The Mayan had predicted the end of the world, specifically in the Caribbean Guadeloupe we had a swell of beautiful quality, ultra light wind perfect for my 5’7 and 5’3 ghost, Camille Juban with his Mutant was impressive by its risktaking and explosive aerials, we ride all day with other friends on this secret spot accessible only by a boat outside the reef which works very rare.

BACK ON THE WATER, AT LAST! After a long hiatus, I was finally going to windsurf in March! It was time to leave Hood River, work and other winter activities to come back to Maui for spring sailing! Unfortunately, March wasn’t everything that you usually expect when you plan windsurfing vacation in HI. And beside the 1st week early in the month of solid wind and waves, the rest of March was a mix of rainy or straight onshore days, kona wind, and very light days spent surfing. Coming here after nearly 4 months dreaming about windsurfing, I had all that amped up energy and tried chasing the wind around. I did score a few very light wind days where it was just barely enough to “shlog” out, catch a wave and make turns, and had an absolute blast! I love my 4.2 mutant for those conditions and I’m amazed how that sail works in nearly glassy conditions! It’s light, very maneuverable on the wave, and yet, enough to allow me to get out there in barely any wind! I’m hoping the trade winds return for April, now that extended my trip for an extra couple weeks! I’m excited to get on the 2014 gear and start shooting for the MauiSails catalogue! Aloha Ingrid Larouche

I SAY GOOD THINGS HAPPEN IN TIME The wind could have dropped a bit but never did it go so light that it was not sailable. This month the Loco 4.4 / 4.8 was pretty much used and at times of the week I was even powered up on both sizes. Freestyle sailing is just so enjoyable that you learn more and more about windsurfing so you can understand what you could make better or improve on the sails each year. With my time in Bonaire I spent time with my daughter, the most I can, but latetly is been really not that much. I am at the beach the whole time, practicing and coaching two Curacao racers with tuning their gear and making them sail better and more. Everything seems to be working smoothly with their four days training with Kiri and I. They have become faster and their first race in Curacao they were on the podium in 1st and 2nd place so that makes me feel great.:) I sailed on my TR-8 6.6 about five days for the whole day because of the Curacao boys, and still I truly love how these TR8s feels so fast and easy to use. Can’t wait to get on those TR-9. I have been pressuring Art for a new four batten Loco for two years and I finally got him fired to do it, so hopefully I will have a new Loco that could be magical in every possible way. Yes mid March is the time of the year when I head back to the island of Aloha, Maui for the Starboard photoshoot and as well to test the new freestyle Loco sail, :) thanks Art.

Maui always surprises with great conditions even though the forecast always looked bad this time, but we got perfect wind, and the right amount of sun during the the whole time we did the photoshoot. The new Loco are amazing light, nice colors, easy handling, super manueravble and makes you want to sail the whole day. AAaaandd.... I finally got my hands on the TR-9 6.3 and 7.0. I am pretty much speechless. I really don’t know what to say... they are incredible. Well writing this I am on the plane heading towards Dallas-Miami-CuracaoBonaire. The plane is shaking a lot so I will stop writing and get me ready in case something happens :) hahahaha. Catch you all later on the next one, Taty Frans NB-9 :)

IN MARCH I WAS STILL IN GUADELOUPE I had a trainning programe since one month and a half to be ready for maui and we hade great surfing and windsurfing conditions still. So I took adventage of it until the end and unfortunatly I hurt my shoulder in one of my last session the other day. But before this I had the time to make some nice lifestyle pictures with a friend photographer : Alain Rossiaud. We did a lot of photos for my new GuadeloupĂŠen sponsors Hyundai and it was really fun to do it. Bye that time I also finalise my sponsorship with the other french sponsors "orange" the phone company. So now that I have done what I wanted to do at home I can fly to Maui and try to recover at the best from my shoulder injury. See you next month in Maui for the photoshoot. Camille Juban

NOT MUCH WIND IN MARCH March is normally a very good and busy month at home getting all the new gear tuned up and getting dialed in for the upcoming racing season, but not this year. It had to be one of the longest stretches of no wind that I can remember in Maui let alone in March. I had a lot of friends that came to town to get out of the cold and get some good sailing in but they only managed to get out of the cold. I guess it was sort of good for me though as I was fighting some sort of cold and flu for most of the month anyway so didn’t miss out on much. I did get all of my new TR9’s though and got them all stickered up and looking good for this year. And even so there wasn’t much wind I still did manage a few good days on the water testing, they were short and hard to get but still better than most places this time of year. I also booked and bought my ticket for the first event of the season in Korea, leaving the end of April. Still lots of work to do and it will be here before I know it but I have all the pieces for the puzzle now, time to start fitting them in their place. Aloha Micah Buzianis

MARCH ON MAUI March and April are always pretty crowded and Ho’okpia sailing is always a little hectic during these months but the lack of wind has made it crazy. Everybody is chomping at the bit to get out there because it has been so long since we’ve had viable wind. Every pro windsurfer is on island ready to do photo shoots and testing their brand new gear. Despite the insane crowds, terrible wind and weird swell directions it had been a pretty fun month. I only got about 4 good days and the rest were spent surfing.

The few sessions I got were crazy though, mast high and barely moving on my 4.2 mutant. I cannot believe the strength that sail has and the beatings it can handle. I got absolutely demolished by a mast high set and my sail took the blunt of it as well as 3 more waves. I was expecting a broken mast or broken batons, but really all it did was give it a good wash, cleaned my window! It also went on the rocks and didn’t even get scratched! After that there wasn’t much wind but I had some epic days surfing some secret spots. April is looking to be a promising month, with wind and waves! Aloha, Casey Rehrer

SPRING AT THE MAUISAILS LOFT Spring at the MauiSails loft means that we are busy working through the 2014 wave and freestyle designs in preparation for our April photo shoot. Our daily testing has led to continued refinement of our progressive wave sail lines, both in shaping and construction. The Legend, Mutant and Ghost designs are being treated on a size by size basis, and tuned to ensure that there is a consistent feel and top performance throughout each range. Construction details and materials are being refined to give an overall weight reduction throughout all the wave ranges, while maintaining great durability. We have been working on our new 2014 “Loco Pro” 4-batten freestyle sail as well. Taty was here at the end of March to help test and provide feedback on the samples. So far the sails have been feeling super light and responsive with tons of “pop”. Taty is stoked and tells us that he can use a size smaller than his Bonaire mates. It is exciting to work our most progressive performance and fine tuned range of wave and freestyle sail designs to date. More details over the next months. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

THE MARCHING WINDS

We sure had some crazy weather during March. It seemed hat nothing was ordinary. But at least there was wind and even some waves for testing the new things we have executed in the wave and freestyle sails. The great thing is to see Art’s new designs coming out of the boxes made with the sample materials and looking good. Now they just have to get bashed and during March there is always plenty of photoshoot action with the people who will push the stuff, (often over the falls :), and make sure there is no weaknesses in the new lighter laminates we developed. We also get to have the Bonaire boyz cruising by and there is nothing quite like their infectious sense of fun. I love to hear what they have to say about their various sail’s sponsors and get the drift from their interchanges. Lots to learn about what is really necessary in a sail you want to do lots of really odd stuff with, popping and flying just the simple part. Cornelia’s main deck is now almost totally redone and covered with the Raptor Deck material. It’s been on the bow and stern now for a month and is still looking great, and the comfort level is amazing. Like a giant SUP. On Easter Sunday we managed to get out into a strong Northwest wind that allowed us to power reach across the channel, jibing again and again without losing much ground. She had a clean bottom and we had several long periods with GPS speeds over 8.5 knots. Sounds kind of funny in the context of windsurfing speed, but when you get 33,000 pounds moving that well you are solid truckin’. It was also occasion to have both our Moms out, mine is almost 98 and Sam’s is 92. They did really well and managed to keep smiling even though we were hard sailing the boat. My Mom, Cornelia, simply can’t get enough. I hope she makes it out for her 100th birthday! Aloha Barry Spanier

Micah Buzianis about 2013 TR-9 XT "I will race on the XT versions from 7.0 and up. Speed was better on the XT but the biggest difference I felt was that the XT was a lot softer and more forgiving. It would trim better in the chop absorbing the chop so you wouldn’t have to change your stance or trim and then in the puffs it would accelerate so much better because you could hold the sail down and just feel the leech twisting off excess power while accelerating rather than having to sheet out at all.".
