014 Mutant 4.2 to try, and armed with that I was able to advance from my first heat with Levi Siver into the second round. In my 2nd heat the wind backed off a bit so I opted for the 4.6 and headed out against Nathan Mershon, Kevin Prithard, and Morgan Noireaux. A ridiculously stacked heat, I just tried to keep having fun, find what waves I could, and one good ramp. In the last minute I was able to find a good back loop ramp on the outside, and connect one last wave-ride in that put me in 3rd for the heat, resulting in 5th place overall. Camille was on fire, tearing apart the small waves that would roll through, linking down the line turns to tweaked aerials that had everyone wondering ’how is he even doing that?!?!’ I was his caddy for the final, and standing by the waters edge, I knew when he stuck a massive tweaked pushy that he took the comp! On the women’s side, Ingrid had a tough battle this year as all the girls have really stepped it up. In the final, it was close between Ingrid and Fiona in waves, and with Ingrid’s perfected forwards she was able to add another victory to her belt. Congrats to Camille, Ingrid, Casey R, and Ferdinando for taking the title in their divisions! July is ramping up to be another jam packed month, with Gorge Cup, Freestyle Frenzy, and AWT San Carlos on tap! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

IT’S BEEN AN AMAZING MONTH Yo My Readers and followers, I had so much great time and so much time sailing and it’s just been an amazing month. It was a quick thinking desicion to take part in the PWA Slalom event in Costa Brava, even though I had a bad event finish but I sailed good when the wind was strong and I really wish the wind could have kept to the 15 knots the whole event because the TR9xt 7.6 was working really good and fast on the Starboard ISonic 110. Tthe TR9 are working great only if I had a TR9 8.4 i could have done better. But last year I was on my 8.4 and the PWA were cancelling the heats but, so that’s why I didn’t register the 8.4 this year. But we’ll better be prepared as the PWA changes rules each time... blagh... part of racing.

As I arrived back home, KUMA from Kuma movie got back on Bonaire and we started filming everyday. Wind was crazy strong for weeks and June delivered great freestyle in the bay and also great wave sailing outside the reefs. Can’t ask for a better month. The most amazing, wonderful, emotional and fun moment I had this month was when a 9 year old boy from the island of Curacao came to Bonaire just to meet and windsurf with me. This boy is diagnosed with cancer and had his Arm removed :(, sadly at this young age something like this could happen. so I took him on my board and sailed for 5 minuuts, when he told me ‘I would like to windsurf myself’. Wauw! ‘Is he serious?’ is what i said to my self. So got him back to the beach, took a little beginner sail and show him how to windsurf, made my friend Bjorn Saragoza film it and take picture of this great moment. I got back home posted it online and in less then 8 hours the video reached more then 30.000 views. Check it yourself at http://on.fb.me/1bo5fAX As I am writting this post the video reached a peak of 61.000 views, thousand of likes and comments. As the cancer is pretty bad the insurance are no longer covering this little boy’s medical and treatment bills. As I got to know the details and news, I got on it and searched for help so that I can have a fund raising going on. Everything is up and running already and I will do the best I can to help and raise as much I can to get this little boy either to Holland or ST. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. My life is full of excitement and great moments and I’m just happy for whatever moments that come and to help wherever I can.

The new Loco Pro are amazing freestyle sails. I’ve been sailing a lot on the 4.4/4.8 and lately i sailed the 5.2 and they are really good. I haven’t got time to sail on the 5.6 yet as the wind was or is to strong. but I sailed in both flat water and wave conditions and they really do work. Now I am in Aruba for the 2013 Aruba Hi-winds. from the 2nd till 8th July. A report on this will follow soon. Best Taty Frans NB-9

WAKE IN INDIANA After pistol river, I made the long trek out east, to Indiana to see family. Indiana is where my parents are from, it’s where they learned to windsurf. I got to go up to the lake that they started on, lake Wawasea. I’m lucky I live on Maui! Unfortunately I didn’t get I sail, but I did learn to wake board and water ski. That was a blast! Lake sailing is so much different from Maui sailing, people’s small board are over 110 liters, there small sails are in the 6 meter range (unless there’s a big storm) and the fins are huge weed fins, not what I’m use to seeing. I’m confident that I could sail there on a 4.6 mutant and my 75 liter Quatro. The mutant is my favorite sail for all conditions, it has a great range and is extremely durable. I can’t wait to get back to Maui and sail in the warm ocean again! Casey Rehrer

NO JUNE SWOON AND SOON A NEW TUNE

Amazing how the year is already half gone and it feels like it just began. Here on Maui, since it’sw summer most of he time, I guess we don’t feel it moving along all that much. But this summer has been great so far. All winners at the PIstol River AWT Wave Tour stop, so many names to list. And great results in the Maui Race Series, with Micah, Phil, and many other winners just to make the point, MauiSails is still the one to beat on Maui. And Micah went to Spain and showed some good speed, finishing in the top five in a particularly difficult light wind event. We are so stoked to have his efforts and valued contribution to he development and testing here at home. I took a peek at Taty’s report before publishing, and the story about the the nine year old boy who lost his arm to cancer touched me big time. What really got me was the spirit of Taty in rising up to help this young fellow, to give of himself and go beyond for someone. Match that with Taty’s beaming smile and you have one of the brightest lights in the sport. There is no ambassador that is better. June saw Cornelia getting her Raptordeck covering finished on the main deck and rail caps forward. Due to Samantha’s unscheduled trip to Oahu (she’s much better now) and the recovery, we stayed around home, but managed to arrange the production of a special design for the top of the hatch cover box (the ‘turtle’). It is called the ancient secret flower of life, a symbol of sacred geometry that contains all the geometric shapes in its connected intersections. This design is found on the walls of pyramids and ancient structures all over the world and not coincidentally, we believe, ended up being within a few inches of the geometric center of the boat. Funny thing is that was our dog’s, (Rosie), favorite spot to lay, and the first day it was there she would only lay beside it, not on top. The material is the same EVA as the Raptor deck, and the design was cut in Thailand by my old friends, Annie and Tom Deng, former managers at WinLok Sailmakers while we were there with Gaastra. Now the rest of the cabin tops are screaming to get their Raptordeck covering as well, but that may have to wait while we get some sailing time on the main decks... just for fun. I’m looking forward to the 100th Edition of the Maui Monthly coming up in August. BY then we will have more good racing, some freestyle events, and the rest of the AWT Tour to talk about. And maybe some adventures on the world’s largest SUSB. Aloha Barry Spanier
